Retiring cop gets bravery
medal for rescue mission
SENIOR CONSTABLE Tony
Maw did not receive a standard
retirement gift at his farewell
from the police force.
His act of bravery to rescue a
woman from a floating vehicle
was recognised by the Royal
Humane Society of New Zealand.
Maw was presented with a
bronze medal for his selfless
response when realising a car
had ended up in French Bay,
Akaroa, shortly after the offduty
officer from Rangiora had
completed the Little River Rail
Trail bicycle route.
He was with friends driving
into the tourist town on
October 18, 2021, 28 years to
the day he graduated from the
Trentham Police College, when
one of the group spotted a car
in the water.
It had rolled down the boat
ramp and was drifting with the
tide away from shore.
“I could see a woman in the
driver’s seat, but she wasn’t responding
to anyone on shore,”
Maw said.
“The car was filling with water.
I didn’t stop to think. I just
got my gear off, chucked my
bike shorts on and jumped in.
“You hear people say they
didn’t really think about it, they
RESCUE: Maw propels a woman to shore in Akaroa after rescuing her from a car.
just acted – that’s a real thing,
it’s exactly what happened,” he
said.
Maw swam about 20 metres
to the car and discovered the
doors were locked.
However, the passenger
window was down, so he clambered
over the bonnet as the car
was inundated.
“By the time I got to the
passenger side, the woman had
made her way there too and she
kind of fell into my arms.
“I flipped her over and paddled
her back.
“To be honest, I was a bit
out of practice. The last time I
performed a water rescue was
28 years ago in a pool at Police
College – there was a moment
I wondered if I was doing it
right,” he said.
Maw’s medal was accompanied
by a citation which
backgrounded his life-saving
exploits.
“It was later established
the incident was a mental
health crisis for the woman,
and Senior Constable Maw’s
actions saved this woman’s
life and allowed for ongoing
mental health assistance to be
provided.”
Although there was a successful
outcome, Maw was
disturbed by the ordeal.
“I had trouble sleeping afterwards,
thinking about what
would have happened if I didn’t
get her out.
RECOGNITION: Senior
Constable Tony Maw
received his Royal Humane
Society of New Zealand
bronze medal from
Canterbury Rural Area
Commander Inspector
Peter Cooper.
“It was great to go back to
work. I had a good chat to
a mate who could talk from
experience and he helped a lot,”
he said.
“I know all my workmates
would have done the same
thing, we just play what’s in
front of us.”
Maw’s retirement function
was held at the Rangiora
branch of the Royal New
Zealand Returned and Services
Association earlier this month.
In Brief
Rainbow crossing
decision celebrated
The city council’s decision to
investigate the installation of a
rainbow pedestrian crossing has
been welcomed by Christchurch’s
LGBTQIA+ community after
they launched a petition calling
for the visible sign of inclusion.
Community members were
surprised by councillors agreeing
last week to ask staff about the
likely cost of a crossing and
possible locations. “It sends such
a clear message to the queer
community in Christchurch.
It shows they’re out there, they
care, and want to do something
in response to all this hate,” said
Claude Tellick, who opened
the petition on March 28. It
had collected 1640 signatures
yesterday.
Towels likely to blame
for eatery blaze
A pile of freshly-laundered and
hot tea towels combusting is
believed to be the cause of a fire
which extensively damaged the
kitchen area of The Bridge bar
and eatery in Prebbleton early
yesterday. “At this stage we’re
looking at it being spontaneous
combustion,” said Fire and
Emergency New Zealand
investigator Mitchell Jeffery.
FENZ crews from Lincoln and
Wigram arrived at the Springs
Rd premises about 5am and took
about 40 minutes to bring the
blaze under control. The Bridge
co-owner Melissa Smith said the
business would reopen soon.
Historic drawings to
feature in exhibition
Architectural drawings of the
former State Insurance building
on Worcester St, one of the city’s
iconic landmarks, feature in an
exhibition at Tūranga showcasing
Cecil Wood’s talents. “We have a
variety of original drawings in the
exhibition, with the oldest from
1919 and others from the 1930s.
The plans are often proposals,
so some of the drawings aren’t
actually how the buildings ended
up,’’ said exhibition curator and
Canterbury University library
archivist Erin Kimber. Drawing
Plea for greater understanding
• By Chris Barclay
AS PAUL BARTON’S wife
succumbs to Motor Neurone
Disease, he is pleading for the
Ministry of Health to increase its
efforts to study potential causes
of the incurable illness.
Barton has launched a petition
seeking MND to be classified as
a notifiable disease so the ministry
can collect more data on a
sickness which claims about 120
Kiwi lives a year.
If the Englishman’s initiative
is successful, a more comprehensive
approach to MND will be a
foundation of Ally’s legacy.
She was diagnosed with MND
in 2021, two years after symptoms
developed as she worked as
an intensive care unit nurse in
Sydney.
“Now she’s trained me to nurse
her,” said Barton, her full-time
carer.
He wants MND notifiable so
each case must be reported to
the ministry, a stipulation which
ideally makes it possible to detect
factors common across multiple
diagnoses.
“MND affects everyone in different
ways. That’s the frustrating
part because they (doctors)
say: ‘We don’t know why’. They
should be investigating links,”
he said.
When a New Zealander is
diagnosed with MND there is
an optional registry, but Barton
believes recording details would
be a low priority for a new
sufferer.
“If you’ve just been told you’ve
got 2-5 years to live, you’re so
overwhelmed you’re not going
to give a s**t about a register,” he
said.
Barton suspected MND was
not already notifiable because
it is not infectious or a risk to
public health, a view vindicated
by Ministry of Health – Manatū
Hauora deputy director of public
UK HOLIDAY: Paul and Ally Barton visited Roche Abbey in his native Yorkshire in England
last Christmas. The couple were married in Sydney during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020
and then returned to New Zealand as Ally’s MND symptoms worsened.
health, Richard Jaine.
“Making a disease notifiable
is aimed at assisting the surveillance,
monitoring and response
to a disease that presents a risk
to public health. Mostly this
includes infectious diseases,” he
said.
“As such, there are no plans to
make Motor Neurone Disease a
notifiable disease.”
However, the ministry’s
current list of notifiable diseases
includes lead absorption
(poisoning) and decompression
sickness, which covers injuries
caused by a rapid decrease in air
or water pressure.
of debilitating terminal disease
The petition has drawn 1187
signatures since it was launched
in November; Barton hopes for a
greater response before it is lodged
with Parliament.
Barton’s campaign has been
backed by Motor Neurone New
Zealand Charitable Trust.
“We very much support him
and agree the MND Registry
would be better utilised if it
included all possible information
from 100 per cent of those who
suffer MND in New Zealand,”
said interim chief executive Mark
Leggett.
