There are thousands upon thousands of people who take part in those activities but only a tiny fraction of that number make it to the top. One of those who has that potential features in today’s paper. Conor McLennan has a chance to live the surfing dream – that is making a career out of it. The former Christchurch Boys’ High student, who is now based at an academy at Kiwi surfing mecca, Raglan, has just won the national under-18 title. That will hopefully springboard him into the national team where events further afield from our shores will beckon. Burnside High School is investigating the possibility of establishing an association for previous students for the first time in its 58-year history. Principal Phil Holstein said the plan is in “its infancy.” “It’s in the planning phase. But at this stage Phil Holstein we’re seriously considering ways to keep our former students connected to the school. As well as reconnect them with current students,” he said. But he said there are a few hurdles the school and its board of trustees had to overcome before the plan could progress any further. “It’s something that’s really in the mind of the board. But to start it after 58 years, it’s going to be a challenge,” he said. Challenges come in terms of IN TOUCH: Burnside High School is beginning the process of developing an alumni organisation for its more than 25,000 former students. But it would be somewhere in the vicinity of 450 a year for the last 58 years – 26,000. “It’s a lot,” he said. The school and board would then have to look into a programme that would manage the data on former students and appoint a person to be responsible for the association. “We also have to work out the kinds of things it would do,” he said. It is too early to have a time frame in mind, Mr Holstein said. “It will take a while to get all that done,” he said. The school and board is looking to develop a wider strategic plan first. “Once we got that, it’s a very exciting prospect.” Mr Holstein said the idea has been floating around for a while and it is now seizing the opportunity to begin establishing it. “Alumni or old boy and old girl associations are usually associated with longer established and single-sex schools,” he said. Burnside is the largest school in the country, outside Auckland, with a role of more than 2500. “It’s really about keeping that connection to the school even after you leave. I think that’s really important,” he said. Neighbourhood Week is about bringing people closer together and celebrating the unique and diverse mix of each neighbourhood. The work was scheduled to start on Saturday and is expected to go until February 18. Closures will take place at three intersections on different nights between 6.30pm and 5.30am. The intersections affected are SH1/Russley Rd and Memorial Ave, Wairakei Rd and Harewood Rd. RICCARTON RD DELAY Road works, due to begin soon, on Riccarton Rd may be delayed until April or May. City councillor Vicki Buck said staff have met with businesses on Riccarton Rd and they are wanting a few more months before construction begins again.
