Rolleston volunteer firefighter Dan Ohs was among many Selwyn firefighters who 

battled the huge blaze in the Port Hills. Through sheer grit, determination, skill and

THE PROPOSED use of Central 

Plains Water Scheme water to 

increase flows in the Selwyn River 

is likely to go ahead. 

However, one of the remaining 

questions is how the project would 

be funded. 

On Wednesday, the zone committee 

led a workshop at the 

Lincoln Event Centre to progress 

its campaign on making Coes Ford 

swimmable again. About 80 people, 

including farmers and environmentalists, 

turned up. 

The zone committee has agreed 

in principle to look into augmenting 

the Selwyn River’s flow with 

CPW water. 

Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee 

chairman Allen Lim said most 

people at the workshop had been 

positive about the idea. 

“One of the pipes essentially has 

to cross the Selwyn River anyway 

so we thought we would just take 

an off-take from there,” he said. 

“It’s yet to be totally confirmed 

but given the level of interest, the 

likelihood of that project going 

ahead is much higher.” 

There were several parties which 

would have to come together and 

reach agreement to make it happen 

but he declined to comment further 

on who that would involve. 

“It’s about funding and who pays 

for what,” Mr Lim said. 

“This Swimmable Selwyn 

initiative has actually gone past 

ECan and I think even central 

Government is probably talking 

about it.” 

It comes at a time when the river 

at Coes Ford has dried up apart 

from a couple of algae covered 

pools.

THE GOOD news is the weather 

looks perfect for the big rock 

concert at Lincoln on Saturday. 

Mr Google told me yesterday it 

will be 19 deg C and there will be 

no precipitation – that’s rain for 

those who don’t know. 

Which means great concertgoing 

conditions; warm but not 

too hot and no worries about it 

getting wet. 

The organisers, who are local, 

have done a cracker job on this. 

There’s plenty of car parking 

at Lincoln High School and the 

streets leading into the venue, 

and there’s a bus service too (see 

page 5). 

Bringing a big concert like this 

to Selwyn is no mean feat. 

And the music? No complaints

THE LITTLE Rakaia Boating 

Club is seeking funding to 

repair a ramp, breakwater and 

surrounding foreshore area 

which they say is vital to the 

community. 

A breakwater and viewing 

platform next to the ramp at 

Rakaia Huts was wrecked in 

a 2008 flood. The wreckage 

still sits in the water beside the 

ramp it was supposed to protect 

and the adjacent riverbank 

has continued to wash away. 

Ideally, the club would like 

to get the area fixed before the 

World Jet Boat Marathon in 

October as some of the event 

takes place on the Rakaia 

River. 

Little Rakaia Boating Club 

president Graeme Patterson 

said it was the only registered 

boat ramp providing access to 

the sea between Timaru and 

Akaroa and was an important 

place for search and rescue 

operations and training. 

It was also a popular recreation 

area. 

“The boat ramp and foreshore 

is there for the use of 

everyone, it’s not solely for the 

boat club members,” Mr Patterson 

said. 

The cost would be established 

once plans were drawn 

up but could be more than 

$100,000 and the club did not 

have the ability to fund the 

project itself. 

About $100,000 raised by the 

boating club and community 

over recent years had already 

been spent on sheet piling and 

hardfill to secure the ramp and 

breakwater. 

District councillors have 

asked staff to produce a report 

for their February 8 meeting 

on the possibility of providing 

funding for the project as part 

of the 2017/2018 Annual Plan.

Freedom campers contribute

Freedom 

camping may 

be a new term used heavily 

by mainstream media, but its 

concept is not new. 

Grandad has been taking 

his grandkids camping for 

overnight fishing trips at Lake 

Coleridge for years, boys have 

gone camping with mates, as 

a rite of passage, since forever 

and families have camped on 

the sides of lakes or rivers for all 

summers past. 

When I have raised this in 

forums lately I have had Trumplike 

responses going something 

along the lines of: “Yes but Kiwis 

are more responsible than overseas 

campers.” Or: “I know I am 

responsible but these overseas 

people are not.” 

I think if you talk to the likes 

of Sally Quickfall, the Tasman 

District Council enforcement 

officer who has been verbally 

abused and spat on by Kiwis at 

freedom camping hot spots, she 

would disagree with such sentiments. 

The unintended consequences 

(at least I hope they were), by 

councils all around the country 

blanket banning ‘freedom campers’ 

has meant those wonderful 

pastimes mentioned above have 

become unsavoury or illegal and 

that is pretty sad. But in reality, 

an immigration based ‘Kiwis 

only’ policy would be even 

worse. 

Please don’t think I am against 

doing something to improve the 

situation in our towns and rural 

areas, I am supportive of meaningful 

and sensible solutions. 

It is disgusting that a camper 

defecates on a public building or 

uses a private camping ground’s 

facilities for free by sneaking in. 

A recent study reported by the 

Ministry of Business Innovation 

and Employment showed that 

international freedom campers 

spent on average $6961 per trip 

in 2015, compared to backpackers 

who spent on average $4808 

per trip. An international visitor 

who does neither of the above 

only spent on average $3212, 

less than half that of a freedom 

camper. Overall it is estimated 

that international freedom 

campers spent $304 million in 

2015. 

