ST THOMAS of Canterbury
College’s new principal is
looking forward to his big move
down the hallway.
Deputy principal and head
of sport, Steve Hart, will
be principal starting at the
beginning of next year. Mr Hart
has been deputy principal for
10 years and has been with the
Gardening
school for 13 years.
He will be taking over from
the current principal Christine
O’Neill – who announced her
resignation earlier this year.
Mr Hart said he feels really
grateful to be leading the school.
“It’s an amazing place here.
We produce top quality young
men and I feel privileged to lead
Motoring
them and the school,” Mr Hart
said.
He is looking forward to
working with the staff and
helping develop them as leaders.
Mr Hart said his favourite
part of his role as deputy
principal was working with the
students.
“I love coming to work each
day. The students are honest and
enthusiastic and they always put
a smile on my face,” Mr Hart
said.
Mr Hart said his role as head
of sport was another chance
to help young men develop.
He said they received the best
results when they focused on
performance goals rather than
the outcome.
“I read a quote once which
said ‘sport is a great practise
for life’ and this is so true,”
he said.
Mr Hart said St Thomas of
Canterbury’s improvement in
sport is 100 per cent down to the
hard work staff members put in
when coaching and taking on
other voluntary roles.
He said the future is bright for
the school.
Board of trustees chairman,
Andrew Steel, said they are
“pleased to have someone of Mr
Hart’s calibre to lead the school
into the next stage of college life,
“One of his focuses has been
the embedding of restorative
justice practices which has been
challenging and ultimately
successful,” Mr Steel said.
The board of trustees are
yet to decide on who will be
replacing Mr Hart as deputy
