‘Explosion of colour’ rewards gardeners<br />

Fire rages, homes at risk<br />

THE LOVELOCKS have done<br />

it again.<br />

Northwood residents Brian<br />

and Janet Lovelock came away<br />

with the premier gold at this<br />

season’s spring gardening awards<br />

from the Canterbury Horticultural<br />

Society.<br />

The couple also added two<br />

gold awards from the Christchurch<br />

Beautifying Association’s<br />

spring garden awards to their<br />

collection in the open and secret<br />

garden categories.<br />

“We’re pretty proud, we’ve<br />

always been big gardeners,” Mrs<br />

Lovelock said, they spend almost<br />

every day outdoors.<br />

She said the trophies will be<br />

put in a display case at their<br />

house until they have to be<br />

returned for the next round of<br />

summer judging.<br />

Which she said the pair are<br />

already working towards.<br />

“Some of my seedlings are already<br />

coming up. It never stops,”<br />

Mrs Lovelock said.<br />

Although the Lovelocks spend<br />

every day in the garden together,<br />

they wouldn’t often be caught<br />

sitting out there having a cup of<br />

tea.<br />

“If we sit out there, we always<br />

spot something that could be<br />

better or needs to be fixed and<br />

keep working,” she said.<br />

But Mrs Lovelock said there<br />

is nothing more rewarding than<br />

their garden.<br />

“You get the tiniest handful of<br />

seed and watch it turn into an<br />

explosion of colour in the garden<br />

displays,” she said.<br />

The Lovelock’s spring award<br />

winning garden included tulips,<br />

polyanthas and shrubs like rhododendrons<br />

and azaleas.<br />

But come November they’ll<br />

be pulling out the annuals and<br />

planting their summer garden.<br />
