will know his
fate tomorrow
• By Dylan Smits
CONVICTED double murderer
Scott Watson will know
tomorrow afternoon if his
fifth bid for freedom has been
successful.
Watson will appear before
the Parole Board tomorrow
morning, his first since November
2021 when he was denied
release.
The board then found he was
well behaved in prison but had
tested a high psychopathy
score.
Watson is also appearing
before the Court of Appeal in
June in an attempt to get his
conviction overturned. His
application to include an
academic report on eyewitness
memory in the upcoming
appeal was thrown out by Court
of Appeal on May 21.
Watson is serving a life
sentence for the 1998 murders
of Ben Smart, 21, and Olivia
Hope, 17. He has always
maintained his innocence for
the murders.
Smart and Hope’s bodies
have never been found. They
had been at a New Year’s Eve
party at Furneaux Lodge in the
Marlborough Sounds.
They were last seen about 4am
on January 1, when the pair
were dropped off with a mystery
man to a yacht by water-taxi
driver Guy Wallace, who was a
bar tender at the lodge.
Wallace did not initially
identify Watson as the mystery
man, but later said when shown
other photos he believed the
man resembled Watson. He
later recanted that saying he
believed Watson had been
wrongly convicted.
Wallace committed suicide in
Greymouth in 2021.
Watson is scheduled to appear
before the Parole Board at
10.30am tomorrow.
Newton
CHRISTCHURCH has grown
by 6.1 per cent, 2023 Census data
shows.
Over the past decade, its population
has risen from 341,469 to
391,383. Christchurch now makes
up 7.8 per cent of New Zealand’s
population.
The figures
show New Zealand’s
population
was 4,993,923
million when the
count was carried
out in March
last year, with
the population
growing by about
Rosemary
Goodyear
295,000 since 2018, with growth
stunted due to Covid-19 and fewer
babies being born.
Stats NZ principal analyst Rosemary
Goodyear told RNZ after
“unusually high growth” between
the 2013 and 2018 censuses, the
growth rate had nearly halved,
from 10.8 per cent to 6.3 per cent.
“Migration fell off a cliff with
Covid . . . but we’ve also had a
lower fertility rate.”
Christchurch had the lowest
rate of increase, compared to
neighbouring districts.
The Selwyn District’s
population continues to be by far
the fastest growing in the country.
Teen nabbed at ‘absolutely stupid’ speed
A TEENAGER faces a serious
driving charge and has lost his
car after the vehicle was caught
at an “absolutely stupid” speed.
Christchurch Highway Patrol
Constable Scott Agnew had
just finished writing a ticket
at 12.55pm on Tuesday when
a Holden Commodore came
“screaming down the Southern
Motorway” at more than
double the legal speed limit.
THE CITY council has bowed to
the Arts Centre plea for funding
– but not the $1.83m it wanted.
Instead, it is likely the Arts
Centre will get about $900,000 a
year to keep it afloat after a meeting
between interim city council
chief executive Mary Richardson
and Arts Centre director Philip
Aldridge.
The agreement
will now go to
city councillors
to approve
alongside other
spending over
the next 10 years
as part of its
Long Term Plan.
The deal
comes after The
Star asked readers
their views
on funding for
the Arts Centre,
which was severely
damaged
in the earthquakes.
To read
the responses go
to page 15.
The Arts Centre’s
campaign for more funding
– specifically $1.83 million – resulted
in more than 4000 people
and organisations urging the city
council to support it.
“It was an absolutely crazy,
idiotic speed.
“There are a lot of people
on that motorway at 1pm on a
weekday; a crash at that speed
would have been catastrophic.”
Police would not reveal the
speed he was clocked out, but it
is understood to be more than
200km/h.
With the help of the public
providing information, the
Richardson told Stuff the
centre is willing to stop funding
for repairs and maintenance in
the short term (about $900,000
annually), so long as the city
council can help it find a sustainable
funding model in the long
term.
More than half of all submissions
to the city council’s
draft 10-year spending budget
vehicle was located at a car
park in Rolleston, where police
found two witnesses yelling at
the suspected driver while he
checked a damaged wheel.
“This was a horrendous
speed, putting other road users
at extreme risk.
“He’s very lucky, as are all the
other people who were on that
road with him,” Agnew said.
“As a driver, the decisions you
mentioned they supported the
funding request.
Despite Mayor Phil
Mauger criticising the
centre’s operations,
some councillors argued
agreeing to fund the
centre would show the
public the council had
listened.
Cr Aaron Keown said
make impact not only you and
those in your vehicle, but everyone
else on the road around
you.”
The 18-year-old has been
summonsed to appear in court
on a charge of dangerous driving.
His Holden Commodore
has been impounded for 28
days and his licence will be
suspended.
Council likely to meet
Arts Centre halfway
Mary
Richardson
Philip
Aldridge
RESPONSE: More than 4000 people and organisations urged the city council to support
the Arts Centre in their Long Term Plan submissions.
Aaron
Keown
many people would argue the
city council wasn’t run efficiently
either, and warned
against “throwing stones
in glass houses”, Stuff
reported.
Keown said the
support for the centre
was overwhelming, and
“however we skin that cat,
the cats got to be skinned”.
NEWS 3
In Brief
Cathedral funding
may be withheld
Millions of dollars in ratepayers’
money, earmarked for the Christ
Church Cathedral restoration,
may not be handed over if the
project is put on hold. Christ
Church Cathedral Reinstatement
Ltd received $3 million from the
city council in December with
another $7m set to be paid out on
August 1. But, if the restoration
is halted, the city council may
keep the $7m grant. At a Long
Term Plan workshop last week,
councillor Sara Templeton said
the 2017 city council resolution
to contribute to the cathedral
restoration stated the money
must be applied to the rebuild
Council staff are investigating the
conditions of the 2017 resolution,
and the council will discuss it
before August.
Powerline tampering
a growing problem
A spate of powerline
tampering and copper thefts
in Christchurch has caused
power outages, police say. Senior
Sergeant Roy Appley said reports
of powerline tampering and
copper and electrical supply
thefts have increased over the
past 10 days. Officers are talking
to scrap metal dealers as part of
the investigation, Appley said.
Man charged after
standoff with police
A 41-year-old man has been
charged with threatening to kill,
assault and kidnapping after
armed police raided a Mairehau
property on Monday night.
Police cordoned off a house on
Wanaka Pl and a 41-year-old
man was eventually taken into
custody after a negotiation.
Flight aborted twice
An Air New Zealand flight from
Queenstown to Christchurch
failed to take off twice on Sunday
after a suspected bird strike and
an “unrelated warning light”.
Flight NZ654 was cancelled after
the pilot made two attempts to
take off but was forced to abort
both on the runway due to
unrelated issues, the NZ Herald
reported.
Best mate’s life saved after son-in-law
• By Daniel Alvey
MALCOLM LYALL is imploring
people to skill up on first aid after
he had to use his training to save
his father-in-law.
Saturday, May 11 was meant
to be a day to celebrate. It was
Lyall’s 67th birthday. But the
dinner with family and friends
at his home turned into a neardisaster.
He was in the kitchen carving
meat when he heard his 92-yearold
father-in-law Eddie Willett
coughing.
Eddie was choking on his
dinner.
Lyall said it wasn’t unusual
for Eddie to have the odd minor
choking incident, but he was
always able to pull himself out
of it.
