A NORTH New Brighton couple’s life
is imitated in a new stage show – Let’s
Not Argue.
Husband and wife David
Ladderman and Lizzie Tollemache
have put their real life
relationship on display as they
play husband and wife in the
Lyttelton Arts Factory show.
The play depicts the
best, the worst and the
funniest parts of the
everyday interactions
between husband and
wife, including the everchanging
gender roles and
dynamics. The 60min show
includes four fights, three
make-ups and 24 cups of tea.
Tollemache said it was the
scariest role the couple had
played.
“We have juggled
chainsaws and been in
life-threatening situations
purely for other people’s
entertainment, but this
is the most terrifying
thing we have ever done;
performing as a married
couple, with my own
husband, is just so real, ”
Tollemache said.
It’s not the first time the
couple has acted together,
they were both also in
Dunstan Creek Séance and
Mr & Mrs Alexander.

on Brighton
community
pool plan

THE CENTRAL New Brighton
School community pool won’t
reopen after failing to gain
enough community support to
run it.
The community group SURF
last month received a draft
licence from the Ministry of
Education to run the pool until
April 2019.
But it has now pulled the plug
as it needed $20,000 to bring the
pool up to safety standards and
running costs were expected to
be about $40,000 a year.
The trust initially believed it
had enough community support
to reopen the pool. But after a
survey was run in the community,
SURF has changed its tune.
The survey found that only 21
per cent of respondents would
volunteer as a lifeguard, vital
from a health and safety viewpoint.
It also found only 38 per cent
of respondents would buy a
yearly family pass for $150.

couldn’t handle that without a
lot of support from the community.

A REAL shame to see the plug
has been pulled on the Central
New Brighton School pool.
We reveal today the pool – a
key part of Brighton for decades
– will be no more.
It will cost $20,000 to upgrade
the pool and another $40,000 a
year to run it.
Support from the community
wasn’t there.
Only a handful of people put
their hands up to be volunteer
lifeguards, which essentially
meant keeping an eye on swimmers.
And not many were that keen
to buy $150 family passes, and
you can’t blame them for that.
So the end of an era for the
pool, which many will remember
fondly – including those
who would take a late night dip
after a session at one of the local
pubs.

Incident prompts defence lessons

MARTIAL ARTS schools are
running special self-defence
classes after an abduction
attempt in Parklands.
Police were called last month
after a man in a white van attempted
to abduct children on
their way to Queenspark School.
A similar van was sighted
outside Waitakiri School several
days later.
The Ministry of Education
sent a trauma specialist to
Queenspark and both schools
have asked parents to be mindful
of the need to keep children
safe while travelling to and from
school.
Police have not yet made an
arrest in connection with the
incident.
In response, Shizoku Martial
Arts has been offering free
kids self-defence classes at
Queenspark School.
Owner and head instructor
Chris Cameron has two children
at Queenspark and said he
wanted to give back to the community.
Up to 80 Kiwi children were
abducted or kidnapped last
year, Mr Cameron said, which
demonstrated how important it
was to know something about
self-defence.
“It’s a no-brainer to at least give
them some broad-based tips; it
can make them more confident
and give them a chance if they
get into a difficult situation.”
Mr Cameron said he thought it
should be treated like swimming
and become a core requirement
at all schools.
He would look at offering the
free sessions “as long as there is
a need,” and was also planning
to introduce longer, four-week
self-defence courses for kids and
adults.
Go-Kan-Ryu Karate also
ran a special safety awareness
and self-defence workshop on
Queen’s Birthday weekend and
has another one planned.

Anthony Kaiaruna said 22
children attended, aged from five
to 13, including some from the
Parklands area. “A few parents got
involved, too, which was great.”
They learned how to get out of
hand grabs and bear hugs, to be
aware of their surroundings and
practised drills like ‘the rocket’
and ‘the surfer’,
a method of
getting up off the
ground quickly
by kicking your
feet and pushing
up as if on a
surfboard.

