St Martins teen’s Robin Hood role

MEET THE new face of one of
medieval’s most timeless English
tales.
Sophia Benter-Lynch, of St
Martins, will put a feminine
twist on the legend of Robin
Hood, playing the heroic outlaw
herself.
Having just left Cashmere
High School, it will be the first
major role of the aspiring performer’s
career.
The Riccarton House grounds
will transform into Sherwood
Forest as the tale of Robin Hood
and her adventures is brought to
the city.
The new adaption was created
by director Daniel Pengelly
for the city council’s Anthony
Harper Summer Theatre production.
While the classic characters
such as the infamous
Sheriff
of Nottingham
and Robin
Hood’s love interest
Lady Marian
will still appear
in the show, audiences
can expect
to see several makeovers.

switched so roles such as Marian
is played by a man.

jockey sort of guy with a few
insecurities.
He said the show was inspired
by 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince
of Thieves starring Alan Rickman
and Kevin Costner.
Other significant characters
are Carrie Green as the Sheriff of
Nottingham and Millie Hanford
as Friar Tuck.
Benter-Lynch said it is an
empowering play for familiesespecially
those who take their
daughters to the show.
“Even though Robin Hood is
a young woman she is still great
at leading this army. People actually
follow her and it is a great
message to the youth of today,”
she said.
Benter-Lynch’s interest in
acting was first ignited when
she became obsessed with the
film The Sound of Music at eightyears-old.
“I was like they are on stage
they having so much fun singing
and dancing and it is just like
isn’t this just a dream job to be
able to have fun for the rest of
your life,” she said.
Since then she has worked
with The Court Youth Company,
performed in high school productions
and competed in the
Stage Challenge.
Robin Hood will run from
February 1 to 19.
