TEENAGERS involved in the 

tragic car crash at Southbridge 

had fooled their parents they 

were asleep in bed. 

Police revealed yesterday that 

when they knocked on doors to 

inform parents of the tragedy, 

some parents thought their children 

were at home. 

Constable Herb Inwood said 

one family initially didn’t believe 

their son had been involved in a 

crash, saying they had only just 

checked on him in his bedroom. 

“So, I said: ‘You’ll have to have 

another look,’ and when they 

pulled the covers back the pillows 

had been stuffed-in to make it 

look like he was still in bed,” he 

said. 

Other parents too believed 

their children were asleep as well 

when police arrived. 

Lily Frances Moore, Samuel 

James Drost, both of Prebbleton, 

and Cole Troy Hull, all aged 15, 

were killed when the car they 

were passengers in failed to take 

a corner on Harts Rd. 

It crashed into a row of trees 

after being airborne for about 

14m, police say. Police believe the 

crash happened late on Sunday 

night but the wreckage was not 

found until 2.20am by passerby 

Katrina Martin. 

The 14-year-old driver was

seriously hurt, while a fifth teen, 

Alex Brown, received minor

Police confirmed yesterday 

that they are investigating an 

altercation between the teenagers 

and another group some time 

on Sunday at the end of Timber 

Yard Rd at Lake Ellesmere. 

Constable Inwood said police 

are making inquiries into what 

exactly happened between the 

two groups but was unable to 

comment further. 

The other party involved in the 

altercation had come forward 

and spoken to police after they 

learned about the crash.

was taken for 

analysis.

Jimmy hunts down the best waves

WHEN JIMMY the dog heads out on 

the waves, he always picks up a trail 

of fans. 

The seven-year-old huntaway has 

surfed some of the most challenging 

breaks in the country – including the 

expert-only barrel waves at Indicators 

Beach in Raglan. 

But his favourite spot is currently 

New Brighton Beach, where he draws 

a crowd of watchers from the pier as 

he surfs. 

Professional big wave surfer Doug 

Young said he had been taking 

Jimmy out surfing since he was a sixweek-old 

puppy. 

“We used to have a surfing school 

and he was like our mascot. When we 

went out he’d wear a red rash shirt 

and was part of the team,” he said. 

He said Jimmy loved the water and 

could dive as well. He had been timed 

diving for 49sec without taking a 

breath. 

Although Jimmy needed help getting 

the board out to the waves, once 

there he had good surfing form, Mr 

Young said. 

“He actually surfs along the wave, 

he doesn’t just ride the white water,” 

he said. 

Mr Young has surfed some of 

the biggest waves in the world, but 

said Jimmy couldn’t come because 

travelling was too difficult. 

“He hasn’t surfed them yet, but it 

would be nice to. Maybe one day he’ll 

pay his own way,” he said.

me many years ago. So it’s no 

surprise that the writer of the 

Anglican press release is himself 

a former journalist. 

Three families will be doing 

it very tough right now, and for 

a very long time to come. They 

are the ones who lost sons and a 

daughter in the Southbridge car 

crash. 

And we reveal today on page 1 

how some, if not all, of the families 

thought they were all tucked 

up in bed.

This week in history saw the opening of the Royal Princess 

Theatre, the city’s first true theatre on December 26, 1863. 

It had been the Canterbury Music Hall. On the same day in 

1870 the first rowing regatta was held on the Avon River. In 

1905 the Automobile Association held a ‘Great Automobile 

Gymkhana’ at Addington trotting grounds. Thirty cars 

took part, and the programme included New Zealand’s first 

official car race. On December 27, 1850, Cressy arrives. 

Although Cantabrians like to commemorate the ‘first four 

ships,’ there were actually eight chartered vessels which 

brought 1500 Canterbury Association settlers in the first 

few months. By the following December, 19 ships had 

brought over 3000 settlers.

Testing has shown a kea found dead 

after a 1080 poison drop in the Okarito 

kiwi sanctuary actually died from 

chocolate poisoning. Two other kea 

chicks remain unaccounted for, but

How you spell the Cathedral

A QUESTION over the spelling 

of Christ Church Cathedral has 

left even the Anglican Diocese 

itself confused. 

