STRONG COFFEE:
Riccarton’s Sam Laurie was
RICCARTON barista Sam
Laurie makes between
400-500 coffees a day, so it
is no wonder he can make a
good brew.
In fact, his coffees are
so good he was named
best barista at the
Columbus Coffee National
Championship in Auckland
recently.
Mr Laurie said it was a
huge achievement and he
had been working hard to
perfect his coffee since he
started at Columbus Coffee
Riccarton about three years
ago.
The 25-year-old started out
as a barista at the Honeypot
Cafe on Colombo St when
it re-opened after the
earthquakes in 2013.
“It wasn’t until I started
at Columbus Coffee that I
started nailing my passion,”
he said.
He never was much of
a coffee-drinker in high
school but now his favourite
coffee to make is a shortblack
because it is “the closest
flavour to coffee you can get.”
HILLMORTON HIGH School’s
principal does not support a
proposal to remove its intermediate
students to form a new school in
Halswell.
Principal Ann Brokenshire said
Hillmorton High has a strong middle
school culture and she would
be “reluctant” to see it move to a
campus in Halswell.
The comments come after the
Ministry of Education put out
12 options for the future of
Halswell schooling due to a
predicted population explosion in
the future.
The survey asked participants if
they would like to see Hillmorton
High become a year 11-13 school
only.
But Ms Brokenshire said the advantage
of having a middle school
and high school on the same site is
huge.
She said advantages included
working with specialist teachers
and talented students could be put
up a level.
“If you are running two sites, it
would be really difficult to do that
in a seamless way,” she said.
The other options include establishing
a new year 1-6 primary
school, a year 1-8 primary school
or a new year 7-10 intermediate in
northern Halswell.
The survey closes on Friday.
Last month, Western News
reported the MoE confirmed
land on Tongariro St will be the
location for a new $15 million
school.
Noisy buses irk residents
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
RESIDENTS LIVING on a
quiet Halswell street say they
will not put up with noisy buses
on a permanent basis.
Graycliffe St residents are
frustrated, saying Environment
Canterbury gave them the
impression a bus route going
through their street would only
ever be temporary.
But consultation on the route
staying put, closes on Friday.
The current Orange Line bus
service travels through Patterson
Tce, Halswell Junction
Rd, Hamill Rd, Graycliffe St,
Murphys Rd and Caulfield Ave.
Resident Helen Smith said
buses travel past her house from
about 5.30am to midnight every
day with about three to four
buses at peak times travelling in
convoy.
“The noise is unbelievable. It
is horrendous and our bedroom
is at the front of the house so we
hear everything all night,” she
said.
Residents on Graycliffe St and
Murphys Rd have been putting
up with the temporary bus
route for about two years after it
was set up in 2014.
A consultation is under way
STRUGGLE: Because the roads on Caulfield Ave and Hamill
Rd are designed to slow traffic, buses have difficulty turning
the corner.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
with ECan to extend a bus route
through the subdivisions of
Longhurst and Knights Stream
to increase patronage numbers.
But the consultation is also
because buses cannot turn
properly on the corner of
Hamill Rd and Caulfield Ave,
which is a retail area.
The roads around the retail
area were designed to slow
traffic to provide safe access for
pedestrians.
Environment Canterbury
public transport manager David
Stenhouse said the city council
had a strong preference that the
intersection at Hamill Rd and
Caulfield Ave is pedestrianfriendly.
He said there is also a high
density residential dwelling on
the south side of Hamill Rd and
the area south of Murphys Rd
is zoned for further residential
development.
Originally the buses were
planned to go along Hamill Rd
onto Caulfield Ave and Richmond
Ave.
A meeting was held between
about 30 residents, Mr Stenhouse
and city council representatives
last Tuesday.
In July, Greycliffe St residents
received a letter from Mr
Stenhouse saying the temporary
route was intended to be shifted
onto a different route.
“At no stage did he even alert
to the fact Graycliffe St was going
to become an option,” Mrs
Smith said.
In 2014, a temporary route
was created for the Orange Line
because roads in the subdivision
were not completed.
Halswell Residents’ Association
member Ross McFarlane
said they were disappointed a
new subdivision has been built
and a bus can’t turn a corner to
go into the commercial area.
“That is just poor planning,”
he said.
In Brief
QUARRY CAFE IDEA
The city council will test the
market to see if anyone is
interested in setting up a café
in Halswell Quarry Park. On
Thursday the city council decided
to put out for tender the running
of a cafe at the park to gauge
interest. The cafe will be near
the historic Singleman’s House.
