Countdown to big rock concert
• By Tom Doudney
THE LINCOLN Domain is
about to be transformed from
a sleepy sports and recreation
ground to rock ’n’ roll showpiece.
With Selwyn’s biggest ever
music festival just around the
corner on March 4, preparation
will begin on Monday, almost a
week before the first band takes
the stage.
The show features big name
Kiwi acts, including Mi-Sex,
Dragon, The Jordan Luck Band,
Annie Crummer, Margaret
Urlich, Debbie Harwood, Sharon
O’Neill and Jason Kerrison, as
well as many other artists.
Promoter David Parlane said
bringing everything together for
the day was a bit like organising
an army.
“You’ve got to get everybody in
at the right time and in the right
spot.”
The first trucks will roll in on
Monday, putting the 20m by 15m
wide stage in place, with more
work on fully assembling it and
putting up the marquees to take
place over the next two days.
About 1km of fencing, 70
portaloos, 24 urinals and four
6.1m beverage chillers will also
be installed at the ground during
the week.
There will be 28 food vendors,
more than 125 festival staff and
of course 62 artists on stage.
“We hope to be in concertprepared
mode by about 8am on
the Friday morning so if there is
anything that needs to be fixed
we have got all day to figure it
out,” Mr Parlane said.
The first big name artist expected
to arrive in Lincoln will
be Kerrison on March 2, with
most of the others getting in on
March 3.
The ground has capacity for
10,000 people. Mr Parlane said
ticket sales had been strong but
there were still some available
from Ticketek.
While special bus passes
between Christchurch and the
show were almost sold out, there
is a plan to increase the number
of public buses on the day.

HATS OFF to all of the Selwyn
fire fighters who fought last
week’s savage Port Hills blaze.
They did a fantastic job against
extreme odds, and their magnificent
efforts almost certainly
saved many more properties
from being destroyed.
If the fire had not been
stopped on top of the Cashmere
Hills, who knows what carnage
it could have caused if it was able
to sweep down into Westmorland
and beyond.
The flammable materials
and vehicles (with petrol) in
residential areas, combined with
tinder dry vegetation, would
have turned the blaze into an
unimaginable fire storm.
We cover their deeds on pages
4-5 today, but the message from
last week’s fires is that we have
to be super careful for the rest of
the summer.

use of Weedons motel site
• By Tom Doudney
A FORMER motel’s planned
transformation into social
housing has Weedons residents
feeling uneasy.
The Salvation Army plans to
use the former Blue Gum Lodge
Motel, on State Highway 1 north
of Rolleston, to accommodate
people on the Ministry of Social
Development’s social housing
register.
An anonymous flyer recently
distributed to Weedons residents
had suggested the motel
was going to be used as a halfway
house for recently-released
prisoners. Salvation Army social
housing national director Greg
Foster said this was false but
an administrative office for its
post-prison reintegration service
would also be based on the site.
The motel closed in August
2015 because some of its land
was needed for the Southern
Motorway extension. It was
bought by the New Zealand
Transport Authority which is in
discussions with the Salvation
Army on a contract to lease the
property.
In spite of the assurances that

it wouldn’t be a halfway house,
locals who spoke to the Selwyn
Times were still uneasy about
the prospect of social housing
on the site.
Weedons resident Gary Doyle
said he wanted more information
about plans for the site and
what sort of tenants would be
housed there.
“Some of the people they get
in some of their houses have
an interesting background,” he
said.
Another Weedons resident,
who declined to be named, said
he also had questions about
what type of tenants would be
accommodated.
“Are they getting put out here
because they are not suitable for
elsewhere or is it just simply because
of the housing shortage?”
He was concerned about a potential
increase in crime in the

area and also whether opening
social housing, in conjunction
with increased commercial
development in the area, would
have an effect on residents’
house values.
Mr Foster said the Salvation
Army hoped to provide housing
on the site as soon as negotiations
were complete, expected
to be some time in the next few
months.
“We started consultation with
the Selwyn District Council and
with the Selwyn Community
Care Network in November and
discussions with both are ongoing,”
he said.
The initial plan was to house
seven single people in the available
units. There would be a
manager on site 24 hours a day.
Salvation Army Corps Officer
Lieutenant Nathan Holt would
also be visiting the site regularly
to support tenants.
“He’s happy to talk to anyone
in the community who has further
questions,” Mr Foster said.

ALLEGED SHOPLIFTER
Keen observation by shop staff
and quick action by police resulted
in an alleged serial shoplifter
being arrested at The Warehouse
Rolleston on Thursday. A staff
member at nearby Rolleston
Hammer Hardware observed a
woman acting suspiciously in
the store before heading towards
The Warehouse and called
police. Police and security at The
Warehouse used security cameras
to observe the woman allegedly
smuggle clothing out of the store
and she was apprehended just
outside. The Christchurch woman,
43, has been charged with this and
three other instances of alleged
shoplifting at The Warehouse
Eastgate between December and
this month. She will appear in
court on March 31.