Filipino-born Ally was 34 when
she was diagnosed, so she is one of
the youngest MND cases in New
Zealand.
Her symptoms started with a
twitch in her right hand about
six months after their apartment
was fumigated three times in six
weeks, leading Barton to believe
chemicals were responsible.
The couple visited San Francisco
last August, where changes were
noticeable at either end of the trip.
“When we left she could squeeze
the brakes on her walker. She
couldn’t by the time we came
back,” Barton said.
Eating has also become an issue.
“She was able to eat and feed
herself, now she’s using a robot.
It’s got buttons so it scoops up the
Barton appreciated the support
the couple, who have no family
members in New Zealand, have
received since they settled in
Woolston in October 2021.
The couple left Australia because
Ally was not eligible for support.
They have been able to modify
their house to make it more
accessible, while Ally has access
to a wheelchair ($25,000), a grid
pad ($16,000) to communicate
with her eyes and a van to make
transportation easier.
Last month a $10,000 PEG
(Percutaneous Endoscopic
Gastrostomy) feeding tube was
inserted in her stomach.
Yet, Barton still yearns for the
ministry to put more resources
into studying the causes of MND.
“How it feels from our
perspective is: ‘Here’s some
equipment, go away and die’,” he
said.
“Their mentality is we’ll get it
back in two years anyway.
“That’s what it feels like. I’m sick
of being told ‘We don’t know why’
you get MND.”
muscle movement progressively deteriorate and die.
• There is currently no effective treatment and no known
• The causes are unknown. Worldwide research includes
studies on exposure to viruses, certain toxins/chemicals
Fijian national set for deportation after
• By Emily Moorhouse
A SERIAL scammer hacked a
student’s social media account,
stole intimate photos and videos
and then posted them to the
student’s Instagram account
and sent them to his family and
friends.
This came after Krishneel Nath
Maharaj blackmailed the victim
to pay him $2500 but never received
the money. He didn’t stop
there, the Christchurch 33-yearold
went on to torment the
student in other ways, causing
him huge distress for a prolonged
period.
The student wasn’t Maharaj’s
only victim, though. He also
threatened to leak another woman’s
nude photos if she did not
provide him with sexual favours,
and created fake Fijian passports
in other people’s names and stole
from them.
The Fijian national was jailed
for one year and 10 months when
he appeared in the district court
for sentencing. Judge Jane Farish
said he would likely be deported
once he had served one-third of
his sentence.
He had been charged with
blackmail, theft, obtaining by
deception, altering a document
with intent to defraud, using a
document for pecuniary advantage,
unlawfully taking a motor
SCAMMER: Krishneel Nath Maharaj hacked a university student’s email account and used
it to access his social media, finding intimate photos of the victim which he then used to
blackmail him.
vehicle, causing loss by deception
and possession of a meth pipe.
He was also convicted of forgery
and using forged documents
after he created fake passports of
people known to him from the
Fijian community, including a
family member whom he stole
from.
Maharaj’s trail of deceit began
in May 2019 when he contacted
a person on Trade Me who was
selling their vehicle, expressing
his interest in purchasing it.
He went to the man’s house
This report was produced by
Open Justice – Te Pātītī, an
NZME initiative funded by
NZ on Air
and showed him a screenshot of
a fake bank transfer, indicating
the money had been paid for the
vehicle.
Believing the transaction was
complete, the man gave Maharaj
the car and he drove it to Auckland
where he handed it over to
an associate.
Maharaj repeated the act with
a different victim, who was selling
a $1600 television because
their family was going through
financial hardship.
Later, Maharaj was at Auckland’s
SkyCity on August 27,
2022, when he stole a cellphone
he found sitting next to a gaming
machine.
When the partner of the man
who owned the $1200 phone
called it, Maharaj answered and
agreed to give it back.
But the following day Maharaj
phoned the woman through the
Messenger app installed on her
partner’s phone and threatened
her.
He said: “You can’t find me, but
I can find you” and that he would
only give the phone back if she
provided sexual favours to him.
passport fraud and blackmail scheme
Maharaj then threatened to
distribute the intimate photos
and videos of her and her partner
he had found on the phone,
and, confirming he knew her
address, that he would go to her
house and force her into sexual
acts.
The next day, Maharaj sent a
message to the woman saying
she looked “hot” in the photos
and that he would back up
everything from the phone to his
device and then give it back – but
first, he wanted to see her “in
person the same way as in the
pics”.
He described himself as a
“hacker” and said he would post
the woman’s photos and make
her famous.
The couple went to the police
and when later spoken to by
officers, Maharaj claimed he was
“doing a good thing” by keeping
the phone safe and trying to
return it.
About three months later,
Maharaj hacked a student’s email
account and used it to access his
personal and business Instagram
accounts.
That led to him discovering
intimate photos and videos of
the student and his girlfriend,
who were not known to him, that
had been saved in their messages
to one another.
Maharaj threatened to post
GUILTY PLEAS: Krishneel Nath Maharaj was sentenced to one year and 10 months jail
when he appeared in the district court.
the visuals to the student’s Instagram
accounts if he didn’t pay
him $2500.
When the money wasn’t paid,
Maharaj went through with
his threat and not only posted
them to the victim’s Instagram
accounts but also sent them to
his contacts.
Maharaj continued to torment
the student by enacting a plan to
have his father’s car towed and
scrapped for parts.
While the father was able to
recover his car before it was
scrapped, he had to spend more
than $3000 to have it repaired
and released to him.
Between November 2022 and
January 2023, while accessing
the student’s email account and
personal details, Maharaj obtained
an ANZ bank card in his
name and stole $1041 from him.
He also accessed the student’s
university login and requested
a new identification card, altering
the details online to display
Maharaj’s picture. However, the
card was delivered to the student’s
home address rather than
Maharaj’s.
Finally, in May 2023, Maharaj
and an associate produced fake
Fijian passports, typically with
their photos and the details of
people known to them. Other
passports were created using
made-up identities.
They then used the passports
to gain or attempt to gain
property or services such as
phones and a tenancy lease.
Maharaj used a family member’s
details to steal $2000 from
them and acquired a phone and
two sim cards, valued at $2198,
using the name of someone else
known to him. He also withdrew
$1500 from that person’s bank
account.
When police searched Maharaj’s
house, they found methamphetamine
pipes and a laptop
containing partially completed
fake passports.
At sentencing, his victims
sought reparation for the financial
costs they incurred, but
Maharaj was unable to pay them.
His lawyer Matt Smit acknowledged
his client’s offending was
prolonged but told the judge it
was “out of character” as Maharaj
had struggled with the loss of his
stepfather and turned to meth.
Judge Farish said blackmail
was one of the most “insidious
of our crimes”, acknowledging
the significant distress Maharaj’s
offending caused his victims.
“You nearly destroyed their
lives. These were people who had
done you no harm.”
