The very proactive Glandovey, Idris and Straven Residents’ Association commissioned a private engineering company to provide data which they say strengthens their case that big trucks need to be banned from using the intersection. The residents have a very valid point. It’s the same across Christchurch in fact: Trucks now take short cuts through suburban streets to get to their destinations quicker. WESTERN NEWS Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Tuesday January 9 2018 3 News Battle against quarry plan begins • By Julia Evans TEMPLETON residents are gearing up to battle against plans for a new quarry development. Last week Fulton Hogan put forward a plan for a 170ha quarry on Templeton’s Dawsons, Curraghs and Jones Rds. The announcement comes as Yaldhurst residents continue to battle the noise and dust effects from nearby quarries, which have forced them to wear protective face masks outside their own homes. Testing stations have been set up in Yaldhurst to monitor air quality. Templeton Residents’ Association chairman Garry Kilday said the proposal has sparked “major concerns” for nearby homes in terms of dust, noise and heavy traffic. “The more we look into it, there are more and more issues there are . . . the dust and noise has the potential to reduce house prices. People could be out of pocket because of this,” he said. In a letter sent to residents near the proposed quarry, Fulton Hogan said it would be there for 25 to 40 years to “keep up with ongoing demand for aggregates for greater Christchurch.” PLANS: The letter from Fulton Hogan included a map showing the location of the proposed 170ha quarry on Dawsons, Curraghs and Jones Rds. “We see this location as being suitable because the site has few neighbours and is close to State Highway One.” Mr Kilday said during a southerly wind, homes could be inundated with dust, which could have an impact on health. “Reading up on the impact silica in dust can have on respiratory health is a huge concern,” Mr Kilday said. “We just don’t want it to get to the point where we have to wear masks.” But Fulton Hogan said in the letter it is working on “key quarry management plans” regarding noise and dust. The company will apply for resource consents from the Selwyn District Council and Environment Canterbury in February. water saving tip#2 Mr Kilday said although going up against Fulton Hogan was a “David and Goliath” situation, he believed the voices of the people should be heard. There will be a meeting between the Templeton and Weedons residents associations tomorrow at 7.30pm in St Saviour’s Anglican Church on Kirk Rd to establish the next move. Local News Now In Brief Fire rages, homes at risk GRANTS FOR STUDENTS Ten Christchurch Boys High School students received funding grants to compete in the world schools rugby festival in South Africa from April 2-7. Ryan Barnes, Sam Caldwell, Nathan Fahey-Baker, Mitchell Hay, Ben Lopas, Sean McKeon, Cullen Moody, David Ni, Brandon Prinsloo and Luke Timms were all given $200 to go towards the trip by the Fendalton-Waimairi- Harewood Community Board. COMMUNITY GARDEN Volunteers have been busy weeding, digging, planting and watering the Halswell Community Garden. The group which takes care of the garden on 329 Halswell Rd, is looking for more people to help out on a Saturday morning between 10am and noon - or earlier if it’s predicted to be hot. People who are interested can go along between those times or contact the group on its Halswell Community Garden Facebook page to organise another time. PARK TOILET PLAN Planning is under way for the installation of a single unisex toilet at Harrington Park on Peverel St in Riccarton. Once concept plans are completed, there will be a low-level community engagement process undertaken by the city council. Target water to plants that really need it.
