Board opportunities for interns<br />

FOUR NORTH-WEST residents<br />

will work alongside the boards<br />

of established companies on<br />

internships.<br />

Hilary Walton of St Albans,<br />

Matt Russell of Papanui, Analisa<br />

Elstob of St Albans and Ben<br />

Hayward of Shirley are four of<br />

the 12 successful recipients of<br />

director internships throughout<br />

the city.<br />

Ms Walton will sit on the Regenerate<br />

board, Mt Russell will<br />

sit on the Development Christchurch<br />

board, Ms Elstob will sit on<br />

the Enable board and Mr Heyward<br />

will sit on the Christchurch<br />

City Holdings board.<br />

They will be provided mentoring<br />

and a study scholarship to do<br />

an institute of directors course<br />

during the term of the internship.<br />

The appointment is for a term<br />

of 18 months commencing mid-<br />

<strong>2016</strong>.<br />

Christchurch City Holdings<br />

director Bill Dwyer said there<br />

was an overwhelming response<br />

when seeking interns, but they<br />

had managed to select 12 from<br />

over 150 applicants.<br />

“The recipients are from a<br />

diverse range of ethnic backgrounds,<br />

professions and skill<br />

sets. Being an intern director is<br />

an opportunity for them to gain<br />

an insight into good governance<br />

Mr Dwyer said.<br />

CCHL-owned companies,<br />

together with some other associated<br />

entities with highly performing<br />

commercial boards who<br />

stepped up to be part of this.<br />

“I believe this scheme will offer<br />

worthwhile experience to those<br />

who have<br />

been<br />

selected<br />

and contribute<br />

to<br />

diversity<br />

around<br />

the board table,” Mr Dwyer said.<br />

Scholarship awarded<br />

Roddis was awarded a $6000<br />

Freemasons University<br />

Scholarships in Wellington on<br />

Wednesday.<br />

To qualify for the scholarship,<br />

applicants have to maintain top<br />

grades, completed or be<br />

completing a degree and be<br />

actively involved in their community.<br />

Ms Roddis completed a<br />

Bachelor of Arts last year from<br />

Canterbury University, with a<br />

double major in political science<br />

and Spanish.<br />

She is now gaining an honours<br />

degree in diplomacy and<br />

international relations, furthering<br />

her understanding in the<br />

fields of human rights and development.<br />

Between commencing those<br />

studies, she served in the Royal<br />

New Zealand Navy for four years<br />

as a navigation and warfare officer.<br />

The role entailed being delegated<br />

charge of the warship and<br />

its crew of up to 200 personnel.<br />

While she was on a one-year<br />

study exchange with the Royal<br />

Canadian Navy, the ship she<br />

served on was one of the first deployed<br />

to Haiti in January 2010.<br />

She participated in aid efforts<br />

and disaster relief, including<br />

clearing rubble and building<br />

orphanages.<br />

After leaving the military, she<br />

interned within a non-governmental<br />

organisation in eastern<br />

Europe.<br />

She spent months visiting and<br />

assisting orphanages, humantrafficking<br />

safe houses and slum<br />

outreach projects in Romania<br />

and Moldova.<br />

She was one of 26 scholarship<br />

recipients, with $184,000 handed<br />

out nationwide.<br />

Seven scholars received postgraduate<br />

scholarships of $10,000<br />

each, while 19 scholars received<br />

$6,000 each.<br />