She refused to give Maharaj
full credit for his guilty pleas,
stating it would be “just wrong”
as he initially denied the
offending and was on the run
for some time before police
caught him.
Orana Park pleads
for more funding
NEW ZEALAND’S only open
range zoo, Orana Park, could
risk closure unless the city
council provides significant
ongoing funding.
In a last-ditch bid to secure a
greater commitment to financial
support, Orana Park management
are appealing to Cantabrians
to make a submission to the
city council’s Long Term Plan
before public feedback closes on
Sunday.
Orana Park’s submission to
the LTP details a staged approach
to keep the attraction
operational: $500,000 in the first
year, $1 million in the second
year, and $1.5m in the third year
and beyond.
It currently receives $250,000
annually.
“Essentially we need $1.5m
per annum in secure ongoing
funding support to ensure our
financial future and halt our
inevitable demise,” Orana Wildlife
Park chief executive Lynn
Anderson told Stuff.
“What we’re asking for is
$8.11 per year per rate payer or
monthly, 68c.”
Until 2018 visitor income at
Orana Park covered 90 per cent
of annual operating costs; now
it has dropped to 65 per cent.
Orana Park did receive a
government supplement during
the Covid-19 pandemic and a
one-off $400,000 from a Better
Off fund – the now-abandoned
Three Waters reform support
package.
While those cash injections
were welcome, the McLeans
Island Rd, Harewood, wildlife
refuge needed $5.1m to run per
year.
“Caring for 1000 wonderful
animals, ensuring their
best practice welfare, and our
significant commitment to conservation
costs a lot of money,”
Anderson said.
She said it was not feasible
to increase admission prices,
which are currently $39.50 for
an adult and $12.50 for a child.
About 200,000 people visit
Orana Park, which was opened
in 1976, each year.
Call for show’s lifestock
judging to be public
• By Dylan Smits
WITH THE New Zealand
Agricultural Show postponed,
North Canterbury Federated
Farmers hopes the public will
have access to the remaining
livestock competitions.
President Karl
Dean said it
would not “make
any sense” if the
competitions
were closed to
the public.
The agricultural
show board
announced
Karl Dean
yesterday it would be postponing
this year’s show. The livestock
judging and competitions would
still go ahead, but in a format
similar to the Covid-19 ‘no
shows’ in 2020 and 2021, which
were closed to the public.
“I think they might actually get
a bit of a surprise if they go back
to their roots, let the public in
just for the livestock and then see
how high attendance is,” Dean
said.
He believes the competition
loses its prestige if the public is
not allowed to watch.
The Canterbury Agricultural
and Pastoral Association said the
POPULAR: About 100,000 people usually attend the A&P
Show, which has been running since 1863.
show’s postponement was a disappointing
but necessary decision,
due to limited reserves after
“challenging” Covid-19 years and
a financial loss in 2023.
It determined the show was
unable to risk another loss year
in 2024, citing rising costs as a
factor in the decision.
“Twelve months of costs and
three days of revenue is not a
great business model by anyone’s
analysis,” said board chair Stewart
Mitchell.
Mitchell said the board and
committee would work on consolidating
revenue and reserves
and was planning for the show to
return in 2025.
Show vendors The Star spoke
to were saddened by the postponement,
but understanding of
the economic factors behind it.
Dannevirke-based Ruahine
Ports general manager Mel Rees
was pleased vendors were
informed of the decision early,
allowing time to adjust and potentially
sell at different shows.
“It’s a shame it’s not going
ahead, but you do understand it
from a business perspective,” she
said.
The Paeony Patch owner Sara
Archdale was saddened to hear
the show was postponed.
“Not even just as a vendor, but
as a resident of the community,
I’ll say it’s a wonderful event and
a lovely opportunity for the rural
community to come together. It’s
really sad to hear.”
THE TE PAE Convention
Centre was the place to be over
the weekend, as thousands of
superheroes and villains rolled
into town.
The annual Armageddon expo
attracted an estimated 15,000
people, celebrating all things geek.
The event was first held in 1995,
and has quickly grown to become
one of New Zealand’s largest public
conventions.
Self-confessed geek, Armageddon
founder William Geradts said
like-minded people brought a real
vibrant energy to the event.
“I’m full-on geekdom. Even if
you just like to stick your foot in
the pool a little bit, go to a Marvel
movie. If you just want to enjoy a
day, this is a fun show.”
Stalls selling pop culture merchandise
proved popular with
visitors, along with gaming, and a
lineup of international guest stars.
“I love being able to do these
shows where people who are into
anime and cosplay and gaming
and all kinds of shows can come
and meet the actors and have a
good time,” Geradts said.
The two-day celebration of science
fiction and pop culture saw
cosplay characters from comic
books, video games, film and TV
come to life.
Canterbury University student
Ashton Avéres made her cosplay
Jester Lavorre costume herself,
and enjoyed being able to show it
off to her friends.
“I got my flatmates into cosplay
as well, and now they’re all into it.”
Sarah Lamont came as cosplay
character ‘Sailor Moon Eternal’.
She said it had been on her bucket
list for years.
“I’m a 90s kid, I grew up with
Sailor Moon and this was one ultimate
cosplay I’ve always wanted
to do.”
Unveiling The Crucible: A Timeless Tale
of Truth, Power, and Consequence!
Step into the fiery world of Arthur Miller’s
masterful modern classic as Riccarton Players
Inc proudly presents “The Crucible,” directed by
Alistair Bean.
In this electrifying production, witness the
gripping narrative that transcends time, delving
deep into the heart of human nature and society’s
darkest corners. Set in the heart of Salem,
Massachusetts, amidst the infamous witch trials
of the 17th century, “The Crucible” ignites
conversations on themes that resonate more than
ever in today’s tumultuous world.
As the echoes of hysteria and manipulation
reverberate through the ages, Miller’s timeless
exploration of truth, morality, and the abuse of
power remains startlingly relevant. In a society
teetering on the edge of chaos, where truth is often
obscured by fear and deception, “The Crucible”
serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of mob
mentality and the consequences of unchecked
authority.
Under Alistair Bean’s visionary direction, with
all cast and crew eagerly rising to the challenge,
experience the raw intensity of Miller’s characters
as they grapple with their own convictions and
confront the relentless forces of oppression and
prejudice. Through compelling performances and
dynamic staging, Riccarton Players Inc brings to
life a tale that continues to challenge and provoke
audiences worldwide.
Join us for an unforgettable theatrical experience
that sparks discussion, ignites passion, and
illuminates the timeless truths at the heart of “The
Crucible”, and embark on a journey through the
integrity.
A raft of testing was done, including
blood and urine testing, radiography,
ultrasound and MRI ( which gave us our
diagnosis of severe pachymeningitis
and evidence of encephalitis). Yogi was
an intensive hospital patient requiring
constant observation, recording of vitals
including blood pressure, intravenous
fluids, medications, regular glucose
readings to keep his diabetes in check and
assisted feeding to keep up his strength.