The diocese sent out a media 

release last week to say an 

announcement on the fate of the 

Cathedral, which was expected 

before Christmas, would be 

delayed. 

But in the media release, the 

name was spelt two ways, as 

Christchurch Cathedral and 

ChristChurch Cathedral. 

It is also spelt two different 

ways on the Anglican Diocese 

website. 

There are several Christ 

Church Cathedrals in the United 

Kingdom, including in Dublin, 

Newcastle and Oxford. 

The Cathedral in Nelson 

is also called Christ Church 

Lisa Blakie 

A FORMER police officer, 

who worked on the Lisa Blakie 

murder case, has launched a 

Facebook page in support of 

her long time 

campaign 

for police to 

reinvestigate the 

young Timaru 

woman’s death. 

Ms Blakie 

was murdered 

while hitchhiking 

from 

Christchurch to 

Greymouth in 

February 2000, with her body 

found under a 104kg boulder 

in the Porter River, beside State 

Highway 73.

was correct, diocese media 

spokesman Jayson Rhodes 

said he would have to check 

with Bishop Victoria Matthews. 

But Cathedral administrator 

Chris Oldham had an answer. 

He said the official name 

was Christ Church Cathedral, 

named after the Cathedral in 

Oxford which also inspired its 

Darfield man Timothy Taylor 

was found guilty of the 20-yearold’s 

murder and remains 

behind bars after receiving a 

sentence of life imprisonment. 

He has maintained his 

innocence, claiming he picked 

Ms Blakie up but dropped her 

off at a layby before her death. 

And doubts have been 

raised about his guilt, most 

prominently by ex-cop Bridget 

McMenamin, who worked on 

the case as an analyst. 

That involved reading witness 

statements and charting the 

movements of people and 

vehicles. 

The Christchurch woman has 

repeatedly called for police to 

design. 

He said “ChristChurch 

Cathedral” was a brand name, 

as the designers had combined 

the name of the city and of the 

Cathedral. 

“We put the cap C in the 

middle of the word when we 

designed a new logo about 10 to 

12 years ago,” he said. 

Rev Rhodes said he 

would continue to use the 

look into the case again, and 

continued her campaign by 

launching the Justice for Lisa 

Facebook page. 

She met Taylor in prison in 

2014, along with Ms Blakie’s 

father, Doug, and Taylor’s 

lawyer, and he told the trio 

he saw a white Bedford van 

travelling towards Arthur’s Pass 

after he dropped Ms Blakie off. 

He recognised three people 

inside as being from a gang, Ms 

McMenamin said. 

He did not initially tell police 

because he feared retribution, 

she said. Two of the alleged 

occupants underwent DNA 

testing and were cleared, but a 

third did not.

He said the incorrect spellings 

on the website might be 

changed, but that was a lower 

priority. 

“You’ve got the issue of how to 

spell it, and the issue of how to 

rebuild it,” he said.

Ms McMenamin has 

previously called for the man to 

be tested before police told Doug 

Blakie this month they could not 

make the man give a sample, she 

said. That had prompted her to 

start the Facebook page, which 

had more than 330 members 

three days after its launch. 

“I’m hoping to get enough 

support and maybe next year we 

can get this case reinvestigated.”

Murton said in a statement 

police were satisfied with the 

result of the investigation. 

“There is no evidence to 

suggest anyone else was involved 

in the abduction and murder of

RARE BIRD SPOTTED 

A rare bird has been caught on 

camera at Travis Wetland Nature 

Heritage Park. A spotless crake, 

which is similar to a pukeko but 

smaller and less colourful, was 

recorded on a hidden camera set 

by city council field ranger Kenny 

Rose. He had been putting a trail 

camera in parts of the park over 

the past few weeks to monitor 

bird populations. The bird has 

only been spotted at the park a 

few times in the past five years. 

