Frame to line up against 

Tour De France winner

FORMER CASHMERE High 

School student Alex Frame will 

take on the world’s best cyclist 

next month. 

The 23-year-old will go up 

against current Tour De France 

champion Chris Froome, who 

will ride for Team Sky at the 

Herald Sun Tour in Victoria, 

Australia. The strong international 

field also includes 

Columbia’s Esteban Chaves who 

finished second overall in last 

year’s Giro d’Italia. 

Frame is part of the six man 

JLT-Condor team that will compete 

in the tour from February 

1-5. 

Frame will be disappointed 

with his 18th place finish at 

the national men’s road race 

championship in Napier at the 

weekend, however, he can now 

turn his attention to riding with 

some of the world’s best across 

the Tasman. 

Frame attended Cashmere 

between 2007 and 2011 before 

pursuing a professional cycling 

career. 

In 2015 he was part of the 

New Zealand team that won 

a gold medal in the men’s 

4000m team pursuit at the UCI 

Track World Championships in 

Paris.

Centre’s 

$60,000 

target 

reached 

for new 

garage

ROWLEY RESOURCE Centre has 

finally hit its funding target to get 

the garage rebuilt meaning more 

activities will be available. 

The centre needed between 

$50,000-$60,000 to rebuild the garage 

to allow for activities to move 

out of the main building, which 

centre manager Donna McAleer 

said is vital. 

In November 2015 the centre 

shifted to its current site on Rowley 

Ave and while the building could 

be used, the garage couldn’t due 

to earthquake damage. As a result 

they had to cut back on the amount 

of activities on offer due to the lack 

of space. 

“We noticed our numbers start 

to decline because there wasn’t a lot 

of quiet space for people to come 

and talk due to the activities having 

to be inside,” Ms McAleer said. 

Since the move, the centre has 

been fundraising to try and get 

the garage rebuilt. Grants from 

various organisations and groups 

have played a part in beating the 

$60,000 target.

Sign of the Kiwi cafe returns 


AFTER NEARLY six years, 

the Sign of the Kiwi will reopen 

later this month. 

The building at the top of 

Dyers Pass Rd was closed following 

the September 4, 2010, 

earthquake. It suffered further 

damage on February 22, 2011. 

Before it was closed, it had a cafe 

and shop. 

The cafe will reopen on January 

23 after more than $600,000 

in strengthening work. 

The Sign of the Takahe, another 

protected heritage building, 

was also closed for repair 

work following the February 

2011 earthquake. Work on the 

building began in 2015 and it is 

set to open next month. 

City council heritage rebuild 

programme manager Richie 

Moyle said the Sign of the Kiwi 

building was a piece of “old 

world heritage.” 

“The Sign of the Kiwi is a 

treasure of national significance,” 

he said. 

The Category 1 listed heritage 

building was built in 1916 and 

1917. 

During its restoration and 

repair work, contractors found 

song lyrics scrawled on the roof 

from an Eileen Barton song, 

which was released in the 1950s. 

The message read: “If we had 

of known you were coming we’d 

of baked a cake.” 

City council heritage adviser 

Gareth Wright said it was 

likely the message was written 

by tradespeople when they battened 

the roof of the Sign of the 

Kiwi in the 1950s. 

Cashmere Ward city councillor 

Tim Scandrett said it will be 

exciting to have the cafe open 

again so locals and visitors can 

take in the views. 

“It will be great to be able to 

sit up there, enjoy an ice cream 

and the weather, and just look at 

one of the best views in Canterbury,” 

Cr Scandrett said.

A new $1.5 million filtration 

system could help clean up the 

Heathcote River and reduce 

flooding in Woolston. The 

filtration device could reduce 

dissolved metals by up to 25 per 

cent and sediment by 40 to 50 per 

cent. The filtration device would 

be housed in the planned new 

pump station at Richardson Tce, 

due to be built in 2017. 

ROAD CLOSURE 

Sparks Rd will be closed between 

Sutherlands Rd and Hendersons 

Rd from today due to the installation 

of the Southeast Halswell 

Waste Water Scheme. The road 

will be closed until January 29. 

Detours have been set up via Hendersons 

and Halswell Rds, and via

won’t close down now that the 

Kereru Sports and Cultural Club 

has taken over its premises at 71 

Domain Tce. The Kereru club 

needed a new home after the 

building it used at Coronation 

Hall burnt down. The Kereru 

club has taken over the lease of 

the bowling club grounds and 

will maintain the bowling lawn 

for at least the next five years. The 

lawn will be available for use by 

bowling club members.

