Also on page 1 today we have some more good news – the Rowley Resource Centre has raised enough money to get its garage rebuilt. This is a big deal for the Hillmorton area; the centre is a well patronised organisation and the garage has been the focal point of its activities. SOUTHERN VIEW Tuesday January 10 2017 3 News Sign of the Kiwi cafe returns • By Caitlin Miles AFTER NEARLY six years, the Sign of the Kiwi will reopen later this month. The building at the top of Dyers Pass Rd was closed following the September 4, 2010, earthquake. It suffered further damage on February 22, 2011. Before it was closed, it had a cafe and shop. The cafe will reopen on January 23 after more than $600,000 in strengthening work. The Sign of the Takahe, another protected heritage building, was also closed for repair work following the February 2011 earthquake. Work on the building began in 2015 and it is set to open next month. City council heritage rebuild programme manager Richie Moyle said the Sign of the Kiwi building was a piece of “old world heritage.” “The Sign of the Kiwi is a treasure of national significance,” he said. The Category 1 listed heritage building was built in 1916 and 1917. During its restoration and repair work, contractors found song lyrics scrawled on the roof from an Eileen Barton song, which was released in the 1950s. The message read: “If we had of known you were coming we’d of baked a cake.” City council heritage adviser Gareth Wright said it was likely the message was written by tradespeople when they battened the roof of the Sign of the Kiwi in the 1950s. Cashmere Ward city councillor Tim Scandrett said it will be exciting to have the cafe open again so locals and visitors can take in the views. “It will be great to be able to sit up there, enjoy an ice cream and the weather, and just look at one of the best views in Canterbury,” Cr Scandrett said. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN In Brief RIVER FILTER A new $1.5 million filtration system could help clean up the Heathcote River and reduce flooding in Woolston. The filtration device could reduce dissolved metals by up to 25 per cent and sediment by 40 to 50 per cent. The filtration device would be housed in the planned new pump station at Richardson Tce, due to be built in 2017. ROAD CLOSURE Sparks Rd will be closed between Sutherlands Rd and Hendersons Rd from today due to the installation of the Southeast Halswell Waste Water Scheme. The road will be closed until January 29. Detours have been set up via Hendersons and Halswell Rds, and via Cashmere Rd. BOWLING CLUB SAVED The Spreydon Bowling Club won’t close down now that the Kereru Sports and Cultural Club has taken over its premises at 71 Domain Tce. The Kereru club needed a new home after the building it used at Coronation Hall burnt down. The Kereru club has taken over the lease of the bowling club grounds and will maintain the bowling lawn for at least the next five years.