A couple of Hearing HEAR
S
Dawn and George Prattley are my HEARING
HEARO’s!! They are such a wonderful couple.
I loved meeting them and helping them hear
better. The lovely part about audiology is
that when someone chooses to come into
the clinic, that is just the beginning of a long
relationship. Hearing changes over time and
I am happy that our paths will continue to
cross for years to come.
Dawn had been having complications from
Meniere’s Disease effecting her right ear
since 2013. The condition worsened and
in January last year her specialist
needed to do a intratympanic
Gentamycin injection into
her right ear drum. While
this would help Dawn in
many ways, the downside of
this treatment was that
she would be deaf in
that ear. He warned
her that hearing
aids would be highly
unlikely to assist her.
“In May, my GP suggested that I go and see
Brenna, to have a hearing test and get her
opinion and advice,” says Dawn. “After the
testing, Brenna put some hearing aids in and
tuned them to my hearing (or lack thereof).”
“Instantly I noticed the difference to the
sounds I was hearing. I left Brenna’s clinic
that day knowing that hearing aids would
help me. That was a great feeling!”
“I thought about it for a week and then said
to my husband George that is was no use
me getting my hearing sorted if he didn’t….
because he would still need to turn the TV
up too loud if he didn’t get hearing aids too!
George agreed and now we are both wired for
sound.”
“Brenna is lovely, gentle and patient. She answered
all of our questions and did not push
us into buying hearing aids. It was such a positive
experience.” “If you have hearing aids in
a draw and don’t wear them or you need a

Port Hills fire
SELWYN TIMES
Great job guys!
WELL EARNED: Lincoln firefighters (from left), Kyle Steans, Josh
Nelson, Paul Barbet, Gavin Lack and Ollie Rutland-Sims enjoy a
lunch of baked potatoes and American hotdogs after returning
to the station for a rest on Thursday.
STANDING THEIR GROUND: Rolleston firefighters protecting
houses on Kennedys Bush Rd.
• By Tom Doudney
SELWYN FIRE chiefs have paid
tribute to their crews who spent
much of last week battling the fires
which tore across the Port Hills.
Brigades from across Selwyn
were involved with fighting the
fires which burned through
2075ha, destroyed nine houses
and damaged two more.
Lincoln fire chief Jeremy
Greenwood said he was extremely
proud of what his crews
had done since being one of the
first brigades in action when the
initial fire broke out on Early
Valley Rd on Monday last week.
“The guys have just worked
tirelessly, just worked and
worked and worked, without
once questioning the workload,”
Mr Greenwood said.
“We had guys who would be
working at night, they would get
a few hours sleep and then be returning
to their day jobs as well.”
Mr Greenwood said Lincoln
crews had been doing tough six
to eight hours rotating shifts.
“It’s tough terrain, a lot of hill
work and a lot of carting gear up
and down hills and a lot of physically
demanding work,” he said.
“It takes a toll and that’s why
we were very mindful of the importance
of rotating those crews.”
HARD YARDS DONE: Lincoln firefighters (from left), Ollie
Rutland-Sims, Josh Nelson, Ange Hooper, Gavin Lack and
Kyle Steans still in high spirits heading back to their station
after a long day and a variety of missions on Thursday.
Rolleston fire chief Nigel Lilley
echoed Mr Greenwood’s praise
when talking about how his firefighters
had performed their duty.
“I’m just so proud of how
professional and willing they
were to give their time, for free
as always, in these extreme circumstances,”
he said.
Crews had to retreat several
times when the risk to them
became too high.
“Safety comes first but there is
still always imminent danger,”
Mr Lilley said.
Both chiefs also thanked the
families and employers who had
been understanding of firefighters
having to leave their jobs and
homes for many hours; and the
businesses and members of the
public who gave food, refreshments
and messages of support to
firefighters during the operation.
Mr Greenwood said it was
overwhelming to know they had
that level of support.
“We don’t expect anything at
all, it’s what we do, what we have
been trained for, and we don’t
expect that but it’s extremely appreciated,”
he said.

Student vet’s South African safari
ROLLESTON veterinary student
Heather Neill plans to put her
training to good use, working
with wildlife in South Africa in
June and July.
Ms Neill, 20, is in her
third year of study at Massey
University, has been given
the chance to take part in a
two week-long volunteering
programme for veterinary
students in one of the more
disadvantaged areas.
The Safari4U Veterinary
Programme will see her working
with large and small, domestic
and wild animals as she helps
to treat some of those which
would otherwise be without
care.
She will also be involved in
educating the locals about animal
care.
Ms Neill said that while there
were a large number of worthy
charities providing aid to people
in impoverished regions of
African countries, she felt that
animals in the region were often
overlooked.
“I’m super excited for the
opportunity to make a
difference in a community
which otherwise would probably
remain relatively disadvantaged,”
she said.
“I want to do what little I can
to learn and gain new skills so
I can be more helpful in the
future.”
Taking part in the programme
will cost her more than $6000
and she has created a Givealittle
page to take donations.
Ms Neill said the ability to get
hands-on experience in this field
within New Zealand was limited,
although she tried to take every
opportunity she got.
Her desire to help people and
animals and the fact she liked
problem solving were factors in
her decision to become a vet.
She has a cat called Winston
and has recently been elected secretary
of the Massey University
Wildlife and Conservation Club
for this year.

money to help Ms Neill
take part in the programme

Are you ready?
As I write this we are approaching

150 firefighters are working to
extinguish the Port Hills fire.
I am asking you ‘are you prepared
if disaster strikes? Do you
have an emergency kit? Is it up
to date? And are you registered
with Selwyn Gets Ready?’
The district council uses a
community response model
across the district to meet the
civil defence needs of our
communities. It’s about understanding
our hazards and being
organised and ready to look after
each other in an emergency.
The model is based on
neighbourhood support groups.
Street/road co-ordinators are
responsible for checking on their
neighbourhood and reporting
back to a locally based community
response team. This team’s
role is to co-ordinate the local
response and communicate directly
with the district council’s

in the same way.