But then Lyall’s wife Nicola
called out to Lyall and said her
dad was not coming right.
“By the time I turned around,
his lips were blue,” Lyall said,
who is the deputy mayor of the
Selwyn District. The dinner was
at his Prebbleton home.
Lyall rushed over to Eddie
and gave him a hard slap on the
back, hoping that would clear the
blockage. It did not work.
Lyall asked Eddie to stand, and
as he did, Eddie collapsed.
The two people sitting either
side of Eddie held him up while
BEST MATES: Malcolm Lyall and his father-in-law Eddie Willett. When Eddie choked at Lyall’s
home, Lyall used his first aid training to perform the Heimlich maneouvre.
PHOTO: DANIEL ALVEY
Lyall performed lifesaving
abdominal thrusts.
“I applied the Heimlich
manoeuvre multiple times over
a few minutes and managed to
clear the blockage and get some
air flow.”
Lyall said he did not think
when it happened – he just
kicked into gear.
“When dear old dad choked I
clicked straight into first aid mode.
I was saying: ‘Come on Eddie,
come on’.”
After clearing Eddie’s airway,
“By the time I turned
around, his lips were blue”
– Malcolm Lyall
they carried him to the kitchen
to put him into the recovery
position.
Nicola and another friend had
already called 111, one using a
cellphone and the other on the
landline.
About 30 seconds before
St John and a fire crew from
Wigram arrived, two volunteer
firefighters from Cromwell,
who had been visiting family in
Prebbleton, came through the
back door to help.
“They (paramedics) in and
found he had gone into cardiac
arrest. On my kitchen floor, they
cut his clothes off and did what
they had to do.”
The paramedics cleared
everyone from the kitchen so
they could work on Eddie.
“As I got up to leave, they
were performing CPR on him,”
said Lyall.
He and the others waited
nervously as the minutes ticked by.
“It was all a jumble; I sat down
on the couch and took a few
deep breaths because I was
exhausted.
“I heard one of them say ‘We’ve
got a pulse’ and that’s when a sigh
of relief went through me.”
FAMILY: Lyall and Eddie on
holiday on Waiheke Island in
February 2023.
After the paramedics stabilised
Eddie, he was transported to
Christchurch Hospital with
daughter Nicola accompanying
him in the ambulance.
Lyall and his other guests
stayed at the house, had dessert
and some tea and chatted about
what had unfolded, while Nicola
texted Lyall updates from the
hospital.
Lyall said it took a while for the
adrenaline to subside.
Later that night, he joined
Nicola at the hospital.
Eddie is now recovering in
Burwood Hospital and remembers
little from the incident.
“I remember going over for
dinner then nothing after that
until I was in the ambulance,”
said Eddie.
“I was saying: ‘Come on
Eddie, come on’.”
– Malcolm Lyall
“I’m just thankful to be here.”
Lyall, who lost his father at 19,
said he treats Eddie like his dad.
“He’s my best mate,” Lyall said.
Eddie lives by himself just
around the corner from the
Lyalls, after moving north from
Oamaru. Lyall visits him every
day for a cup of tea and sometimes
a whisky.
“I take him to the pub and he
has a couple of pints every Friday
night and if he doesn’t get to go
the pub he gets very sad-faced,”
Lyall joked.
Lyall has had regular first aid
training for 50 years. Now he
is encouraging others to do a
course.
“I’ve spent 50 years as an
electrician and for the first 15
years I had regular first aid
training every six months and in
the last 35 years I’ve had regular
first aid training every two years.
“I would like to encourage
people to train and do their first
aid because you never know, it
might be your relative, it might
be somebody sitting across from
you in a cafe,” Lyall said.
“I feel privileged to have been
able to clear his airway and keep
him alive.”
“They’re from people
Mackie said the exhibition
Ethnic diversity continues to grow
• From page 1
It has grown 29 per cent since
2018, with its population increasing
from 60,561 to 78,144 in
2023.
Waimakiriri District has
grown by 11.3 per cent since
2018, with its population increasing
from 59,502 to 66,246.
Goodyear said the pandemic
between censuses had been “an
extraordinary period” and the
impact it had on New Zealand’s
population was starting to show
through where
people were
choosing to live.
“People are
going towards
places that are
on the outskirts
of cities or have
scenic values,”
she said. Rosemary
Christchurch Goodyear
is also following
a national trend of being more
diverse.
Since 2018, the number of
people who identified as NZ
European in Christchurch
dropped by 2 per cent, with all
other ethnicities experiencing an
increase.
The number of people who
identified as Asian grew by 2.2
per cent and now make up 17.1
per cent of Christchurch’s population
(67,050).
GROWTH: Christchurch’s population now makes up 7.8 per cent of New Zealand’s total
and is more ethnically diverse than ever.
PHOTO: STATS NZ
The number of people who
identify as Māori grew by 1.3 per
cent (44,022), the number of people
who identify as Pacific people
grew by 0.5 per cent (16,746),
and the number of people who
identify as Middle Eastern, Latin
American or African grew by 1.9
per cent (7422).
While the North Island had
the larger population increase,
growing by 213,453 people compared
with 80,745 people in the
South Island, the South Island’s
population had a higher rate of
increase. It grew by 7.3 per cent,
compared with 5.9 per cent in
the North Island.
The median age of people in
New Zealand also increased
from 38.1 years, compared with
37.4 years in 2018.
Census 2023 included questions
about gender diversity for
the first time, which will help to
quantify New Zealand’s rainbow
community.
However, the results of those
questions will not be released
until October this year.
Further data from the census,
including people’s transport habits,
household income and size,
and access to technology, will be
gradually released over this year
and 2025.
The previous census in 2018
came under fire after it heavily
focused on getting people to
complete the census online,
resulting in lower than usual
completion rates and under
counts of vulnerable populations,
including Māori.
Iwi counts were of such poor
quality they were withheld.
For the latest census, Stats
NZ increased the length of time
during which people were able
to complete their forms and held
1400 ‘assisted completion’ events.
The agency said an estimated
99 per cent of New Zealand’s
total population has been
captured in this census and 97
per cent of Māori.
Potholes patched but more work to do
• By Geoff Sloan
IT HAS BEEN an eyesore for
years, riddled with potholes and
full of puddles in winter.
But now the Hawke St
car park at the back of New
Brighton mall has had a major
makeover.
The car park’s transformation
has quietly taken place over recent
months, after years
of angst from residents
over who was responsible
for repairing it.
The car park has been
a problem for decades,
with damage worsened
by the earthquakes and
poor maintenance over
the years.
Previous attempts to coordinate
repairs with the 22
privately-owned sections of the
250m long car park met with
failure, but recent redevelopment
plans announced for the
mall appear to have jolted some
landowners into action, filling
in their gaps.
One frustrated business
owner who leased a shop bordering
the car park once asked
an obliging road crew to fill in
the craters on her space with
their surplus fill.
The overall New Brighton
Regeneration project is being
led by ChristchurchNZ’s urban
Rachael
Shiels
development team.
Spokeswoman Rachael Shiels
said the car park was looking
a lot better, but there were still
some potholes that needed to
be fixed.
“We’ve been working with
various landowners across the
car park to pull together a bit of
a comprehensive plan.
“There’s been some
recent tidying up, which
is really exciting, but
we’re looking at future
prospects for this space
as well.”