$2 SWIMMING POOL 

The $2 pool has made a 

comeback for summer at 

Rawhiti School. The Coastal- 

Burwood Community Board 

has approved a grant of $7500 

towards the project, run by the 

Eastern Community Sport and 

Recreation Centre. The pool will 

be open until January 29, from 

11am-6pm daily. It is hoped 

the service will keep going 

each summer until the QE II 

replacement facility is built.

Police and the family of 66-yearold 

Colin Meese, who has been 

missing from his Hoon Hay 

property since Boxing Day, have 

concerns over his well-being. He 

was last seen at about 6.30pm at 

his home before leaving in his 

black/grey Mitsubishi Pajero,

Carlton Syndicate. 

After 56 years, 

the syndicate is still 

working on the form, 

and still losing with sad 

consistency. Not that they 

mind too much. 

Over the years Cyril 

Aitken and his son Peter, 

Russell Brown, Ian Cox, 

Jeff Mugford and Barry 

Freear have enjoyed the 

bull and banter as much as 

they have the betting. 

The syndicate started 

in 1960 in the back bar of 

the United Services Hotel,

prompts clean-up calls

A HEDGEHOG found 

dead with its head trapped 

in a plastic KFC Krusher 

cup has renewed calls for 

people to stop littering. 

Melanie Karst and her 

eight-year-old daughter 

found the hedgehog dead 

in a ditch full of water near 

Ferrymead Heritage Park. 

She said the discovery reduced 

them both to tears. 

It renewed the need to 

educate people to throw 

their rubbish in the bin, or 

recycle it properly, she said. 

The hedgehog looked to 

have been trying to get the 

last of the milkshake out of 

the plastic cup, when it got 

its head stuck, she said. 

It appeared to have then 

fallen into the ditch and 

drowned, she said. 

The ditch filled up during 

high tide, and flowed 

back out to the estuary. 

Ms Karst said she got

Square. Peter, Ian and Russell, 

all schoolmates from 

Christchurch Boys’ High 

School, would meet there 

every Friday night for a 

beer and a yak about the 

next day’s racing.

ledger, they have their 

sights set on two targets – 

60 years together and the 

final payout at the Carlton. 

She would like to see 

KFC consider making 

its lids out of cardboard, 

rather than plastic. 

But Restaurant Brands, 

which owns the chain, 

said while it was an “unfortunate 

incident” it was 

not currently considering 

replacing the recyclable 

plastic cups and lids. 

“Our KFC stores provide 

a number of rubbish bins 

for customers to dispose 

of any rubbish,” a spokeswoman 

said. 

She said Restaurant 

Brands was also a member 

of the Public Place Recycling 

Scheme. 

Jacqui Blair, who runs 

Hedgehog Rescue New 

Zealand, said they often 

got their heads stuck in 

cup lids, because they were 

hungry and searching for 

food. 

She urged people to 

throw their rubbish away 

properly.

TV star paid $15k by taxpayers 

REAL HOUSEWIVES of 

Auckland star Angela Stone is 

getting paid taxpayer money 

for her styling advice – nearly 

$15,000 of it. 

Christchurch-based Ms Stone, 

who made waves on the reality 

show by gifting the other 

women her book on styling, is 

one of three stylists hired by the 

New Zealand Defence Force to 

help young people find a job. 

She has been helping at Burnham 

Military Camp. 

It is part of the Limited Services 

Volunteer programme the 

Defence Force runs on behalf of 

the Ministry of Social Development. 

Stone is there to provide 

grooming and presentation tips. 

Ms Stone has done 49 of these 

sessions and been paid $14.9k 

for her services, Radio New 

Zealand reported. 

Speaking to RNZ, Ms Stone 

said the sessions are very rewarding 

for the participants. 

“It’s competitive out there 

and so I’m in the empowerment 

business and I show these young 

men and young women how to 

make the most of themselves,” 

she said. 

Participants, aged between 18 

and 24, pay $6000 for these sessions, 

which also teach reading,

WHEN YOU go to the Lyttelton 

Arts Factory’s Oliver Twist, 

don’t expect to be tapping along 

to well-known classics such as 

Consider Yourself or tearing up 

to torch song As Long As He 

Needs Me. 

