Plan to merge golf courses hits rough
•From page 1
“And I can’t see the point in
forcing the community down
a path they don’t want to go,”
he said.
Coastal-Burwood
Community Board
chairwoman Kim Money
agreed: “Our community
have made it quite clear that
they don’t want it (Rawhiti
golf course) to be used for
residential housing, but that
doesn’t mean there aren’t other
alternatives.”
The survey showed there
was little support for largescale
development. However,
there was some support for
innovative and adaptable
housing.
Said Regenerate
Christchurch chief
executive Ivan Iafeta:
“The proposed landswap
with Avondale
and Rawhiti golf
courses was generally
not supported.
“A number of people
who responded used
this engagement to show their
support for specific projects.
As we collate the feedback,
some common themes are
emerging.’’
Ivan Iafeta
But he would not rule out the
land swap idea as a possibility.
“A range of factors will
be considered in the
decision-making
process, including public
feedback,” said Mr Iafeta.
However, the merger
and switch to Bexley
could be decided by the
golf clubs.
Said Rawhiti vicepresident
Leon Zilinskas:
“We are not committing
ourselves to anything until a
lot further into the process.
Without details there’s no
way we can make a decision
on behalf of our members .
. . from what I am hearing
from the community, it seems
unlikely to happen.”
Avondale president Dave
Buchanan said the club was
divided over the idea, but he
has major concerns about it.
“Our golf course is owned
debt free by the club and we
also have just about completed
the rebuild of our new
clubrooms. Our club would
be foolish to put our asset at
risk, unless the proposal put
forward is a better option than
we already have and, at this
point in time, it is not.”
