does U-turn over well repair

Brent Norton has won a 

battle with the Earthquake 

Commission over his liquefacted 

well. 

EQC has done a U-turn on 

Mr Norton’s claim to pay for 

the damage to the well on his 

property near Tai Tapu after 

the Ombudsman’s Office began 

investigating. 

The damage was caused in the 

February 22, 2011, quake. 

EQC declined Mr Norton’s 

insurance claim. 

Mr Norton believes there 

could be other landowners like 

him in the same position. 

The domestic well, the 

only source of water for this 

home, became blocked with 

liquefaction during the quake. 

Demands on the well were 

minimal because his new home 

and property had not yet had 

established gardens and lawns. 

But during the summer of 

2011/2012 when the gardens and 

lawns needed watering the well 

ran dry after about an hour. 

Mr Norton incorrectly 

assumed this was because of a 

limitation to the aquifer. 

By summer of 2014 the well 

would run dry if two showers 

ran simultaneously and it

completely failed in 2015. 

The company which installed 

the well was called out to repair 

it. It cost $1127. 

They said the well should have 

been operating fully. 

Damage to the well because of 

the liquefaction was not included 

in the EQC scope of works 

when they assessed Mr Norton’s 

property after the quake. 

After the well was repaired Mr 

Norton sent the invoice to EQC 

for reimbursement. 

EQC would not pay on 

the basis it did not cover the 

water flow or quality of the 

water. 

The decision said: “EQC 

will cover the well structure 

if damaged but not the water 

quality. The well in this case has 

not suffered any damage”. 

It said the water quality does 

not seem to be a direct result but 

a gradual build-up of silt over a 

period of time and therefore is 

not covered by EQC. 

Mr Norton appealed the 

decision to the Ombudsman. 

The Ombudsman informed 

EQC it was investigating which 

has now resulted in the U-turn. 

The Ombudsman was advised 

by EQC it accepts that the 

blockage to the bore screen 

by liquefaction represents 

earthquake damage and the 

work required to clean the screen 

constitutes repair work. 

Mr Norton said it was a major 

back-down from EQC after what 

they had been saying for many 

years. 

“They have come up with 

so much bulls***t all the way 

through to avoid paying what 

they should have paid to start 

with,” he said. 

Mr Norton said the outcome 

of the investigation should 

set a precedence for people 

experiencing similar insurance 

issues with EQC. 

“The thing that bugs me is 

there is no consequence for 

them that I had to pay a 

number of years ago,” Mr 

Norton said.

second Selwyn Sounds rock festival 

(see page 7). 

This year’s event was a great 

success, apart from a few teething 

problems which I’m sure will be 

ironed out. 

The all-day festival will also 

feature The Feelers, Mental As 

Anything, Stellar, The Mockers, 

The Narcs, The Lady Killers and 

The Warratahs. 

That’s a fairly impressive line-up; 

on a par or even better than this 

year. 

As local lad and festival promoter 

David Parlane says: “We 

couldn’t do the same as what we 

did this year, we had to do something 

a little different and make it 

bigger and better.”

Brent ForBes - In my previous works the landscape has 

been used to observe the time of day, the seasons passing, maybe 

(but not often) a particular place – however these works are not any 

of those things. Looking at these works as a whole, I see the main 

preoccupation has been water, and where the land meets it. The 

landscape, although more modelled and distinct in terms of handling, 

is not the main motivation – just as important is the inescapable fact 

of the ocean. 

Making these works was more about the process than before, sticking 

pieces on, seeing what opportunities were created, adjusting, rearranging... 

it was about not having a set finish in mind, just responding 

to what the works needed. In this way I think of these works as more 

universal and about painting rather than simply “landscape paintings”.

Search for missing gates 


THE OWNER of a Tai Tapu 

furniture shop has described the 

theft of its set of distinctive gates 

as a “very brazen act.” 

Last Monday night Obelisk 

furniture store situated on the 

Christchurch Akaroa Rd had its 

gates covering a 6m-wide opening 

to the business stolen.

Horton

gates, imported 

from India, 

were made of 

extremely heavy 

solid steel and 

would have 

needed to be unbolted before 

they were removed. 

“Somebody knew what they 

were doing which is a little bit 

concerning . . . they couldn’t be 

lifted up and taken off,” she said. 