Deputy mayor Vicki Buck said
the city council will most likely
look at a temporary solution
for the summer. She said they
will then look at a longer term
solution which may involve a
new building. Meanwhile, the
city council has decided against
turning Mona Vale’s gatehouse
into a cafe at the same meeting.
The gatehouse has been closed
since the earthquakes. City
council staff will work with the
Fendalton-Waimari ward to
decide on the future use of the
gatehouse.
WASTEWATER REPAIRS
Work began yesterday to repair
the earthquake-damaged
wastewater system on Fendalton
Rd and the wider area. As part
of this work they will carry out
a patch repair to the wastewater
main and clean out a stretch of
pipe between Fendalton Rd and
Desmond St. The work will be
completed on October 10.
Unfortunately, we just can’t
know it all and that is why
having veterinarians with extra
qualifications in a field ( who are
only to willing to offer help and
advice), is of enormous value
when we are faced with a difficult,
challenging cases.
McMaster & Heap
Veterinary practice
REFERRAL VETERINARY SERVICES
Recently I referred a 7 year old
English Springer Spaniel to an
orthopaedic surgeon at VSA in
Auckland for spinal surgery. I have
had personal experience with the
team at VSA and great results in the
past. Dusty is a patient we have seen
a lot of recently. He was recently
neutered and treated for an enlarged
prostate and more recently I have
examined and treated Dusty for what we believed
to be unrelenting lower back pain.
Dusty is the perfect patient, amenable to a lot of
manipulation and palpation, although he now
often freezes and drops when he sees me coming.
Previously Dusty has had CT scans, radiographs
and blood testing to try to understand why at
times he seems crippled with pain. He is unable to
run with other dogs, play vigorously, jump, swim
for long periods of time – in other words, “just be a
dog”. His onset of pain
is quick and he wears
his pain on his little
face. We have treated
Dusty with numerous
types of pain and
inflammation
modifying drugs
with no real
success, as well as
physiotherapy and
hydrotherapy.
Dusty’s owner
and I discussed in depth our next step
which had to be an MRI at St Georges Hospital
to determine whether Dusty was a surgical
candidate or not. Dusty’s owner is a nurse herself
and fully understands an accurate diagnosis is
crucial if we are to understand Dusty’s pain better
and do the best for him. Luckily it also helps to
have pet insurance, as MRI diagnostics and spinal
surgery are right up there in cost for the average
client. Dusty may make the move to the UK soon,
so I wanted to make real sure we were doing all
we could for him.
The staff at St Georges are helpful, knowledgable
and lovely with our canine patients. I regularly
travel with patients to sedate and monitor them
for their MRI which can
take up to an hour. It isn’t
painful but they have to
lie
very still in order for the
radiologist to get good
pictures. Ear plugs are
inserted as the machinery
is very noisy.
In Dusty’s case, even I
could see the cause of
his severe pain. He had a
severe disc prolapse and
soft tissue hypertrophy at
the lumbosacral junction
( L7-S1) causing spinal
cord compression. His
L6-L7 disc space was also
moderately prolapsed.
The radiologist also
noted a congenital
abnormality of his aorta, an
incidental finding.
The surgeon in Auckland had access to this
MRI and could read the images. He concluded
that Dusty would benefit from spinal cord
decompression and stabilisation of the
lumbosacral disc space, which would allow Dusty
a far better quality of life.
The surgeon liased with Dusty’s owner
immediately and within weeks Dusty was flown
to Auckland for a referral consultation, operated
on successfully and is now
rehabilitating in Auckland post
operatively for 6 weeks, until the
follow up xrays show that there is
bony healing and stability of the
plates and screws. Dusty is also
receiving physiotherapy to help with
a quicker recovery.
A real success story for Dusty and his
family and it just goes to show that
the best veterinary medicine is often
a collaborative team effort, where our
primary objective is to successfully
cure, heal and care for our patients.
At McMaster & Heap we are also extremely lucky
to have the expertise and knowledge of Steve
Heap, in diagnosing and treating patients with Eye
diseases and Catherine Morganti, who regularly
preforms ultrasounds and endoscopy on cats
and dogs, allowing us more diagnostic options
to working up a sick patient. We also employ a
registered veterinary dentist, when required, to
perform root canal surgeries and pulpotomies on
teeth, when clients would rather save their dogs
teeth than us perform extractions.