QE II ASBESTOS-FREE
QE II Park is now free of asbestos
after contractors removed the
last of the contaminated material
found during the demolition of
the earthquake-damaged QE II
Stadium in 2012. The clean-up
has taken several months, with
23,000 cu m of material removed,
more than twice the original
estimate.
GYM SCHOOL MOVE
The Christchurch School of
Gymnastics’ proposal to build
new facilities closer to the QE
II Recreation and Sports Centre
is open for public feedback. The
club has been based at its current
location in QE II Park for 21
years but the cost of repairing
the building is high and it is
looking at options to relocate. The
feedback period runs until July 3.
ARANUI PUMP STATION
Construction will begin soon on
new wells, pipe work and a pump
station to supply Aranui’s water.
The new pump station, which will
replace the one damaged in the
earthquakes, will be built on Ben
Rarere Ave, opposite Wainoni
Park. Some trenching work will
be done on Ben Rarare Ave and
along a section of Wainoni Park.
Construction of the pump station
is scheduled for completion by
June 2020.

Chanel, a beautiful 17 month old Birman
arrived home late one Sunday evening with
a profusely bleeding wound on her back.
Her very concerned owners rushed her to
the After hours clinic where she was placed
on oxygen, given intravenous fluids and pain
relief. The xray taken showed Chanel had
been shot with two air rifle pellets – one was
sitting in her abdomen and one in her left
hind leg. She was also slightly anemic due
to blood loss. Miraculously she was still alive.
Chanel was operated on to remove the hind
leg pellet that night but it was felt too risky
to open her up and remove the abdominal
pellet due to ongoing blood
loss. Thankfully the pellets
missed her vital organs and
spine.
Chanel arrived at McMaster
& Heap Vet Practice on
Monday morning in a fairly
critical condition. She was
closely monitored and her
pain medication with a
fentanyl patch provided
her with continuous relief
– being shot would be
quite sore!
Chanel had regular blood
tests in house to check her
vital organs and to be sure
her anemia wasn’t worsening. Unfortunately
she was becoming more anemic. Kirsty
performed an abdominal ultrasound and
took chest xrays to check for free blood
indicating an active bleed. There was also
some concern about potential damage
to her left kidney from the pellet location.
Thankfully through all this her appetite was
great!
Prior to her
second surgery,
it was decided
that Chanel
would benefit
from a blood
transfusion to
help her red
blood cell levels.
She was blood
typed ( Type A)
and found to be
a match for Kirsty’s cat “Wolfie”. Wolfie was
sedated
and
about 60mls of blood was drawn from
him to give to Chanel over a couple of hours.
The donor cat has their red
cell levels checked and must
be Feline Aids (FIV) negative.
The following day Chanel
appeared brighter and
happier. We decided to
wait a further week before
operating to make sure her
blood levels were stable
and that she was producing
good numbers of red cells
on her own. The repeated
ultrasound and xray showed
that thankfully her left
kidney appeared normal
however the bullet had
slightly moved.
Chanel’s surgery proceeded without a
hitch. The bullet was successfully removed
with very little trauma, from just behind
her left kidney. That afternoon she was
rolling around, playing in her cage, able
to be discharged from our hospital. We
continued with pain relief and one week
later Chanel was near normal. This would
have been a completely different story had
her abdominal organs been penetrated or
her spine shattered. Thanks to her owner’s
rapid response, Chanel’s life was saved and
she’s never looked back. Also a bonus that
her dedicated owners have pet insurance.

Plan sought for ‘biblical plague’

want midge
swarm gone

BROMLEY’S MIDGES have
been described as a “biblical
plague.”
The comment came from
Coastal-Burwood Community
Board chairwoman Kim Money
at a city council meeting last
week.
After meeting affected residents,
the board asked the city
council to come back with short
and long-term options to try
and address the problem.
In spite of an $800,000
spend over the past two years,
locals say their properties are
inundated with swarms of the
non-biting insects over summer,
forcing them indoors and
making life a misery.
They say the current methods
of control aren’t working and
want the city council to look at
alternatives.
Ms Money told city councillors
it was a city-wide problem,
which everybody contributed to
through the wastewater treatment
ponds.
SOLUTIONS SOUGHT: The city council has been asked to
come up with new options to try and solve the problem of
midges in Bromley.
“We hope to make progress
on this issue. They shouldn’t be
living with that.”
Coastal Ward city councillor
David East, who attended
Wednesday’s meeting with
residents, said potential options
could range from new chemical
treatments to the “ultimate
and quite expensive” solution
of installing a UV plant in the
sewage treatment plant. This
would “obviate the problem
altogether,” but could cost up to
$3000 daily in power charges,
he said.
Mr East said residents had
described their windows
becoming black with swarms of
midges.
Shortland St resident Janet
Profit, who has lived with the
midge problem for 10 years,
said she and three other
residents who attended the
meeting on Wednesday “felt
listened to.”
She added she would be
prepared to go to court if a
solution wasn’t found.