Work is due to start
in the next few months
on a pedestrian north/
south corridor extension
to Oram Ave, which will
effectively cut the mall in half
and condense New Brighton’s
commercial core from 11ha to
4ha.
“The community continues to
note the car park is something
that they’d really like to see
worked on.
“They’re feeling pretty good
that it’s looking a bit tidier at
the moment, but (they) still see
there’s work to be done,” said
Shiels.
REMEDIATION work at the firescorched
Ōhinetahi Reserve was due to
start yesterday.
February’s Port Hills fire burnt
large sections of the reserve
near Governors Bay, increasing
rockfall risk and forcing closure
of the popular Ellas Track.
The reserve is owned by the
Summit Road Society. It has
started fundraising for restoration
planting and investing in
rock stabilisation work.
“It’s a really popular track
that really does need to be reopened for
the public,” said society president Paula
Jameson.
The reserve was also badly damaged by
the 2017 Port Hills fires, which again led
to a restoration effort.
“The fires this time affected 20 hectares
rather than 80, but this time we’re having
Paula
Jameson
to deal with rockfall risk on the track,”
Jameson said.
The city council recently finished a
rockfall risk assessment, identifying the
areas where safety improvements were
needed.
Parts of the reserve will remain
closed until the stabilisation work is
completed. It was expected to take
one to two days.
About $30,000 is needed to purchase
fire-resistant native trees.
Jameson said the fundraising goal
will only pay for volunteer plantings
for this year.
“If we want to do more extensive
planting and get rid of a lot of the burnt
gorse, we’ll have to contract people which
will be a huge amount more.”
Mum ‘disgusted’ by parents shaming
kids at primary school cross-country
A MUM HAS lambasted fellow
parents for mocking pupils
taking part in a school crosscountry
last week.
Alicia Shaw
was on the
sidelines, supporting
her 6-and
8-year-old sons,
when she noticed
the comments
and behaviour of
other parents.
Alicia Shaw
“I’m so disgusted
by the
behaviour, the attitude of some
of the parents there and what
they said,” Shaw said in a video
posted to her TikTok account.
“And bear in mind, my boys
go to a Catholic school, they’re
meant to be taught all these
values . . .you’d think the parents
sending them would have some
of those values themselves. But
they don’t.”
The video of the May 14 event
has since been watched over
10,000 times.
In it, Shaw said the worst comments
were saved for year 3 and
4 pupils nearing the finishing
line.
“These are 7- to 8-year-olds.
As the run goes on, there’s
always a pack of kids at the back
who are tired, who are running,
walking in between, and they’re
really buggered.
“At the very end . . . this dad,
right by them, goes, ‘Oh, here
comes the walking club’ and
starts cracking up.”
Shaw said her focus was on
supporting the participants in
a positive way, otherwise she
would’ve said something to the
man, who had no idea how hard
some of the pupils had trained.
“Because how dare you come
at children who are tired, they
have been running their little
hearts out and they’re children
. . . (to) laugh at them, it’s really
disgusting.”
Multiple children were walking
past the man as he made
the comment and many were
exhausted and seemed upset,
Shaw told the NZ Herald.
“It was hard to tell if it was
directly from hearing him or if it
just added to an already exhausting
and emotional time.”
She also overheard other parents
talking among themselves
NOT ON: Mum Alicia Shaw has taken to social media to
call out fellow parents for mocking pupils taking part in a
primary school cross-country.
PHOTO: GETTY
and calling kids “slow” and “lazy”.
“My sons are not into sports
so it’s not something I have had
much experience with, but after
reading comments on my video,
it seems to be a common issue.
“There were many amazing
parents and teachers who attended
who were very encouraging
so it is sad some took time
out of their day to go and create
negativity.”
Shaw didn’t want to name the
school “as I don’t want it as a
reflection on them, but more of a
widespread issue with parents”.
For Shaw, the point of the
crosscountry was kids being
active, involved and trying their
best, rather than making sure
they won. Now she is unsure if
she wants her sons to take part in
next year’s event.
“My message to anyone attending
these events is just to be
positive and not to judge kids,”
she told the Herald.
“If the parents making comments
were in the same situation,
I doubt they would appreciate
others mocking them.”
One of her sons was in tears after
the event, and she’d watched
his young friend put an arm
around him and tell him what a
great job he’d done, Shaw said.
“I was beyond touched that
young kids can be so empathetic
in comparison to an adult.”
Bad behaviour by adults on
the sidelines of kids’ sport has
been the focus of numerous
campaigns. Canterbury Rugby
has teamed up with Ray
White in a ‘Keep it positive’
poor sideline behaviour, while
the national Good Sports
sporting experiences for kids
New Zealand’s website, only
7 per cent of the more than
900,000 Kiwi kids and teens aged
Most pressing issue for new mums
attachment disorders, expert says
For first-time new mums Jadah
Aramoana Coffin and Hannah
Baker, parenting is as much about
forming emotional bonds as it
is responding to their babies’
physical needs. They share their
pregnancy preparations with
Frank Film’s Sally Blundell
COT, WAHAKURA, bassinet,
nappies, baby clothes. In two
different homes in two different
parts of Christchurch, first-time
mothers-to-be Jadah Aramoana
Coffin and Hannah Baker have
worked through the required
checklist in preparation for their
new babies.
But what comes next cannot be
bought or borrowed.
“I don’t think it’s that
complicated really,” said
parenting expert and educator
Nathan Wallis.
“In that first year of life, your
baby is the centre of the entire
universe, and you
are their slave.”
But it takes a
village, he says,
to support that
one person, that
“slave”, so they
can provide that
vital intimate
relationship with
this tiny, yawning,
sleeping,
feeding bundle of humanity.
Nathan
Wallis
Where in the past, parenting
advice tended to focus on sleep,
feeding and bowel movements
– a hangover from a time when
infant mortality was high – now,
he says, the most pressing issue is
“probably attachment disorders”.
“Especially in that first year
of life, the more often your baby
feels they’re in partnership with
‘If you’re raised without
that intimacy, you tend to
be more prone to fear’
– Nathan Wallis
you, probably the brainier they’ll
be, the more resilient they’ll be,
the more fun they’ll be, the better
their quality of life will be.
“If you’re raised without
that intimacy you tend to be
more prone to fear, to be more
reactive, you’ve got to look after
yourself and you don’t get the
opportunity to develop the reciprocal,
loving, caring, empathetic
stuff that you get in the context
of a high quality relationship.
There’s probably nothing in your
life that has as profound a difference
as whether you experience
that intimacy as a baby or not.”
The village notion is largely
gone – only about 20 per cent
of New Zealanders live in the
same place as our parents and
grandparents – but in supporting
young mothers, said Wallis,
“I think we now have more a
family of affiliations.”
Coffin, 20, of Aranui, will be
raising her first born within a
three-generation household.
“Everyone’s
involved and want
to be around to
help with the
pēpi – and
looking after
the mama,”
said
Coffin’s
mother,
Karla.
Baker, 25,
of Papanui,
will be
sharing the
care of her
firstborn with
her partner Elliot Dowie.
“Even as a little kid I wanted to
make sure that whoever I marry
and have children with, he’s very
hands on. It’s a 50/50 game now.”
Related or not, that “family of
affiliations” allows the mother to
focus on that vital one-on-one
relationship with the baby.
“Because you’re not necessarily
born with all those skills to
know how to look after a baby,
how to attach to a baby, how to
respond to a baby, how to meet
their needs,” said Wallis.