Plea to help school restore river
A crowdfunding campaign
to restore native vegetation
along a 200m section of the
Halswell/Huritini River needs
a final boost to hit its target.
Te Ara Kakariki Canterbury
Greenway Trust is aiming to
raise $9000 for Ladbrooks
School children to restore a
place by the river known as
Stackwoods Bend.
The trust’s mission is to
bring pockets of native plants
back to Selwyn between the
mountains and the sea. Part of
its work also involves educating
young people about native
plants and their ecological significance
through school field
trips known as Kids Discovery
Plantout days.
The crowdfunding campaign,
a first for the trust, has
raised $8203 since December.
It has been run with the support
of the Million Metres
streams project.
Te Ara Kakariki co-ordinator
Elizabeth Guthrey said
the trust was thankful for the
support it had received so far.
“It will go to a great cause.
The kids love Discovery Plantout
days and the plantings
will contribute to a healthier
river and sorely needed habitat
for native birds,” she said.
Million Metres matched
funding for the first $2000 in
individual donations, and the
Kingswood Skis company has
recently joined the cause by
committing to funding a metre
of planting for every pair
of skis sold before March 1.
Kingswood Skis director
Kris Herbert said healthy
waterways were important to
everyone who loved spending
time in the outdoors.
“Skiing powder, catching a
wave or jumping into a fresh
blue swimming hole – these
are all part of a lifestyle that
makes the most of our beautiful
country,” he said.
“You can’t help but want to
protect these places when you
spend time in them. We’ve
signed online petitions and
grumbled over recent reports
that 62 per cent of lowland
rivers are unswimmable, but
this project is actually doing
something about it.”
NATURE: The
Stackwoods Bend
section of the Halswell/
Huritini River is the site
of a planned restoration
programme. Kids
Discovery Plantout
facilitator Lou Drage
and Ladbrooks School
pupils learn about the
river’s native plants
and their ecological
significance.
If more than $9000 is raised,
more trees will be planted.
•To donate or watch a
video to find out more
about the project, visit

Selwyn Sounds
Hear tracks from new Mi-Sex album live
• By Tom Doudney
IF KIWI rock heavyweights
Mi-Sex needed any validation
for their decision to record their
first new album in 33 years, the
live crowds’ reaction gave it to
them.
The band’s fith album Not
From Here was released in September
with vocalist Steve Balbi
replacing original singer Steve
Gilpin, who died in 1991.
Mi-Sex will co-headline the
Selwyn Sounds concert in Lincoln
on March 4 with Dragon.
Other big acts will include The
Jordan Luck Band, Annie Crummer,
Margaret Urlich, Debbie
Harwood, Sharon O’Neill and
Jason Kerrison.
Keyboardist Murray Burns
said the band had been playing a
mix of old and new material on
their recent North Island tour
with The Feelers and Dragon.
“You could tell that some of
the younger members of the
crowd knew a few of our songs
like Computer Games and Blue
Day but they didn’t really know
the other ones,” Burns said.
“What was very rewarding
for us was that an audience that
weren’t really familiar with our
old and new material responded
in some ways stronger to our
newer stuff than our older stuff.
That made the whole experience
of recording new songs feel really
worthwhile to us.”
Ater so long without writing
music together, Burns found
working on new material to be
surprisingly easy.
“To jump in a room with
someone you have never written
a song with, with Steve Balbi,
was an amazing experience. Steve
is a fantastic songwriter and
lyricist and the basic embryos of
those songs came together in a
matter of minutes.”
Burns said the band had been
having a great time since they
started touring again in 2011.
“We are treating Mi-Sex more
as an experience again ater 30
years of not playing,” he said.
“We are not feeling that we are
going to go out and conquer the
world, we are not 21-years-old
any more, but we are having a
really good time playing and we
also had a really good time making
this record.”
When they’re not touring, the
band members live far apart – in
Christchurch, Auckland, Sydney
and, in Burns’ case, Byron Bay,
New South Wales.
“We decide on set lists and
things like that when we meet at
airports quite oten,” he said.
Burns produces music for
young bands from his own studio
but aside from that, doesn’t
listen to much new music.
“I live in the countryside and I
quite enjoy just the empty space
because music is a big part of my
life. I will be in the studio today
mixing for five or six hours and
when I come out of the studio
I mostly drive around with the
windows down and don’t listen
to much music,” he said.
“I listen to the birds in the
trees, actually, and the wind.”
THEY’RE BACK:
Mi-Sex are
touring again
after putting out
their first new
album in 33
years. The band
say recording
material with
new singer Steve
Balbi (below, far
left), was an easy
process.
•Selwyn Sounds will
be held on March 4,
from 11.30am-8.30pm. Tickets
can be purchased via
Ticketek and buyers will be
able to pre-purchase a return
bus ride between pickup
points in Christchurch
or Rolleston and Lincoln