Missing war 

medals still 

a mystery

WELL-KNOWN rugby league 

identity Bill Whitehead’s war 

medals are still missing in action. 

Mr Whitehead, of Bishopdale, 

approached Star Media about 12 

months ago to try and locate his 

Queen’s Service Medal and Defence 

Service Medal. 

But he is yet to hear anything 

about them. He gave them to a 

friend, but cannot remember who. 

They had planned to combine the 

medals together. 

The friend noticed the medals 

sitting on the top of Mr Whitehead’s 

cabinet, and said they knew “a place 

that could connect those together.” 

“I can’t for the life of me remember 

who it was,” Mr Whitehead said. 

He said he wanted to hand them 

on to his “heirs” and is asking 

anyone who may know something 

about the medals to get in contact. 

War historian Alan Polaschek 

said he does most of the work 

on medals in Canterbury, but had 

not seen Mr Whitehead’s medals. 

His QSM was presented in 1987 

and he was awarded his DSM for his 

army service from 1950-1952.

Church rebuild a fusion 

of tradition and technology 


THE REPAIRED Opawa 

Community Church may look 

like the old one but is full of new 

technology after a $3.5 million 

rebuild. 

The old brick Methodist 

church on the corner of Opawa 

Rd and Aynsley Tce was built 

in 1907. It suffered significant 

damage in the February 22, 2011, 

earthquake. 

The church was officially 

reopened on Saturday after a 

two-year rebuild, with members 

of the congregation and the 

community able to look at 

the new church and hall 

facilities. 

The roof of the church was 

salvaged but the rest of the 

building was demolished. 

Opawa Community Church 

treasurer Bruce Hille said the 

new building incorporated the 

style of the old church with 

modern technology.

were reused, along with the 

rose window, which was an

important aspect of the church. 

Mr Hille said the rebuild was 

undertaken with the future in 

mind. Broadband, projectors and 

cameras have been designed into 

the building 

“It’s an absolute thrill to be 

back in the church,” Mr Hille 

said. 

The project took nearly 

two years to complete and 

cost $3.5 million. The church 

congregation took out a $300,000 

mortgage from the Methodist 

Church of New Zealand to help 

cover some of the costs. 

To raise the money to cover 

the mortgage, members of the 

church held several fundraisers 

and author Marlene Bennetts 

wrote a book titled The Little 

Drummer Boy. 

She said another church 

member asked her to write a 

Christmas-inspired children’s 

book. 

Mr Hille said the congregation 

had so far raised $75,000 

towards the mortgage with more 

fundraisers planned. 

Higgs Construction was tasked 

with the rebuild. Mr Hille said 

the firm was chosen because of 

the work it did on Knox Church 

in Bealey Ave. 

The city council also 

contributed towards furniture 

for the new hall, which is 

frequently used by community 

groups.

Crummer looking forward to reunion 

Annie Crummer found 

fame with hits such as 

Language and See What 

Love Can Do. She spoke 

to Tom Doudney about 

working on new material 

and seeing dyslexia 

as a blessing, ahead 

of her performance 

with Debbie Harwood, 

Margaret Urlich and 

Sharon O’Neill at 

Lincoln’s Selwyn Sounds 

concert in March 

IT HAS been a long time since 

we’ve heard anything new from 

Annie Crummer but the singer 

is hopeful her fans won’t have to 

wait too much longer. 

Crummer hasn’t released a full 

album of original material since 

1996’s Seventh Wave. Since then 

fans have had to make do with 

a best of collection in 2002 and 

three songs released in 2010 as 

singles only. 

While she is reluctant to talk 

about release dates, she has been 

working on songs for an album 

which has a working title of Project 

Annie C. 

“I have got a bunch of songs 

that I am dying to get out of the 

demo situation and get into the 

studio and smash that stuff out, 

I’m the only one stopping me,” 

she said. 

“I’ve got a lot more to say musically, 

I will just have to get over 

myself and get on with it.” 

Crummer said that while she 

was known more as a singer than 

a songwriter, she had become 

more confident dabbling in song 

writing. 

“Melodies come really good to 

me but the way I write lyrics is 

quite odd because I am fully dyslexic 

so the way I explain things, 

I don’t think it’s the same as a 

non-dyslexic song writer.” 

Crummer only discovered she 

was dyslexic well into her adult 

years but the revelation came as a 

big relief. 

“When I look back I think: ‘Oh, 

I have been blessed with dyslexia, 

that’s all.’ I just learn things differently,” 

she said. 