The original adaptation of 

Charles Dickens’ most famous 

novel is especially dark, with domestic 

violent scenes that makes 

you nearly jump out of your seat. 

The show immediately bursts 

into life from the get-go with 

dark, poignant music merging 

with a bitter scene that screams 

the underworld of Victorian 

London, in spite of a contemporary 

take on the show. 

It is a simple scene, with sullen 

characters wrapped in blankets 

huddling around a dim fire, but 

you could feel the chill creeping 

into your bones. 

Before long the show abruptly 

changes scenes to Twist’s dying 

mother giving birth to him in 

a unsympathetic Polish refugee 

centre. 

MOVING PLAY: Annie 

Kirkman as Nancy and 

Clive Kneller as Fagin in 

the Lyttelton Arts Factory’s 

adaptation of Oliver Twist. 

Twists’ mother, played by Suzy 

Kingston is both a haunting and 

comforting presence throughout 

the show regularly appearing to 

sing a beautiful classical ballad 

during Twist’s darkest moments. 

But Kingston is not the only 

actor to stand out in the show in 

what is a strong cast. 

Clive Kneller as the infamous 

Fagin was the most memorable 

actor from the show. In spite of 

his character being a transparent 

jerk, Kneller’s charisma lit up the 

stage. 

You could mistake Fagin for 

being a lovely old fellow but he is 

bad-to-the bone, often appearing 

mentally unstable which 

Kneller does a marvellous job of 

portraying. 

The show is set in multiple 

time zones which I think is 

clever because it is a solid reminder 

that homelessness today 

is not that much different from 

Victorian London times. 

But I missed seeing the classic 

songs from the Oliver! musical, 

in spite of the band doing grand 

job of creating dark music to 

match the themes in the show. 

They should have played all 

the music – there was a random 

dance club scene where all the 

children from Fagin’s gang were 

raving. 

I just thought this was slightly 

unrealistic – it didn’t match 

Dickens’ works and I found 

homeless children raving 

strange. 

But overall the show is incredibly 

raw and can, at the most unexpected 

moment, sentimentally 

grab you. 

What is most brilliant is the 

show supports Christchurch 

City Mission.

BROWNIE 

Ingredients 

225g Butter, cubed 

200g Dark chocolate, coarsely 

chopped, or use chocolate 

buttons 

1½ cups Brown sugar, firmly 

packed 

4 Eggs 

1½ cups Flour 

½ cup Cocoa powder 

½ cup Chocolate chips 

1½ cups Raspberries, fresh or 

frozen 

1 to dust Icing sugar 

Directions 

3 Tbsp Sugar 

1 pinch Sea salt 

Directions 

Separate the eggs. 

Whisk egg yolks with 

buttermilk and baking soda. 

Sieve in the flour and baking 

powder and add the salt and 

sugar. Whisk until smooth. 

Stir in melted butter. 

In a separate bowl whip the 

egg whites until stiff peaks and 

fold through the pancake batter. 

Serve with berry compote, 

maple cinnamon butter and 

lashings of maple syrup. 

Blueberry compote 

Heat oven to 170 deg C fan 

bake. 

Line a 17 x 27cm slice tin with 

non-stick baking paper with an 

overhang on all sides. 

Place butter and dark 

chocolate in a heatproof bowl 

and microwave on high for 

two minutes to melt. Stir until 

smooth. 

Beat in brown sugar with a 

wooden spoon, then stir in eggs, 

one at a time. Stir in sifted flour 

and cocoa powder, then stir in 

chocolate chips. 

Pour into tin and scatter 

with raspberries (defrosted, if 

using frozen). Bake for 40 to 

45 minutes or until a skewer 

inserted comes out clean but 

moist. 

Remove to a wire rack to cool. 

Dust with icing sugar and cut 

into squares to serve. 

