22 Tuesday December 13 2016 Halswell take lead in cricket HALSWELL WILL take a 45-run lead into day two of their match against Southern Districts on Saturday. Day one of the match, which was played at Halswell Domain on Saturday, saw Southern put in to bat first after Halswell won the toss. Halswell started well with the ball and had Southern 32/3 after 17 overs before some good middle order partnerships saw Southern get to 135/6. However, bowler Geoff Barclay came back on to take late wickets, reducing Southern to 166/9 from their 50 overs. Barclay finished with figures of 5-39. Halswell were 30/2 after six overs before James Pearson joined opener Matt McClintock in the middle. These two batted well in a partnership worth 75 before Pearson was stumped for 39 off 30 balls and McClintock went out soon after for a patient 47. Leighton Johnston lifted the tempo with a nice 46 runs from 31 balls. However, a collapse saw Halswell go from 170/4 to 214 all out from just 36 overs, leaving Southern 10 minutes to bat until stumps. Johnston took a wicket on the last ball of the day to have Southern 3/1. • By Karolyn Boon FOR ALANA Dalzell, entering into the Ellesmere Women’s Open junior singles tournament was all about getting some bowls experience. The first-year bowler from Coalgate joined the Dunsandel Club where her father and brother play. Arriving at Akaroa on Saturday, she had not previously played a singles match but a loss in her first game was to be the only one of the day. With only three qualifiers out of the eight entrants, Sharheen Eaqub, who beat Dalzell 12-8 in round one, drew with Dalzell in the semi-final. But Dalzell played excellent draw bowls and Eaqub conceded an end short 6-15. Effie Hallewell from the host club, Akaroa, had drawn the bye and waiting is never easy, but at four-all after five of 13 ends, the game was a great spectacle. Dalzell picked up a three on the sixth end to build confidence and won six of the remaining ends to win her first Ellesmere trophy, beating Hallewell 15-9. She won five games in a row on her way to winning the trophy and is a very talented bowler in the making. In the men’s junior singles, played at the Tai Tapu Club, the men also had only three qualifiers from the field of eight. Nick Alfeld from Lincoln drew the bye into the final, leaving Akaroa’s Don Walker to play Lincoln’s Colin Stevenson. Walker was too strong for Stevenson. In the final, Alfeld’s dedication to practice and coaching SELWYN TIMES showed his all-round strengths in the game and Walker conceded 8-17 after 13 of the 15 ends, making Alfeld this year’s junior champion. Ellesmere Cup’s final round saw the Lincoln 5 team, skipped by Lyndsey Withell, beat Lincoln 3 to win the ladies mid-week competition after dropping only one game out of the nine rounds. Withell was lucky to have a consistent team throughout the competition, only having to substitute twice. The team included Margie Watson, Bev Gregg, Eileen Bell and substitute Nancy Jessep. Springston prevailed 11-5 on their home court. Springston now has one win from three rounds and remains in second position in the five-team competition, courtesy of tight losses in their opening games against Killinchy White and Tai Tapu Gold, who lead the competition. Prebbleton/Lincoln are win-less after an opening round bye and second-round loss to Rolleston and sit at the foot of the competition. The interclub competition has its final round on Saturday. Jamieson and Benton featured in Canterbury’s opening round loss to the Central Stags in New Plymouth. Both players went for 30 runs from three overs, with Benton picking up one wicket. Benton featured again in Canterbury’s loss against the Auckland Aces at Hagley Oval on Sunday. He was the best of the Canterbury bowlers taking one wicket and going for just 20 runs from four overs.