Steve’s caseload at McMaster & Heap would be
80% eye referral work and much of this ends up
being operated on. Steve also
travels to Dunedin every 3 months
for 2 jammed packed days of eye
referral work and surgery. These
vets have invested time to develop
certain skills, knowledge and
expertise in a specialised area of
veterinary medicine and are of huge
help to us primary vets in providing
solutions and treatments with our
patients. We find our clients want
the best for their pets ( as we do) and
welcome referral vet services.
Call for car parking charges
• By Andrew King
A CYCLING group says Jellie
Park Recreation and Sports
Centre users who drive to the
facility should be charged for
parking.
Spokes Canterbury chairman
Don Babe said instead of the
city council’s proposal to offer
free gear, food or discount cards
if people travelled by cycle or
charge for car parking.
The Fendalton-Waimairi
Community Board decided
in May to form a committee,
chaired by board member
Bridget Williams, to gather ideas
around how to encourage people
to leave the car at home.
The survey is open now and
will run for the next three weeks
at Jellie Park.
The idea came about because
there was not enough parking at
the facility during summer.
Between December 2015 and
March 2016, 238,024 people
used the facilities, the park has
114 car parks available.
Among the idea was to offer
discount cards, give out towels
or free food as a reward to those
who cycled or used the bus.
But Mr Babe said the community
board has got it wrong.
He said it would be difficult to
alternative transport.
police who had actually cycled
and who had just taken a helmet
along to get a discount.
He said the idea should be
flipped on its head and for car
parking to be charged instead.
“Let us discourage the use of
cars to get to a sports facility if
people live close,” he said.
Once the committee has gathered
those idea it will use the
best one in a trial in November.
Miss Williams said it would
be better to encourage cycling
or public transport rather than
charge for parking.
“It is one way of controlling
parking issues, however, I feel
that encouraging cycling provides
a benefit to the environment,
the person and relieves
parking issues,” she said.
Extending the car park was rejected
by a city council committee
in May after overwhelming
public response to the consultation.
“The hope is to free up car
parks, create healthy habits and
make sure there is community
involvement,” Miss Williams said.
Currently, it costs adults $5.80
to use the pool, while children
under 16 pay $3.10.
Quarries
appeal
restrictions
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
and Tom Doudney
TWO QUARRY operators have
lodged an appeal after they were
denied an application to dig
deeper into the ground.
In August, an application
by nine quarries, called the
Canterbury Aggregate Producers
Group, asked to be granted
permission to quarry up to 4m
below the highest recorded
groundwater level.
It was rejected by an
independent hearings panel
last month. Two of those –
Selwyn Quarries, now owned by
Winstone Aggregates, and Isaac
Construction Ltd – are appealing
that decision to the Environment
Court. About 500 out of 600
submissions had opposed the
application and all submitters
were notified of the appeal on
Friday.
Residents were concerned the
possibility of deeper quarrying
could contaminate groundwater.
This was a key reason why the
application was declined.
The Selwyn Quarries operation
is at 58 Selwyn Rd in Broadfield,
while the Isaac Construction
Ltd quarry is on McArthurs Rd,
Mcleans Island near the airport.
Library, sports centre options
In the lead-up to the local body elections, Western News is asking city council
candidates their views on topical issues within the community. This week we
ask Hornby Ward candidates what their preferred location is for the Hornby
Library and South West Recreation and Sports Centre, and whether they think
it should go into Denton Park, which is home to numerous sports clubs.
Sara Harnett
Kikstra:
Independent
Difficult question
to answer without
first knowing what
the options are,
feasibility studies
of different locations,
the opinions
of local residents and the local cricket
and football club. Denton Park, in terms
of traffic, is already quite congested.
Kyle Park, which is next to Hornby High
School, may be an option, although I
understand it may have been an old land
fill and remediation may be costly. The
new Riccarton Library is sited on school
land and appears to be a successful partnership,
which could be an option with
Hornby High School. Hornby now has a
plethora of industrial land and exhausted
quarry pits on its boundary, which could
be used without encroaching on its limited
green space. This could be linked to
local parks with a walkway. Ultimately,
Hornby is long, long overdue for these
kind of facilities.
Jimmy Chen:
The People’s
Choice
A site for the new
Hornby Library
and the South
West Recreation
and Sports Centre
is still under active
consideration by
the council, including Denton Park. An
option to co-locate these facilities on a
single site is a part of this work. Before
making a decision, the city council will
be undertaking consultation with the
community on a possible site(s). Feedback
received from that consultation is
important in helping to inform the city
council’s site(s) decision.
Manjit Singh:
Independent
During my campaign,
I found
out that Denton
Park and the
area around it
seems to be the
choice of the
community. I
believe easy access to transport and
the shopping mall is another reason.