Mrs Horton has contacted 

both the Scrap Metal Recycling 

Association of New Zealand, 

New Zealand Post and the police 

but have had no luck in finding 

where the gates are. 

“There was a lot of scraping 

heard down the road and a lot of 

noises at around 10pm Monday 

night . . . as you can understand 

neighbours didn’t go out and 

look any further,” she said. 

Sergeant Alex Pickover said 

police are following up on the 

case but there was no CCTV 

footage available to help it determine 

who stole the gates.

Committee chairman 

Gerald Carter said he had 

shared the missing gates on the 

Tai Tapu Community Facebook 

page but had no feedback. 

“You would have thought 

someone would have seen something,” 

he said.

SEX ASSAULT INQUIRY 

Police inquiries into an alleged 

sexual assault at Lincoln University 

are ongoing a police communications 

spokeswoman said. On 

Friday, police said there has been 

no arrest in the case. A female 

student says she was attacked 

overnight on May 20/21. Police 

say the student and the alleged 

attacker are known to each other. 

Police said due to privacy issues 

no further details can be released. 

FLOCK HILL DECISION 

The Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee 

will decide whether it will 

reconfirm its decision to allocate 

the Immediate Steps Biodiversity 

Funding of $26,571 to a fencing 

project at Cave Stream, Flock 

Hill Station. The money will go 

towards stage one and stage two 

of the project as the landowner 

has withdrawn its application for 

stage three.

An independent party has been 

appointed by Go Hororata to undertake 

a feasability study looking 

at the refurbishment of Hororata 

Hall or replacement options with 

a new community centre. Business

Queen’s Birthday Honours 

for Selwyn residents 

DEDICATED TO conservation 

and outdoor recreation, Birdlings 

Flat resident Geoffrey Spearpoint 

was named in the Queen’s 

Birthday Honours yesterday. 

Mr Spearpoint was awarded 

the Queen’s Service Medal for 

services to outdoor recreation. 

Foundation for Arable Research 

director Nicholas Pyke, of 

Rolleston was made a Member 

of the New Zealand Order of 

Merit for services to the arable 

industry. 

Farmer and tourism operator 

James Guild of Darfield was also 

made a Member of the New Zealand 

Order of Merit for services 

to the deer industry. 

They were three of 28 Cantabrians 

honoured. 

Mr Spearpoint has made a 

significant contribution to conservation 

and outdoor recreation 

in New Zealand through writing 

various books and maintaining 

hut facilities. 

His books include Waking 

to the Hills: Tramping in New 

Zealand, Shelter from the Storm: 

The Story of New Zealand’s Backcountry 

Huts and A Bunk for the 

Geoffrey Nicholas Pye 

Spearpoint 

Night: A Guide to New Zealand’s 

Best Backcountry Huts. 

In recent years he has made 

a significant contribution to 

maintaining and restoring 

Department of Conservation 

backcountry huts. 

Mr Guild has several numerous 

roles including councillor 

and president of New Zealand 

Deer Farmers Association, director 

of the Game Industry Board 

and director of the Cervena 

Trust. 

He was recognised for advising 

the government on issues such 

as animal welfare, livestock tax, 

and was on the Game Animal 

Council Establishment Committee 

whose work led to the development 

of the Game Animal 

Council Act. 

He is currently Chair of Queen 

Elizabeth II National Trust and 

Molesworth Steering Committee. 

Mr Pyke was appointed Research 

Director of the Foundation 

for Arable Research in 1995 

and has helped the organisation 

make substantial contributions 

to improving on-farm 

performance and environmental 

management. 

On the honour’s list he was 

noted to have grown FAR from 

a staff of one to an international 

organisation with 24 staff. 

Mr Pyke’s contributions has 

seen New Zealand’s arable 

industry being recognised as 

a world leader in a number of 

areas such as cereal, ryegrass, 

vegetable seed and clover 

yields, sustainable resource 

use and environmental management.

THe article – Rate increase to 

manage stormwater – contains 

incorrect and misleading 

information 

The story states “Residents 

can expect a rate increase of 

$85 per property in areas where 

the district council manages 

stormwater.” 

This is incorrect. The $85 

referred to is the total rate per 

property, not the increase. For 

some households the rate will 

increase, but for others it will 

decrease or stay the same. 

The planned new standard 

stormwater rate of $85 per 

property, to be introduced 

from July 1 2017, will replace 

existing stormwater rates 

which vary by township. 

