Popular flying fox LIBRARY
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
AFTER A popular flying fox
was taken down due to noise
complaints, a petition has seen
more than 300 signatures to bring
it back.
The flying fox was installed
in the Prestons subdivision in
Marshland by Ngai Tahu, only to
be removed by the city council after
“two or three” complaints from
neighbours.
A petition was organised by Ian
Reid to bring back the flying fox,
and was met with huge support.
“I rang up the city council and
said, well, hold on a minute, who’s
complaining about it? And they
said they’d received two or three
complaints. And I said, well I
know at least 100 people who are
very keen to keep it,” he said.
Mr Reid gathered signatures
from local residents, and was overwhelmed
by their support.
“My family and a few other
people went round collecting
signatures one weekend, and we
got over 300 signatures for the
petition, and it’s still going. They’re
coming in daily on my email, so
well over 300 now,” he said.
City councillor Glenn Livingstone
tested other flying foxes like
the one in Prestons for noise level,
SILENT FOX: This flying fox at the Prestons subdivision was taken
down after noise complaints from neighbours.
to see if the Burwood-Pegasus
Community Board can take the
same idea as used in other parts
of the city, and implement it in the
ward.
A flying fox in Lincoln was
tested in March for noise level,
which registered 46 decibels.
That is an acceptable level of
noise for daytime use, but not during
the night when the limit is 41
decibels.
Cr Livingstone said after testing
other flying foxes, there could be a
solution to keep everyone happy.
“It was quieter, there was a bit of
noise going through the poles, but
the one especially at the Rolleston
Community Park I thought was
really good. The actual mechanism
was encased where it joins the
cable and seemed to be very quiet.
If we look at these options, we
could find a way to keep everyone
happy,” Cr Livingstone said.
Mr Reid’s petition will be put
forward to the community board
next month.
Ngai Tahu did not respond to
questions from Pegasus Post when
asked if the Prestons flying fox had
been measured for noise.
In Brief
UPDATE
An investigation into possible
locations for a temporary
library, to be put in place
while repairs to the New
Brighton Library are carried
out, is nearing completion.
City council’s head of libraries
and information Carolyn
Robertson said locations
are being investigated
for the temporary library
service. “We will be reporting
back to the Burwood-Pegasus
Community Board on July 4
with an update,” she said.
NEW MATHS
PROGRAMME
Education Minister Hekia
Parata has paid tribute
to a special partnership
between Shirley Primary
School, Ngai Tahu, Massey
University and the Ministry
of Education. Ms Parata said
the partnership implemented
Hangaia Te Urupounamu
Pangarau Mo Tatou, a
new maths programme
for the school. She said the
programme is culturally
responsive and “supports
students to work together”
to solve maths problems. She
said the programme at Shirley
has been made possible by a
generous $182,000 donation
by Ngai Tahu kaumatua
Laurie Loper.
ROAD REPAIRS
The Avonside and Linwood
areas will see more repair
workers over the coming
weeks, as the Stronger
Christchurch Infrastructure
Rebuild Team begins road
construction projects.
Woodham Rd is closed
at the intersection with
Worcester St for seven
months for major wastewater
repairs. Carnarvon St at the
intersection with Woodham
Rd will be closed from today
for eight weeks for wastewater
repairs. Access to Woodham
Rd, east of Worcester St, will
be via Sewell St and Rowcliffe
Cres. A no entry sign is in
place in Woodham Rd at
Kerrs Rd and at Ngarimu St.
BURGLED PROPERTIES
Properties under construction
have continued to be targeted
by burglars. On June 16, five
homes under construction
were reported as being broken
into overnight in the Prestons
and Marshland subdivisions.
Tools appear to have been
the target of these burglaries.
Police will be increasing their
presence in these areas.
Wheelie Bin
Stocktake
Christchurch City Council and Waste Management are starting the
Christchurch Wheelie Bin Stocktake in July. Properties will receive
a mailbox flyer when the stocktake is taking place in their area.
At our pre-schools, children
are the leaders of their own
curriculum.
We intentionally work alongside
them to develop and progress
their special interests and talents
as they start to build lifelong
learning skills.
What is the Wheelie
Bin Stocktake?
After the major earthquakes,
many bins have been misplaced,
stolen or damaged.
The purpose of the Wheelie
Bin Stocktake is to save on the
cost of the collection, disposal
and processing of material
which is paid for by rates and
to make sure properties are not
receiving additional services
above their entitlement as this
is unfair to other ratepayers.
The stocktake will save the
Council $9.3 million net by 2029
when its current contract with
Waste Management concludes.
RED
GREEN
YELLOW
How we are achieving this
As part of the stocktake, bins will
be allocated a Radio Frequency
Identification tag (RFID). RFID tags
identify the property a bin is allocated
to, allowing for a more efficient service.
Waste Management is carrying out this
stocktake. This will involve:
• Installing an RFID tag to the wheelie
bins allocated to your property
• The stocktake will take four weeks per
collection run
• Bins without a RFID tag will be
removed or no longer able to be
emptied
• The stocktake will take approximately
three years to complete city-wide