That foundational relationship
also gives the baby a sense of
predictability.
“When you can predict what’s
going to happen, that calms the
lower brain, the survival parts
of the brain. When you calm
the survival brain, then you’re
bringing to light the front cortex,
all the good stuff in human
development – language, literacy,
numeracy but also empathy, to
understand consequences, to
understand the impact of your
actions on others. But if a baby’s
fearful, then you’re not evolving
that.”
It is not until about nine
months old that a baby will
recognise themselves as
a separate person.
With that, said
Wallis, comes
the fear that the
parent is going to
leave. “And then
they cling and you
get this separation anxiety for
a few weeks. Parents will notice
it – it’s when you can’t go to the
toilet without leaving the toilet
door open.”
Wallis’ advice – just go with it.
“Take them to the bloody
toilet with you. If you go, oh no,
I don’t want a wussy kid, let’s
harden him up, then you just
confirm to them that you are
going to abandon them. So it
makes it way worse.”
Now, just days after giving
birth, two new first-time
mothers are absorbed in the
everyday wonder of a new life.
Baker strokes the downy
cheek of her new son, Arthur.
“Milk’s flowing,” said
Dowie.
“He’s happy, she’s
happy.”
Coffin gazes at her new
son Te Awanuiārangi.
That’s why she’s
so tired, said
her mother.
“When he
sleeps, she
just sits
there and
stares at
him.”
son Te Awanuiārangi with
her mum Karla.
Council’s funding priorities questioned
THe city council needs to tighten
its belt along with the rest of us,
including the Arts Centre.
If the majority of people in
Christchurch cannot afford
higher rates, and many made
submissions to council telling
them this, then cuts have to
be made across many projects
including the Arts Centre.
There was a strong campaign
to Save the Arts Centre with
many making submissions in favour
of council funding. But the
Arts Centre will never disappear
so what are they saving it from?
Change of management?
Council needs to focus on
core responsibilities of water,
rubbish, streets etc during this
cost of living crisis. If we can’t
afford something, then we can’t
afford it.
– D Downward
I think our rates should be
used on the water, parks, street
lights, and other essential
things.
Roads should be left to the
Government because rather
than maintaining them the
council does silly things like
narrowing them, adding cycle
lanes and reducing speed limits.
It would be nice to be able
to support things like the Arts
Centre and Orana Park, but we
just can’t afford it. My rates are
crippling now, even with the
full subsidy, especially since the
rating value of my land (and
presumably everyone else’s)
almost doubled with the latest
valuation.
PRIORITIES: Readers are split on city council funding for the Arts Centre or whether it
should focus on delivering core services.
Funding the likes of the Arts
Centre and Orana Park are a nobrainer.
These centres offer elements
that are so important to a healthy
culture. The amounts involved
here are paltry when you consider
the enormous amount of money
spent on the council’s ego project
of the stadium.
When you consider the shortfalls
in funding for the cathedral,
you can’t help but see a pattern of
ill-considered expenditure for big
projects. Mauger’s own passion of
wanting to resurrect a race track
shows the mentality of some in
the council.
– Christiana Raphael
The Arts Centre used to be the
soul of Christchurch, the most
popular centre around with the
markets, shops, music and fun
events organised by the council.
After the earthquakes, the various
councils failed to recognise
that this event, be it terrible, gave
it the chance for a new beginning
for Christchurch.
It is now a city with a sport
stadium towering over it. The
Botanic Gardens are now for the
tourists with the council planning
to charge for parking in Hagley
Park. I think they will regret that.
– Dorothy Blindenbach
Belfast
Yes the council needs to
support the Arts Centre by
granting it the money. The Arts
Centre is an established part of
the Christchurch cultural scene
and a drawcard for tourists with
its proximity to the Museum,
Ravenscar House and the Botanic
Gardens.
It’s a great use of the old University
site and an irreplaceable
part of Christchurch’s history.
six years on the North Sea. I
I find it totally ridiculous
that we should have oil and gas
reserves in New Zealand and not
utilise them when we have an
energy shortage.
Bevan Sisson sports
column
Interesting column by Bevan Sisson,
(The Star, May 23), on most
recent All Blacks captain Sam
Cane.
Bevan is of course allowed his
opinion. Criticism re Sam Cane
goes with the territory.
I, for one, always believed Cane
was lucky to be an All Black, let
alone the captain.
I felt Crusaders great Matt
Todd should have been there
ahead of him. Matt was a fantastic
all round No 7 and a leader
in Razor’s early title-winning
teams.
I also think Sam Whitelock
should have been made captain
after Kieran Read retired. I
do agree with Sisson that former
All Black and Crusaders captain
Reuben Thorne received unfair
flack. He was an ABs captain
with a more than 80 per cent
record of wins and captained the
Crusaders on an unbeaten title
run in 2002.
It is subjective re what is fair/
unfair criticism. I believe Richie
Mo’unga, the backline maestro
for the Crusaders in Scott
Robertson’s tenure as coach,
received unfair barbs in his
time in the All Blacks. I hope he
returns to these shores sooner
rather than later.
been named as All Blacks captain, with Sam Whitelock his
preferred option.
Handing over the keys: Min Sarginson
on selling real estate, and retirement
Well-known real estate
agent Min Sarginson
has retired after 40
years selling property.
She talks to reporter
Dylan Smits
MIN SARGINSON lives atop a
hill overlooking the wide, blue
stretch of water between her
Allandale home and Diamond
Harbour.
Nestled away from the hustle
and bustle of the city, the
73-year-old has a prime view
of the bay area where many
residents have entrusted her
with one of the most important
financial decisions of their lives.
“When I started there was
a gap between Charteris Bay
and Church Bay and Diamond
Harbour. Now it all blends in
to one another. It’s really local
knowledge you need to know
when you’re stepping from one
into another.”
She founded Min Sarginson
Real Estate in 1998, hoping to
make a personal mark on the
industry.
With offices in Lyttelton,
Diamond Harbour and
Governors Bay, the company
grew into the leading agency for
Banks Peninsula.
“I always felt even when we
were the predominant player, we
could never rest on our laurels
because some good operator
could come in and they could
take you out,” she said.
Understanding the unique
requirements of her clients was
critical to the agency’s success.
“You have to know what
people are looking for in local
schools, how they are going
to travel into town if they’re a
commuter, that sort of thing.”
Since enjoying time at home
during the Covid-19 lockdowns,
Sarginson had been considering
when to retire.
“Before that, I could not
imagine not going into the
office everyday. That was my
identity. Then out of the blue I
got a phone call from the Bayleys
property manager in February,
asking if I’d consider selling.”
The sale to Bayleys Property
Management was finalised on
May 16, with Sarginson officially
retiring on the same day.
“For some time I’ve felt a bit
of disconnect, like is this really
happening?”
Her family was “surprised”
by the sale, but is “immensely
proud” of her career.
Born and raised on a small
farm near Oamaru, Sarginson
was the youngest of 11 siblings.
She was a well-behaved child,
she says, who enjoyed playing
games with her sisters.
“It was a fantastic lifestyle, but
the family was spread over an
entire generation. We weren’t all
LEGACY: Min Sarginson at home in Allandale. The real estate agent has retired after
selling houses for more than 40 years. Top right – Sarginson with her partner Richard Lyth.
very close with each other.”
