Canterbury will play host to the South Island’s best school girl rugby talent with teams from Otago, Southland, Tasman and Hanan Shield Districts looking to topple the defending champions. Burnside High School’s Latai Kaufusi and Freya Aldridge, Christchurch Girls’ High School’s Laura Thomas, Grace Brooker and Rosie Kelly and Rangi Ruru Girls’ School’s Isabella Carter have been selected in the Canterbury school girls’ A squad. Sammy Moore, Kezia Fowler- Blyth, Jaidyn Busch, Alice Dalzell, Molly Simpson, Zoe Levien, Naia Toaolani-Holden and Salome Naiku, of CGHS, Burnside’s Rosa Samuelu and Sarah Hanrahan, Papanui High School’s Brooke Mitchell Michaelee McDonald and Rangi Ruru’s Sarita De Gouw were all selected in the development squad. Canterbury will field two teams in the competition, with the South Island Junior and Teenage Rugby Board agreeing to a second “development” team from Canterbury. The Canterbury A team will be coached by Tevita Siulangapo and Katie Stanton, and coaches are yet to be appointed for the development team. Siulangapo said the inclusion of two local teams is great news for women’s rugby in the region. “A tournament like this allows players to develop their game under different coaches and against some really tough opposition,” he said. “More Canterbury school players will get that opportunity this year and hopefully that results in more of the girls choosing to carry on with the game after secondary school.” The tournament will be held from September 25 to 27. NOR’WEST NEWS Event manager Mark Sinclair said this year’s event would be “bigger and better” than last year’s inaugural one. “If they are just needing the last few things or they are wanting to plan their whole wedding, this show has everything under the one roof.” He said there was a wide range of exhibitors and stalls to look at to plan your special day. “There are so many specialists that are there under one roof so people can go at their own leisure and talk to them and plan their day. Then they can make appointments to go back at a later date and follow up.” • The With This Ring Bridal Show will be held at the Air Force Museum in Wigram, on August 28, from 9.30am- 4pm. Our businesses are behind the success of our region’s economic growth and I am always looking at ways to support them. Latest statistics confirm Canterbury’s small business economy has grown faster than anywhere in the country. It was great to bring the Minister to Northwood to speak to business people about what’s happening in our area. I enjoyed meeting Casebrook, Northwood and Belfast residents at my Keeping Connected Evening Meeting at Belfast Rugby Football Club. I was impressed by people taking time out at night to attend and the liveliness of the discussions. It’s about keeping connected through these night meetings, my caravan Funded by Parliamentary Service and authorised by Matt Doocey MP, 130A Percival St, Rangiora. clinics or just living and working in the electorate with my family. As Deputy Chair of the Social Services Select Committee and having a background in mental health, it was important to me to bring the Social Services Select Committee to Canterbury to hear from service providers about their response to communities’ psycho-social recovery needs in post-earthquake Canterbury. I worked to ensure there was crossparty representation for the visit in recognition of Parliament’s continued support of our recovery. Speaking at the Belfast-Kaiapoi Rotary Club last week, I was impressed by the community spirit that was very much in evidence. I look forward to working with the Belfast-Kaiapoi club in any way I can. As always, I’m here to help.