He spent his days with us and his nights
YOGI
Yogi, an elderly, blind 11 year old
Sydney Silkie, was recently diagnosed
with a rare neurological disease, GME (
Granulomeningeal encephalopathy). I
may only diagnose GME
every couple of years
and diagnosis requires
an MRI and often spinal
fluid analysis, so not an
easy disease to work up.
Yogi presented for
sudden onset focal
seizures, head twitching,
unable to walk, circling
and severe depression (
he just wanted to head
press as though he had
an extreme migraine.)
He was mainly affected
down his left side, with
a head tilt and facial Yogi and his mum.
paralysis to the left. He
could often become
floppy, collapsed but
then would stand up. His appetite had
decreased and being a Type 1 Diabetic
made this case complicated. He waxed
and waned with fevers and appetite. He
would crash and then improve.
Yogi the patient
at MMH vets
Yogi undergoing MRI
at the Afterhours Clinic. It was a lot for
Yogi but he never complained, allowed
us to do what we needed to do as he was
determined to get better. Our nurses
loved caring for him as
an inpatient.
Miraculously this wee
dog responded to the
heavy medications
required to treat this
disease, as well as
dealing with the hurdles
of being a diabetic. His
South African owners
would do absolutely
anything for “ Joggie”
( original name is
Joachim, meaning
established by God). Hes
taking prednisone and
cyclosporine to treat the
GME and handling these
drugs well. Hes also
on twice daily glargine
insulin, eye medications for dry eye,
seizure medication and Panadol. Hes such
a trouper taking all these and every week I
can see improvement. Luckily he loves his
tucker and adores his mum and dad, who
he has completely wrapped around his
wee paw.
This case highlights the fact that every
patient ( owner willing of course) deserves
a chance of
surviving, even
if the odds
are stacked
against them
being elderly
and having a
severe brain
inflammatory
disease - not
an every day
disease at all.
Yogi may have
only weighed
4kg but he has fought to get
better every step of the way. Your vet is so
proud of you Yogi and I can’t wait to see
more improvement when im back from
holiday.
Flying into an electric future
A Cass Bay resident
is leading the charge
helping electric planes
take off in New Zealand.
Reporter Dylan Smits
spoke with Gary
Freedman about his
career promoting green
technology
GARY FREEDMAN’S long time
love of hang gliding transitioned
into flying small aircraft as a
hobby in 2012.
“One day I was driving my
electric car to the airfield to fly a
petrol plane and I just knew that
wasn’t quite right. To do all this
work in renewables, I was driving
an electric car, but my hobby was
burning petrol.”
The thought set him off on a
search for innovative companies
investing in electric aviation
technology.
In 2016, before his move to Cass
Bay from the United Kingdom,
Freedman visited the Pipistrel
aircraft manufacturer in Slovenia
and took a test flight in the fullyelectric
Alpha Electro.
“I just thought it was fantastic.
I really enjoyed it. It was quiet. It
was smooth. The performance
was great and it wasn’t burning
fossil fuels.”
TAKE-OFF: Gary Freedman is a tireless advocate for electric airplanes in New Zealand. He
hopes to see the purchase of more models which will bring down aviation emissions. In
2021 Gary Freedman achieved a world record breaking flight across the Cook Strait. It was
the first time an electric plane has made the 78km flight from Blenheim to Wellington.
The Alpha Electro is a
two-seater aircraft with
interchangeable battery units
which power an electric motor.
There is no fuel, the only liquid
in the aircraft is coolant for the
motor.
Freedman bought the plane
when founding Electric Air in
2020, making it New Zealand’s
first and only fully-electric plane.
He now flies it regularly from
bases at the Rangiora airfield and
Christchurch Airport.
Freedman loves flying because
it “turns your world into a three
dimensional playground”.
“You have stunning views
below you. It’s a chance to have a
bit of fun and play in the clouds.”
Even better, he says using an
electric plane allows you to fly
“guilt free” without worrying
about burning fossil fuels.
Originally from London,
Freedman says he has
always been outdoorsy and
passionate about protecting the
environment.
Since moving to Cass Bay
in 2018 with his wife and two
children, he has combined his
passions for flying and clean
energy through Electric Air.
“I’m a person who has
always loved the outdoors and
nature. Even as a young person
I was always pretty aware of
the sensitivity of nature and
biodiversity.”
Promoting knowledge and use
of electric planes in New Zealand
has become one of Freedman’s life
missions.
He claimed a world record
and milestone for electric planes
in 2021 with the world’s longest
flight over water.
The journey took him 78km
from Blenheim to Wellington,
soaring over Cook Strait.
“It was a fantastic feeling. We
had the goal of flying over Cook
Strait because it had been about
100 years since the first flight over
in a petrol plane.”
Committed to renewable air travel
• From page 15
The flight deliberately coincided
with the COP26 conference as
countries discussed transition
away from fossil fuels.
After making the move, Freedman
has grown to appreciate the
country as a place open to new
ideas.
“New Zealand does have a very
good entrepreneurial spirit, I’ve
found. A great acceptance of, and
interest in, new technology here
and it’s a very good country to try
new things.”
His passion for the environment
extends beyond just his aviation
business.
Involvement in native tree
plantings and pest control efforts
in Cass Bay give Freedman a sense
of fulfilment.
“Things like that can give direct
hope to an individual and help you
realise you can make a difference
even on a local level,” he said.
“Changing the way we fly and
reducing emissions from aviation
is the other end of that scale.”
His commitment to local
conservation work and national
advocacy all come from the same
desire to make an impact on New
Zealand’s environment.
“Sometimes people can feel a
little bit helpless and depressed
about climate change, so I think
doing any little things can help
people feel better about those
HIGH-FLYING: Gary Freedman often takes scenic trips in the Alpha Electro. He says the
aircraft provides a quiet and smooth experience.
really big challenges.”
Freedman’s career in renewable
technology started at UK
company Ecotricity in 2002.
As a head of department, he
organised the installation of wind
turbines on behalf of clients.
His business degree from
Manchester Metropolitan
University set him on track for a
career advocating and marketing
new renewable technologies.
“I was working a lot in wind and
then in solar as it became more
viable economically. My passion
for environmental work really
came along with the renewable
technology.”
From 2010, he worked at the
RES Group and then Airvolution
Energy helping to develop sites for
wind turbines.
After moving to New Zealand,
he has worked for Meridian
Energy and Harmony Energy
coordinating the development of
electric vehicle infrastructure and
solar farms.
Freedman’s interest in electric
planes grew out of his love for
flying.
“At the same time as my work,
I was also flying hang gliders just
as a hobby. Then I got my pilots
licence and actually started flying
small planes.”