While acknowledging they 

probably stayed longer than 

your average tourist it is important 

to note that they are 

significant contributors to our 

economy. 

I hope, that when councils 

consider what to do, we all look 

past the emotions, rhetoric and 

headline-grabbing stories and 

concentrate on sensible solutions 

that benefit our environment, 

our pastimes and our economy. 

Harvey Polglase, of 

Darfield, writes about the 

district council’s plans to 

consult Darfield and Kirwee 

residents on whether a 

reticulated sewer network 

is needed in the area 

Given that the existing septic 

tank system in Darfield presents 

neither a detrimental effect on 

the environment or public health, 

and gives no indication of likely 

future problems, the suggestion 

that we need a reticulated system 

should be quickly abandoned. 

With the individual septic 

tanks disposing of small volumes 

of effluent over a widely dispersed 

area, it makes no environmental 

sense to transport all of this 

waste to one site where the nitrate 

and phosphate loadings are then 

going to require some means of 

disposal after treatment. 

A major factor will be the cost 

of the scheme – those on fixed 

incomes will find the proposed 

$23,000 connection fee an impossible 

cost. There will also be 

an ongoing rates requirement for 

operation which presumably will 

be in the vicinity of the cost for 

water supply, so adding another 

couple of hundred dollars to the 

annual rates bill. 

The track record of community 

sewerage schemes in New 

Zealand is patchy – Mangawhai 

in Northland escalated from $36 

million to $53 million, Wanganui 

has had major problems and 

costs associated with its scheme. 

The short answer is obviously 

‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’

community to see Coes Ford 

swimmable again. 

Higher flows would help flush 

nutrients through instead of 

concentrating them at Coes 

Ford. 

CPW water would likely 

be used to augment the river 

between later autumn and early 

spring. The water would top up 

groundwater first before flowing 

into the river. 

“It could take a year to fill up, 

we just don’t know,” Mr Lim 

said.

increasing the flow of the Selwyn 

would also simply flush the nutrients 

down to Te Waihora/Lake 

Ellesmere and the sea where they 

would also cause problems. 

A CPW spokeswoman said 

the augmentation plan was a 

council-led process. 

“CPW is here to help and to 

try and be a part of that,” she 

said. 

Last week the Government announced 

a target of 90 per cent 

of the country’s rivers and lakes 

being swimmable by 2040.

WHAT MAY be the South 

Island’s biggest pre-school, in 

terms of land area, has opened 

in Rolleston. 

An official opening for Blossoms 

Educare Rolleston was 

held last week and children are 

expected to start attending soon, 

once a licence from the Ministry 

of Education is granted. 

The 6000 sq m pre-school 

has an outdoor playing area 

of 3500 sq m. Director Baljit 

Grewal said it was believed to be 

the largest in the South Island, 

although that was yet to be 

confirmed. 

It was good being able to 

provide such a large area for 

children to play outdoors in. 

“Not everywhere do you have 

the luxury of such a big space 

being available,” Mr Grewal 

said. 

It will be licensed for up to 130 

children but initially is expected 

to start with between 20 and 30. 

Mr Grewal said the official 

opening had gone very well and 

they were looking forward to 

children arriving on site.

The Warehouse Group set to open 

three new stores in Rolleston

hree of The Warehouse Group brands are set to 

open as part of the new Rolleston development 

at 15 Masefield Drive. 

The Warehouse, Warehouse Stationery and Noel 

Leeming will open their doors in late 2017, providing 

the community with access to a wide range of 

products in up to 7,200sqm of floor space. 

Bought in 2014, the site is being jointly developed by 

Eldamos Investments and Rolleston Retail Limited 

and will include the three stores amongst a range of 

other new outlets planned for the site. 

The Warehouse and Warehouse Stationery CEO 

Pejman Okhovat says “The Warehouse store has 

been designed as a modernised, one-stop family 

shopping destination and will be double the size of the 

existing store in Rolleston; offering the community 

access to a wider complement of products, including 

a garden centre.” 

“Warehouse Stationery will provide customers with 

a range of stationery, art and craft, and technology 

devices, as well as print and copy services,” he says. 

Jeff Vesey, leasing agent for Rolleston Retail says in 

addition to The Warehouse Group stores, there will 

be a range of retail, service and health tenants. 

“Pent up demand for Rolleston retail space has seen 

high levels of enquiry including close to 40 food 

operators vying for the five food spaces available,” 

said Mr Vesey.

Canterbury firefighters 

battling the big blaze 

in the Port Hills. He 

spoke to Tom Doudney 

about what it was like 

fighting the fire, his day 

job with St John, and 

how he became so 

heavily involved with 

emergency services 

So you’re with both the 

Rolleston fire brigade and St 

John? 

I’m a member of the Rolleston 

Volunteer Fire Brigade and also 

a paid employee for St John 

ambulance. I’m not attached to 

the local Rolleston ambulance 

station, I’m an intensive care 

paramedic and I head up the 

clinical team for St John nationally. 

I’ve got a response capable 

vehicle allocated to me as part of 

my role so while I don’t crew the 

local ambulance I commonly get 

called out from home to support 

them.

What was your involvement 

with the recent Port Hills fire, 

were you with the Rolleston 

brigade fighting the fire? 

On the Wednesday night I 

attended the fire – that was the 

night that was particularly challenging. 

