experienced its coldest day on record. <strong>The</strong> temperature didn’t<br />

rise above 1 deg C. On <strong>July</strong> 23, 1851, pioneer William Deans<br />

was among 28 lost in the wreck of the Maria in Cook Strait.<br />

Contractors restoring the historic Sign<br />

of the Kiwi building have come across<br />

an unexpected find. <strong>The</strong> contractors<br />

were working on the roof when they<br />

uncovered a message on its lining<br />

which read: ‘If we had of known you<br />

were coming we’d of baked a cake.’<br />

<strong>The</strong> lyrics come from a 1950s Eileen<br />

Barton song. <strong>The</strong> city council says<br />

it is likely the message was written<br />

by tradies when they worked on the<br />

building in the 1950s.<br />