Also, there is no reason why sports
facilities can’t be accommodated in
the same place. Denton Park is closer
to the hearts of many in the community
so having all the facilities in
one place might be the answer to the
needs of our community.
Elections 16
Tane Apanui
Kyle Park. As well as being
central to The Hub Hornby
and Hornby High School, it’s
located next to the railway
line where the train station
will be under my plan for
public transport. The land
needs to be remediated – let’s
do that instead of leaving a
possible hazard in the future. Denton Park has a
nice open inviting feel as it is.
Improving safety
in Riccarton
In the lead-up to the local body elections, Western News is asking
city council candidates and community board members for their
views on topical issues within the community. This week we ask
Riccarton Ward candidates what they think needs to be done
about the anit-social issues at northern and southern Riccarton bus
lounges:
Catherine Chu:
Independent
Citizens
The Riccarton Rd bus
lounges were opened
with good intentions.
A warm, safe
environment to facilitate people
waiting for their transport. However,
regardless of how much of a
good intent anything has, no doubt
it will easily turn into custard if it
is poorly managed. That is what’s
happening to our bus lounges.
It’s now affecting the safety of our
people and our local businesses.
What needs to be implemented is
simple – higher security, stricter
rules and better management. It’s
time we listen to our residents and
put a solution in place to restore its
reputation.
Ross Carter-Brown: Independent
I spoke to users of the bus lounges last
week regarding the recent violence and
anti-social behaviour. Many people
don’t feel safe using the lounge, or
even being near it. The core group of
trouble-makers are coming in from
outside Riccarton and are using the lounges for the
free Wi-Fi. That part of Riccarton Rd has always
been a hub for buses, the only thing that has changed
is the arrival of the bus lounges with Wi-Fi. Get rid
of the Wi-Fi and they should stop coming. Also,
many lounge-users feel that the current security contractors
are not proactive and are ineffectual, so the
contract needs to be reviewed. Metro Christchurch,
Westfield Riccarton and the surrounding businesses
should meet regularly to co-ordinate efforts to stop
the anti-social behaviour. Another method would be
to collectively trespass repeat offenders from all the
sites/businesses involved and have open communication
between security at the mall and bus lounges,
as well as police. If we all work together we can get
on top of this problem.
Helen Broughton: Independent Citizens
Time for stronger action – an on going police presence for this
site and potentially the Riccarton business district. The behaviour,
while disappointing, is predictable. City council experienced
similar difficulties around the pre-earthquake city bus exchange.
Riccarton residents and businesses raised concerns during consultation,
but little attention was given to these concerns. The behaviour
is not at the bus exchange and requires police intervention. City council
installed security guards who cannot intervene with on-street behaviour. The
young people concerned are not bus-users. Following a public meeting in February,
the city council adopted the soft approach – youth advocates working with
the young people. This has not worked – we need a stronger police presence and
enforcement.
Clive Waliyaparambil
Antony: Your Fresh
Voice for Riccarton
After speaking to local
business owners around the
bus exchange, I am told that
some fear for the safety of
their employees and also theft has increased.
Anti-social behaviour can be a
result of a lack of outlets for young people
to focus their energy. A dedicated space
for youth could be a good start. A space
that includes, hot desks, free-Wi-Fi to
encourage collaboration, but also exercise
facilities like kick-boxing to cater for
the athletic in nature. A similar project is
currently underway in Takapuna, Auckland,
via the local board and youth council
called Younite.
Luke Chandler:
Best for
Riccarton
Working with local
businesses to ensure
this anti-social
behaviour is being
reported. It’s also imperative we
ensure we bolster police patrols
of this area. It is an unfortunate
result that the 99 per cent of us
are getting it right, but it’s the one
per cent that are letting us down.
We need to call on parents to
ensure they are aware of where
their children are in the evening,
as the majority of anti social
behaviour seems to be a result of
our youth.
Antony Harrison – I’m very
happy that Red Café will take
over the Te Hapua Halswell Centre.
I’ve been a customer of Red
Café at Upper Riccarton Library
for nine years now. They are lovely
people and always welcome me
with a smile. Their coffee is very
nice and their food is fantastic.
The Te Hapua: Halswell Centre is
a short straight drive from work
so I’ll be there.
Gary Knight – The Wellington-based
Wishbone cafe leasing
the Te Hapua: Halswell Centre
in Halswell was reflective of the
blasé attitude of the city council
by not retaining local business
entities to run these ventures.