I initially went up to 

Worsleys Spur for a short time 

and then we were tasked to protect 

the houses at Kennedys Bush 

where we spent about three and a 

half hours working alongside the 

helicopters to stop the fire on the 

hillside from coming down to the 

houses. It became clear probably 

an hour after nightfall that the 

area behind Kennedys Bush was 

very well controlled. There were 

a couple of areas up there that 

were still burning but they were 

a long way from houses so we got 

reallocated to go and check Westmorland. 

We left a police officer 

up there who was monitoring the 

fires who would have called us 

back if we were needed but they 

were a long way away from any 

structures and a long way up the 

hill from what we could reach 

with our equipment. We were 

in there until maybe 12.30pm 

and then we were sent back to 

Rolleston as they got into a phase 

of just holding what they had 

overnight rather than actively 

fighting it. 

What was it like at its height 

on Kennedys Bush? 

We managed to get a local bulldozer 

driver to put a fire break 

in between the houses and the 

hillside. The fire probably got to 

within 30m of the houses and we 

managed to stop it there which 

was really good. It was a great big 

wide hillside and we were limited 

to where we could get our hoses 

to, we couldn’t get our truck in 

there and we were worried about 

our ability to exit really fast. So 

we got a lot of support from helicopters 

in the first few hours in 

getting to things that we couldn’t 

get to which was really cool. 

How big were the flames at 

that point? 

Because we had mainly grass 

where we were, we had a fast 

moving fire but it wasn’t massive 

flames right there. In the areas 

surrounding us, where you could 

see the trees and certainly in 

Worsleys Rd, there were very 

impressive flames, maybe 20m or 

30m high.

Is the Port Hills fire the 

biggest you have been to? 

The common chat amongst 

the firefighters was that it was 

the biggest that any of us had 

ever been to – I have been in the 

Rolleston brigade for 17 years 

and it was by far the biggest for 

me. It was also a very different 

type of fire behaviour to what we 

are used to. There were a number 

of paid staff and Rural Fire guys 

who have fought similar fires in 

the United States and Australia 

but in the main none of us had 

experienced something like that 

in Canterbury. 

How did you feel about the 

support the firefighters received 

from the community? 

That was very cool and humbling. 

The brigade was donated 

beer, soft drink and baking and 

there were thank you letters. A 

number of kids from Clearview 

Primary School made cards 

which were dropped off and we 

reciprocated by giving them an 

old fire brigade helmet with a 

message of thanks on it. 

With St John, how often do 

you get called out to support 

ambulance? 

It varies, typically it would 

be a couple of times a week. 

Normally it is because they need 

some support with intensive care

paramedic level interventions 

or because the local ambulances 

have all been tasked to other jobs 

and I can get to an incident [in 

Selwyn] significantly faster than 

a town ambulance can. 

How often do you get called 

out with the Fire Service? 

With the Rolleston brigade, one 

out of every four weeks you will 

be on call. During the busy period 

you can get called out eight 

or nine times a week, whereas 

during the quiet period, which is 

winter for us, you just get one or 

two jobs a week. 

I know the fire brigade get 

called out to accidents and 

things as well. Do you ever gets 

called out twice with both fire 

and ambulance? 

At times I can be paged by 

both fire and ambulance. The 

most common example would 

be a motor vehicle crash. What I 

tend to do is go to the fire station, 

make sure the guys know I am 

going and there is someone else 

able to crew the truck. I will normally 

just go to the scene in my 

car and do the patient care and 

I am there if my fire crew needs

some support as well. 

When you say that you get 

called out to support ambulance 

staff sometimes, is that because 

you have quite specific skills 

that not all staff would have? 

Yes. Relative to the crews that 

are normally on crew in Selwyn 

I have a range of drugs and skills 

which I can use which it isn’t 

common for us to use. 

You would attend a number 

of serious incidents throughout 

the year. How do you personally 

handle that? Is it difficult, or are 

you used to it? 

I don’t think you ever get used 

to it. I think if you get used to it 

you run the risk of not having 

the empathy which is required to 

attend the incident and comfort 

both patients and their families. 

The best method for debriefing 

that I find, and it’s very personal 

for anyone, is to talk to your 

colleagues and to talk to family. 

Both St John and the Fire Service 

provide us with peer support options 

– people you can phone up 

confidentially if you don’t want 

to talk to your local people, and 

you can talk to without talking to 

someone who you know. 

Have you had previous jobs 

before working full-time since 

emergency services? 

I have been with St John since 

I was in my early 20s and prior 

that I was just sort of studying 

and doing bits and pieces jobs 

like pumping gas and working 

at sawmills and things. I became 

involved with emergency services 

when I moved out to Rolleston 

and had no conception that there 

was this thing called volunteer 

firemen. I was working at the 

local petrol station and made this 

association between this funny 

air raid siren going off and the 

fact the fire truck was going past 

every time that it did. When 

one of the guys from the brigade 

came in, in uniform, I asked him 

about it and he said come down 

and have a look. So I went down 

and the guy who was in charge of 

the brigade at that point, Glenn 

Cockburn, also worked for ambulance. 

I joined the fire brigade 

and then he encouraged me to 

start volunteering with St John.

