PEGASUS POST
Warren Hawke, 64, is one the of the
driving forces behind the New Brighton
Duke Festival of Surfing. Born and bred in
the eastern suburbs, he has surfed since
he was a teenager. Sarla Donovan talked
to him about books and his passion for
Brighton
You’ve just finished running
your second New Brighton Duke
Festival of surfing – how did it
go?
It went pretty well, a lot more
positives than negatives that’s for
sure. We run about six different
events and we’re still learning and
adapting and changing things,
but the surfing contest itself
is possibly the biggest surfing
event run in New Zealand with
over 250 entries and that was
run in three days which is an
absolute record as far as contest
management and judging goes.
You’re on the New Brighton
Pier and Foreshore Society
aren’t you?
Yes, I’ve been a member for
about three to four years. It
backs the surfing festival along
with the sponsors that we pull
in. Without the backing of many
other sponsors and support
from the community board
and different grants groups we
certainly couldn’t run what we
do.
Community groups can be
hard work sometimes. Any
frustrations?
Not with the committee that
we put together. The frustrating
thing I suppose is the fact that it’s
difficult to get information out
there, to get the positives heard
about New Brighton because
there are a lot of great things
happening. We’re just one of
many community groups. I
think there’s been a survey
showing there are more
community groups in Brighton
than anywhere else in the
country, for the size of the
population.
There does seem to be an
awful lot.
Well, there are a lot of new
families that have moved into
the area post-earthquakes, a lot
of people that value the beach
life and really see the area for
its positives in bringing up kids
close to the beach. For that reason
they’ve hopped into
many different community
groups and see the qualities of
what it is like to live on this side
of town.
You’ve always lived there?
I’ve always lived on the east,
but we were in Rockinghorse Rd
for 30 years and in the back of
North Beach before that. I started
surfing in 1966 and have had a
stand-up paddleboard the last
few years – moved to the darker
side. But we’re on the beach every
day with the dog and our kids
live on this side of town. There’s
only one place to live as far as I’m
concerned.
