News.....................................3-17
REPORTER Andrew King
reveals today the extent of the
gun problem in the city – stolen
guns that is.
Criminals are targeting homes
they know contain firearms – 18
went in a recent burglary just
outside of the city.
Firearms are hot property in
the criminal underworld, with
handguns selling for more than
$1000 on the black market.
The gangs appear to be a big
factor in the trade, which goes
hand-in-hand with the illicit
drug market. Police have a task
force under way to crack down
on the upsurge in gun thefts and
raided two properties in Bromley
and Halswell yesterday. Firearms
and drugs were found.
And a great story about
aspiring young model Michaelee
Jayne-McDonald.
The Papanui High School
16-year-old has just won the
Portfolio Model search.
But reporter Georgia
O’Connor-Harding finds out
there’s an amazing back story.
Michaelee, who is a sporting
young woman, had a surfing
accident that nearly left her
paralysed.
BIRD SONG
Contractors restoring the historic Sign
of the Kiwi building have come across
an unexpected find. The contractors
were working on the roof when they
uncovered a message on its lining
which read: ‘If we had of known you
were coming we’d of baked a cake.’
The lyrics come from a 1950s Eileen
Barton song. The city council says
it is likely the message was written
by tradies when they worked on the
building in the 1950s.