Reduce waste and
save money
In March, the Council is sponsoring two local workshops where you can find out how to reduce
waste and save money when cooking, shopping, and caring for your family.
New Zealand Mum Kate Meads will host the workshops at Rolleston on Saturday 4 March.
Kate brings her own experience with a young baby to the workshop. “We filled our wheelie bin
every week with nappies, food waste, packaging and general household waste,” says Kate. “We
bulk purchased fresh foods and threw loads of it out. We became reliant on disposable products
to save us time but ended up working longer hours to afford a disposable lifestyle.”
Kate realised that eventually her son and grandchildren would have a huge mess to tidy up and
decided to change her habits.
Kate will hold a ‘Food Lover’s Masterclass’ workshop at Rolleston Community Centre on Saturday
4 March from 6-8pm. She will give advice on meal planning, smart shopping and food storage
and use. An average New Zealand household throws out about $563 of food every year, and Kate
will talk about how you can stop wasting money and creating unnecessary waste. The workshop
costs $25 per ticket and you will receive a goodie bag valued at $100 which includes handy
items for minimising waste such as reusable, dishwasher safe food pouches and lunch wrap
alternatives. Bookings are required – to book visit www.wastefreeparenting.co.nz.
Kate will also run a waste free parenting workshop on Saturday 4 March at Rolleston Community
Centre from 10am-12.30pm. The workshop will cover ways to reduce waste in your home, save
money and introduce you to some sustainable household products. Tickets are $25 per person or
$25 per couple, and you receive a goodie bag valued at $100 which includes reusable cloth nappy
samples and other items to minimise waste with babies or young children. To find out more and
book visit www.wastefreeparenting.co.nz. Parents are welcome to bring their children with them.
On the roads this week
Road repairs are planned on Telegraph, Weedons Ross and Leaches Roads, with traffic controls
operating. Road resurfacing is planned on Newtons and Coal Track Roads, with stop/go controls
operating. Footpath repairs are planned on Hasendene Place in Lincoln.
During this week, road surface repairs will occur on
Springston Rolleston Road. Between Broadlands Drive
and Selwyn Road the road will be closed overnight from
7pm until 6am during this period, but open to traffic
during the daytime. During the daytime drivers will need
to reduce speed, and overnight a detour will operate via
Goulds, East Maddisons and Selwyn Road and Selwyn
and Lincoln Rolleston and Lowes Roads.
The new roundabout at the intersection of Kidman,
Byron and Tennyson Streets (right) is now open to traffic.
A small area of footpath on the north west corner is to
be completed following removal of Telecom pillars and
relocation of the boundary fence.
Ongoing works
Work is continuing on the Masefield Drive upgrade with kerb and channel being poured and a new footpath
being constructed. Temporary traffic management is in place – please take care past the work site.
Manse Road roading and stormwater improvement continues. East Maddisons Road is open to
traffic one way only between Ellington Mews and Goulds Road for sewer installation work. Road
reconstruction continues on Gerald Street (between Springs Road and Vernon Drive), with traffic
controls operating.
Christchurch Southern Motorway extension
The passing lane on Main South Road between Rolleston and Weedens Road will be closed from
Monday 20 February for works related to the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2. Trents Road,
between the corner of Blakes Road and 150 Trents Road, is also closed to through traffic, with a detour
operating via Blakes Road and Shands Road.
The closure previously on Weedons Road will be reinstated from Monday 20 February for up to two
weeks. There is no access to Main South Road from Levi Road with a one way system in place.
Port Hills fire information
Fire fighting crews, helicopter and aircraft are continuing to work on
the fire (which started in the Lansdowne area in Selwyn) this week
dampening down hot spots. There remains a risk that changing
weather conditions could cause hot spots to flare up. Thermal
scanning is continuing from the air to help identify hot spots. There
is also heavy machinery being used to create fire breaks around the
perimeter and fell trees. Please continue to stay away from the fire
area as it is still extremely hazardous.
A State of Emergency remains in place in Selwyn and Christchurch.
A total fire ban remains in place until further notice in Selwyn and
includes a ban on all stubble fires.
Christchurch City Council has closed recreation areas of the Port
Hills to the public due to ongoing safety risk. Restricted zones are
for all tracks and open areas in the Port Hills, including Victoria
Park and the Rapaki, Mt Vernon and Huntsbury tracks. Signage is
in place. The restrictions are likely to be in place for several weeks.
Updates on road cordons will be posted on newsline (see below).
A Selwyn Civil Defence recovery team has been established to help
residents with any issues they have due to the fire. The team can be
contacted at recovery@selwyn.govt.nz If you need welfare assistance
please contact 027 556 5748 or email welfare@selwyn.govt.nz
For the latest updates and information on the Port Hills fires see
www.ccc.govt.nz/newsline or follow ‘Christchurch Civil Defence
Emergency Management’ or ‘Selwyn District Council’ on Facebook.
We want to thank the fire fighters and emergency services for their
continued efforts in fighting the fire and thank the community for
their ongoing support.

Praying mantis lurking in Lincoln
Mike Bowie is
an ecologist
who specialises
in entomology
(insects
and other
invertebrates). Each
week he will introduce a
new species found in his
backyard at Lincoln. His
weekly column aims to
raise public awareness of
the variety of living things
around us
THE NEW Zealand praying
mantis (orthodera novaezealandiae)
is a predator that
catches its prey by ambush.
By blending in with its green
surroundings, mantids catch
their unsuspecting prey, such
as flies, by firing their highly
adapted front legs at lightning
speed.
They are distinguished from
the exotic South African praying
mantis by the presence of
a blue/purple circular patch on
the inside of their front legs.
Their egg cases, or oothecae,
are often stuck to fences,
houses or trees exposed to the
sun to aid hatching. Egg cases
are usually 1-2cm long and
are laid in autumn and over
winter until the accumulated
temperature in spring is sufficient
to make the nymphs
hatch.
The nymphs emerge from
the egg case (above left) as the
white waxy seal that protects
the developing nymphs is no
longer visible.
Usually one, but sometimes
two nymphs emerge out of
each hole of the ootheca.
Once the nymphs have all
hatched (by mid-summer),
it is safe to remove these egg
cases from your house, as the
mantids will be busy catching
flies and the like.
NEXT GENERATION: Praying mantis egg
cases can often be found stuck to fences,
houses or trees exposed to the sun.
They are very susceptible to
insecticides so it is best to keep
spraying to a minimum, if at
all.