Belonging to a large family
caused a slight rebellious streak
to develop, which helped when
starting the agency.
“It was like there were two
lots of parents and I think
being in that position as the
youngest gave me a sense of
independence.”
Sarginson met her husband
Euan through friends in 1972 and
they married in 1974.
“We lived in England for
two-and-a-half years, had our
daughter over there,” she said.
They moved to Allandale
in 1980 and built Sarginson’s
current house, which the couple
moved into in 1987.
“We had a shared sense of
interest in travel and we really
just fit together at the time. So, as
many did in those days, we got
married.”
A notable fashion and car
racing photographer, Euan died
of cancer in 2004.
Sarginson met her current
partner Richard Lyth in 2010,
on a cycling trip between
Blenheim and Picton.
Sarginson never envisioned
herself as a real estate agent.
She worked as a high school
teacher in England and then
‘There was a bit of a
reputation in those days
for real estate agents to be
a bit sleazy, whether that
was fair or not. I always
felt the house sells itself,
so I wanted to do things
differently when I got
into it’ – Min Sarginson
was a stay-at-home mum for her
children, Alice and Finn. It was
during that time her interest was
sparked and she took distance
classes.
“There was a bit of a reputation
in those days for real estate
agents to be a bit sleazy, whether
that was fair or not. I always felt
the house sells itself, so I wanted
to do things differently when I
got into it,” she said.
After getting her licence
NOTABLE: Properties Sarginson has sold over the years
include Margaret Mahy’s former home at Governors Bay.
in 1983, she worked at David
Murray Real Estate for 15 years.
“At that point I loved real
estate. I was doing well in it, but I
just felt like I was in a rut.”
Eventually, she felt the need to
strike out on her own.
“It was challenging. Especially
at first when people would
tell me ‘you’re brave’, which
doesn’t exactly help with
your confidence, but I pushed
through.”
Over the years, Sarginson has
sold everything from sections
to notable properties, including
children’s author Margaret
Mahy’s former residence at
Governors Bay.
The movement of wealthier
residents into the area has been
a dramatic change since she
started.
Sarginson says the cultural
shift was inevitable, but has
caused the bays to lose its
“pioneering spirit”.
“With all the developments,
many people have that sense of
change. I once heard the saying
‘the last person in wants to be
the last person in’.”
The increase in car ownership
since the 1980s has also been a
factor.
“The sense of isolation,
particularly in Diamond
Harbour started to shift,” she
said.
However, Sarginson says some
things about the bays have not
changed.
“The hill still forms a bit of
mental separation between
people. There’s things that
happen over here and things
in the city. So there is a very
different market of people.”
Sarginson describes herself
as a shy and reserved person
in most aspects of life, but to
succeed when connecting with
clients she felt the need to adopt
a stronger persona.
“I’m not naturally sociable, but
in real estate I have made sure to
grow my confidence by learning
the area. Now I’m very confident
when dealing with clients’
needs.”
Now she’s retired, Sarginson
plans to spend more time visiting
her children and grandchildren,
and going on cycling trips.
“It’s very beneficial to just get
out on the bike with your mates.
I also do yoga everyday, and
there will be a lot of down time
for reading.”
She has mixed feelings about
ending her career, but is looking
forward to more relaxation.
“It feels fantastic, but strange.
You no longer have this big
responsibility anymore weighing
on you.”
Next month, Sarginson and
Lyth will visit France as the first
big trip of her retirement.
TIME OUT: Sarginson at Lake Tekapo. A cycling trip was
always a welcome break after busy days at the agency.

the Football Ferns, Longo, 32,
has signed with Tech who will
compete in the South Island
Women’s League for the winter
season.
Longo scored in Tech’s 8-0
win over Universities of Canterbury
in the final qualifying
round for the South Island
competition which saw the side
finish top of their qualifying
group.
Longo has made 133 full
international appearances for
the Football Ferns but withdrew
from the squad for February’s
OFC Women’s Olympic qualifier
tournament in Samoa as “a
precaution to avoid aggravating
a calf strain”.
She has not been included in
the Ferns squad to play a twomatch
series against Japan in
Spain on Saturday and Tuesday.
Longo joins other former
Ferns Aimee Phillips and Kate
Loye in the Cashmere Technical
squad.
LINWOOD KEAS and Riccarton
Knights have made a break on
the Canterbury Rugby League
Premiership field with victories
over the weekend, while Hornby
Panthers snapped their losing
streak with a vital derby win.
The Keas and Knights finished
the weekend on 12 competition
points, four clear of Halswell
Hornets, with Eastern Eagles and
the Panthers one point further
back.
over Greymouth Greyhounds at
The defending champs led
24-0 at halftime before the
Greyhounds, who were coming
off a historic maiden premiership
win the previous weekend,
crossed first after the break
through Zebadiah Thompson. But
any thoughts of a fightback were
dashed by tries to Keas centre
Matthew Logopati and prop
George Faaiva.
Riccarton earned a sixth
straight win in a 22-20 nail-biter
against Eastern Eagles at Wainoni
Park. The home side led 10-6 at
halftime, but the Knights rallied
to a 22-14 advantage as secondrower
Sidney Tagicakibau and
centre Tristan Griffith scored.
Eagles front-rower D’Angelo
Siu-Tauti dotted down to set up a
grandstand finish, but the Knights
did enough to close out the match.
Meanwhile, Hornby arrested
a three-game slide and defied
Halswell’s club day support with a
gritty 20-14 win.
The Hornets took an early lead
with winger Jared Sherwin and
halfback Jacob Nyman scoring the
opening two tries. Asafo Gali then
put the Panthers on the board
before halftime and Christian
Fetu grabbed the first two tries of
the second stanza.
Joshua Aileone closed the gap
to two points with 10 minutes to
go, before a Tauvale Tauvale try
sealed victory for the Panthers.
Dramatic change needed to fix
unsustainable rugby landscape
WHEN WILL New Zealand
Rugby and the provincial unions
realise the game isn’t the shining
golden cloak of NZ sport. The
landscape isn’t changing – it’s
changed, got dressed and left the
sheds.
The Players’ Association
has laid down an ultimatum
to change the governance or
they will force an even greater
disruption.
Its chief Rob Nichol has
put the blame squarely at the
provincial unions for stopping
the introduction of a new model
as the unions struggle to keep
control.
The NPC and the community
game need to have a completely
separate amateur body. This
new body would realise it is
unsustainable to fly around the
country and stay in hotels and
pay players, in what should be
an amateur competition.
The salary cap for the NPC is
$1.1 million with some unions
reporting spending up to $1.4m
– money that doesn’t need to be
spent. That excludes coaches and
support staff.
The crowds don’t warrant it
and the viewing audiences don’t
justify it.
The competition format needs
to change.
One option could be a
conference system with North
and South Island conferences,
with the winner of each
conference playing in a final.
It should have a promotionrelegation
component for
something to aspire to. This
could also open up the door for
an extra Heartland team for the
South Island to be introduced,
such as Canterbury Country.
There will be many differing
ideas on how a new format
should look:
• Removing payments to
players.
• No day training but after
work sessions, with player and
team reviews done online.
• They bus to and from games
where they can, saving money
on expensive flights. Look at
the situation South Canterbury
ended up with, missing out on
a shield challenge due to the
costs of flights, stopping players
having a shot at the shield.