“I forgave myself for feeling 

so dumb all these years because 

I left school really early and 

now when I look back at all the 

subjects I took it had nothing to 

do with anything technical, it all 

had to do with creative stuff.” 

Those subjects included 

classes on art, Maori culture and, 

perhaps surprisingly, typing – 

because she could just copy the 

patterns without thinking about 

the words. 

That ability to recognise patterns 

helped her land a leading 

role in the Australian version of 

Ben Elton’s hit musical-theatre 

production We Will Rock You, 

based on the songs of British rock 

band Queen, in 2003. To get the 

part of Killer Queen, Crummer 

had to audition in front of Queen 

guitarist Brian May and drummer 

Roger Taylor. 

“I had to learn the English phonetically 

and that is actually how 

I learn music too, I listen to where 

heart is needed and where anger is 

needed and all the emotions, I just

really knowing what I am talking 

about, but I have just fooled everyone,” 

she said. 

“I can’t believe I got that role, if 

only they knew how I did it. But

over a word because I didn’t fully 

understand it and I had to dig my 

way out of it, live.” 

She said that while the way 

dyslexic people figured things out 

might be different, the outcome 

could be incredible. 

Crummer, who lives in 

Auckland, said she loved that 

performing enabled her to travel. 

She always looked forward to 

playing with Harwood, Urlich 

and O’Neill, sometimes joined 

by Shona Laing, with the singers 

typically doing about three or 

four shows together a year. 

She was looking forward to 

reuniting with them for Selwyn 

Sounds. 

“I’m a huge fan of theirs and we 

have the utmost respect for each 

other so it’s a joy all round, a real 

buzz.” 

The concert will also feature 

Kiwi rock heavyweights Mi-Sex, 

Dragon, The Jordan Luck Band 

and Jason Kerrison. 

When she was not performing 

with Harwood and co or 

going solo, she often joined her 

father’s band, Will Crummer 

and the Rarotongans, playing 

songs which mostly sung in Cook 

Island Maori. Crummer took a 

more low key role in the band, 

playing the pahu and putting in 

some occasional backing vocals. 

She didn’t mind stepping back 

from the spotlight and credited 

her father with setting her on the 

path to stardom. 

“He gave me the gift of music,” 

she said. 

“I do count my blessings, that’s 

a daily ritual for me, the fact that 

I can do music and have never 

had a job.”

Children’s Centre, but that 

turned into more than 20 years 

working with the trust and 

children. 

Mr Claude received a Queen’s 

Service Medal in the New Year 

Honours for his work 

The Spreydon resident first became 

involved with the trust to 

make a professional advertising 

campaign and when he thought 

about his own three sons he 

wanted to get involved. 

“I couldn’t help but compare 

those boys to some of those kids 

and what they had and what they 

needed,” Mr Claude said. 

He was invited to become a 

board member which he did for 

21 years, five of which he spent 

as president. One of his proudest 

achievements was progressing 

the trust’s financial status. 

“Over the five years we made a 

bit of progress which was important,” 

he said. 

During his time as president 

Mr Claude used his own 

marketing company to assist 

with marketing for the trust, 

particularly in the production of 

its Care magazine. For his work 

he became a life member of the 

trust. 

He said he “had an idea”

thought nothing of it. Then this 

fancy envelope turned up, it was 

quite a thrill,” he said.

Graham Leslie also received 

the Queen’s Service Medal for 

his 46 years of service to education. 

He was the deputy principal 

at Hillmorton High School, 

where he had worked for his 

entire 46-year career. In 2015 he 

retired due to motor neurone 

disease. He received his honour 

before he passed away aged 73, 

on December 22. His award was 

approved by the Queen before 

his death, so Governor-General 

Dame Patsy Reddy announced 

his honour was changed to take 

effect from December 21 due to 

the circumstances. 

Mr Leslie mentored hundreds 

of young teachers and generations 

of students over his career. 

He was also a coach of the senior 

boys basketball team, running 

7.30am practices and Friday 

evening games. He introduced 

the computer studies department 

and ran community classes to 

help the wider community into 

the digital age. 

More than 250 former students 

and staff paid tribute to 

Mr Leslie in a function held 

at Hillmorton High School in 

December 2015 to celebrate his 

years of service. 

Hillsborough resident Geoffrey 

Harrow received a Queen’s 

Service Medal for his services to 

mountaineering and conservation 

work. He is a longstanding 

Forest and Bird Society member 

and was responsible for the 

rediscovery of the endangered 

colony of Hutton’s Shearwaters 

on the Kaikoura Range in 1965. 