“I’m disappointed for the
community, but you do have
to have buy-in. Maybe the
pool at Rawhiti School had
an impact. Or maybe it’s
indicative of how tired this
community is; we’ve been
fighting for so many things
since the quakes and finding
spare time for things like
this can be hard,” she said.
The Central New Brighton
School pool was to be
demolished after the school
merged with Freeville
and North New Brighton
schools in 2015, but SURF
asked the ministry if it
could investigate whether
the pool could be saved.
The money already
fundraised would be gifted to
school pools in the area.
Complaint made over library noise
wrote to the Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community Board
after what she said was an
“unsatisfactory response” from
the library.
She wants a warning notice put
up advising library patrons of
when the children’s sessions will
be on each week.
Her letter will be discussed at
the board’s meeting tomorrow.

real estate, his family

How did you get into real estate?
I was at university doing a
marketing degree, had no money
and needed a job. I saw an ad in
the paper, went in and applied
and sat my licence and got into
it that way. It didn’t cost as much
as it does now and it was only a
three-week course. So that was
about eight years ago. Before
that, I’d been a drainlayer and
water blaster for six or seven
years but it wasn’t what I wanted
to do with the rest of my life.
I needed to find something so
went to university for a couple of
years, needed some money and
kind of fell into it really.
What do you like about the
job?
Meeting new people, there’s
different walks of life everywhere
you go, whether you’re selling

And what attracted you to
New Brighton?
I’m born and bred here. I grew
up on Beach Rd and then lived in
Wattle Drive and went to North
New Brighton Primary, which
is now Rawhiti School. I spent
all my school years there and
my three closest friends who I
went to primary school with are
still my close friends now. I’ve
just always lived on this side of
town, played rugby for the New
Brighton Rugby Club since I was
four. I’ve never left the area and
don’t think I ever will.
Playing since age four, that
must make you a bit of a stalwart
at the rugby club,
Last year I played my 300th
senior B game. I’ve been trucking
along since then but this year the
body’s starting to slowly pack in
a bit. I’d like to make it to 2021
when the club turns 100 but I
don’t know if that’s going to happen
with the way the body’s going.
I’ve got a young family now
and rugby’s a big commitment
with training and things like
that. Family’s got to come first.
Tell me a bit about your family.
My partner is Kate, we’ve been
together since I was 21, so close
to 15 years. We’ve got a wee son,
Marshall, he’s two and a half, he’s
a pretty cool dude to hang out

hands and Mum and me are the
salespeople. Mum’s worked at
Chelsea Sugar for 20-odd years,
so she’s one of the big-wig’s there.

falling in love with the east
Most places in the world,
beach side real estate is expensive.
Why do you think it’s different
here?
I guess the Gold Coast doesn’t
have the easterly blowing
through it. We’ve got a different
climate; in the summer, every
man and his dog comes down
to Brighton. In the winter, when
it’s 2 deg C and the easterly is
blowing, there’s not many people
walking on the beach apart from
the locals. Sumner’s still quite
high end, I guess it’s a bit more
cut off. When I first got into real
estate, I thought Brighton would
be the one to go to, beach side
properties, but to find out it was
out by the airport and the power
lines was a bit of a shock. But
again, it’s affordable living and
it’s the people who live here that
make Brighton what it is. That’s
why we love it.
What’s your prediction for
real estate in Christchurch east
over the next couple of years?
We’ve got the schools (Avonside
Girls’ and Shirley Boys’)
coming here so that’s only going
to be good for the area. We’ve got
a state-of-the-art school in Rawhiti.
There’s a big master plan that
regenerate are doing with New
Brighton. It’s not going to happen
overnight but it will happen.

