Grafitti rates rocket

COMPLAINTS OF graffiti and
tagging from eastern suburbs
residents have almost doubled
in the past three months.
A report requested by the
Burwood-Pegasus Community
Board showed that there were
77 customer service requests to
the city council regarding graffiti
in March.
Last week, however, a more
up-to-date report showed the
number had risen to 127 for the
month of April.
The Pegasus Post has received
new information that in May,
the number had risen again to
147 – almost double the number
of requests made in March.
City councillor Glenn Livingstone
said the data may not
yet be reliable enough to make
judgement on.
“At the board meeting, we
talked about the CSRs (customer
service requests). With stats
like this you have to be careful
in making judgement calls, because
this is only a small group.
“We have asked for more
specific data . . . across the city
the incidents in our ward are
lower than some other wards,”
he said.
Community board member
Linda Stewart said rising graffiti
complaints in the eastern
suburbs was concerning.
“All we can do at this stage is
ask for more information, and
ask staff to investigate options
that we can take,” she said.
More than 90 reports to the
city council were of general
graffiti, with the rest being
made up of mainly public
tagging and building-related
vandalism.
The report shown to the
Pegasus Post states that the
most targeted areas for graffiti
in May were city council parks
and waterways, and community
buildings such as schools.

Garden targeted
for destruction

AN EASTERN suburbs resident’s
hard work was ruined overnight
after vandals destroyed a public
flower garden.
South New Brighton resident
Julie Huddy has slowly turned
the Bridge St roundabout into
a public garden space, but was
angry to find that her hard work
had been undone by vandals.
The roundabout, which was
decorated with colourful flowers,
was vandalised overnight last
week, with plants and flowers
up-rooted and thrown or kicked
around.
Mrs Huddy took to the People’s
Independent Republic of New
Brighton Facebook page to vent
her frustration.
“Do you realise this work has
not been done by the council?
These plants are bought out of
our own pockets,” she said.
She would replace the plants
that had been “ripped out and
(thrown) around”.
But, only hours after the garden
was decimated, Mrs Huddy
made a trip to the local Bunnings
Warehouse, and returned to
re-plant all of the uprooted flowers.