Ellesmere College assembly 

celebrates students’ success 

ELLESMERE COLLEGE has 

celebrated the success of 

its students in last year’s 

NCEA exams with a special 

assembly. 

Academic blues were awarded 

to the top-achieving students. 

To gain an academic blue, students 

must gain a minimum of 

50 NCEA excellence credits. 

Overall, 30 students gained an 

excellence endorsement qualifying 

them for an academic blue. 

In addition, 33 students gained 

merit endorsements and the overall 

pass rates for levels 1, 2 and 3 

were above the national averages.

His column aims to 

raise public awareness 

of biodiversity, the 

variety of living things 

around us 

WETA ARE New Zealand’s 

insect icons and as many as 120 

species are known here. 

They are close relatives to 

crickets and grasshoppers, and 

are flightless. Most weta are vegetarians, 

eating leaves and berries 

but may also eat small insects. 

One weta species that most 

people have in their backyard are 

cave weta. 

Contrary to their name, not 

all cave weta live in caves. Rather 

they live in cool, dark, moist 

places and come out to feed or 

look for a mate at night. 

They have large antennae to 

help sense their way around and

Females have what looks like 

a ‘stinger’ at their rear. This is 

actually an egg-laying appendage

under bark, in cracks or holes of 

trees. 

Artificial refuges called weta 

motels can be constructed to 

encourage them into the garden, 

where this weta was found.

Lincoln targets gumboot 

throwing world record 

IT IS hoped about 500 people 

will bring their gumboots 

along to Lincoln University this 

morning to help set a Guinness 

World Record. 

The Lincoln University 

Students’ Association will 

try to set the world record for 

the number of people taking 

part in a gumboot throwing 

competition. 

Lincoln is looking to take 

the record back from Massey 

University which claimed it last 

year with 478 people involved. 

Lincoln had previously set the 

record in 2013 with 348. 

Association vice-president 

Tessa Williams said it was 

hoped 500 people would take 

part in The Great Gumboot Toss 

event, which is due to take place 

today at 11am on the university 

sports’ fields. 

“Everyone is welcome. We 

have it set up through Guinness 

World Records so it will be 

official,” Ms Williams said. 

“There will a chance to have a 

bit of practice around 10.30am 

and afterwards there will be the 

South Island gumboot throwing 

championships, so if you find 

a bit of hidden talent you could 

have a go at that.” 

Distance was not important 

for the record attempt. 

“We all just get together and 

give it a hurl,” Ms Williams 

said.

Southbridge on Sunday. 

Hantz won the women’s 

singles against Diamond 

Harbour’s Pauline Smith 

21-14 in the final. The 

previous weekend she 

skipped the Leeston fours 

to victory. 

Hantz made a good start 

to the day with a good win 

over Melva Parke from 

Akaroa in the first round 

21-6. 

The semi-final against 

Lincoln’s Avis Gill was a 

much closer game that saw 

Hantz come back from being 

8-0 down to win 21-18 

before going onto claim the 

title.

by Tai Tapu’s Peter Udy. 

He defeated Akaroa’s Bill

Top softball honours 


TWO SELWYN teenagers 

have been chosen in the 

New Zealand under 17 

softball squad. 

Lincoln’s Josh Brown, 

15, and Rolleston’s Caleb 

Stewart, 15, will attend 

training camps in April, 

September and a third yet 

to be determined date. 

Competitive games are yet 

to be scheduled. 

They were selected 

after representing the 

Canterbury under 17 

team at a tournament in 

Auckland last month. 

Josh, who plays for the 

Halswell club, has also 

represented Canterbury in 

baseball and touch rugby. 

Last season he was also 

short-listed for the New

The newly-formed Waikirikiri Sport club 

will hold a public information meeting on 

Thursday, 7-8pm, at the Rolleston Community 

Centre Lounge. The club has been 

set up to foster hockey in eastern Selwyn 

initially, although it will eventually focus 

on a wider range of sports. It has had more 

than 100 people complete registrations of 

interest.

Explore colour with Science Alive 

Science Alive! is visiting local libraries to host fun sessions for kids 

where they can learn about the science of colour and experiment 

with coloured inks. The ‘Colourful Chromatography’ sessions are 

from 3.30-4.30pm at: 

· Lincoln Library on Monday 6 March 

· Leeston Library on Tuesday 7 March 

· Darfield Library on Wednesday 8 March 

· Rolleston Library on Thursday 9 March 

The sessions are free and are suitable for 5 to 10 year olds, but

The new Youth Council includes four returning members from the previous Youth Council. Kusal 

Ekanayake (20, Springs ward), Paige Sullivan (16, Selwyn Central), Harrison Crossley (16, Springs 

ward) and Ella McClure (17, Ellesmere ward) will continue their role in the new Youth Council.

In late January the new Youth Council members took part in a fun team building exercise at 

Christchurch Adventure Park where they took part in a zip-lining challenge. The Youth Council is 

also looking forward to visiting the YMCA Wainui Park camp on Banks Peninsula in March for an 

Orientation weekend. 

A chair for the Council will be appointed by the group mid-year, with Kusal Ekanayake and Paige 

Sullivan acting as Co-Chairs until that time. 