The hallmark of any community
should be to engage through
retail or lease options only local
personnel for business opportunities
inclusive of cafes to retain the
inherent spirit of that community.
It is encouraging to note the preferred
option of Red Cafe was the
main contender to run and operate
the Te Hapua:Halswell Centre
cafe. Having cafes in Upper Riccarton
and South Christchurch
library bears testimony to the
integrity and diversity of this
local business operator. The city
they have just had a gutsful of
the problem. People can only
take so much and councillors
just need to be careful.
If caught in the act, crush the
dark, frightened of being seen.
Shelley Daly – The issue
was they put speed bumps along
Brynley St, absolutely overkill.
Now Oakhampton St is used as
a bypass. I’ve seen trucks take
knocking signs over.
Kevin Garty – Speed bumps
FLAME FILES
Minimise the risk if
you have bad habits
• By Mark Thomas – Fire Risk
Management Officer
THIS WEEK saw a couple of
fires in commercial buildings
which is a little unusual, while
not surprising.
One of the them, the fire at
Tait Electronics in Harewood
last Friday night, ended up as a
fourth alarm which means eight
fire trucks, an aerial appliance
and a command unit.
While we sometimes read
about Auckland’s ability to
respond dozens of trucks to a
single incident sending those
eight fire appliances is quite
unusual in a city of our size.
It means fewer trucks left
to attend other incidents and
explains why Lyttelton’s crew
had to travel through the tunnel
to put out a couch fire in
Woolston.
The other commercial fire was
in Magdala Place in Middleton
on Monday evening which attracted
four fire trucks and the
command unit.
The Fire Service’s Region 4
covers all of the South Island
down to the Waitaki River. The
last couple of years has seen us
experiencing more than our
share of fatal fires.
While none of them are identical
there seems to be a group
of people more at risk than
others.
Being older, having restricted
ability to move, drinking alcohol
and smoking all appears to
heighten the likelihood of death
by fire.
It’s not a nice way to go for
the victim or the loved ones
remaining. I qualify in some of
those categories so I try to indulge
my bad habits in the safest
way I can.
I have smoke alarms and
Wigram tyre
specialists now
easier to reach
For more than 10 years, Flags Tyres
in Wigram has been providing not only
tyres, but also brake and shock absorber
fitting and repairs for customers across the
Wigram/Hornby area.
Now, thanks to the recently opened
extension to Vickerys Road, the business is
much more accessible and is the closest tyre
shop for the thousands of residents in the
rapidly expanding Halswell area and the
new Wigram Skies sub-division.
“We are excited to have the opportunity
to do business with people living in these
new residential areas, and are very pleased
that the new infrastructure means we can
be reached in just a minute or so’s drive
from the Wigram Skies shopping mall,” says
business owner Dougal.
Located on the corner of Pilkington Way
and Hayton Road, right on the doorstep of
the Wigram Business Hub, Flags Tyres has
over 2000 tyres in stock, ranging from high
performance tyres to quality new and used
tyres for personal vehicles. They can provide
tyres for most vehicles most of the time and
at competitive prices, Dougal says, while the
modern workshop’s equipment includes a
state-of the-art wheel alignment machine.
Manager Ted Cholmondley heads a team
of fully trained, friendly staff, who provide
everything from WOFs and oil changes
through to brake repairs and shock absorber
replacement for all types of vehicle.
“It starts with WOF, we do a lot of those,
and we take it from there depending on
what’s required,” Dougal says.
One of their specialties is WOFs for
trailers, with the large parking area making
it easy for trailers to be moved around and
tested.
As well as enjoying the friendly,
helpful service from Ted and his team,
customers have the benefit of a comfortable
waiting room with a separate customer
toilet. And for work that will take longer,
there are courtesy cars available.
Anyone who wants a fair deal and to be
looked after with courtesy and a friendly
word need go no further than Flags Tyres,
corner Pilkington Way and Hayton Road.
They are open Monday to Friday 8am-
A hearing therapist can
help combat hearing loss
Bernadette Collins is trained to help
people make the most of the hearing
they have.
The qualified and highly experienced
therapist provides clinics at Rangiora,
Hornby and Lincoln as well as the
central-city clinic at 79 Bealey Avenue.
LIFE Unlimited is a charitable trust
based in Hamilton They have the
contract with the Ministry of Health
to provide hearing therapy services
throughout New Zealand to people 16
and over.
“We allow an hour for each
appointment and therefore we really
have time to listen to the problems you
are having and work through them to
find appropriate solutions,” Bernadette
says.