We’ve got the salt pools going
in, the New Brighton Surf Life
Saving Club is getting rebuilt and
that’s going to be an attraction
because they might have places
you can dine in, a bar and things
like that. I actually met with
the lady from the club the other
day because we’re going to get
involved with some sponsorship
with them and she was telling
me it’s moving closer towards the
pier, which is good.
There’s lots of things happening.
I guess they’ll have a flowon
effect for house prices?
It will but people still won’t be
priced out of the market, there’ll
still be affordable first home buys.
There’s Waimairi Beach, which is
a pocket of $600,000-plus houses
and that’s quite exclusive but
all around you can still pick up
something for under $400,000
that’s a three-bedroom quarter
acre dream. There’s nowhere
else in Christchurch you can do
that.
What else do like doing in
your free time?
Playing rugby, hanging out
with my son now takes up a lot
of my time and I love that, we
playing trains, socialising with
friends. I played bowls a couple
of years back which was fun. Just
hanging out with friends and
family is the main thing I enjoy
doing in my spare time, when I
get it, because, of course, a lot of
our weekends are taken up with
work.
You won a trip to see the Black
Caps in Sri Lanka back in 2011.
How did that come about?
My friend Shane Cobb worked
for Smith’s Cranes at the time.
They worked pulling people out
of the PGG building when the
February, 2011, earthquakes
happened. He was staying with
us at the time. Tony Veitch and
Radio Sport had a competition to
win a trip over to India to see the
Black Caps play in Mumbai. We
got a call from Justin Vaughan,
CEO of Canterbury Cricket at
the time. He said you boys are on
a plane in two days to Mumbai.
So on a plane we jumped. We
got held in India customs for
six hours because Radio Sport
hadn’t organised visas for us.
That was kind of scary, they had
guns and took our passports off
us. But we had a good time and
people like Brendon McCullum
were pretty accommodating. On
the last night we had a few beers
and missed our flight home. So
we had to phone good old mum
and get some money for some
flights. When we came down to
breakfast and all the Black Caps
were there and we’d already said
our goodbyes they said what the
hell are you boys doing here, we
said well, we slept through the
alarm and our flight has already
left. But it was an experience.

MANDARINS IN CARAMEL
SAUCE
Ingredients
8 Mandarins
1 cup Caster sugar
1 cup Water
1 handful Mint leaves, to ganish
1 pot Creme fraiche, to serve
Directions
Peel mandarins and set aside.
Into a small pot place sugar
and water.
Slowly bring to a simmer
and continue to cook for 10-15
minutes until mixture starts to
turn a caramel colour.
At this stage keep a close eye
on it. It will brown very quickly.
When it is a caramel colour
remove from heat and add ¼-½
cup water.
It may spit a bit at you, so do
this carefully.
Stir until syrup is clear. Cool.
Place mandarins in glasses and
pour over caramel sauce.
Decorate with mint leaves
and serve creme fraiche on the
side.
SILVERBEET WITH
PUMPKIN, PINENUTS AND
LENTILS
Ingredients
500g Pumpkin, peeled and sliced
2 tsp Brown sugar
1 Tbsp Butter, melted
1 Tbsp Sherry vinegar
3 Tbsp Olive oil
½ tsp Nutmeg, (freshly grated)
2 Tbsp Pine nuts
3 stalks Silverbeet
1 cup Brown lentils, cooked
Directions
Preheat the oven to 180deg
C. In a large bowl, add the
pumpkin, sugar, butter and
vinegar. Add two Tbsp of olive
oil, nutmeg, then season and toss
all together.
Grease an oven tray, add
the pumpkin and bake for 45
minutes. Meanwhile, toast the
pinenuts over a gentle heat until
coloured – approximately five
minutes.
Slice the silverbeet. Heat
a large frying pan, add one
Tbsp of olive oil and then the
silverbeet, season and stir-fry
for 10 minutes. To serve, plate
the pumpkin, alternating with
the silverbeet then spoon over
the lentils and finish with a
scattering of pinenuts.
GLUTEN-FREE LEMON
BISCUITS
Ingredients
100g Butter
½ cup Sugar
1 Egg
2 cups Rice flour
2 Lemons
½ cup Gluten-free icing sugar to
decorate
Directions
Preheat oven to 170deg C.
Beat the butter and sugar until
pale and creamy, add the egg and
beat well. Mix in flour and one
tablespoon of grated lemon rind.
Roll mixture into small balls
and place on a lined baking tray.
Gently press biscuits with a fork
dusted with rice flour.
Bake for 15 minutes until
lightly golden and firm. Cool on
a wire rack, dust with icing sugar
and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon
lemon rind when cool.

provide insurance quotes and carry out
those repairs quickly and efficiently.
To keep their customers on the road while
their vehicle is in the workshop, SMART
Repairs recently acquired a courtesy car,
and this has already proven to be a great
help for people, Maxine says. They also offer
a pick-up and delivery service if required.
As a small, friendly operation, SMART
Repairs specialises in small to medium
repair work, with no job too small, Maxine
says. Their aim is to provide personalised
service, and make it easy for customers
unsure what to do if their vehicle is
damaged.