“New Zealand values its young people, and makes wonderful investments in youth. It’s up to us 

to respond proactively to the opportunities our community provides for us. The voice of youth has 

so much to offer, and it’s my privilege to channel those ideas and energy,” says new Youth Council 

member Gabriel Clarke. 

“I am excited to liaise with the youth of our community and become familiar with their opinions 

and passions about issues facing Selwyn. It’s a privilege to communicate this to the Council, 

aiming to make Selwyn a community where youth can thrive and flourish,” he adds. 

“Our Youth Council is a reminder that Selwyn is full of great young people who are keen to 

contribute to our community. I look forward to working with them and seeing them develop over 

the year,” says Mayor Sam Broughton.

Helping those affected by the Port Hills fires 

Selwyn District Council’s welfare and recovery team has been visiting the homes of Selwyn residents 

affected by the Port Hills fire and offering assistance. 

Early last week, Selwyn households who had been evacuated from their homes were able to return 

and the Council’s welfare team along with the Mayor visited around 60 properties. People visited were 

provided with information and advice around health and welfare issues and contact details for a range 

of organisations who can offer help.

you would like to make a donation to help Selwyn families affected by the fires or to help helicopter pilot 

Steve Askin’s family please visit www.selwyn.govt.nz for information on how to do this. 

Firefighters and civil defence volunteers from across Selwyn and New Zealand have been assisting 

with the fire response. The fire operation is continuing this week. Although the fire is now controlled 

there are still many hotspots within the fire perimeter which could potentially ignite. The focus of the fire 

operation is on reducing the number of hotspots and reducing the fire risk associated with any unburnt 

vegetation by creating fire breaks or burning vegetation. Drones are being used to provide thermal 

imaging showing hotspot locations. 

During the fires, the Council’s emergency alert system called Selwyn Gets Ready was used to send 

warnings and advice to Selwyn households via emails and texts. If you would like to sign up for this free 

service please visit selwyn.getsready.net and select ‘join.’ 

On the roads this week 

Preseal road repairs are planned Hoskyns, Telegraph and Downs 

Roads. Road repairs are also planned on Curve and Leaches 

Roads. Traffic controls will operate at all sites. 

Road resurfacing is planned on Weedons Ross and Coaltrack 

Roads, with stop/go controls operating. Footpath repairs are 

planned on Hasendene Place in Lincoln. Work continues to install 

kerb and channel on Masefield Drive and add a new footpath 

(pictured). Traffic controls are in place – please take care. 

Manse Road roading and stormwater improvement work continues. 

East Maddisons Road is now open to traffic both ways with traffic 

controls operating. Road reconstruction continues on Gerald Street, 

with traffic controls operating. 

Road closure – Dynes Road 

From Wednesday 1 March until the end of March, Dynes Road will 

be closed to traffic from the intersection with Springston Rolleston 

Road to about 150 metres from this intersection. The closure is to 

extend a sewer main along the road. On Selwyn Road near Cross 

Road sewer installation work will also take place, with the road 

remaining open but traffic is asked to take care near this location. 

Christchurch Southern Motorway extension 

The passing lane on Main South Road between Rolleston and 

Weedons Road is closed for works related to the Christchurch 

Southern Motorway Stage 2. On Weedons Road there is currently 

no access to Main South Road from Levi Road with a one way 

system in place.

DUNSANDEL WATER OUTAGE 

An upgrade to the existing 

pipework at the Dunsandel 

water pumpstation is planned. 

For this to occur a shutdown

FLUSH YOUR TAPS 

Some plumbing fittings have 

the potential to allow minute 

traces of metals to accumulate 

in water standing in the fittings 

for several hours. Although 

the health risk is small, the 

Ministry of Health recommends 

that you flush a mugful of 

water from your drinking-water 

tap each morning before use 

to remove any metals that 

may have dissolved from the 

plumbing fittings. 

We are recommending this 

simple precaution for all 

households, including those 

on public and private water 

supplies. This notice has

CAPSICUM 

Confusion reigns where capsicum 

‘colours’ are concerned but the 

general rule is that capsicums are 

ready to harvest when they have 

turned the colour specified for 

the variety planted. 

So, if you want the sweetest, 

fullest-flavoured capsicum you 

can get your hands on, don’t 

pick it until it’s the colour of the 

vegetable on the seed packet 

you sowed it from or the label 

of the seedling you popped

green capsicum can be either an 

immature capsicum yet to change 

colour or a fully-mature green 

capsicum (if that was the colour 

variety you grew). 

On its way to being the colour 

you aimed to grow, the capsicum 

(unless it’s a strictly green variety) 

will generally (but not always) 

change from green to yellow and 

then to red. 

One thing that’s not so difficult 

to get your head around, however, 

is that the longer a capsicum 

stays on the plant, the sweeter it 

will be. Conversely, if you pick 

it before it’s mature it may even 

have an almost bitter flavour, 

or (in the best-case scenario) 

be almost tasteless. Another 

guideline for picking at maturity 

is to go by size (once again, refer 

to the plant label or seed packet 

for a guide as not all fruit is the 

same size on maturity). 

When choosing a fruit to pick, 

let colour and size be your main 

guides but also gloss and weight. 

Perfectly ripe capsicums have a 

vivid colour and their skins are 

glossy and never dull. Dullness 

indicates over-ripeness and any 

wrinkles in a dull skin suggest 

that the flesh of the fruit may 

even be mushy. Gently weighing 

the capsicum in your cupped 

hand to test for readiness also 

helps determine maturity. If 

perfectly mature, the capsicum 

should feel heavy for its size. 