Many people think having hearing
aids will “fix” the problem. It is an aid
and will improve things greatly but the
use of communication strategies by
both the speaker and the listener are
still needed.
Bernadette Collins
“We cannot hear harder,” is what
Bernadette often tells people.“We are
not like an athlete training to run
faster.”
Hearing loss often causes
communication problems with people’s
family and friends. As hearing loss is an
invisible handicap, people often forget
an individual has a hearing loss.
The sad thing is that hearing loss
doesn’t just damage someone’s hearing,
it damages their confidence as well,
Bernadette says.
“ It is hard to face new situations
when you are struggling to hear. We
are able to offer clients six one-hour
sessions to improve communication
– this can be as an individual or a
couple.”
Group sessions are also available
using a very successful Australian
programme.
“Hearing loss makes one feel
disempowered – this is happening to
me without permission and I don’t
know how bad it will get,” Bernadette
says.
However, as she explains,
learning skills like speech reading is
empowering because you are learning
something that you can do to greatly
improve your situation and take control
again.
“This is a part of my job that I
really enjoy. As I am helping people
to develop the skills to improve their
confidence and quality of life.
“Another very satisfying aspect of
my job is helping people get funding for
hearing aids. Don’t think, ‘There is no
use having a hearing test because I can’t
afford hearing aids’,” Bernadette says. “I
have the contacts to help with this.”
She adds: “Don’t
suffer alone all it
will take is your
time. Call 0800
008 011 to make
an appointment
now!”
A nationwide retirement village
operator has officially opened a
centre in Wigram.
Summerset Retirement Village
held an opening celebration last
week,
The new facility includes a
swimming pool, bowling green,
gym and cafe.
The facilities are perfect for
keeping 74-year-old masters athlete
Justine Whitaker in shape.
She will compete in the World
Masters Athletics Championships
in Perth next month.
Justine will take part in the
pentathlon.
Summerset chief executive
Julian Cook said the retirement
centre is the heart of the village.
“We’ve been wanting to come
to Christchurch for some time
now so we are really excited to be
here at last,” he said.
Riccarton-Wigram Community
Board chairman Mike Mora
and MP for Wigram Megan
Woods attended the opening.
Summerset Retirement Village
is planning to bring another
retirement village to Casebrook
next year.
MORE THAN 100
volunteers helped plant
natives at Trees for
Canterbury’s final planting
event of the year.
Community volunteers
helped plant 1000 trees last
Saturday.
Trees for Canterbury is
a charitable trust aimed
at establishing a sense of
involvement in the community
for physically,
intellectually and socially
disadvantaged people.
They also aim to educate
and create community
awareness for people with
disabilities.
The organisation plants
about 45,000 trees a year.
Projects co-ordinator
Robin Stove said the event
was short and sweet with
all the plants in the ground
in about 45 minutes.
City council park rangers
Robbie Hewson, Nigel Morritt
and volunteers from groups,
including St Nicholas Scouts and
the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist
Temple, took part in the event.
Mr Stove said Halswell Quarry
is a 60.4ha park, with an unusual
INSPIRING: April McLennan, 19, has set up
her own trust to help high school students
pursue jobs they are passionate about.
PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER
April McLennan is 19-years-old and has set up her own
trust to help high school students to pursue and excel in
work they are passionate about. She spoke to Georgia
O’Connor-Harding about setting up her own social
enterprise, life being home-schooled and her trip to the
Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Palo Alto, California
You have set up an
initiative to help other
Christchurch high
school students. Why
did you set up Limitless
Charitable Trust?
Last year was my final
year of school and I
noticed so many people I
knew were overwhelmed
with career and study
path options and were
unsure on what way to
go. At the same time I
knew people who did
work they were really
passionate about and
were working to their
strengths and they could
talk about their jobs all
day. I just thought how
cool it would be if we
could all do work we are
that passionate about.
How will this initiative
set you up for your
ideal career?
Basically we have a
two-part programme and
it is designed to equip
students with the confidence,
awareness and
opportunities to pursue
what they are passionate
about. We are starting
year 10 students with
a Limitless Charitable
Trust two-day conference
in October. That includes
talking to inspiring
speakers. We will have a
diverse range of speakers
including Kiwibank
Young New Zealander
of the Year for 2015 Guy
Ryan, Prime Minister
John Key’s chief science
adviser Dr Victoria
Metcalf and entrepreneur
Hannah Duder. The Zion
Dance Studios will be
performing. After the
conference we will connect
people to an online
portal. It will connect
students to opportunities
that are relevant to them.
For instance if they were
passionate about the environment
and are looking
for work experience
we can connect them to
the organisation.