Mr Harrow has worked 

closely with the Department of 

Conservation and Te Runanga 

o Kaikoura to create a colony 

for Hutton’s Shearwater on the 

Kaikoura Peninsula to protect 

this species from predation. 

He established the Hutton’s 

Shearwater Charitable Trust in 

2008 to raise funds to construct 

a predator proof fence at the 

colony.

Rasy Sao of Hoon Hay received 

his New Year honour for his work 

with the Cambodian community 

in Christchurch for almost 20 

years. 

Mr Sao has been the president 

of the Christchurch/Canterbury 

Cambodia Association since 1998. 

He has helped numerous Cambodians 

arriving in New Zealand 

to resettle, find employment and 

adjust socially. He donates his 

own time and money into helping 

members of the Cambodian community. 

In 2010 he became a foundation 

trustee of the Christchurch 

Migrants Centre Trust, Te Whare 

Ta Wahi, as a representative for 

the refugee community. Mr Sao 

has also been a Justice of the Peace 

since 2009. 

Cashmere’s Roger Bridge was 

honoured for his services to business 

and philanthropy. He is the 

chair of the Rata Foundation and 

has worked with the foundation’s 

board to develop its strategic 

direction and the establishment 

of the foundation’s $25 million 

Special Fund. A one-off fund created 

to assist with the impact of 

the Canterbury earthquakes. He 

is a member of the New Zealand 

Institute of Directors and has 

been involved in the formation 

and development of new business 

ventures. He has held trustee roles 

with the Christchurch Arts Festival 

and the Re:Start The Heart 

Foundation. 

A NEW mountain bike 

track built predominantly by 

volunteers has opened on the 

Port Hills. 

The 3.8km route, currently 

called the Montgomery Spur 

Loop Track until it is formally 

named, is the first new public 

track to be built on the hills in 

about a decade. 

It’s the result of work by 

about 40 volunteers, contractors 

and city council staff. 

“It’s been 75 per cent 

volunteer labour, 15 per cent 

contracted construction and 

about 10 per cent council 

oversight, planning and helping 

to transport gear up there,” 

Christchurch Singletrack Club 

Port Hills track liaison and 

development officer Graham 

Allan said. 

He co-ordinated the team 

of volunteers who worked on 

the project over the past 18 

months. He’s been a regular 

volunteer, helping the city 

council with track maintenance 

on the Port Hills for 10 

years. 

The new track sits within 

Montgomery Spur Reserve 

on land that was mandated 

in 2010 for a mountain bike 

track. 

It’s close to the Rapaki Track 

NEW: The Montgomery Spur Loop Track is the first public 

track to be built on the hills in about 10 years. 

but provides an additional loop 

that’s designed for beginner to 

intermediate riders. 

The only access to the track 

is from the mid-way point of 

the Rapaki Track, but there are 

plans to introduce other access 

points. 

It takes about 25 minutes 

to ride, but Mr Allan said the 

track provided a lot of variety 

and challenges without too 

much risk. 

“The scenery looking out 

over the city is amazing. It 

has really filled that niche of 

a track that helps people get 

from the flat lands up on to the 

hills because there are no steep 

drop-offs,” Mr Allan said. 

“It gives them a bit of a 

playground where they can ride 

without fear of taking a tumble 

because there’s nothing to fall 

on but tussock. We’re really 

pleased to see it open and being 

discovered and enjoyed by a 

wide range of riders.”

Mitsubishi upgrades popular Outlander

I KNEW the media car 

evaluation fleet wouldn’t escape 

disruption after the devastating 

earthquake which crippled 

Kaikoura. 

A car which I was scheduled 

into was trapped north of the 

township, and I guess it is still 

sitting there and will remain so 

until that road reopens. 

That is of little consequence to 

the loss of life and the devastation 

those in the area are living with 

every day, we Cantabrians know 

full well what that is like. 

All car manufacturers and distributors 

are having to re-evaluate 

the way they move cars through 

the South Island and I’m expecting 

more disruption to the media 

vehicles I have scheduled. 

That aside, Mitsubishi did well 

to keep my diary intact, a brand 

new Outlander sport utility 

vehicle was placed in my care and 

it filled the void until such time 

as the Mirage I was originally 

scheduled into becomes available. 

The Outlander has just received 

another major makeover; interestingly, 

it’s just a year or so since 

the last facelift. While the shell in 

which it arrives hasn’t changed 

a lot, there are a lot more safety 

components built into the 

vehicle, and it has also had engineering 

changes which make it 

more capable and better value for

What’s more, the newcomer 

is available in seven, seven-seat 

variants, two and four-wheeldrive, 

and 2-litre, 2.4-litre and 

2.3-litre (diesel) variants listing 

from $32,990 to $56,990. 

