“Someone said don’t give
Toddy a bike, she only knows
how to run. It’s a bad idea to tell
me I can’t do something.”
A year later in 2009 she was
competing in the World Duathalon
Championships in Concord,
California. Then again the following
year in Edinburgh, Scotland,
and a further year in Gijon,
Spain, where she came fourth in
her age group.
Even now she cycles for
several hours a day on her
stationary bicycle: “To spite The
Fockers.”
But Miss Todd’s first passion
has always been running.
She used to go on a two-hour
run through the Port Hills every
morning before cycling to CBHS
via Governors Bay and the Sign
of the Kiwi. The running stopped,
not because of the cancer, but a
botched hip replacement which
she said was “harder to come to
terms with than The Fockers.”
“I’m a bit of a street fighter . . .
if I’m told I can’t do something,
I’ll do it . . . the cancer became
another challenge,” Miss Todd
said.
More than $50,000 was raised
for Miss Todd to be able to have
radiation treatment in Melbourne,
not funded through the
New Zealand health system.

Although when she first asked
to be referred to Melbourne’s

oncologist, who told her she
wouldn’t make it.
Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre,
she was told she “wasn’t sick
enough.”
But Miss Todd wrote a PhDlike
essay on all of the reasons she
was suitable for the treatment. A
month later she was having the
first round.
“I say to people it’s a bit like
earthquake repairs. You’ve got to
manage it yourself,” she said.
The treatment stunted The
Fockers’ growth, she said. The
tumours haven’t grown in more
than two years.
Although Miss Todd said she’s
fully aware they will “rear their
heads again.” When they do, she’s
going to have a massive party.
“Terminal cancer really
changes your attitude to life. The
little things bother you less.”
Until then she still has a few
things to tick off that bucket list
she was told to start: “I want to
still be alive to ride the Sumner
Rd again.”

Surf advocate
drops appeal
against port
THE SURFBREAK Protection
Society has withdrawn its
appeal against the Lyttelton Port
Company’s plan to extend the
harbour shipping channel.
LPC has been granted resource
consent to extend the existing
channel, but SPS appealed
the consent over concerns about
local surf breaks.
SPS spokesman Michael Gunson
said yesterday it had resolved
its concerns after LPC agreed to
additional protective measures.
These included the establishment
of a surfing liaison group,
regular surf reviews and a dedicated
web-based camera system
to monitor the Taylors Mistake
surf break. The monitoring will
be based on a system implemented
by the Port of Otago.
Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu,
Te Hapu o Ngati Wheke, Te
Runanga o Koukourarata and
Ngai Tahu Fisheries have also
lodged appeals against the
consent.
LPC chief executive Peter
Davie said the company “remains
focused” on working
with the groups to resolve the
issues.
