Described by general manager Paul Inwood as a “community
within a community”, the Hornby Workingmen’s Club offers a
wealth of facilities and activities for its members to enjoy, right
in the heart of Hornby.
Established more than 60 years ago, the club currently has
8000 members, who come not just from the Hornby area but
also from all around Canterbury, and cover a wide range of age
groups and interests, Paul says.
Among the club’s facilities are several popular dining and bar
areas. These include the Club Café, which is open seven days a
week for lunch and dinner, and the Chalmers Restaurant, which
provides both buffet and à la carte dining on Friday, Saturday
and Sunday nights, and has recently introduced Sunday lunch,
available from 12pm-2pm.
The main bar has several TV screens, including a big screen,

All Clubs NZ and Clubs Australia affiliated members (and their bonafide guests) are welcome
so members can enjoy watching the big games and cheering
the home team on as they enjoy a night out with their friends.
The club’s shuttle service offers a pick-up and drop-off service
seven days a week.
Live music at the weekend from a variety of visiting musicians
and groups provides great entertainment for members. The
wide-ranging sport and recreation pursuits available include
billiards, snooker and pool, cards, darts, table tennis, indoor and
outdoor bowls, cricket, fishing, and travel, all of which are run
as separate clubs with members welcome to join as many as
they like.
There are 18 gaming machines and a TAB onsite.
“We also offer excellent conference and function facilities,
which members can hire for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries,

Originally a social outlet for workers and their families, the
workingmen’s club of today has a much broader reach, Paul
says.
“The founders of the Hornby Workingmen’s Club had a great
vision to keep it relevant for all generations, and today people
of all ages, from young families to retired people, and from a
wide range of backgrounds, enjoy the many benefits of belonging
to our club.”
Members from other New Zealand clubs, and from overseas,
are welcome to enjoy the facilities at the Hornby Workingmen’s
Club. For people wanting to join, it can be done on the
spot, and costs just $34 a year.
