Boost for golf club
• Fraser Walker-Pearce
RAWHITI GOLF Club has
continued its amazing recovery
from almost being shut down by
the city council, by now being
invited to host an international
tournament.
The club received an email
recently proposing it be a host
course for the Christchurch
Casino Golden Oldies Sports
Celebration 2018, to be held in
the city.
Rawhiti Golf Club president
Mene Mene said the invitation
was a credit to the whole club.
“It’s quite exciting for the
club, things are looking up for
the east. After all the things
that we went through to save
the course, it’s now coming into
fruition. I’m just so proud of the
club, it is leading by example,”
he said.
Only a few years ago, the club
was on the brink of being shut
down by the city council, after
posting a loss of nearly $200,000
in 2014.
But, thanks to smart financing
by the club, it was given a 25-
year lease by the city council to
continue operating.
Christchurch manager for the
event, Mike Godinet said
a “blanket letter” was sent to
BIG CHANCE: Rawhiti Golf Club president Mene Mene
received an invitation for the club to be a host course for an
international tournament in 2018.
all golf courses in the city, but
they would only select the best
four.
“We have not made any decisions
yet as to who will host,
we’re speaking to them all.
Maybe half a dozen clubs have
returned the letter registering
their interest, for the tournament
in April 2018,” he said.
Mr Mene said the tournament
looks like it will be a big positive
for the club, if it is selected.
“It’s being held in Christchurch,
and I’ve heard there’s
about 500 golfers coming to the
city for (the tournament),” he
said.
Mr Godinet said the event
would draw thousands of visitors.
“We’re looking at a minimum
of 400 golfers, and probably
12,000 people coming to watch,”
he said.
Other courses in the east that
have been approached by Golden
Oldies, are Avondale, Waitikiri,
Christchurch, Waimairi Beach,
and Bottle Lake.
LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON?: Father and son pair Oliver and
Grant Stewart got involved with the recent Be Bald or Be
Bold event. More than $10,000 was raised at the recent
hair-raising event at The Palms Shopping Centre. The money
raised will go towards funding University of Otago research
into the genetics behind cancer. A group of mothers set up
Research, Education and Awareness of Child Cancer and
Hematology, or REACH, after their own children were diagnosed
with cancer. The purpose of REACH is to raise funds
for more research that will improve treatments and increase
survival rates. REACH is calling for more research into targeted
treatments, and is currently working with Professor
Parry Guilford of Otago University.