If you do happen to pick an 

immature fruit, it is unlikely to 

mature in storage or even when 

placed on a sunny window ledge. 

Of course, any capsicum is a 

good capsicum where preserving 

is concerned, and while you may 

not wish to snap-freeze less-thanperfect 

fruits, there is no reason

why they cannot be chopped 

into pickles and relishes, or even 

stuffed and baked. 

Perhaps the one exception to 

the mature harvesting guide is 

when you want to encourage 

more flowers to develop. Picking 

peppers before they are totally 

mature will encourage more 

flowers and therefore, eventually, 

more fruit, so it’s a case of deciding 

what’s best for your circumstances. 

With several plants growing, you 

should be able to have your cake 

(or in this case, capsicum), and eat 

it, too. 

When it comes to actually 

harvesting capsicums, use 

scissors and snip so that a stem 

remains attached to the fruit. 

Never tug the fruit off or you’ll 

damage the plant. Green peppers 

will store (uncut) in the fridge for 

one to three weeks while uncut 

coloured peppers will store for 

one to two weeks. 

BUSH AND CLIMBING 

BEANS 

The most popular summerharvest 

beans in New Zealand 

are the green and yellow French 

dwarf varieties (also known 

as ‘bush’ or ‘snap’ beans and 

sometimes to be found in purple) 

and climbing beans. There are a 

number of varieties of climbing 

beans, but they can be generally 

divided into two categories: 

climbing French (or ‘snap’) style 

and scarlet runners (a flatpodded 

climber bean more suited 

to cool climates). 

All bean plants will be 

encouraged to produce more fruit 

by regular picking, a practice 

that also thins out the pods and 

encourages air circulation (beans 

are notorious for developing 

fungal rot). Snap varieties should 

be picked when the pods are not 

more than 10cm long (dwarf 

varieties) or 20cm long (climbing 

varieties).

to sow new lawns, and repair existing ones. Here are some tips for the different tasks at hand! 

Preparing a new lawn 

You can prepare new lawns now. Ensure you 

have prepared your ground well, this is your 

base for a quality lawn so you want to get

Although there is little need 

for stringing beans nowadays, 

picking after the beans are 

past maturity does mean their 

skins are more fibrous and less 

palatable. Always snip the beans 

off with kitchen scissors or (if 

you have the finger nails for it!) 

nip through the stems with a 

sharp pinch. 

Scarlet runner beans are a 

different ‘animal’ altogether. 

While beans left to mature on 

the plant can be podded, and 

the ‘old style’ way of harvesting 

is to let the beans grow as long 

as possible and then stew them, 

gardeners in-the-know will be 

sure to pick the beans when they 

are no more than 15-20cm long 

and when the pods are still flat 

and tender. Used at this stage, 

they are every bit as delicious 

as snap beans, especially when 

sliced finely (lengthways) and 

sautéed in butter or blanched 

and served cooled with a sweet 

vinaigrette. 

Picking of any bean plant 

needs to be regular and frequent 

(more than once a week in good 

growing conditions). If you miss 

any pods and the seeds within 

develop fully, the beans can 

always be podded and used that 

way but be aware that allowing 

fruit to mature will slow down 

the plant’s production. Its aim, 

after all, is not supply you with 

beans but, rather, to grow fruit, 

set seed, and then shut up shop 

for the season!

in the garden. 

Exceptionally unsettled 

weather has occurred in all parts 

of New Zealand with extremes 

of heat, wind and rain. Regardless 

of this, February is still a 

significant month for harvesting 

crops and reaping the benefits of 

your hard work both in the home 

orchard and vegetable garden. 

Summer salad vegetables should 

be at their peak this month. Ensure 

plants are regularly watered to 

maintain healthy growth, especially 

cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce 

and radishes. Other typical summer 

veges include beans (climber 

and dwarf), aubergines, courgettes, 

beetroot, corn, onions, peppers 

and pumpkin, and should all be 

ready to harvest. 

Remove any plants that have 

cropped and finished for the season 

to provide room for winter 

vegetables (broccoli, brussels 

sprouts, cabbages and cauliflower) 

which can now be planted 

to mature in the early winter. 

Consider saving seed from your 

favourite summer vegetables, 

particularly beans and tomatoes. 

Late season peaches and plums 

are now maturing, and apples 

and pears are beginning to ripen, 

particularly early varieties such 

as gala. Fruit are now forming on 

citrus trees (ripening in mid-

new plants. You can also gather 

leaves for drying which is easy 

to do. Simply place the leaves in 

a shallow tray in a dry, sunny, 

sheltered position. Leave them 

for about two to three weeks, 

which should be sufficient time 

for drying.

of display for summer annuals

months, like cosmos, marigolds, 

petunias, salvias, portulacas and 

zinnias. Plant ‘potted colour’ to

opens in Rolleston 

The official visits are over and Blossoms 

Educare will soon welcome their first 

Rolleston students. The children will also be 

the preschool educator’s first South Island 

students. 

This will be great news for the many 

families who have been enquiring about 

Rolleston’s newest early childhood 

educational facility, and for those moving 

into the area; especially as many other 

centres have already reached capacity. 