The test car was the entry-level 

LS, albeit with 4WD capability 

and the 2399cc engine. 

Even though XLS and VRX 

specification vehicles get a huge 

technology boost, mostly for 

safety, the LS misses out, but 

it still has enough safety kit to 

qualify for a five-star Australasian 

New Car Assessment Program 

safety rating. 

New features on the higher 

grade models include lane departure 

warning, blind spot warning/ 

lane change assist and rear cross 

traffic alert. 

Elsewhere, the LS gets new 18in 

alloy wheels (up an inch), keyless 

entry and ignition, new centre 

console with electronic park 

brake, upgraded infotainment 

system with Android Auto and 

Apple Car Play, the latter aligned 

to a new central screen display 

which has deep and comprehensive 

graphics. 

The interior certainly looks 

fresher with the new additions, 

and it goes a long way towards 

keeping the Outlander appealing. 

It feels like a new SUV 

and, as I’ve mentioned many 

times before when I’ve driven 

Outlander, it is still a key vehicle 

in this very popular part of the 

market. 

Under the bonnet sits a wellproven 

four-cylinder petrol 

engine, the twin camshaft unit 

is rated by Mitsubishi at 126kW 

and 224Nm, that hasn’t changed 

from the previous generation 

model, nor has its transmission

are the transmission mapping 

management protocols which 

provide the driver with a more 

fluid feel under wide throttle 

openings, the acceleration 

process is smoother and quieter. 

And that has always been a 

hallmark of the Outlander, it is 

a smooth and responsive vehicle 

to drive, and that is part of its 

charm, I like CVT, and the system 

is now just that much more 

intuitive. 

The Outlander feels even 

more spritely, that’s probably not 

reflected in a 10.5sec standstill to 

100km/h acceleration time, but 

it is no slouch all the same, and 

through the mid-range that big 

four-potter delivers good torque 

and associated strength. 

On the subject of figures, the

Outlander is also a fuel thrifty 

vehicle. Mitsubishi rate it with a 

7.2-litre per 100km/h (39mpg) 

combined cycle average, and that 

fitted with the comprehensive 

trip computer display in the 

car, it was constantly registering 

around 8.8l/100km (32mpg) 

with a 6l/100km (47mpg) instantaneous 

reading at 100km/h 

(engine speed 1900rpm). 

I didn’t venture off-road in the 

test car, but I did take to a series 

of badly corrugated shingle roads 

near Hororata and can report 

it has spring and damper rates 

which absorb well the big hits, 

thus providing the occupants with 

a controlled and comfortable ride. 

When it comes time to 

tackle a quick corner or two the 

Outlander feels stable and strong 

through the steering. Body movement 

is noticeable, but it is well 

controlled. 

The Outlander has been a huge 

success story for Mitsubishi, and 

that level of acceptance doesn’t 

appear to be waning. I guess 

some of its appeal can be attributed 

to Mitsubishi’s comprehensive 

10-year warranty programme, 

but also the fact it is a versatile 

seven-seater which is big but not 

oversize. 

When it comes time to go full 

force into another generation 

model, Mitsubishi will be well 

aware the current Outlander is 

going to be a 14km

Blood Pressure is an indicator of 

cardiovascular as well as overall health. 

Healthy blood flow is vital for a healthy 

body as the blood plasma transports 

nutrients, hormones, metabolic waste, 

oxygen and CO2 throughout the body. An 

area in the brain keeps check on blood flow 

to ensure health of all cells and the organs 

they make up. If blood flow is reduced the 

brain will try to normalise blood flow by 

adjusting the heart strength, frequency 

(Pulse Rate) as well as the width of blood 

vessels all via the nervous system. Over 

a period of time the blood pressure may 

keep increasing due to the deterioration 

of blood flow. A higher B/P is not ideal 

and is considered a major risk factor for 

strokes, aneurysm, organ failure and heart 

failure. Even moderate elevation of B/P is 

considered a major reason for shorter life 

expectancy. If we can maintain our B/P in 

the normal range our overall health will be 

improved. Systolic B/P (The upper figure) 

is when the heart contracts and pushes 

blood around the body. Ideally at rest this 

should be between 100 to 120. The diastolic 

B/P (The lower figure) is the pressure in the 

arteries between beats and ideally at rest 

this should be between 60 to 70. 

It has been found in around 90% of 

cases high blood pressure is caused by 

an increase in the resistance to blood 

flow in the blood vessels. It is believed