Are high schools setting
students up well
enough for the workforce?
I think it is really
challenging-we do live
in a world that is rapidly
changing. The workforce
is changing and it can be
difficult for a traditional
school to keep up with
that. I feel that knowing
who you are, what your
strengths are and what
your values are important.
It should be a priority
and that is why we are
focusing on that area. I
think it is important for
students to know what it
is like to go to university.
what I was interested in.
Do you feel like you missed
out on the social side of high
school?
Being involved with lots of
groups and clubs didn’t mean
I missed out. It gives you an
opportunity to meet people
from a wide range of ages,
backgrounds and perspectives.
You make an effort to be part of
those groups. I was involved
in World Vision New Zealand
groups which I meet a lot of
cool people through.
What got you interested in
social enterprise?
I went to the Festival For
The Future programme last
year. They bring together a
whole group of people who are
innovators or thinkers passionate
about a better future.
EXCITEMENT: Limitless Charitable Trust founder April
McLennan with fellow entrepreneur Waleed Yosemite, of
Algeria, waiting for US President Barack Obama to speak
at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit held in Palo Alto in
June.
Social enterprise was talked
a lot about there. A lead-on
from the Festival of the Future
was the programme Live the
Dream which is a social enterprise
accelerator programme.
You go into the programme
with a problem you see in the
world and in nine weeks they
help you develop a solution.
Limitless is what I developed
over the summer with the
programme.
Tell me about your trip to
Palo Alto in June?
It was amazing. There were
incredible speakers. US President
Barack Obama and CEO
of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg
spoke. I also enjoyed meeting
entrepreneurs from around the
world and hearing about their
experiences. It was amazing
in spite of our differences how
much we have in common. After
the programme I connected
with people including a guy
from Montreal and a lady in
Jordan who had really similar
enterprises to Limitless.
What was the most inspiring
story or person you came
across?
I think meeting this lady
from Jordan who had been
working on a similar concept
to Limitless. Wanting to get
girls on a course she had been
working on for 15 years. Also
hearing President Obama
was an obvious stand-out. A
key moment in my life. He
spoke about the biggest issues
of today and how he sees the
entrepreneurial spirit of being
able to start your own business
to create solutions to problems
to where you live. He spoke
about how the Government
needs to step up and make it
easier for people to start their
own businesses.
What do you like to do in
your spare time when you
are not setting up new businesses?
I quite enjoy playing hockey
and photography and I am still
involved with World Vision.
Just spending time outdoors
with friends is what I love.
Varicose veins treated
quickly and effectively
Transform CliniC in mandeville
street riccarton boasts a team of dedicated
professionals, who include the clinic’s
doctor, ian little, registered nurses and
qualified beauty therapists, providing a wide
range of appearance medicine and beauty
therapy treatments for their clients.
one of their main specialties is nonsurgical
varicose vein removal. This is a
simple, quick and effective walk-in walk-out
treatment with no time off work required.
Clients seeking advice about their varicose
veins first undergo a free assessment, which
enables the health professional to determine
if they need treatment, and if so, what the
most appropriate type would be.
Two methods are offered – endo-venous
laser treatment, which is used for both
smaller and larger veins, and ultrasound
guided sclerotherapy. following the
treatment, clients need to wear support
stockings for two weeks. international travel
is not recommended for four weeks after
treatment.
with health provider southern Cross and
relationships with several other health
insurance companies, which means clients
providing it is included in their policy.
appearance medicine is another key
aspect of Transform Clinic’s therapy
options, with skin rejuvenation and skintightening
treatments designed to improve
skin quality as well as enhance self-esteem.
Treatments include the Vampire face lift,
which uses Platelet rich Plasma or PrP, and
fraxel laser treatment. These treatments can
be combined to achieve the desired results.
sclerotherapy is also used to remove
superficial veins on the legs and face. in
addition, the clinic offers mole mapping,
mole removal and primary skin cancer
removal.
The Transform Clinic website,
www.transformclinic.co.nz, has a wealth of
information on the various treatments and
regularly has special offers and promotions.
They also suggest you ‘like’ their facebook
THE shared title of the Christchurch Casino “The
Jazz Library” Charity Poker Event champion for
2016 went to REACH Child Cancer represented by
Nick Henare and to Heart Kids Canterbury
represented by Pat Lodge. Lynne Taylor took an
admirable third place on behalf of the Diabetes
Christchurch Inc.