• Games played at parks with
no television requirements,
allowing them to be played at
local domains for everyone to
watch local players they identify
with. The success of Canterbury
v Auckland last year at Rangiora
Showgrounds proved it can be
done.
• The Super Rugby franchises
will have scouts looking at
these games and there is still
an opportunity for someone
that has slipped through to get
picked up by a franchise.
Now to the professional game.
Let’s be honest, most of the top
players have played minimal or
any club rugby or even NPC.
Look at the case of young
Jamie Hannah, ex Christchurch
Boys’ High. He is a great young
player with real ability. Straight
SPLIT: New Zealand Rugby Players’ Association chief Rob Nichol has threatened to form a
new body, which will be established to govern the professional game if NZ Rugby doesn’t
vote on governance reforms by the end of the month.
PHOTOS: GETTY
out of high school and into the
Crusaders Academy via Lincoln
University.
His path has been Crusaders
U20s, NZ U20s and then into
the Crusaders. No NPC pathway
for that young fella. Aaron
Webb, the Crusaders Academy
and talent ID manager,
identified his class early,
enabling him to be fast-tracked.
It does raise questions though.
What happens to the
professional players between
Super Rugby seasons? Could
the Crusaders do a longer offseason
tour to generate income,
enabling them to trial fringe
players and keeping those not
involved in the ABs, NZ XV
and U20s in meaningful rugby
before the next Super season,
while also creating much needed
income?
With any change there will
be issues, like where does the
Ranfurly Shield fit in. Does
it become an FA Cup style
competition? Is a new format
going to be manageable? Where
does the women’s professional
game sit? There are more
questions than answers and
many things that need to be
solved, but change needs to
happen and staying with the
status quo is not the answer.
• Sisson is a former
player, Lincoln,
Lincoln University and
representative coach and
New Zealand age group
selector
FAST TRACK: Young Crusader Jamie Hannah was
recruited to the Crusaders Academy straight out of
high school and didn’t need to follow the pathway to
professional rugby via the NPC competition.
A win to savour in a season of struggles
SOLID: Crusaders lock and Lincoln High School product
Antonio Shalfoon put in a big performance in Saturday
night’s victory over the Blues.
PHOTO: GETTY
THE CRUSADERS have
stumbled and bumbled through
the season. With one highlight
being the win over the Chiefs
in round six and a low light in
round 9 being well beaten by the
Force.
They can now add another
highlight to a struggling season
with the win over the Blues.
Both sides had motivation for
the game – the Blues cement
themselves at the top, and the
Crusaders need to get themselves
away from the bottom.
The Crusaders showed real
grit with a plan to take it to the
Blues at scrum time and in the
tight with the backs starting to
show some real direction in an
up tempo game plan.
What a great story seeing Antonio
Shalfoon previously from
Lincoln High School. A few
weeks ago his game time was
running out for Springston in
the combined country competition.
He played well and showed
the need for a big tight head lock
in that Crusaders pack.
Does Saturday night’s win
smooth over the lumps of the
season? Definitely not and a
robust review will be needed
from their training (why do
they have so many non-contact
soft tissue injuries?) to the make
up of the coaching group and
management.
But let’s enjoy the moment
and that can be sorted later on.
Rob Penney may have woken up
on Sunday with a headache, but
hopefully because he has had a
couple of celebratory beers and
not over the issues of the past
week.
The Crusaders still require a
lot of results to fall their way to
make the eight so they will need
to fight like they are the third
monkey on the ramp to Noah’s
Ark, and brother it’s starting to
rain.

UNDEFEATED boxers Jaeger
Pryce from the Riverside club
and Tylah-Jay Mathias from
Papuni Boxing Ōtautahi will
square off in a talent laden
South Island Golden Gloves this
weekend.
About 160 boxers from 33
South Island clubs will be
fighting for titles at the Hornby
Club with the 70-bout event
co-hosted by the Papanui and
Riverside clubs.
The weekend’s event is
highlighted by several mouthwatering
match-ups.
It starts off with the novice
division (five fights and under)
semi-finals in the Saturday
afternoon session where up-andcoming
talents will be looking to
showcase their skills.
Riley Te Ao from Papanui
takes on Marcus McKenzie
from Champ Nation Gym and
young talent Lochy Brook (PBO)
takes on Israel Reece from the
Arapawa club in Picton.
Two-time national champion
Bobby Brown (Woolston) will
also feature and is certainly a
talent to keep an eye on.
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
The Sunday afternoon session
will showcase experienced youth
(17 to 18-year-olds) and senior
talent with the open section
finals scheduled.
Impressive youth Johnny
Kennard fighting out of the
Rangiora club will be looking to
keep his momentum going when
he takes on southpaw Pasoni
Taafaki from Waimate’s Taafaki
club.
The 2023 NZ lightweight
champion Joel Hill from
Woolston will be making the
step up to the light welterweight
division to fight Riverside’s
Thomas Hanford.
ONGOING roadworks are
continuing to put pressure on
Richmond businesses, with one
long
-running store deciding it is
time to leave.
After more than 20 years of
supplying fresh produce to the
eastern suburbs on Stanmore
Rd, The Green Grocer closed
it doors for the final time on
Friday.
The city council began a fu l
reconstruction of North Avon
Rd in January which has since
left businesses struggling to
bring customers into their stores.
The Green Grocer owner
Dianne Pratt said she didn’t
want to go, but because of the
roadworks the business has
suffered a “huge decline.”
“We are around 50 per cent
down each week and we can’t
sustain it. It is below break even
for us,” she said.
HOPE IS fading for people who
catch the bus between New
Environment Canterbury has
prepared an “alternative option”
in its draft Long Term Plan after
public opposed its original plan
to axe six of its lowest performing
bus routes.
But a new route combining the
135 Burwood Hospital and 150
The Palms bus routes is planned
to terminate at Taiora: QE II Recreation
and Sport Centre.
It means the 135 Burwood Hospital
route wi l no longer travel
into New Brighton.
Currently the bus service runs
from Prestons Rd through to Burwood
Hospital and along Beach
Rd to Marine Parade.
The proposed change has been
met with opposition. New Brighton
resident Hilary Wilson said
the planned route change would
be “terrible” as she always found
the bus convenient, particularly
when she had a knee replacement
at Burwood Hospital.
LINDA CHEN has a new
outlook on life after giving birth
to her first child, Sebastian.
The Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community Board
member and her husband Robin
welcomed the baby boy on April
10 in what she described a
“precious experience.”
“Having a child has
not only been a precious
experience for me, as
a woman, but it has
also changed the
way I see the world.
I now see the world
as a mother – the
agendas and issues
in our ward have
become a lot more
personal now.”
Sebastian is also
the first grandchild
of both sides of the
family, “so he is
getting a lot of love
and attention,” said
Mrs Chen.
The couple first
met while at primary school at
the former Kendal School in
Harewood.
“We are rea ly happy that we
have ended up settling back at
Harewood and that we wi l be
raising Sebastian here. Both
Robin and I have fond memories
growing up in this area,” she said.
Mrs Chen is the second
community board member to
welcome a child this term, with
“OVERWHELMING”
opposition has caused
Environment Canterbury to
re-think its proposed cuts to bus
ECan staff prepared an “alternative
option” to the proposal
in its draft Long Term Plan,
that would axe the six lowest
performing bus routes, affecting
110,000 passenger trips.