TOUGH TOIL in the field and
positive, aggressive cricket
earned maximum points for
both Greendale and Sefton in the
third round of the CRV Ambreed
Country Premier two-day cricket
competition.
Greendale started their second
innings, on Saturday, one run
behind Leeston-Southbridge on
the first innings.
Riley Wilson’s score of 47, and
38 from Tig Dalley saw them
through to 150 which set the
combined side exactly 150 to
win.
But they never challenged the
total. Regan Dalley and Haigh
Jebson both bowled superbly,
each snaring three wickets
and earning Greendale a welldeserved
61-run victory.
Sefton, having declared at
347/5 at the end of day one with
a lead of 226, spent a long day
toiling in the field against South
Malvern.
The North Canterbury side
snared two early wickets but
South Malvern batted well to
recover to 192/6 at lunch, with
Mike Pauling and James Ferris
each compiling 70s.
SPORTS
Maximum points for
Greendale and Sefton
Jeff Chapman and Will Wright
came out after lunch and scored
freely putting South Malvern
ahead and assuring Sefton would
have to bat again.
Chapman continued scoring
freely against the tiring Sefton
attack before being removed for
87.
Matt Rowe toiled away all day
bowling 18.3 overs and claiming
4/107.
South Malvern decided to
make a game of it and push for
an unlikely outright win and
declared after 78.3 overs, with an
hour of play still to go and 132
runs ahead. Sixteen overs had to
be bowled before the end of play.
Sefton launched at the target,
with Matt Laffey scoring a quickfire
45.
South Malvern took three
quick wickets and had a sniff of
a win before Pat Croker came to
the crease.
Croker’s lofty hitting took the
game away from South Malvern,
belting 48 before departing just
six runs from victory.
Sefton won the match with an
over to spare.
Day two of the Lincoln v Oxford
and Weedons v Southbrook
matches were washed out.
Thrilling final day likely
HALSWELL ARE hoping for
crucial first innings points
against Heathcote with their
two-day match and chances of
winning the competition in the
balance.
Top of the table Halswell
travelled to Heathcote for their
match against the second placed
side on Saturday.
Heathcote won the toss and
batted first after a delayed start
due to morning rain.
Whichever side finished ahead
after the first innings would secure
two competition points and
with the delayed start, this could
be important with less chance of
an outright result.
Halswell took a wicket in the
first over, and then again in the
seventh over to have Heathcote
wobbling at 25/2.
However, Heathcote then produced
a 100-run partnership to
put them on the front foot with
the score 125/2 and 23 overs left
in the first innings.
Halswell worked hard and after
the 50 overs were up, Heathcote
had scored 256/6 with Matt
Mealings finishing on 120 not
out.
Halswell got off to a flyer with
Geoff Barclay smashing five sixes
before he departed on 43.
Captain Leighton Johnston
(30) and Matt McClintock (22)
took them to 100/1 before both
batsmen got themselves out. At
110/4 Matt Parr started to rebuild

the Halswell innings.
At the end of the day Halswell
were 149-4 after 34 overs, needing
107 runs from 16 overs for
crucial first innings points.
Halswell have some firepower
still to bat but much will depend
on the experience of Parr to get
them over the line.
Johnston said Halswell still
felt confident of pushing on and
walking away with the outright
points in what should be a good
finish next Saturday.
There are two rounds left in the
competition after this match is
completed.

a recipe for Keeping
dogs Healthy
Mastiff breeder and passionate animal
lover Philippa Hanley knows from personal
experience what dogs need to stay healthy
and active – good nutrition. Having realised
that supermarket dog rolls were not providing
her dogs with sufficient nutritional content,
and were not satisfying their hunger either,
eight years ago Philippa decided to start
making her own.
“I took a standard dog roll recipe and made
a meat loaf. I replaced the fillers that are in
supermarket dog rolls with ‘super foods’,”
Philippa says.
These included hemp oil, milk powder, organic
vitamins and minerals and amino acids, all
of which added to the nutritional benefits
provided by the human-grade meat Philippa
used to make the rolls.
Initially feeding her own dogs and supplying
friends with the product, Philippa soon saw
demand growing as people noticed their
dogs’ health and energy improving, and after
having her product nutritionally tested at
Massey University she launched it on to the
market.
Based in Geraldine, Philippa first had the
product made by the local Temuka butcher,
but when demand outstripped the butcher’s
ability to supply, the manufacturing was
passed to Silver Fern Farms.
The meat used in the rolls is mainly lamb,
sometimes venison, plus the nutritionally rich
organ meats from lamb, with no fillers used –
and the dogs love it, says Philippa.
Customers can purchase the dog rolls online
at www.animalessentials.co.nz. They are
available as four-roll packs – 10kg, or eight-roll
packs – 20kg, and they are supplied in 100
per cent recyclable poly bins, ensuring they
are kept cool and fresh until use.
“For a 30kg dog, the cost to feed it is only
$1.20 a day, that’s because the dogs stay full
and don’t feel hungry a couple of hours later,”
says Philippa.
While it is a totally professional operation,
the production of Essentials dog rolls has a
charitable end result, with a large proportion
of the sale proceeds being donated to charity,
such as Canterbury Dog Rescue. Philippa also
supplies product to Dog Watch in Bromley,
Christchurch and the Ashburton SPCA.
With her love for animals and concern for their
welfare, Philippa is also very involved in animal
rescue and the support of free castration to
help prevent dog attacks.

SUNDAY SAW a good
number of entries into
the Ellesmere Champion
of Champion bowls fours
at Southbridge, with six
teams in the men’s section
and five in the ladies.
The winners were the
Lincoln men’s side and the
Leeston ladies’ side.
The men’s trophy was
first presented 100 years
ago.
The Lincoln team
skipped by replacement
Lynton Withell were kept
close by Tai Tapu in the
early play. After seven ends
they were 7-all.
This was even after four
killed ends. Neither skip
were letting it go. The
experience of Withell over
Tai Tapu’s Daniel Harris
would be a factor in the
winning of the game 20-9
after 15 ends.
Earlier in the semi finals,
Lincoln had beaten Leeston
16-9 and Tai Tapu beat
Diamond Harbour 17-8.
The Lincoln team consisted
of Withell, David
Pugh-Williams, Graham
Thiele and Merv Austin.
Both the Diamond Harbour
and Leeston ladies

managed to go one further
than the men and made it
to the final.
After a good win over
Akaroa in the first game
Lincoln stumbled against
Leeston in the semi final,
going down 23-6. In the
other semi-final it was a
much closer game with
Diamond Harbour edging
out Tai Tapu 19-16.
In the final, Leeston
jumped out to at an 8-2

lead before Diamond Harbour
fought back to 11-all.
However, consistent
bowling by the Leeston
ladies got them over the
line going into the last end
14-12. They picked up a
four on the last end to win
18-12.
The Leeston team
consisted of Valami Hantz
(skip), Marion Dixon,
Wendy Tairoara and
Rosita Bone.