The Jazz Library Charity Poker Event was held
by Christchurch Casino with $10,000 up for grabs
for the eleven deserving charities to play for. The
event was held on Thursday 15th September in
Sixty6 on Peterborough. The multipurpose
function venue had a prohibition theme with a
library at the front entrance and a speak-easy
below, including “Myrtle”, the 1929 Austin 7C- Cab
Van from by Happy Tours and scintillating
dancing and entertainment throughout the
evening by the talented Epic Entertainment team.
The invited guests in their 1920’s & 30’s
ensembles relaxed with the sultry jazz tones of the
“River City Jazz Men” and enjoyed learning to play
black jack and roulette with some even testing
their croupier skills, all of which combined to
create a fun atmosphere throughout the evening
and a memorable occasion. Mike King was a
masterful MC, adding humour, energy and poker
knowledge to the tournament.
With $10,000 at stake for three lucky charities,
competition at the tables was fierce as even though
this was a fun gaming event the players soon
realised they were playing in a structured poker
tournament and got their game faces on! The top
eleven players then competed at the final table to
play off for the top three spots to take home the
cash for their charity; finalists only found out
who they were playing on behalf of once they had
played their last chip – creating an exciting energy
amongst players and viewers alike.
The eleven charities who were represented at
this event were the Cystic Fibrosis Association,
Ronald McDonald House, Child Cancer
Te Huruhuru Ao o Horomaka. Warm greetings to the
Hornby High School community.
Our new school is coming. Yes, I mean “our”, and yes, I mean “new
school”.
On the one hand I have been talking to students about our school
values, and I begin with this parable.
An elderly man is sitting outside the gates of a school when a teenager
walks up and says, “Hey mister, what’s it like in that school?”
The elderly man replies with the question, “Well, what was it like
at your last school?”
The teen replies: “It was awful, the teachers were hopeless, there
was bullying, they sucked at sport… yeah, really horrible.”
The elderly man replies: “Well, that’s what it’s like at this school”.
The teen walks away.
Some time later another teen walks up and asks the elderly man
the same question, and again the man replies “Well, what was it
like at your last school?”
The teen says: “It was amazing. The teachers were awesome, the
other kids were heaps of fun. We learnt heaps, had brilliant sports
teams. Yeah, I loved it.”
The old man replies: “Well that’s what it’s like in there.”
It’s your school, it’s our school. It will be what we make it. As long
as we share a common set of values it will be great.
And on the other hand there is the matter of the “new school”.
Planning is now well advanced for the rebuild of the school’s
buildings and we are hoping to have some material available for
everyone to see very soon. At the heart of the rebuild will be a
main block nearly 90 metres long which will house a hauora (student
wellness) area, administration and, occupying the bulk of the
building, our specialist learning spaces. We have chosen to place
the creative arts at the centre of these learning areas reflecting
the belief that creativity is at the heart of our future. This reflects
the belief that technology will increasingly replace human work
in routine or repetitive activities. It will be our “humanness”, our
ability to be critical and creative, that will lie at the heart of our future.
Technology and sciences will operate alongside this creative
hub in “state-of-the-art” learning spaces.
This new building will be the first to be built, occupying an “L”
shape where our current administration and library buildings sit.
Once this is completed, three “learning hubs” with more general
learning spaces will be built across and beyond the footprint of the
existing A and S blocks. This rebuild will allow for our growth to
approximately 800 students, a not too distant future as we grow
at an unprecedented pace.
And finally we will have a brand new gymnasium, but not in place
of the current building. Rather, the new gym will sit alongside the
existing gym which will be brought up to the latest building codes.
The specialist block and new gymnasium will be built over the
course of 2017/2018, and should be ready to occupy later in 2018.
To achieve that goal, the fences will go up around the existing
administration and library buildings around February/March 2017.
The learning hubs will then be built, and the whole job finished by
around mid 2019.
And as if all of this weren’t enough, the existing music school and
auditorium will get a makeover, at this stage probably over the
coming 2016/2017 summer break – this is still to be confirmed.
These are exciting times as your school, our school, is finally built
to provide the Hornby community with the secondary school
facilities that match the wonderful learning that goes on inside.
Please do follow my thinking on issues that are both specific to
Hornby High School and also of more general educational interest
Taiwanese students visit
Hornby High School hosted 14 students and their teacher, Ms
Julia Yen, from Hsin Kuo High School, Taiwan. The students
stayed with host families in the community and attended
lessons at school. Each student had a buddy who looked after
them for their week at school. The buddies took them to their
classes and generally made the students feel welcome. The
Taiwanese students and their buddies are pictured at the
farewell morning tea.