“Since last year, we’ve had over one 

hundred enquiries for our new Rolleston 

preschool,” advises Rolleston Centre 

Manager, Barbara Ludlow. 

Throughout the country, Blossoms 

Educare has over 670 children including 

157 under-2 years old. They already have 

eight centres located around Auckland with 

more being built throughout the country, 

including at Rangiora, in Auckland and 

another in Rolleston near Lemonwood 

Grove School. 

“The success of Blossoms Educare is, we 

believe a result of the symbiotic relationships 

between parents, children and community,” 

suggests Sarabjit Sidhu, Operations Manager 

of Blossoms Educare. 

The team at Blossoms Educare work with 

families to ensure that all children enjoy 

a wonderful preschool experience that 

allows them to learn and grow. While the 

Te Whāriki, New Zealand early childhood 

curriculum is followed, their philosophy, 

vision and goals also promote family and the 

local community. 

The teaching programme sits alongside 

the children’s own disposition where their 

ideas and passions are explored. If the topic 

is transport then the areas the children are 

interested in are identified and research 

conducted such as transport used in 

building. This helps expand their minds and 

engenders creativity. 

Special emphasis is placed on natural 

materials and neutral colours with play 

equipment selected accordingly. Smart 

technology has been built into the centre. 

This includes a centralised music system; 

wall mounted televisions to support learning 

activities; and the potential for video 

conference networking with other centres 

for connectivity between centres and staff. 

Another attractive feature of this preschool 

is its opening hours, from 7am until 6pm 

and flexibility of times when a child can 

attend. This significantly supports families 

who are seen as important, something that 

is reflected in the dedicated space in the 

entry area where there are comfy couches 

so whanau can relax and chat while having 

a coffee.

experience this.

Building a new 

preschool 

Space has 

been set 

aside in the 

entry for 

whanau to 

relax. 

Considerable thought has gone into the 

design of Blossoms Educare’s new early 

childhood education centre in Rolleston. 

The aim for the centre was to merge town 

and country, a theme that fits with Blossoms 

Educare’s policy of providing more open 

space than the Ministry of Education 

minimum requirement; something that has 

proved popular with parents and children 

alike. 

From planning the size of the functional 

spaces, play areas, outdoor facilities, and 

colour scheme to the construction, a team of 

people have been involved. 

Heading the project were Blossom 

Educare’s development team, JP Singh and 

Kuljeet Singh. They found a suitable site in 

Rolleston, designed the centre and managed 

the project, working closely with builders 

Hazeldine Construction who co-ordinated 

over forty seven sub-contractors and 

suppliers. 

Jared, Jasmine and their team at Hazeldine 

Construction say they feel fortunate to have 

been involved with Blossoms Educare who 

they found to be professional and inclusive, 

allowing them to contribute to the end 

result. This included landscaping and laying 

the hard surfaces. 

“The brief for the outdoor space was to 

create different areas, including a cycle track, 

quiet places, and an entertaining area where 

children could sit. We linked this to the 

small house that will allow for imaginative 

play based around the home,” explains Nick 

Newell, Construction Support Manager for 

Hazeldine Construction. 

Timber was to be used instead of synthetic 

products and soft colours to blend with the 

brick colour for an earthy environment. 

Hazeldine Construction produced a 

2D drawing to work from and chose the 

materials being given artistic licence to 

create the spaces. 

Nick says the outdoor area tops the 

preschool off, and after spending months on 

the internal building, it was great to be able 

to add the finishing touches. 

“It’s a play area that children can really 

enjoy as an extension of the centre itself 

rather than an afterthought. We’re proud 

of what has been achieved and appreciative 

of being able to take ownership of the total 

product,” says Nick. 

The team at Blossoms Educare are 

appreciative too. 

“The builders were brilliant, responsive 

and truly part of our team,” says Paula 

Reeves, New Projects Manager. “If you 

telephoned them requesting something or a 

change, they were on the job immediately.” 

Hazeldine Construction has a versatile 

team sharing a diverse skill set. Their 

projects range from hard surface concreting 

to building work such as extensions, kitchen 

and bathroom renovations, and residential 

and light commercial new builds. They were 

involved in the construction of Kaiapoi’s 

information centre and PlaceMakers outlet 

and are principal builders for Blossoms 

Educare’s second Canterbury early 

childhood centre in Rangiora. 

With their first Rolleston early childhood 

centre up and running, Blossoms Educare 

have no time to rest with plans in the pipeline 

for a second centre in the area in the not too 

distant future.

New tool approved 

for estimating 

nitrogen losses 

N Check, a new electronic tool for 

arable and horticulture farmers, has been 

approved for use in the Selwyn Te Waihora 

catchment. It provides an alternative to 

OVERSEER® for estimating farm nitrogen 

losses. It is free, quick and easy to use. 

NCheck will be available for an interim 

period of up to five years while the crop 

module in OVERSEER® is being updated. 

In the meantime, it is important for 

farmers to keep their farm data from 2009- 

2013 as they will eventually require this to 

develop an OVERSEER® nitrogen baseline. 

How does NCheck work? 