The Alpha Electro is now used
for trial flights, pilot training and
as a promotional tool for more
electric aircraft.
Intrigued aviation enthusiasts
listened intently over Easter
weekend as the Electric Air team
showed off the Alpha Electro
at the Warbirds Over Wanaka
international airshow.
“People there are interested in
the old warplanes, but they’re also
interested in the future of flight.”
Freedman’s dream is to see the
use of electric planes increase in
New Zealand.
Current technology limits
the distance electric planes can
travel, but Freedman believes
New Zealand’s high proportion
of short haul flights, coupled
with a relatively green electricity
grid, makes it the perfect place to
experiment with the technology.
In coming years, Electric Air
is considering the purchase of
more electric planes and wants to
help convert petrol planes to fully
electric models.
Freedman hopes the company
will make a mark on New
Zealand’s emissions profile and
his work will help to pass on his
passion to his 17-year-old son and
14-year-old daughter.
“I do hope that they will be
encouraged by all the things we
do. You know we drive an electric
car, and go trapping. I think
they’ve both gained a really good
understanding of being good
neighbours with nature.”
50 years in the trade a major milestone
Five decades, 50 years, half a century – no
matter how you put it, that’s a long stretch of
time in anyone’s reckoning. And that’s how
long Greg Box, owner/operator of Amazing
Auto Electric, has been involved in the autoelectrical
trade.
It all started when he began as an apprentice
with Benson Bros in Gisborne on June 24,
1974, learning the nuts and bolts of the trade
and acquiring the skills needed to pursue
a successful career as an auto-electrical
engineer.
After spending almost seven years there,
Greg headed overseas, and over the following
eight years he worked in the motor trade in
the UK, and for a large part of the time, in
the mining industry in Alaska, Australia and
Africa.
Family matters brought him back to New
Zealand, plus he was also keen to start his own
business here. With that in mind he re-located
to Christchurch in 1989, initially working for
a local firm, before launching out as a sole
trader in 1993.
A decade later he established his current
business, Amazing Auto Electric, opening a
workshop in Coleridge Street and employing
staff.
As a business it has proved a great success,
and while it is a challenging trade, and
one that can be stressful, it’s a trade he has
thoroughly enjoyed over the last 50 years. He
says for a person that enjoys working with
machinery and fixing things as he does, it’s an
ideal career.
“For an apprentice starting out it takes five
years to qualify, but for those that can stick to
it, it’s a great trade to be in.”
With auto-electrical systems
being re-designed every five to
10 years, ongoing training with
online and on-site courses
is also an important part of
keeping up in the industry,
Greg says.
He is proud of the service
Christ Church
Cathedral
Restoration of the Christ
Church Cathedral should never
have gone ahead, because it’s
turned out to be a money pit.
The cathedral is not a tourist
attraction, it has been an icon to
the city for many years.
Sir Gilbert Scott wanted to
build the cathedral in timber but
changed the plans when a good
supply of building stone was
found in Canterbury.
So there is the answer, don’t
miss the opportunity, demolish
the cathedral and rebuild it in
timber. The existing stones could
be incorporated into a courtyard
surrounding the new build.
If the debate continues, the
restoration process is only going
to take longer and be more
expensive. In its current state
it’s an eyesore and a letdown to
the city. There are many new
buildings surrounding the
square, and the cathedral does
no justice to them. It’s looks
unsightly and out of place.
The Christ Church Cathedral is
past it’s used by date. It’s time for
a change.
-Steve Atwood, Riccarton
In my point of view it’s very
important to preserve the
heritage building for locals and
YOU WOULDN’T believe
the lack of accountability,
misinformation and
the Christchurch City Council is
interfering with or mismanaging.
I am proud of the part our
tiny group of activists in the
demolition. Bishop Matthews,
the dean, the chapter, and the
all united in a desperate attempt
to bulldoze the partly-damaged
visible icon of the Anglican
Fortunately the synod listened
to our impassioned pleas and
voted against demolition. All
that the woke and incompetent
create more satanic despair is to
make a dog’s dinner out of the
restoration. I have offered many
times to head a fundraising
campaign for them to get the job
done quickly and efficiently.
Though I say it myself, there
much to promote the image of
this completely unique city.
The reason is that it was
founded by the English Romantic
The world has been turned
tourists. But since the restoration
cost released few days ago is
exorbitant, that money can
be well spent on building new
hospitals, schools and housing
for the community.
One way to achieve the
restoration and being money wise
is by keeping the less harmed
current building structure with
minimal repairs and demolishing
the badly affected area and
rebuilding it using modern
building technology. That way
the whole new cathedral will
have a fusion of old and new
features. After 100 years this
combination of old and new will
be in itself a heritage site to be
taken care of.
Artist bringing a dose of realism
• By Chris Barclay
HORIZONS CHANGE, though
the outlook remains the same
for Sean Fietje, a painter devoted
to a classical artistic genre.
In this age of selfies, vlogging,
Instagram and TikTok, the
primary school teacher turned
full-time artist continues to
study his own interpretation of
photographic memories.
Fietje developed a passion for
portraying landscapes during
his early 20s and teaching in
Hanmer Springs provided the
perfect backdrop.
Arthur’s Pass then took
prominence and he soon
broadened his canvas to
Queenstown and Wanaka.
Now 41, the father-of-two
should soon enjoy greater exposure
as negotiations are under
way to hang a print of his most
time-consuming oil painting,
the Arthur’s Pass railway station,
on a wall behind the Tranz
Alpine check-in at KiwiRail’s
Addington terminal.
Fietje applied some finishing
touches to this 350-hour labour
of love in the terminal late last
month, once passengers had set
off for Greymouth.
Art on public display outside
of a gallery setting is a positive
development for Fietje, who has
worked full-time as a realism
painter since returning home
from Hong Kong – the second
of two overseas teaching assignments
– in 2022.
“I hope to solidify my place in
the landscape market,” he said.
“There’s a lot of abstract artists
out there and a lot of impressionism.
Realism has taken a
back seat to the other ways of
making art.”
Fietje’s artistic talent became
apparent at Middleton Grange
School, where he spent his primary
and secondary education.
“I started winning little
colouring-in competitions when
I was six or seven years old. In
high school I was first in art a
few years in a row, that was my
thing, I was the arty kid.”
In those days he was drawing
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,
cars and animals. Dad had
10 acres on Jowers Rd, West
Melton.
“I lived on a pig farm so I drew
a lot of pigs, cows . . . our house.
Anything that was around me,
nothing really specific,” he said.
Fietje started dipping a flat
PASS MARK: Sean Fietje works on his representation of
the Arthur’s Pass railway station. Fietje’s talent was evident
from an early age, as seen in his depiction of the heritagelisted
original Middleton Grange Homestead on the school
grounds when he was a 9-year-old pupil.
brush in acrylics while in
Hanmer, focusing on Mt Isobel
while absorbing the techniques
of Kiwi painters he admired.