The new proposal wi l save
the 107 Styx Mi l to Northlands
while the 108 Casebrook to
Northlands wi l be absorbed
into an extended version of the
28 Papanui to Lyttelton service.
Papanui Ward city counci lor
Mike Davidson urged people to
submit on the plan, saying the
routes were an “essential social
service.”
He said while the new option
is “rea ly good news” for residents
in his ward, “other areas
haven’t been as fortunate, which
is a shame.”
ST ANNE’S Catholic School
produced an unconventional
cross-country event, using
an obstacle course which
involved ducking, diving and
getting muddy.
The Grit Cha lenge was
the idea of a parent who
works for a scaffolding
company and involved a
technical run including two
crossings, jumping a fence,
tunnels, poles, large barrels
and several mud-based
obstacles.
The pupils climbed up a
four-level scaffolding feature
and jumped off into matting.
Principal Da las Wichman
said the cha lenge was pu together
to promote the school’s
attitude of grit.
“To persist when things get
difficult and give things a go
which we know is a big determiner
of success in life.”
“The event was amazing
and brings so many
families rather than the
traditional ‘running around
the park’-style cross-country
which we know is dead
boring.”
He said the pupils loved the
course.
“They loved getting rea ly
high on the scaffolding obstacle
and dropping off onto our
high jump mat.”
PUBLIC OUTCRY has caused a
rethink over plans to cut bus routes
around the city.
But the 535 Eastgate to Lyttelton
and Rapaki sti l remains on the
chopping block.
Environment Canterbury staff
prepared an “alternative option” to
the proposal in its draft Long Term
Plan that would axe the six lowest
performing bus routes fo lowing
“overwhelming” public opposition,
a spokeswoman said.
Those routes included the 535
and the 145 Westmorland to
Eastgate.
The solution is a modification
of the six routes proposed to be
disestablished – with frequency
changes, the combining of two
routes, extension and re-routing of
others.
But as part of the proposal,
there would not be a service
through Ferrymead and Mt
Pleasant.
YALDHURST residents
wi l this week lodge an appeal
and prepare for a costly court
battle to cha lenge a decision to
a low quarry expansion in the
area.
The decision made by city
council and Environment
Canterbury appointed hearings
panel a lowed quarrying
company Road Metals to
increase their Yaldhurst
operations to 100m from
To lodge the appeal, the
residents formed a new
group named the Yaldhurst
Environment Group – Hau Ora
Inc.
Chairwoman Soraya Nicholas
said the appeal would cos the
group $100,000 and it received
support from various members
of the community.
“We’re probably looking
at mandatory mediation
happening in September and
potentia ly the Environment
Court appeal case wi l be very
late this year or early next year,”
Ms Nicholas said.
COCKLE NUMBERS in the
Avon-Heathcote Estuary are in
serious decline.
A six-month study shows the
population has fallen dramatically
since a 2012 survey, from
around 400 per sq m to between
50 and 80 per sq m in some
areas.
Biological sciences student
Stephanie Hampson has been researching
the extent and impact
of harvesting on the health and
sustainability of estuary shellfish
beds – an important feeding
grounds for birds.
The results suggest the current
limit of 150 cockles per person
per day is too high and needs to
be reduced or even a ban put in
place, Ms Hampson said.
Auckland’s limit is 50 per person
per day, which she believes
would be more appropriate if
harvesting is to continue.
DISTRICT council-owned
The three dwe lings are part of a
The houses are on the market
Former mayor Bi l Woods says
he is concerned that money from
the sales wi l not go back into
Malvern community.
In the early 2000s Mr Woods
and late district counci lor Paul
Stewart was involved in putting a
case forward that if the properties
were sold the money had to go
back into the community.
“In fairness, the money gained
must be returned to the area from
A CON man who tells his
intended victims he will harm
their families if they don’t pay up
may face a bigger problem than
the law – gangs.
Police have received 19 complaints
from Christchurch people
targeted by the sinister scam. It
involves phone
calls and texts to
victims who are
told the caller is
from the Mongrel
Mob, Highway 61
or Black Power.
Pay up or your
family members,
including elderly
parents, will be
attacked, the caller says.
But it appears the con man is
not connected to the gangs, just
using their names to put fear into
the intended victims.
Canterbury University criminologist
Greg Newbold said yesterday
the gangs would be “filthy”.
“All I can say is he’s got a death
wish,” he said.
“They will be absolutely p***ed
off. Anybody who impersonates
a gang member is committing a
serious crime against the gang.”
Prof Newbold said the perpetrator
could get a “hiding” for that
alone.
ONGOING roadworks are
continuing to put pressure on
Richmond businesses, with one
long
time to leave.
After more than 20 years of
supplying fresh produce to the
it doors for the final time on
Friday.
The city council began a fu l
reconstruction of North Avon
Rd in January which has since
left businesses struggling to
bring customers into their stores.
The Green Grocer owner
Dianne Pratt said she didn’t
wan to go, but because of the
roadworks the business has
suffered a “huge decline.”
“We are around 50 per cent
down each week and we can’t
sustain it. It is below break even
for us,” she said.
HOPE IS fading for people who
Environment Canterbury has
prepared an “alternative option”
But a new route combining the
The Palms bus routes is planned
to terminate at Taiora: QE II Recreation
and Sport Centre.
It means the 135 Burwood Hospital
route wi l no longer travel
into New Brighton.
Currently the bus service runs
from Prestons Rd through to Burwood
Hospital and along Beach
The proposed change has been
met with opposition. New Brighton
resident Hilary Wilson said
the planned route change would
be “terrible” as she always found
the bus convenient, particularly
“OVERWHELMING”
opposition has caused
Environment Canterbury to
re-think its proposed cuts to bus
routes in the city.
ECan staff prepared an “alternative
option” to the proposal
in its draft Long Term Plan,
that would axe the six lowest
performing bus routes, affecting
110,000 passenger trips.
The new proposal wi l save
the 107 Styx Mi l to Northlands
while the 108 Casebrook to
Northlands will be absorbed
into an extended version of the
Papanui Ward city counci lor
Mike Davidson urged people to
submit on the plan, saying the
routes were an “essential social
service.”
He said while the new option
is “rea ly good news” for residents
in his ward, “other areas
haven’t been as fortunate, which
ST ANNE’S Catholic School
produced an unconventional
cross-country event, using
an obstacle course which
involved ducking, diving and
getting muddy.
The Grit Cha lenge was
the idea of a parent who
works for a scaffolding
company and involved a
technical run including two
crossings, jumping a fence,
tunnels, poles, large barrels
and several mud-based
obstacles.
The pupils climbed up a
four-level scaffolding feature
and jumped off into matting.
Principal Dallas Wichman
said the challenge was pu together
to promote the school’s
attitude of grit.
“To persist when things get
difficult and give things a go
which we know is a big determiner
of success in life.”
“The event was amazing
and brings so many
families rather than the
traditional ‘running around
the park’-style cross-country
which we know is dead
boring.”
He said the pupils loved the
course.
“They loved getting rea ly
high on the scaffolding obstacle
and dropping off onto our
high jump mat.”
PUBLIC OUTCRY has caused a
rethink over plans to cut bus routes
around the city.
Bu the 535 Eastgate to Lyttelton
and Rapaki sti l remains on the
chopping block.
Environment Canterbury staff
prepared an “alternative option” to
the proposal in its draft Long Term
Plan that would axe the six lowest
performing bus routes fo lowing
“overwhelming” public opposition,
a spokeswoman said.
