Cycle lane marked
• By Andrew King
A STRETCH of road in
Harewood that was causing
confusion has finally been
marked correctly by the city
council.
Where Gardiners Rd changes
from 50km/h to 80km/h a small
footpath was built to the left
of the traffic islands, however,
it was not clear what it was installed
for.
Some cyclists used the path to
avoid vehicles coming close to
them, while others just continued
on the road.
Now, it has been labelled as
a cycleway with marking to
indicate that, after the Shirley-
Papanui Community Board
requested the confusion be
cleared up.
Board deputy chairman
Aaron Keown questioned
why it took a request from
the community board for it to
happen.
“It is obvious that cyclists
should move to the left instead
of competing with trucks and
other vehicles on the road in
the narrow bit between the two
islands,” he said.
A city council spokeswoman
said it was not “designed as a
it if they felt more safe to do so.
“The markings were installed
at the request of the Shirley-
she said.
RESIDENTS FIGHTING to stop
the expansion of an Edgeware
petrol station will have to wait
until September for a decision.
A group of residents banded
together to challenge the expansion
of the Edgeware Rd BP, and
made their case at a city council
hearing on July 29 before commissioner
David Mountfort
BP has bought two sections
next to the service station on
the corner of Edgeware Rd and
Cranford St, and plans to build a
bigger forecourt and shop there.
But residents say it will dominate
their neighbourhood, and
destroy the character of the area.
such as delivery times and
landscaping of the site.
