PEGASUS POST Tuesday June 28 2016 3 News League stalwart farewelled • By Fraser Walker-Pearce A FOUNDING member of the rugby league branch of the Parklands Rugby Club has died aged 74. Rangi Tawhai passed away on June 6, the same day as his great-grandson’s birthday. Mr Tawhai helped to establish rugby league as an option for budding sports players in Parklands between 1978 and 1980. Mr Tawhai’s son Gary, 49, said his father was a “people person”, who was strict but loving. Gary said his love of rugby league was all because of the passion Mr Tawhai had for the game. “Dad started (playing) for Woolston, and then played premier grade league for Linwood. He was always playing league, never union . . . then he helped set up Parklands with three of his league boys, and started rugby league in Parklands,” he said. He said he played rugby league in Linwood until Mr Tawhai helped set up the game in Parklands, and moved clubs when he was 12. After having his own league experiences with his father in Parklands, Gary’s own kids also played for the club. “I have two boys and a girl. I ended up coaching my boys at Parklands from about five to 12 years old, and I coached them with dad from when they were about five to eight years old,” he said. Gary said Mr Tawhai was a “big part” of his kids’ life, and both his boys came back from Australia for his tangi. “At the tangi we all gave an anecdote from our time with dad, which wasn’t easy, but you’ve got to celebrate the good times . . . there was a big turnout for his tangi, 300 people at least,” he said. Gary spoke at the tangi about growing up with his father, and “how he got me into league”. “I talked about how every Saturday I would make sure I jumped in his car and went to the game, and just growing up with him really.” GOOD MEMORIES: Gary (far left) and Rangi (far right) Tawhai coached Gary’s sons when they played rugby league in Parklands. In Brief NEW MATHS PROGRAMME Education Minister Hekia Parata has paid tribute to a special partnership between Shirley Primary School, Ngai Tahu, Massey University and the Ministry of Education. Ms Parata said the partnership implemented Hangaia Te Urupounamu Pangarau Mo Tatou, a new maths programme for the school. She said the programme is culturally responsive and “supports students to work together” to solve maths problems. She said the programme at Shirley has been made possible by a generous $182,000 donation by Ngai Tahu kaumatua Laurie Loper. APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR The Registered Master Builders Apprentice of the Year has 29 entries from the central South Island region. This is the highest of any region in the country, and a 16 per cent increase from last year. A Linwood competitor is in this year’s competition. The central South Island award will be announced at a ceremony on August 25. DRAIN SERVICING The city council has progressed work on two drains in the east, worth up to $1.8 million. The Breezes Rd drain, and the number one drain located in the Shirley Links Golf Course will be repaired. Construction could start as early as later this year.
