TWO COASTAL Spirit players are
looking to book their spot in the
New Zealand under-20 women’s
football squad for this year’s World
Cup in Papua New Guinea.
Central defender Rebecca Lake
was recently named in the New
Zealand under-17 team which will
head to China in July, before their
upcoming World Cup in Jordan,
beginning this September.
After being named in the New
Zealand under-20 training squad,
Lake now has the rare opportunity
of potentially representing her
country in two different age group
world cups in the same year.
Goalkeeper Una Foyle joins her
Coastal Spirit teammate in the
training squad and is no stranger to
the under-20 set up, having already
represented the team over the past
12 months.
At 17, both girls can also look
ahead to the prospect of two potential
under-20 tournament as they
will still be eligible for the 2018
World Cup in France.
“After this campaign, I’ll be
training hard for selection for the
next under-20 World Cup in 2018
as I will still be eligible,” says Foyle.
The two girls are currently in
Auckland with the team which has
two friendly matches against the
United States under-19 side touring
New Zealand.

WAIMAIRI Surf Lifesaving
Club had a strong showing
at the regional surf
lifesaving awards, winning
five categories.
The club claimed sports
team of the year. Its women’s
canoe crew also won under-14
athlete of the year,
with Taylor Chamberlain
and Maddie Dawe taking
out the Canterbury Open
Women Tube Rescue Trophy.
The Surf Lifesaving
Canterbury Awards of
Excellence award ceremony
was held on Saturday at the
Mashina Lounge.
Coach Janice Murdoch
shared coach of the year
with Sumner’s Mark Robberds,
while the club won
the innovation award for
their ATV schedule.
Meanwhile, South Brighton
Surf Lifesaving Club
member Elsa Hegarty won
top athlete at the ceremony.
Sportsperson of the year
went to Morgan Foster from
South Brighton.
Official of the year went
to North Beach’s Graeme
Trevor.
