Top softball honours
• By Tom Doudney
TWO SELWYN teenagers
have been chosen in the
New Zealand under 17
softball squad.
Lincoln’s Josh Brown,
15, and Rolleston’s Caleb
Stewart, 15, will attend
training camps in April,
September and a third yet
to be determined date.
Competitive games are yet
to be scheduled.
They were selected
after representing the
Canterbury under 17
team at a tournament in
Auckland last month.
Josh, who plays for the
Halswell club, has also
represented Canterbury in
baseball and touch rugby.
Last season he was also
short-listed for the New
Zealand under 15 softball
and baseball squads but
had to withdraw from
IRONMAN EVENT
Tai Tapu’s Shirley Rolston, Ladbrooks’
Simon Huntley and Rolleston’s Brett
Bothma will compete in the 33rd Kellogg’s
Nutri-Grain Ironman New Zealand event
in Taupo on Saturday. The field is expected
to include more than 1200 competitors
from more than 40 countries. They will
race for a prize purse of $115,000, split
evenly between men and women.
Caleb
Stewart
financial commitments
being too much.
Caleb, who plays for
the Albion club, was
vice-captain of the under
15 New Zealand softball
side which played in
Australia’s Queensland
State Championships last
year, finishing second. He
SPORTS
was also shortlisted for
the New Zealand under 15
baseball squad last year but
pulled out due to softball
commitments.
Both Josh and Caleb
come from single-parent
families and meeting
the costs associated with
travelling and other
aspects of being part of
the team is expected to be
difficult.
Josh and Caleb’s parents
are hoping to attract
sponsorship or donations.
They are looking into
holding a fundraising
event and setting up an
online page for donations.
In the interim anyone
wishing to help can email