Those routes included the 535
and the 145 Westmorland to
Eastgate.
The solution is a modification
of the six routes proposed to be
disestablished – with frequency
changes, the combining of two
routes, extension and re-routing of
others.
But as part of the proposal,
there would not be a service
trave ling down Linwood Ave,
through Ferrymead and Mt
Pleasant.
outlook on life after giving birth
to her first child, Sebastian.
The Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community Board
member and her husband Robin
welcomed the baby boy on April
10 in what she described a
“precious experience.”
“Having a child has not
only been a precious
experience for me,
as a woman, but it
has also changed the
way I see the world.
I now see the world
as a mother – the
agendas and issues
in our ward have
become a lot more
personal now.”
Sebastian is also
the first grandchild
of both sides of the
family, “so he is
getting a lot of love
and attention,” said
Mrs Chen.
The couple first
met while at primary school at
the former Kendal School in
Harewood.
“We are rea ly happy that we
have ended up settling back at
Harewood and that we wi l be
raising Sebastian here. Both
Robin and I have fond memories
growing up in this area,” she said.
YALDHURST residents
wi l this week lodge an appeal
and prepare for a costly court
battle to cha lenge a decision to
a low quarry expansion in the
area.
The decision made by city
council and Environment
Canterbury appointed hearings
panel allowed quarrying
company Road Metals to
increase their Yaldhurst
operations to 100m from
To lodge the appeal, the
residents formed a new
group named the Yaldhurst
Environment Group – Hau Ora
Inc.
Chairwoman Soraya Nicholas
said the appeal would cos the
group $100,000 and it received
support from various members
of the community.
“We’re probably looking
at mandatory mediation
happening in September and
potentia ly the Environment
Court appeal case wi l be very
late this year or early next year,”
Ms Nicholas said.
COCKLE NUMBERS in the
Avon-Heathcote Estuary are in
serious decline.
A six-month study shows the
population has fallen dramatically
since a 2012 survey, from
around 400 per sq m to between
50 and 80 per sq m in some
areas.
Biological sciences student
Stephanie Hampson has been researching
the extent and impact
of harvesting on the health and
sustainability of estuary shellfish
beds – an important feeding
grounds for birds.
The results suggest the current
limit of 150 cockles per person
per day is too high and needs to
be reduced or even a ban put in
place, Ms Hampson said.
Auckland’s limit is 50 per person
per day, which she believes
would be more appropriate if
harvesting is to continue.
The houses are on the market
A CON man who tells his
intended victims he will harm
their families if they don’t pay up
may face a bigger problem than
the law – gangs.
Police have received 19 complaints
from Christchurch people
targeted by the sinister scam. It
involves phone
calls and texts to
victims who are
told the caller is
from the Mongrel
Mob, Highway 61
or Black Power.
Pay up or your
family members,
including elderly
parents, will be
attacked, the caller says.
But it appears the con man is
not connected to the gangs, just
using their names to put fear into
the intended victims.
Canterbury University criminologist
Greg Newbold said yesterday
the gangs would be “filthy”.
“All I can say is he’s got a death
wish,” he said.
“They will be absolutely p***ed
off. Anybody who impersonates
a gang member is committing a
serious crime against the gang.”
Prof Newbold said the perpetrator
could get a “hiding” for that
alone.
Up and coming local
artists on display
IT started two years ago as a thought...
could Ferrymead Rotary run an art show
to highlight the work of local artists? A
show to bring value to the community, and
possibly pay for itself as well? Absolutely!
e 2022 Ferrymead Rotary Art Show
featuring award winning painter Colin
Maclaren was a tremendous success, so
successful Rotary is about to do it all again.
"With New World on board as the
naming rights sponsor, our Club is pleased
to conrm we are holding our 2024 Art
Show this weekend, Friday 7th and
Saturday 8th June in conjunction with the
Ilam School of ne Arts," said Bob ayer,
Art Show committee. "We're keen on
supporting youth in the community as up
and coming artists and it gives the public
an opportunity to buy works at a
reasonable price."
e Ilam School of Fine Arts at the
University of Canterbury was founded in
1882 as the Canterbury College School of
Art. e Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in
visual arts and design subjects was
introduced in 1982. e ability to specialise
in one of the ve disciplines - design, lm,
painting, photography and sculpture - is
unique within New Zealand.
Taking place across two days at the Mt
Pleasant Community Centre, the Show
launches on Friday 7th June with an
Auction of donated art works and items
donated by local businesses including a late
entry by Colin Maclaren. e exhibition of
works are also available for purchase. e
exhibition continues on Saturday from
9am to 4pm. Payment for works can be
made by cash or card. Credit card incurs a
2% surcharge.
"e opening night auction will feature
works donated by feature artists Kathrine
Mateer, Rae Manson, Linda Burns, Jackie
Hancock, Tricia Hewlett, Jane Downes,
Lynette Colton and Emily Quane," said
Bob. "Our featured artists are nal year
students from the Ilam School of Fine
Arts, completing their degrees. is is a
great association for our Club given our
strong focus and support of youth and we
are excited to have them on board. Local
businesses have also generously donated
auction lots. e latest being a chainsaw by
the Ferrymead STIHL Shop".
Entrance for the Friday night session is
$20 which includes drinks and nibbles
with the auction at 7pm.
e Rotary club of Ferrymead has been
assisting the local community since 1993,
by raising funds from various sources and
channelling the proceeds back into the
community.
Funds raised from the 2024 Art Show
will assist in allowing Ferrymead Rotary
Club to undertake various projects for the
good of the local community. Recent such
works have included providing nancial
assistance to Te Aratai for their “Positive
Hauora and Resilience Programme”,
supporting young adults to attend Rotary
Young Leader Awards, supporting high
school students to attend the National
Science and Technology Forum, providing
teaching materials for the House of Science
educational programme, providing meals
for families at Ronald McDonald House,
and providing funds to assist the Estuary
Fest.
To be able to undertake these and other
projects, the Rotary Club sources funds
from the community and benefactors
(such as the Art Show sponsors), with all
funds channelled back into the community.
e Club looks forward to being able to
continue undertaking this work now and
into the future.
THURSDAY, MAY 30, 2024
A REST home has created a
special fruitcake to celebrate the
royal birthday on Monday.
For King Charles III’s birthday,
Arvida Rhodes on Cashmere’s
cook Margaret Hogan enlisted
resident Thea Artz to help create
a fruitcake fit for a king – and all
for a very good cause.
The king is a well-known fan
o fruitcake – he chose one for
his 1981 wedding to the late
Princess Diana, and then again
when he married Queen Camilla
in 2005, as well as at his coronation
celebration last year – and
She used a recipe belonging to
a residen that had been passed
down for generations and had
kitchen by keen royalist Thea,
who has a passion for baking and
keeps up-to-date with royal news
– something she’s done for years.
Charles is a well-known
fruitcake fan – it was served
at both his weddings and at
been a brave man, going out and
working after his recent cancer
diagnosis.
“I wish (him) the happiest of
birthdays and very good health
for the year ahead.”
In a sweet move, the kindhearted
staff and residents a the
rest home resisted the urge to
tuck into the cake and have instead
decided to deliver i to the
local Cancer Society office for
the hard-working team to enjoy.
“It’s a cause that’s close to
