Marlon Williams
doesn’t forget about home
• By Julia Evans
MARLON Williams has opened
for Bruce Springsteen, won a
Silver Scroll, and played Later
. . . with Jools Holland.
And that is only the tip of the
iceberg when it comes to the
Lyttelton songwriter’s recent
achievements.
But in the midst of
international success, the
27-year-old hasn’t forgotten
where he calls home.
In the music video for
Williams’ latest single, What’s
Chasing You, eagle-eyed people
will spot the New Brighton Pier
featured in the background.
The video, released on Friday,
was shot on South Brighton
beach by Christchurch filmmaker
Martin Sagadin. It
features a swaggering Williams
who seemingly bullies other
beach-goers with dance moves.
Said Williams of his latest
song title: “It’s an earnest
question. It’s the only thing I’ve
ever really wanted to know of
another human being. Like all
good questions, it’s childishly
simple. We all want to live
inside the fears of the ones we
compare hands. I’m not
convinced truly understanding
another’s woes would really
bring anyone happiness, but I
am a nosey boy. What’s chasing
you?”
The single is the latest release
from the now Melbournebased
songwriter’s upcoming
sophmore album Make Way for
Love, which comes out February
16. The album was written in the
wake of Williams’ break-up with
another acclaimed Lyttelton
songwriting talent Aldous
Harding.
“Then I wrote about 15 songs
in a month,” he recalled.
Harding’s vocals feature
alongside Williams on the
record’s debut single Nobody
Gets What They Want Anymore.
the pair attempted to navigate
their separate demanding
careers until they couldn’t.
Williams spent three weeks
tucked away in the port town,
a few houses down from his
family home, with Lyttelton
producer Ben Edwards and
backing band The Yarra Benders
working on the record’s preproduction.
They then flew 12,000km to
record the album in the United