NCheck was designed to enable farmers 

to access their own N-loss numbers. The 

tool uses the farm address to access the soil 

and climate information for the farm and 

then leads the farmer through a short set 

of questions about the farm system and its 

management. It then uses this information 

to estimate a nitrogen loss for the farm. 

This number is the Nitrogen Loss Estimate 

for the farm. N-Check assumes that the 

farmer is applying good management 

practices (GMPs). 

In the background, the tool is accessing 

an extensive set of OVERSEER® results, 

generated for Environment Canterbury’s 

Matrix of Good Management (MGM) 

project via a set of answers. It is drawing 

on less farm information than a full 

OVERSEER® budget, so the N-Loss 

estimate it produces could be less accurate 

than the OVERSEER estimates. 

At the end of the process an NCheck 

report is available. This can be printed off 

and filed with the farmer’s consent, if one is 

required, and the farm environment plan. 

NCheck can be used by all farmers in 

Selwyn Te Waihora to determine their 

nitrogen loss number and based on this, 

whether or not a consent is required. 

Additionally NCheck can be used for 

two types of farms in Selwyn Te Waihora 

in the consent process and during on-farm 

audits. These are: 

Arable and horticultural farmers with 

cropping rotations on more than 50 per 

cent of the property or intensive vegetable 

rotations for more than 80 per cent of the 

time. 

Low leaching/lifestyle farming activities 

where nitrogen losses do not exceed 15 

KgN/ha/year. 

Finding and using NCheck 

NCheck can be accessed on Environment 

Canterbury’s website: Once you have 

found the tool, follow the instructions to 

register yourself as a user. 

Guidelines for using NCheck are 

available on the same page of the website. 

Selwyn Te Waihora Land Management 

staff have scheduled a series of dropin 

sessions where they will be able to 

demonstrate NCheck, and FAR is planning 

to run consent-development workshops in 

the autumn. 

NCheck will be available for up to 

five years while the cropping module of 

OVERSEER® is being updated. Consents 

issued based on NCheck Nutrient Loss 

Reports will expire in 2022 and those 

who have used NCheck for consents this 

year, will need to reapply at that stage with 

OVERSEER® data. 

Farmers may still choose to use 

OVERSEER® data for the current 

consenting process. 

If you are part of an irrigation scheme, 

you may still need to use OVERSEER®. 

Check with your scheme. 

If a significant large part of your farm 

business relies on intensive, winter 

dairy grazing you should prepare an 

OVERSEER® budget. 

If you wish to explore different nitrogen 

mitigations or land use scenarios 

OVERSEER® will be the better option. 

To date, NCheck has been only been 

approved for use in the Selwyn Te Waihora 

Zone, however, there is a strong potential 

to use it in other Canterbury catchments 

to help with the consenting process. 

Approval in these zones will depend on 

representation from the zone committee to 

Environment Canterbury. A stronger case 

can be made if farmers support their zone 

committees with an application. Farmers 

are urged to do this.

Produced by Vauxhall Motors (later General Motors), 

Bedfords were a world leading truck brand. Many were 

farm workhorses, purchased second hand after time as a 

business work vehicle, like the 1969 J1 Bedford that Ross 

took over with the family farm in Fairlie. 

Purchased new by Timaru wool buyers McNees, the 

Bedford was sold to Ross’s father at the end of 1972. 

“Dad used the truck around the farm and to cart wool 

from Fairlie to Timaru,” explains Ross. 

At lambing time, chains were needed on the back 

wheels as the truck was too heavy in the front and too 

light in the rear for the paddocks, which were still wet 

from rain and snow. The truck has a saver/back for 

lifting sheep (a mechanism for saving farmers’ backs). 

Ross sat his heavy vehicle licence in the Bedford. 

When empty it was just underweight so legal to drive 

on his car licence. He suggested to the traffic officer, that 

they collect some bags of seed from Dalgety’s store to 

make the truck heavier and was told not to bother, he 

could sit his licence in the truck it as it was. 

The Bedford has a very thirsty 3½ litre, 6-cylinder 

petrol motor. It does about fifteen miles to the gallon on 

the road and five to the gallon over farm paddocks and 

hills, with a road trip between Christchurch and Fairlie 

costing about $80 in fuel. 

According to Ross, finding first gear is a crash box while 

the remaining three forward gears are synchromeshed 

and the motor, which was designed for flat land, lacks 

power up hills when loaded up. 

“It’s got stuck a few times and needed a push or the 

tractor to pull it out. We used to take it up to the skifield 

because it was our only vehicle that had chains. 

We could fit them quicker than people with cars. We’d 

chuck a couple of bags of salt lick on the back to give it 

traction,” says Ross 

The truck has been reliable over the years. Given its 

age, it is in good condition with a few dents and scratches 

though Ross says the motor is starting to show its age. 

“The Bedford’s been reliable and is usually easy to 

start though we had to crank start it when we couldn’t 

afford a new battery. It’s pretty basic with little in the 

way of creature comforts,” informs Ross who is often 

approached by people who recall learning to drive in a 

Bedford or using one in their job. 

The J1 Bedford flat-bed truck has served on the family 

farm for over forty years. It was the only truck Ross’ 

father owned so when he and Alice moved to Selwyn 

the truck came too. He still uses it but wonders if it is 

time the J1 Bedford went home to Fairlie, to retire to the 

Fairlie Museum.