BLUEBERRY AND 

BUTTERMILK PANCAKES 

Ingredients 

3 Eggs 

1½ cups Buttermilk 

½ tsp Baking soda 

225g Flour 

2 tsp Baking powder 

½ tsp Salt 

1 Tbsp Sugar 

30g Butter, (salted and ensure it 

is melted) 

Blueberry compote 

250g Blueberries, fresh or frozen 

¼ cup Sugar 

½ tsp Arrowroot, required if 

using frozen blueberries 

Maple and cinnamon butter 

125g Unsalted butter, softened 

30 ml Maple syrup 

½ Tbsp Cinnamon 

Over low heat, stew 

blueberries with sugar 

and continue to cook until 

thickened. If you are using 

frozen blueberries, once 

blueberries are cooked, add the 

arrowroot and continue to cook 

until thickened. 

Maple and cinnamon butter 

In a mixer, blend butter with 

paddle until soft. Add remaining 

ingredients and whip until well 

combined.

If using juicer: Juice the watermelon, stra wberries, a nd 

lime according to juicer’s instructions. Discard the pulp. 

If using blender or food processor: Blend the watermelon, 

stra wberries, a nd lime u ntil smooth. Strain through a 

sieve, pushing the juice through with a spatula. Discard 

the solids. 

1. Mix the chia seeds into the juice a nd refrigerate for 

a bout 15 minutes to let the chia seeds swell. 

2. Muddle 3 mint leaves in the bottom of each glass. 

F ill glasses with ice (optional). Stir the juice to break up 

the chia seeds, pour into glasses, a nd serve. 

3. In a large jar or pitcher, combine tea, cinnamon 

sticks, pomegranate juice, ora nge juice, ora nge, lemon, 

lime, a nd apple. Refrigerate for at 

least 1 hour a nd preferably overnight. 

4. Just before serving, stir in carbonated water. Serve in 

glasses over ice.

School holiday boredom buster

IT’S BEEN a while since my 

daughter required entertaining 

in school holidays, but I can still 

appreciate the need to have a few 

tricks for boredom-busting up 

the sleeve. 

And given we lived, and still 

do, on-site at a nursery it’s probably 

no surprise that my number 

one trick is to get gardening – 

particularly growing vegetables. 

Getting busy in the garden is 

a great way to entertain kids but 

it also gets them outside and can 

help instil from an early age a 

love of nature, plants and growing. 

My three tricks for gardening 

with kids are – keep it quick, 

keep it easy and keep it fun. 

Keep it quick means plant 

fast growing vegetables that can 

be harvested early. Veges like 

radishes, lettuces, peas, spinach 

and zucchini all mature quickly 

and can be eaten off the plant or 

before they fully mature. 

Next, keep it easy. This means 

making sure you pick the right 

spot for their garden. Don’t fob 

them off with a dreary part of the 

garden. Give them a prime spot 

to plant. This will help them get 

EASY: Growing vegetables is 

child’s play. 

the best results and ensure they 

stay encouraged and interested. 

It’s also important to make sure 

you plant the seedlings in places 

it’s easy for small people to reach 

and work on. 

If you can, get them their own 

kid-sized tools to make it easy 

for them to dig and plant some 

are bright and colourful and 

perfect for small hands. 

And, as a general rule, plant 

seedlings over seeds. Unless 

you’re planting something like 

sunflowers, it’s easier and far 

more likely to get you better 

results if you plant seedlings. 

The reason is he hard work of 

getting the seeds germinated and 

established as plants is already 

done – a process which isn’t easy 

and can take anywhere from six 

to 12 weeks. That’s a lot of time 

in a kid’s world. 

Next, keep it fun. Grow anything 

that’s different and colourful 

or can be eaten straight from 

the garden. Try rainbow beet for 

its colour, italian broccoli for its 

space-aged looking shape and 

sugar snap peas and butter beans 

for their tastiness straight off the 

plant. 

And don’t let the fun stop at 

planting and eating. Get your 

kids involved in any form of pest 

control. 

Who doesn’t remember trying 

to catch white butterfly with 

nets? 

Or for a more modern approach, 

send your kids out with 

water guns to get the butterflies, 

or water the plants.