That catalogue includes Lisa
Weiss, Grahame Sydney, Kees
Bruin, Ivan Clarke, Tim Wilson
and Christchurch’s Brian
McCracken, who is inspired
by the wide open spaces of
the Canterbury and Otago
countryside.
Fietje earned his first commission
in the tourist resort when
a fellow teacher wanted the
then-24-year-old to paint a rural
scene for her husband’s birthday.
“It was a farm in the Hurunui.
There were a couple of quad
bikes, some dogs and a herd of
sheep overlooking the farm. It
took me 60 hours for $400, I was
so rapt just to have a hobby that
paid for itself,” he said.
Fietje also leafed through
the family album, painting
photographs taken during
teenage tramping expeditions
around Arthur’s Pass.
The stopover en route to and
from the West Coast is still a
profitable source of inspiration.
to rugged mountain landscapes
“Once you’re familiar with an
area and understand the colour
temperature, and you’re familiar
with which scenes are quite iconic
you know what to look for,” he
explained.
So Klondyke Corner is a
standout: “Most people have been
there, they’ve had to stop the car
and wait for others to cross the
Bealey Bridge.”
Fietje has experienced his own
go-slow with that crossing point
over the Waimakariri River on
State Highway 73, not that he was
caught in traffic.
Depicting the single-lane bridge
has been an ordeal, it took two
attempts a combined 300 hours of
trial and error.
“I painted Bealey Bridge about
five years ago, I got
about 80 hours in
and I had to throw
it out, I just didn’t
have the skill level.
“I couldn’t figure
it out and I didn’t
have the time to
solve the problems
(he was teaching
art in South Africa).
The riverbed, I just
couldn’t figure it
out.”
When he, wife
Daniella and
their boys Leo (4-½) and James
(19 months) settled back in
Christchurch, Fietje’s perseverance
demanded a return to Bealey
Bridge.
“It wasn’t until 4 o’clock in the
afternoon there was finally a really
soft light source and you got all
the shadows crossing the road. It
ticked a few of the boxes I look for
in a painting.
“I really want people to feel
they’re literally standing in front
of that view and looking at that
scene, really feeling that they’re
there.
“The only way you can do that
is by upping the detail and trying
to nail the colours as closely as
possible.
“There’s something about
having a photograph enlarged,
you’ve got all the pixels, but even
if you’ve got a really, really good
camera, you can still see it was
SELF PORTRAIT: Sean
Fietje, aged 10
taken by a camera.
“The camera doesn’t necessarily
pick up all the colours and the
shadows, all the greens of the
leaves. It can only do so much.
“I take a few notes when I’m
out there, then to turn that scene
into a painting where you’re using
literally pure colour from a tube
and then have that in front of you.
It’s quite an amazing experience.
It’s sort of hard to explain really.”
A picture can be worth a
thousand words. And several
thousand dollars.
His second version of Bealey
Bridge sold for $22,000 last
November to a Christchurch
transport, distribution and storage
company founder who had
travelled the route hundreds of
times.
Bealey Bridge
took 250 hours
to produce, the
troublesome
riverbed was
repainted six
times.
“I started trying
to paint every
individual rock
and that wasn’t
working,” Fietje
admitted.
“I did the same
pattern right
across and then I realised the
pattern changes between the right
and left, I figured it out.”
Fietje, who has never taken
an art class as a student, is still
mastering landscapes, though he
is pleased with his development
since painting his fellow teacher’s
farm and equipment.
“Over years and years of looking
at landscapes through the lens of
an artist you start to understand
how to create certain effects. I
know how to use tone now, to
push things in the distance really,
really far back,” he said.
“The palette is also very limited
now, I use five or six colours now,
it used to be 15. I pretty much only
use one green.”
• Sean Fietje’s works will
be exhibited at Windsor
Gallery on St Asaph St,
Phillipstown from May 4-5.
NOT A BRIDGE TOO FAR: Sean Fietje finally completed a portrayal of the Bealey Bridge at
the second attempt.
COMPLETE STOP: Sean Fietje recently finished his realistic interpretation of Arthur’s Pass
railway station.
The Christian
Education Network
Working together for the good
of students and families has been a
successful recipe for Christian Integrated
Schools in Christchurch.
The Christian Education Network
has been in existence for over ten years.
Aidanfield Christian School, Emmanuel
Christian School, Hillview Christian
School, and Middleton Grange School
decided in 2005 that there was much to be
gained by working together cooperatively.
They recognised opportunities to share
successful teaching practice, curriculum
development initiatives across a wide
spectrum of school operations as well as
cooperatively strengthening their special
Christian Character. They recognised that
their ability to serve students and families
was greatly enhanced by working together
Thursday April 18 2024 The Star 23
in a close and trusting relationship.
The success of the network has seen
other schools wanting to join in. Early
in the piece Rangiora New Life School
became part of the network. The schools
joined together to support the genesis
of Ashburton Christian School and
also culminated in with the opening of
Rolleston Christian School in 2015.
The schools have developed
interlocking enrolment schemes which
assists in providing transparent pathways
in Christian education from new entrant
through to Year 13.
A further strength has been a
cooperative engagement with the Ministry
of Education who have been pivotal
in assisting the network’s successful
development.
Burnside High School
Find Your Path
Burnside High School is pleased to invite members
of the community to our Open Evening on Tuesday 14
May 2024.
We are aware of the significance parents place on the
transition from Primary or Intermediate to Secondary
School and how important it is to make the right
decision about this transition.
Burnside High School is a large secondary school
and a centre for academic excellence. We have an
outstanding record of academic, cultural and sporting
success. The size of the school ensures that there is
an exceptionally wide range of subjects and extracurricular
opportunities. This provides flexibility for
students to follow a pathway suited to their ability,
interests and skills.
The unique structure of the school retains all the
benefits of a large school but with students in Divisions
of approximately 600 students. This ensures that our
students are known on an individual basis and are
supported and mentored by senior students, Form
Teachers, Deans and Guidance Counsellors. This
strong pastoral and guidance focus helps Burnside
High School students strive to excel and develop into
well rounded New Zealanders.
Students achieve well above the level of similar
schools in the attainment of NCEA certificates and
endorsements and perform to the highest level in
a range of local, regional and national academic,
cultural and sporting competitions. The school is also
renowned for its Specialist Music Programme, the only
such programme in the country.
The Open Evening offers Year 8 students and
their families a chance to view the facilities and to
experience some of the opportunities Burnside High
Marian College
My home, my family
At the beginning of Year 9, I was really nervous about
coming to school but everyone was so welcoming and that
made it a lot easier to adjust to.
At Marian we have amazing teachers who care about us and
our learning. When you have a good connection with a teacher
it makes going to school special.
