Complex debate rolls on
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
DENTON PARK, Kyle Park
and Warren Park are the last
location options left standing
for where the new Hornby
Library, service centre and
south-west pool will be built.
At an extraordinary public
meeting today, the board will
decide on whether to start or
defer consultation to consider
more options for the $13
million project.
THe Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board
narrowed the location options
down from 11 to three at a
public-excluded briefing last
Tuesday.
It comes after community
board member Debbie Mora
questioned last week whether
there was even a need for a new
library in Hornby.
She told Western News there
is a perfectly adequate library
in Hornby and it was unfair to
the ratepayer to spend money
lavishly.
Statistics showed the current
Hornby Library had 174,178
visitors in the last year which
averaged out to 3350 per week.
Location options ruled out
by the community board for
the facility is the old Sockburn
DECISION: Denton Park is one of three location options for
the new Hornby Library, service centre and south-west pool.
School site, the current Hornby
Library site, the old Sockburn
service centre site, Wigram
Skies and Sockburn
Park.
Options considered
that are no longer
available were Hornby
High School, the
Branston Intermediate
School site, 350 Main
South Rd and the old
bowling club site on
Chalmers St.
Deputy chairwoman Helen
Broughton (below said the
board has decided to go with
options where the city council
owns the land so there
is no cost and no risk of
delay for construction
through lengthy
property negotiations.
She said the board
will need to decide
today on whether
to recommend one
preferred location
option to the city council or
openly consult on all three
locations.
“It is an important meeting
but it is not the last step . . .
anyone who has got concerns,
ideas or suggestions will
certainly be able to make a
formal submission,” she said.
Members from the Hornby
Cricket Club and Hornby
Rugby Football Club concerned
about losing their sports
grounds on Denton Park will
attend the meeting.
A city council report said
Denton Park is a central
location convenient for a wide
cross-section of users and
there are “potentially excellent”
opportunities for integration
into the park from the facility.
Board chairman Mike Mora
said he believes there are some
locations that still need to be
considered but they will emerge
at the meeting today.
THe meeting on the location
options will be held at the
Upper Riccarton Library at
4.30pm