Course to help find your season

FOURTEEN-year-old Danielle 

wanted to get out of her shell and 

grow her self-esteem. 

A two-day styling course 

where teenage girls learn how 

to walk, talk, dress and discover 

their personal style gave her the 

chance to do just that. 

Has it helped? “Yes. I definitely 

feel more confident,” a smiling 

Danielle said. 

She’s one of 11 girls that attended 

the workshop held by the 

The Real Housewives of Auckland 

reality TV star and styling guru 

Angela Stone. 

Over two six-hour lessons 

the girls were taught a range of 

styling tips including how to 

co-ordinate a wardrobe, colour 

match to their skin tone, and 

how to look after hair, skin and 

nails. 

“We’ve been learning about 

make up, different body types 

and how to dress them, colours 

and what season we are,” Olivia, 

14, said. 

How do you find your season? 

The girls chipped in with the 

answer, sounding like styling 

consultants already. 

“She puts fabric palettes to 

your face and flips through and 

looks at your undertone – so 

either blue or yellow. Blue is 

summer and winter and yellow 

is autumn and spring,” Danielle 

says. 

“Like I usually wear silver 

jewellery but I should wear gold 

closer to my face because I’m 

autumn,” Olivia tells me. 

Whether it was for a confidence 

boost or styling tips, all 

the girls had different reasons for 

attending Ms Stone’s course. 

“I thought it might help me 

be a bit more comfortable in 

myself,” Danielle said. 

“I’ve been sewing nearly all 

my life, so I’ve always been 

interested in beauty, clothes and 

fashion,” Charlotte, 14, said. 

“I’m really interested in the 

same things she is and I’m really 

inspired by her because she 

works hard for what she wants. 

I’ve never had make-up put on 

or knew how to do it, so it’s been 

really helpful” Olivia said. 

While some may raise an 

eyebrow at the idea of teaching 

young women how to look good, 

the girls were adamant it’s been a 

body-positive workshop. 

“I feel like my hips are too 

wide but she said it’s my shape 

and I’ll grow into it,” Olivia said. 

“There hasn’t been a negative 

thing said. We’re learning about 

gratitude.” 

All in all, the consensus from 

the girls was if you’re not very 

confident, it’s definitely a course 

you should take.

Simply hanging out on Xmas Day 

AFTER A whirlwind and 

chaotic lead up, I’m pleased to 

say that we enjoyed a lovely, 

quiet and fun Christmas Day. 

Mostly, I loved it for the fact 

that it was an enforced “family 

day”, with nothing else to do 

but hang out, Skype relatives, 

and relish in the excitement 

that comes after the Big Man 

has been. 

And although it was low-key, 

it was still about the food. I 

accepted that the rules would 

fly out the window once we hit 

the 25th, and I knew to brace 

myself for the sugar highs (and 

lows) that are inextricably 

linked with Yuletide festivities. 

I set myself up by letting 

the kids dive into their Santa 

sack and rip into their handful 

of chocolate Santas and gold 

coins as soon as they woke. I 

figured it was better to let them 

get stuck in early so they could 

run it off during the day, rather 

than string it out to deal with 

consequences later on. And 

if they can’t eat chocolate for 

breakfast on Christmas day, 

then when can they? 

As we were having a ‘homealone’ 

Christmas, we let the 

girls set our menu for the 

day. With only themselves to 

please, they cordially agreed 

on homemade waffles, yoghurt 

and fresh berries for breakfast; 

a picnic for lunch (including 

pain au chocolat, nuts and 

fruit); and pizza and pavlova 

for dinner. 

But their menu was also set 

according to their ability to 

participate. They knew they 

had to assist with preparing 

their chosen meals and were 

set to task to collect raspberries, 

snow peas, salad and mint 

from our garden; help whip

the pavlova and cream; pack 

the picnic lunch; sprinkle the 

grated cheese and ham onto 

the pizza base; and set the 

Christmas table. For the most 

part, they were keen to get 

involved and happy to know 

they had contributed. 