Your guide to Show Homes & New Sections
Maintaining a
community feel
in the Selwyn District
Lincoln’s strong agricultural connection began with
it servicing farming. In 1878, Lincoln College was
established and the village, as it is fondly called,
gained world recognition as a rural university town.
For more than 100 years, the town
experienced limited population growth,
with little land developed for housing.
After the Christchurch earthquakes,
more land was opened up and Lincoln’s
population increased significantly
with sub-divisions such as Flemington
offering a community lifestyle for those
re-locating from the city.
Lincoln’s attraction is its quiet
village setting, rural surroundings,
good amenities and close proximity to
Christchurch.
Boutique retail stores cover
giftware, fashion, upmarket butchery,
pharmacy, supermarket, hardware and
a service station. There are also cafés,
restaurants and a wine bar and high
decile schooling – from pre-schools
to university level. There are also
plenty of community amenities with a
library, churches and excellent sporting
facilities. All are a five minute drive
from the housing estates that line the
town’s borders.
“Lincoln has a strong family oriented
community feel,” suggests Shane
Kennedy, developer of Flemington.
Maintaining Lincoln’s character
has been an important goal for those
mapping out Flemington and its success
is evident with young families through
to older people purchasing sections
there.
“Our focus has been to offer a
quieter life for those who will live at
Flemington. Lincoln has always been
a lovely peaceful area to live in. We
wanted to maintain that with a design
that emphasises community and
lifestyle,” says Shane who believes that
Flemington’s blueprint will stand out as
time goes on.
This is reflected in the curved streets
that encourage slow traffic speeds and
lack of through roads, taking away the
potential for people to shortcut through
the sub-division.
There are generous reserves, with
a flexi-paved tennis court, large
playground with basketball court
and field for children to kick a ball;
all centrally sited within the subdivision.
More green space has been
factored into future stages where
an interconnecting walk/cycleway
will allow residents to safely and
conveniently move around their
suburb, and access other parts of
Lincoln.
Plans for a café are also in the
pipeline. This will be sited in the stage
that is currently under completion and
will link Flemington with Rosemerryn.
Section sizes range from 500 to 850
square metres, averaging around 700
square metres. They are priced from
$175,000 to $220,000 with an average
price of $189,000.
Shane believes the sections are at
a good price point, explaining why
Flemington has been well received by
the market with steady sales.
Of the total 620 planned lots, 240
sections have already been sold.
Flemington’s planning and construction
has taken just over three years during
which time five stages have been
completed with the sixth currently
under development.
A further eight stages are planned
for Flemington with Lincoln set to
experience more growth in the years to
come.
Flemington’s planning & construction

Community
& lifestyle
have been

design.

Learn the art of cultivating coriander
CORIANDER CAN be a tricky herb
to grow.
It has a tendency to bolt when it
gets too warm and goes leggy and
straggly when it gets damp.
Once you understand the art to
cultivating this aromatic herb it’s really
not so tricky to grow at all.
First of all you need to find the
right spot to plant it. Coriander prefers
to be in full sun or partial shade.
Growing it in a small pot indoors
– like on your kitchen window isn’t
recommended.
For the best results try planting
your coriander seedlings in a large,
deep pot outside or a sunny, freedraining
area in your garden.
This will prevent your plants
getting damp. For the same reason,
when you water this herb it’s important
to do it in the morning, not the
Tasty peas for children to grow
SUGAR SNAP peas are tasty, easy to grow
and perfect for planting with kids.
Because they’re quick growing they fit
well with the attention spans of children and
they can be eaten straight from the garden.
You don’t need heaps of space to grow
these sweet tasting peas but have something
for them to grow up like a trellis or netting.
Once you’ve got the perfect spot to plant,
dig in a little fertiliser or compost to give the
seedlings a good kick-start.
Then make a little hole and pop a seedling
in. Plant each seedling around 20cm apart
from the next.
Your peas will grow in a pod like beans
and will be ready to harvest in around eight
to 10 weeks.
Not sure if they’re ready? Just taste-test
them.
evening, so it can dry off in the sun
during the day.
Once your plant has got established
remember to eat it quickly.
If it’s not consumed fast enough it
tends to go to seed.
Don’t eat a lot of coriander but still
like to have it on hand? Never fear,
simply stagger your planting of it.
Instead of buying several coriander
plants at once, buy a mixed herb
bundle.
Two to four weeks after you
planted the first coriander, buy another
mixed herb bundle or pot and
do the same.
This means as one plant goes to
seed another will be ready for eating.
Plus you get a wide variety of
other herbs to choose from in your
garden. Each coriander will take
three to four weeks to grow.

gardening without guesswork
Question:
Hi there, I have a question. I’ve received a beautiful hydrangea
as a gift and wonder whether it’s okay to be transplanted into
the garden?
Hydrangeas are making more of a comeback in the
Answer: garden now, with their beautiful burst of colour paired
with their general lower maintenance, they are a great
option in the garden for those that don’t have as much time to spend in the garden,
but still want the colourful display. Your hydrangea can definitely be planted out in the
garden, it will thrive in good soil that has some organic compost and a general garden
fertiliser in it. Before you plant out, make sure that you soak the pot in a bucket of water
to ensure that they root ball is well-hydrated before it goes in the ground. Plant in the
ground at the same level as the pot, in a hole twice the size as the root ball. Pop the
plant in, and cover with the left over soil. Once you have it in the ground, make sure
you give it a water, and keep watering it regularly until it is established in the ground.
Fun facts about Hydrangeas
✓ They’ll handle sun, but flowers last longest and develop better colour in light or
dappled shade.
✓ Keep them watered, the big leaves can dry out quickly during hot weather.
✓ Flower colour is subjective to soil conditions. Blues are intensified by acid conditions, while alkaline
soils favour pink and red shades. To enhance pink shades, apply lime, to encourage blue shades,
apply ammonium or aluminium sulphate or an acid fertiliser. It may take a season or two to see the
results you want, so be patient!

