Plans for the development, which will also include retail space, only include 64 car parks. Of the units, 22 will be ‘flexiunits’ with a room at ground floor level that can be used as office space. The vacant site, bordered by Colombo, Brougham, Buchan and Waverley Sts is being developed by Fletcher Living. At a resource consent hearing, neighbouring landowners Jan Veronese and Leslie Smart spoke of their concerns that the number of car parks would prove inadequate, forcing more people to park on the surrounding streets. Mrs Veronese who owns a nearby warehouse on Buchan St and Mr Smart owns the former Blue Jean Cuisine site. Automobile Association, which has premises over the road, has expressed similar concerns. However, hearing commissioner Ken Lawn accepted the advice from Fletcher Living and city council transport planners that the parking would be sufficient and recommended that the resource consent be approved. After the school closed in 1999 and the buildings were removed it has been used for car parking by nearby businesses. Mrs Veronese said parking was already at a premium in the area. “We don’t know how they have got away with so few car parks,” she said. “They could have perhaps done away with a couple of apartments and put a bit more car parking in there . . . once it is up, everyone else is going to suffer.” At the resource consent hearing, Fletcher Living argued that the 64 car parking spaces would be sufficient for a complex that had good public transport and was close to employment and retail services. While agreeing that parking provision would be adequate, city council traffic engineer Mike Calvert accepted that the streets around the site were used to between 90 and 95 per cent capacity during the week. Mrs Veronese said that even if some residents in the apartment didn’t have cars, they would be likely to be visited by people who did. However, she said her and Mr Smart were unlikely to appeal the decision. “We have got a chance to go to [the Environment Court] but we just feel like we would be like two ants.” The possibility of the city council putting in more angled parks on Buchan St was also raised at the resource consent hearing but no decision on that has been made. ON THE PATH TO SUCCESS IN SUPPORT: Hillview Christian School pupils Caleb Croker and PJ Palamo, both 9, got to put their passes, kicks and sidesteps to the test at a recent rugby fun day at Burnside Park. Caleb and PJ’s year five team won two out of three games, while the school’s year six team and all girls team were both unbeaten in their games. The year four team picked up a win in their final game.