In between preparing and 

eating our way through the 

day, however, we took a trip to 

the Margaret Mahy Playground 

so to stave off any chance of 

anyone falling into a food 

coma. The park was relatively 

busy and the girls seemed to 

bond with other kids whose 

parents obviously shared the 

same thought process as us, ie, 

get them running to burn off 

the excess sugar and E-numbered 

highs. 

Once sufficient energy was 

spent, we headed home for 

an early dinner, and the girls 

were happy to be fed, showered, 

read and into bed by 

730pm. They were contentedly 

shattered after an early start to 

what proved to be a busy and 

merry day. 

Although there was a part 

of me that missed celebrating 

in the usual way with our 

extended family (think a huge 

lunch filled with an assortment 

of meats, potatoes, vegetables, 

salads, trimmings and multiple 

puddings), we enjoyed the 

bespoke and low-key day that 

was created as we went. Not 

too much fuss, not too much 

stress and definitely not as 

much over-indulgence as I’d 

normally see. 

It’s hard to believe it’s all 

over. But for now, I’m enjoying 

the focus of kicking back, relaxing 

and gearing up to bring 

in the New Year. See you later

Dylan Heap title favourite

NEW ZEALAND’S top tennis 

players aged 16 and under will 

fight for their age group’s biggest 

national title at Wilding Park 

next week. 

Christchurch’s Dylan Heap 

will be the favourite to take out 

the 16 and under New Zealand 

Junior Championships title 

he won 12 months ago. Heap 

completely dominated last year’s 

tournament, not dropping a 

single set. 

The 16-year-old will have to 

overcome plenty of tough competition 

if he is to do the same 

when play begins on Monday. 

At least two other Cantabrians 

will also fancy their chances, including 

the likes of 15-year-old 

Jamie Garbett, while 14-year-old 

Reece Falck is an outside chance 

as he prepares for a crack at the 

14 and under title in Auckland. 

Heap has been in fine form 

recently, making it to the 

semi-finals of the 18 and under 

nationals in Auckland earlier 

this month. He cruised through 

the first three rounds of the 

tournament with relative ease, 

dropping just one set on his 

way to the semi-final. He then 

ran into No 1 seed and eventual 

tournament winner, Ajeet Rai,

Whorton, nicknamed Pope, 

was named the MVP of the New

League in 2002, and played for 

Canterbury from 2001-2003 with

Well-liked in the Christchurch 

basketball community, he held 

the NBL modern-era record 

for points in a game, with his 

50-point effort standing until 

2015 when beaten by Taranaki 

import Aaron Fuller. 

His life-changing moment 

came on the game show, but what 

he and his wife didn’t know was 

that the Cleveland Cavaliers star 

would personally hand-deliver

Veteran baseball pitcher coming to Christchurch

A FORMER World Series 

winning baseball pitcher will 

visit Christchurch in the new 

year to help encourage young 

players. 

Jim Kaat’s playing career 

spanned four decades, including 

16 golden glove awards, three allstar 

appearances and five Major 

League Baseball teams. 

For the next two months, the 

78-year-old will be golfing, fishing 

and teaching young baseball 

players the art of pitching. 

Kaat arrives in Auckland on 

January 4 and will spend 

a week hosting coaching 

seminars in Christchurch 

from February 1. 

“The No 1 thing I hope 

to do is to encourage and 

motivate young people to 

play the game,” sad Kaat. 

“If New Zealand can increase 

the participation in baseball 

it will create interest from

colleges and professional scouts, 

while at the same time it will also 

motivate local companies, possibly 

the Government.and

Baseball is growing in 

Christchurch, especially at junior 

level. Hemera said player numbers 

are up 30 per cent over the 

last 12 months and at under-15 

level, the Canterbury club competition 

has grown from four to 

five teams. 

While young players may not 

be familiar with seeing Kaat on 

the field, they may well recognise 

his voice. 

Since retiring from the game 

in 1983, Kaat had a brief coaching 

career before becoming a 

full-time broadcaster for major 

league games. During the 90s 

and 2000s, he became the voice 

of the New York Yankees and 

won seven New York Emmys.