People told me that high school will be one of the best times
of your life. I did not believe them until Feast Day. Being a part
of all the fun stuff made me feel like I fit in. I thought to myself
Marian is my place, where I belong.
I am so thankful for all of the amazing experiences I have
had. I am thankful for the staff and the students because we
are a family. I am proud to say that I am a part of the Marian
SCHOOL OPEN DAYS
Papanui High School
Our School, Our Success, Our Responsibility
“Our aim is simple... to provide the best
education possible for every student.”
At Papanui High School positive
relationships are at the forefront of
what we do. Connecting through a
responsive local curriculum we provide
an opportunity for all students to learn
in a productive and future-focused
environment.
The opportunity to learn from an
innovative and broad curriculum is
critical to providing a pathway that meets
each student’s individual needs. Papanui
High School allows for a greater range
and flexibility in subject choice including
the utilization of the secondary/tertiary
interface. This reinforces the philosophy
underpinning personalised learning and is
strongly supported by understanding our
students’ interests, passions, talents, and
ultimately their career aspirations.
We understand that for effective
learning to take place, it has to be
implemented in such a way that students
will be highly engaged. The school
does this in a ‘forward thinking’ way by
creating learning environments that allow
our students to see value in what they do
and achieve. Papanui “PRIDE” is what
we represent, and we demonstrate this by
having young adults leave our school as
confident learners who have gained the
appropriate qualifications and social skills
to become valued contributing members
of society.
All that we do here is reinforced by
positive relationships, an ethos of caring,
cultural responsiveness, inclusion, and
high expectations. The school highly
values the connectedness between
curricular and co-curricular learning
and forming partnerships with our
wider school community. We have a
philosophical understanding that the
holistic development of the student is
critical to individual success.
The school is working hard to
consolidate recent initiatives to ensure
sustained and continuous improvement.
You are invited to view our website, school
charter, ERO report, and/or contact the
FOCUS ON HEALTH
Thursday April 18 2024 The Star 25
Natural support for
healthy joints
Joint issues will affect most of us at some
point. They can appear in any joint, such
as the neck, back, shoulders, elbows,
wrists, hands, hips, knees, ankles, and feet.
Cartilage is the protective surface
between moving bones that allows them
to move freely. It is constantly worn
away and needs to be rebuilt. This repair
process slows down for most of us as
we age. The result is that some joints do
not have enough cartilage, causing the
joint function to be less smooth. This
is the most common form of arthritis,
osteoarthritis, leading to inflammation,
pain, stiffness, and reduced joint mobility.
Joint pain can also be a factor in falls.
Generally, joints with the most use or
stress show problems first.
Many people seek pain relief from
their doctor. The usual prescription is
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs,
or NSAIDs, which offer pain relief but
do nothing to stop the progression of
arthritis.
According to the British Journal of
General Practice, NSAIDs are not
recommended for long-term use and
are responsible for 30% of hospital
admissions, mainly due to internal
bleeding, heart attack, stroke and renal
damage. Research shows that all NSAIDs
double the risk of hospitalization due to
heart failure.
supplementary nutrients is beneficial in
A local Christchurch company, Kiwi
Natural Health or KNH, has produced an
advanced, high-potency formula called
“Joint Care Plus” to support healthy joint
function.
Inflammation of joints can cause
pain and slows the healing process.
Joint Care Plus contains turmeric,
ginger and black pepper to help reduce
inflammation and pain and enhance
digestion and absorption of nutrients.
The formula also contains nutrients that
have been researched to support joint
health, including boron, selenium, zinc,
manganese, proline and MSM, and the
highly researched glucosamine sulfatepotassium
chloride complex, as well as
chondroitin sulfate.
This comprehensive formula is in an
easy-to-swallow capsule. Due to the
number of nutrients in the formula,
taking two or three capsules once daily is
recommended to achieve the necessary
amount of each nutrient. A loading dose
of three capsules twice daily may be used
in severe cases.
A Welcoming Place For Fitness
Walk into Bodyfix, and you are greeted with
a friendly smile from the Team. Bodyfix is a
world class facility situated on 29 Leeds Street,
Philipstown.
“Bodyfix – Your daily training
fix” opened in May 2011. It is a
privately owned club that has a
really great atmosphere, it is a
clean and fresh facility, and ask
any of the members there and
they will guarantee 100% it is
top notch.
We wanted to give outstanding
customer service, be a place
where we know everybody’s
name and where the classes
are of a high standard, says
Moana Williams (owner) With
most of our Team having worked in the
fitness industry for over 30 years in a bigger
club many years ago – we wanted to have
a club that just got back to the basics –
providing a fun, motivating , welcoming &
most of all comfortable environment for
people to exercise in.
Along with the fully equipped gym there
is over 50 Group Fitness Classes to choose
from starting from 5.15am in the morning
going well into the evening.
Our Personal Trainers we have on board will
sit down with members to talk about how
we can help incorporate fitness into their
already busy lives. Our Personal Trainers
are some of the most experienced around & they
know a key aspect is to make sure that each
clients programs are specific to the individual
with having a real fun element for each session –
but most of all encouraging exercise
as part of their daily life.
A lot of members have made some
amazing friendships here at Bodyfix
and that’s what it’s all about. They
train together & many socialize
together and this is the environment
we have worked hard to create – a
very down to earth, social, relaxed
family atmosphere. It is a place where
this is a lot of fun, laughter, banter,
tears, loads of hugs
but most of all it is
a place that really
encompasses
everyone.
We are more than
happy to have
friends/family or
just anyone come
down and try a
class or have a
workout for free if
they are looking at
getting started at
Bodyfix.
For us it is about
removing the
barriers that often
stop people from starting at a gym and ensuring
our Club is a welcoming place and most of all
people know they are not just a number here, that
they will be well looked after by our Team once
they have embarked on their fitness journey.
United captain finding the fun again
• By Sam Coughlan
CHRISTCHURCH United’s
new captain is bouncing back
from some dark professional
days overseas – and enjoying his
football again.
Joel Stevens joined United from
Wellington Olympic this season,
after winning last year’s Central
League and National League –
where he was man of the match
in the final.
Before then, he’d had two
stints playing professionally in
Sweden’s second and third-tier
competitions, and spent time
with the Wellington Phoenix in
Australia’s A-League.
But Stevens said being at
United was probably the most
fun he’d ever had in football.
“We just play fun football. We
try and bounce the ball around.
“With all the young players in
the team, it just all works, it all
bounces off each other.”
He said his forays into the professional
side of the sport hadn’t
gone well, despite some successful
team results. He helped
Värnamo go from the third tier
to the first with two consecutive
promotions, only for his contract
to not be renewed.
“It didn’t matter if you were the
best player on the field, sometimes
you just didn’t play well
because you didn’t fit into the
system,” he said.