Why should I use
fertiliser?
Fertiliser helps plants to be able to produce fruit, flowers,
and foliage. With vegetables that are “gross feeders” (need
a lot of nutrients to make their produce) you will want to
make sure they have a good supply of fertiliser through
the growing season. It helps to create a healthier plant that
gives you a bigger yield and larger produce.

Add vibrancy to
your outdoor
furniture
Striped canvas in basic colours was
once the norm for outdoor furniture.
Now, a myriad of patterns and colours are
available from vibrant bold hues to muted
tones, allowing you to carry the theme
and colours indoors out to your deck or
patio.
Outdoor chairs, stools and loungers
can all be given a lift, or selected pieces
upholstered in floral, geometric or
striped designs for contrast. Create your
own look or up-date existing furniture.
There are loads of colours and patterns
as well as plain fabrics to choose from,
all scientifically created to cope with the
harsh effects of the sun.
With these fabrics less affected by the
sun and water resistant, you do not need
to worry if your outdoor furniture is left
out over summer, only needing to tuck
them under cover as autumn and winter
bring damper weather.
Maxine at Classic Curtains & Interiors
carries a range of outdoor fabric samples
and has access to an even larger range so
if you have a particular concept in mind
or have seen a fabric you like then she can
help you source it.
Classic Curtains & Interiors also
offer a re-upholstery service so if you
have a favourite chair that you would
like restored for the indoors or outside
then this is an ideal place to visit. The
woodwork can be fixed up, structural
components sorted and the chair reupholstered
(all at the same time) so it
looks brand new again. They also supply
new chairs from small to large whether it
is an armchair, wing chair or dining chair,
along with footstools, headboards and
sofas; all able to be covered in your choice
of fabric.
Currently, Maxine has three new
chairs in store; one with a storage
box underneath making it ideal for a
bedroom. With an outdoor fabric, this
chair could also be used outdoors.
The sun’s UV rays can also affect your
furnishings
indoors,
especially in
summer when the sun is
stronger and up for longer
– fading curtains, drapes
and furniture. As home
furnishings are a serious
investment, they deserve
protection. Voiles and
sunscreen blinds are a great
way to protect your curtains,
carpet and furniture.
Curtain fabrics will also
have a longer life if they
have a block-out or soft
block lining. These protect
curtains from the sun while
also keeping the heat out
in summer, and the heat in
during cooler weather.

New beginnings for
local business owner
A familiar landmark on the southern
highway between Rolleston and Burnham
is soon to close its doors.
Y-Nots first began operating in 1997
with current owner, Linda taking the
business over in August 2015. Since then,
Linda has enjoyed building the business
into a successful outlet selling unique
furniture and homeware.
With big changes happening for Linda
and a pending move with her husband
to the North Island to take up a new
farming position, she has made the hard
call to close Y-Nots’ local retail store and
customers are enjoying the opportunity to
snap up a bargain.
No doubt many Rolleston and Burnham
locals, as well as many regular customers
who travel from all over Christchurch to
hunt out something unique at Y-Nots, will
be disappointed to see this popular store
close.
The closing down sign outside the local
store is not all bad news however, as Linda
plans to continue operating Y-Nots as an
already established Internet business and
she may even open another retail store
further north at some time in the future.
“I’m excited about our new venture but
also sad to be leaving the district,” says
Linda. “I’ve come to know many locals
and build a relationship with our loyal
customers so it will be sad to lose the face
to face contact with these lovely people.”
Existing and new customers are
benefitting from Linda’s pending move,
with stock reduced in price by as much
as 70%. There are still lots of bargains
and with so much stock in storage, Linda
is bringing new items out onto the shop
floor every day. These include: handcrafted
solid wood furniture (from buffets
through to small tables and bookcases),
home décor items, lamps, artwork, wall
art, mirrors, indoor pots from small
to very large, copper statues, incense,
candles, jewellery, artificial flowers
and plants, clocks, cards, cushions,
candleholders, and original hand painted
art on canvas; all unique and something
different.
“Customers have been streaming into
the store to snap up the bargains,” adds
Linda who advises that the final days
of trading will be the middle of March,
providing she has not sold out before that
day; plenty of reasons to regularly call by.
Linda will no longer be offering laybys
or finance with items needing to be
collected within three days of purchase.
Y-Nots, is open from Tuesdays to
Thursdays, 10am-5pm; Fridays 10am-
3pm; and on the weekends from 10am-
4.30pm, at 2239 Main South Road (five

Certification of gas
installations is essential
Gas cooking provides instant and
consistent heat.
In New Zealand, LPG (liquefied
petroleum gas) is used. This needs
sufficient ventilation and to be legal and
fully insured, gas installations must be
set-up by a registered and licensed gas
fitter.
In new homes, gas cylinders/metres are
fitted to the exterior of the home, with gas
fed through pipes to where it is required
indoors. This is undertaken by a qualified
gas fitter who provides certification that
the work meets the legal requirements for
gas in the home and will be required as
part of the Code of Compliance on a new
build.
It is no longer compliant to fit a gas
bottle in a cupboard under a cooktop.
These bottles should now be located
outside and the work required to do this
must be carried out by a certified gas fitter
who will then provide documentation
supporting this, giving peace of mind and
meaning the house is compliant should it
be on sold.
Selwyn Gasfitters are specialists in
gas and plumbing installations and
alterations. They install heat pumps,
gas hobs or ovens, and will relocate a
gas bottle outside. They also service
all brands of fixed and portable gas
appliances and are approved Bosch
service agents.
The added bonus of having Selwyn
Gasfitters on the job is that they can
also take care of the electrical side
of any installations whether it is a
solar system; gas water heating; or a
hydronic underfloor heating system
that uses heat pump, gas or oil fired
boiler to heat the slab.
Selwyn Gasfitters also install patio
gas heating and can connect your
barbecues and other outdoor gas
appliances to your household gas
system so you can draw on a larger gas
supply, taking away the need to rush off
to the local service station every time
the 9kg bottle runs out.
Owner, Glyn Gerrand and his team
at Selwyn Gasfitters, which is a division
of Property Force, are only too happy to
advise you on efficient gas heating options
and suggest units that fit your home’s
aesthetics.

