‘Explosion of colour’ rewards gardeners
Fire rages, homes at risk
• By Julia Evans
THE LOVELOCKS have done
it again.
Northwood residents Brian
and Janet Lovelock came away
with the premier gold at this
season’s spring gardening awards
from the Canterbury Horticultural
Society.
The couple also added two
gold awards from the Christchurch
Beautifying Association’s
spring garden awards to their
collection in the open and secret
garden categories.
“We’re pretty proud, we’ve
always been big gardeners,” Mrs
Lovelock said, they spend almost
every day outdoors.
She said the trophies will be
put in a display case at their
house until they have to be
returned for the next round of
summer judging.
Which she said the pair are
already working towards.
“Some of my seedlings are already
coming up. It never stops,”
Mrs Lovelock said.
Although the Lovelocks spend
every day in the garden together,
they wouldn’t often be caught
sitting out there having a cup of
tea.
“If we sit out there, we always
spot something that could be
better or needs to be fixed and
keep working,” she said.
But Mrs Lovelock said there
is nothing more rewarding than
their garden.
“You get the tiniest handful of
seed and watch it turn into an
explosion of colour in the garden
displays,” she said.
The Lovelock’s spring award
winning garden included tulips,
polyanthas and shrubs like rhododendrons
and azaleas.
But come November they’ll
be pulling out the annuals and
planting their summer garden.