“Sometimes you have some
players you don’t get along with.
I don’t love playing with people
that are overly arrogant or anything
like that.
“I just think you should all be
mates when you’re on the field,
and enjoy it no matter what.”
But he said he still harbours
dreams of getting back to the
Southern League round 4
“If a professional club, probably
more at home at the moment,
like around New Zealand, came
to me, I would probably go, or
consider it at least.
“It’s not my main priority right
now, but of course I would.”
Stevens made the move south
from Olympic in the off-season
to be closer to family after the
birth of his first daughter in
December. He and wife Grace
are both from Dunedin, and have
family across the South Island.
Wellington Olympic after being recruited by coach Ryan Edwards, above left.
PHOTO: JIM WATTS PHOTOGRAPHY
Stevens said he had looked at
a number of clubs in the area
before deciding to join United.
“We were considering Dunedin
as well to go back home.
“Cashmere (Technical) as well,
I played for them a little bit when
I was younger and I know most
of the players because a lot of
them played for Southern when I
was there.
“I talked to them a lot, but then
Ryan (Edwards, United coach)
came to me with what their plan
is for the future, and everything
was quite shiny and I was pretty
excited, so I wanted to give it a
go, and I think it was a really
good decision.’’
Stevens has started the 2024
season strongly, scoring four
goals, with United winning
their opening three games to
sit at the top of the Southern
League table ahead of Saturday’s
match against Dunedin City
Royals.
Their closest challengers
are Cashmere Technical, who
slipped from their 100 per cent
win record after a 4-4 draw with
Coastal Spirit, and Nelson Suburbs,
both two points back.
Tech take on Selwyn at home
this weekend while Nelson travel
to play Universities.
In other matches, Nomads and
Coastal meet – both teams are in
the top half of the table.
Ferrymead Bays have also
impressed and host FC Twenty
11 who are rooted to the bottom
of the table, having scored zero
goals and conceded 26 in their
opening games.
UC aiming to improve on first round win
• By Sam Coughlan
UNIVERSITY OF Canterbury
are preparing to face a wounded
beast when they take on Marist
Albion this weekend.
Defending champions Marist
went down 23-20 to High School
Old Boys in round one last week.
UC head coach Daniel O’Brien
said he expected them to want to
make a statement.
“They would see us as an upand-coming
team, and I think
they know that if they can do a
number on us this week their
season’s back on track and they’re
flying.
“So I’m expecting they’ll throw
the kitchen sink at us, and they’ll
come out with everything they
can. They’ll be really disappointed
if they don’t get the victory.”
O’Brien said his team would
only focus on themselves.
“To be completely honest, this
HARD RUNNING: UC’s Jae Broomfield tries to evade a
Linwood tackler during his side’s 28-3 win at the weekend.
early in the season, we’re probably
not going to focus too much
on Marist.
We’re going to focus more on
what we’re doing and how we can
improve after our performance
against Linwood.”
PHOTO: HARRY ALLAN
O’Brien praised that performance
– a 28-3 bonus-point victory
against the side that dumped
them out in the semi-finals last
season.
“I think the defence was really
good, if you can keep Linwood
from scoring a try you’d be
extremely physical team as well.
“Still a lot to work on in terms
of getting the processes right, but
you’ll be happy if you’re going
to walk away with a bonus point
victory.”
Linwood will host HSOB while
Christchurch and Shirley will
square off with both sides having
lost their opening game.
Lincoln University and Sumner
will meet in the only match
between teams that won their
opening game, and Burnside
will be hoping for a repeat of
their 45-point victory over
Belfast when they take on New
Brighton.
Sydenham will put the DHL
at home after winning it off New
• By Sam Coughlan
AFTER TWO rounds, Halswell
Hornets are flying high in the
Canterbury Rugby League
premiership, winning their
opening games to sit at the top
of the table.
They are also in possession
of the Thacker Shield after
winning it off Greymouth Greyhounds
in round 1.
Halswell coach Ray Hubbard
said it was important to get out
of the gates early.
“We want to assert ourselves
early and be consistent weekto-week.
If we can avoid having
those dips in performance and
be consistent across the board,
then it’s going to hold us in a
good position throughout the
season.
“The challenge now is we’ve
stuck our necks out pretty early,
so everyone will look to lift and
knock us off.”
In this weekend’s magic
round, with all games being
held at Ngā Puna Wai, they’ll
face their toughest challenge
yet – Hornby Panthers, coming
off a spirited 26-all draw with
reigning champions Linwood
Keas.
Hornby have beaten Halswell
in the elimination final to knock
them out of the competition in
each of the last three years, but
Hubbard said he doesn’t want
his side to focus on past results.
“The boys have just got to
show up and individually do
their job and I think we’ll
be able to put on a strong
showing.”
But he said it was impossible
for his side to not gain some
extra motivation.
“It’s easy to sort of say (there’s)
no (extra motivation), but probably
subconsciously, yes.
“We definitely owe them a
couple.”
Hornby and Halswell will
clash in the final game of
Saturday’s round, with Linwood
looking to bounce back from
their draw with Hornby
when they take on winless
Greymouth.
The other match of the round
sees Riccarton Knights take on
Eastern Eagles.
THE CRUSADERS need to
“trust the plan” ahead of their
bottom-of-the-table Super
Rugby Pacific clash with the
Western Force on Saturday in
Perth.
Assistant coach Tamati
Ellison described the match
as “must-win” – a scarcely
believable statement, but
one that holds true for the
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Crusaders, who are six points
adrift of the playoffs.
“I don’t think positivity’s an
issue, the effort is there, it’s a
matter of making sure we keep
trusting ourselves and trusting
our plan,” he said.
The red-and-blacks have
made six changes to their team
with Christian Lio-Willie,
Mitch Drummond and Macca
Springer returning as well as
a new-look front row of Joe
Moody, Brodie McAlister and
Owen Franks.
Lio-Willie and McAlister will
make their first starts since
returning from injury off the
bench in the 43-40 loss to the
Waratahs last week.
George Bell, George Bower
and Cullen Grace have started
every game so far but the trio
will come off the bench this
weekend.
The Force are one point
behind the Crusaders and the
only team below them in the
table – their sole win coming
against the Reds last month.
We need your help to fill our beds.
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre has
23 beds for tamariki to stay during
times of whānau stress or crisis. On
average just 17 of these beds are filled
due to resourcing constraints.
Every empty bed is a missed
opportunity to support a child in need.
Donate today to give Canterbury
tamariki a safe place to sleep.
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre provides
short term emergency or planned respite care
for tamariki when they need extra support due
to complications at home.
Cholmondeley is an independent charity
and costs just under $3,000,000 per year to
run. 20% of this figure is met by Government
funding, and the remaining 80% comes from
the generous support of the Canterbury
community.