The advantages of solar
Solar energy is said to be the power
source of the future and with technology
improving and costs decreasing, many
people are choosing solar.
For as little as $4,800, solar water
heating can be installed. With the
potential for long-term electricity savings,
many people are selecting solar ready
cylinders so they have the option of
installing solar water heating at any point
in time.
“Many of our customers are delighted
with their electricity savings since having
solar water heating installed, especially
when water heating can account for as
much as 50% of household electricity use,”
suggests Annemarie Duff, Marketing
Manager of Sunshine Solar who believes
that solar also adds value to a property.
When the owner of Sunshine Solar,
John Wilson installed a solar electricity
system in his own home with a family
of six, he saved over $200 in the first few
weeks.
“Our clients quickly see the return
on their investment. They want to live
sustainably and know they are doing the
right thing by taking pressure off the
wider power grid and environment,” says
Annemarie.
New Zealand owned and operated,
Sunshine Solar began in 2003. John
purchased the business in 2005 and it has
been growing steadily ever since.
Based locally in Yaldhurst, the
company has installed over 2,000 solar
systems, in residential and commercial
buildings around New Zealand, and have
undertaken numerous large projects.
An example is the YHA Hostels where
the investment has returned impressive
electricity savings.
Currently, most solar electricity systems
are set up so that excess electricity,
generated during the day is sold back
into the grid through the home owner’s
electricity retailer. With the introduction
of battery storage systems, solar energy
produced during the day is now stored by
battery and used in the household once
the sun goes down.
“Solar water heating is the most popular
because of the instant return however,
as the price of batteries continues to
decrease, the solar electrical systems
will become more viable too,” adds
Annemarie.
“Solar hot water systems are designed
to last twenty years. They require very
little maintenance and have few parts that
are easily replaceable. We do encourage
clients to get regular maintenance checks
however, to make sure the system is
working efficiently.”
Sunshine Solar, have their own team of
registered and suitably qualified plumbers
and trusted electrical contractors who
can take care of installations, repairs and
servicing of solar systems.

Local nursery
embraces changes
When new road alignments impact
on businesses they have two options: to
be overwhelmed by the changes or to
embrace them.
With the southern motorway
being extended through to Rolleston,
established trees along Southern Woods
Nursery’s road frontage have been cleared
and the boundary realigned. This has
presented the forty-strong team at the
nursery with an exciting opportunity to
re-develop and expand the business.
The Southern Woods team have
taken up the challenge, working hard to
restructure the business that will combine
their existing premises with the old
Evergreen nursery site, to form a larger,
purpose built nursery operation.
The new nursery will expand to the
corner of Robinsons and Main South
roads, taking over the old Evergreen
building, which is currently being
extensively renovated.
Southern Woods will soon be operating
from their new premises, accessed from a
new entrance on Robinsons Road. Their
new purpose-built garden centre will
offer an even larger selection of retail
plants, tool and gardening accessories, all
with the same level of expert service that
customers have come to expect. There
will also be new display gardens to inspire
customers.
During this time, Southern Woods
are still open for business in the current
garden centre.
“The retail team are working hard to
ensure a smooth transition between the
two sites which is expected to take place
in a few months’ time. At the moment
it is business as usual,” says Marketing
Manager, Rico Mannall.
A new crop of summer plants is
coming through and a good selection of
perennials and flowering plants that will
add colour to the garden, are already in
stock. They also have their new crops of
New Zealand natives that are perfect for
late summer/early autumn planting.
With many people now keen on
planting edibles, Southern Woods’
selection of fruit trees, berry vines,
fruits like the very popular Feijoas or
Chilean Guavas with their lovely sweet
berries, and pip fruits such as apples
and pears, are all worth checking out.
There is also a good variety of stone fruit
including plums, which typically do well
in Canterbury conditions, along with
apricots and peaches.
Citrus fruits are ripening
at this time of year too.
Whether it is juicy lemons
or limes you want to add to a
glass of water or for cooking,
or oranges and mandarins to snack on,
Southern Woods have them in stock.
With autumn almost here, it is a good
time to plant shrubs and trees in the
garden, as long as irrigation is in place.
A little forward planning will mean this
task is in hand with Southern Woods’
massive selection of natives, of all shapes
and sizes (including exotics), allowing you
to add plenty of colour and character to
your garden.
The new Southern Woods site with

Ensuring a safe work place
Learning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe
work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the
wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that
in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues,
but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or
on to the sports field?
not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place
can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators
does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy
machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance
service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid
course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social.
take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high
risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that
they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability
to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course
of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium
risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a
spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight
hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and
26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries,

hypothermia and poisonings.
The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in
fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most
common place for injuries to happen. new Zealand children
are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in
australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents
or falls in the home. fatalities from leisure and sport are not far
behind those in the workplace.
The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard
6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk
environments. This course covers many of the skills required to
deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result
in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes
such as motor vehicle accidents.
if you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask
your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the
course content and give you options that will best suit your needs.
Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your
location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is
up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where
it is located.
