LAST-MINUTE heroics are
starting to become the norm for
Christchurch Boys’ Alex Harford
after a late penalty sealed a 13-11
win for the defending champions
against Nelson College on
Saturday.
Harford came off the bench
onto the wing, and with 3min
to go, slotted the match-winner
from 35m on the angle.
He had only been on the field
for about 10min before lining up
the vital nudge.
Last week it was Rico Syme
who broke the hearts of the
opposition with a scintillating
50m dash before Harford kicked
the extras to beat St Andrew’s
25-23.
Coach Danny Porte said it was
a “faultless kick.”
“It shows the depth we have in
the squad, it is about the full 22
guys not just the starting 15,” he
said.
The win keeps CBHS at the top
of the table.
They head into next weekend
with a bye, but the team are far
from getting a break.

TWO fighters from International
Taekwon-do in Burnside have
been selected to compete
overseas in October.
Kris Herbison and Callum
Woodill will fight for
their country at the world
championships in Dublin,
Ireland alongside 57 others.
For Herbison, it is a welcome
return to the international scene
after receiving a silver medal in
the team power event in 2009
held in Argentina.
Strong competition and
injuries kept him from selection
until this year and he said he is
really excited to get back into it.
“I have been putting in a lot
of hard yards in the gym and
working on my skills,” he said.
He will compete in the
individual male power category,
which only two from New
Zealand could enter, and is
hoping to make the power team
as well.
The power event tests athletes
by getting them to break a
number of boards.
Woodill will compete in the
individual sparring event and
is hoping to be included in the
power and special techniques
teams as well.
Those teams will be selected
closer to the tournament.

Herbison said.
New Zealand was the top
country at the championships
held in Italy in 2015, third in
2013 in Spain and triumphed
when it was held in Wellington
in 2011.