For example, in the current 

year (July 1, 2016 to June 30, 

2017) in Leeston the rate is 

$278, in Lincoln it is $85, in 

Rolleston it is $40. Under the 

previous system stormwater 

rates were based on the costs 

in each township so varied 

significantly – for example the 

rate has been high in Leeston 

as a major stormwater upgrade 

is underway. Under the new 

system the costs of managing 

stormwater across the district 

are recovered through the 

standard $85 rate charged to 

households in townships where 

the Council manages stormwater. 

Many townships such as 

Leeston will pay less for a 

stormwater while other areas 

may pay more. 

This proposed change was 

consulted on through the Draft 

Annual Plan process. 

Overall, more people indicated 

they supported the move to 

a new standard rate in online 

survey comments and submissions 

than the alternative to 

stay with the current charge 

which varies by township.

Maddie to get treatment in US

MADDIE COLLINS has spent 

most of her life battling kidney 

failure – now the 13-year-old West 

Melton resident has been dealt 

another life-threatening blow. 

She was told last week while at 

Starship Hospital for kidney treatment 

that her heart is also failing. 

If Maddie had a successful 

kidney transplant, her heart could 

recover, but without one, she 

would be at risk of a heart attack, 

her mother Sarah Manson Collins 

said. 

The news had hit Maddie and 

the whole family hard, she said. 

“She was in the room when they 

told us and she said, ‘okay, how 

many months have I got to live?’ 

We said, ‘no, it’s not like that, 

you’re going to be okay,’” she said. 

Kidney problems can force the 

heart to pump harder, putting a lot 

of strain on it. An American study 

has found children on dialysis for 

kidney problems were 1000 times 

more likely to have a fatal heart 

attack. 

The family has been fundraising 

to take Maddie to The John Hopkins 

Hospital in Baltimore, United 

States, next month where more 

advanced treatment may make it 

easier to match a donated kidney. 

In 2012, her father, Adam Collins, 

donated one of his kidneys to Maddie, 

but her body rejected it. 

“We know we’re fighting uphill 

to find a match for Maddie, but 

you’ve got to believe in miracles,” 

Mrs Manson Collins said. 

The treatment offered in the 

United States would make it less 

likely Maddie’s body would reject a 

donated kidney. 

However, it comes at a price – 

the full treatment is expected to 

cost about $350,000. 

Givealittle pages have already 

raised more than $80,000 for Maddie, 

and people in the community 

had also been incredibly generous, 

Mrs Manson Collins said. 

Many people, from family 

members to total strangers, had 

also volunteered to be tested to see 

if their kidneys might be a match 

for Maddie. 

She had no idea how many, 

as the family were not allowed 

to know unless a match was found. 

But even though none so far had 

matched Maddie, Mrs Manson 

Collins said every person willing 

to donate an organ had helped 

someone. 

“It’s not just about Maddie. We 

don’t have enough organ donors 

and that’s what this is about, so if I 

can make more people talk about 

organ donations I’ll have succeeded,” 

she said. 

She said Maddie had been 

finding things tough, as her treatment 

meant she missed a lot at 

her school and couldn’t do many 

things with her friends. 

“People say she looks so well, she 

looks so healthy, but you don’t see 

kidney failure until you lift up her 

shirt and see all those lines in her 

body,” she said. 

But she said Maddie’s love for 

animals, the people around her 

and her passion for life kept her 

strong. 

“Maddie is incredible. When 

she gets on her pony everything is 

right for her, even though I know 

how much energy it takes her to 

ride. Her inner strength puts some 

of us to shame sometimes,” she 

said.

Barnes to head Lincoln rock event 


AN AUSTRALIAN rock icon is 

set to step foot onto the Lincoln 

Domain for one of the biggest 

musical festivals in Selwyn next 

year. 

The Selwyn Sounds concert is 

back with Jimmy Barnes to headline 

the rock concert, along with 

an iconic line-up of Australasian 

groups. It will be held on March 3. 

Barnes will be joined by The 

Feelers, Mental as Anything, Stellar, 

The Mockers, The Narcs, The 

Lady Killers and The Warratahs. 

Organiser and Lincoln resident 

David Parlane said the line-up is 

sensational and he is excited to 

have secured a class act such as 

Barnes to headline the show. 

“We couldn’t do the same as 

what we did this year, we had to 

do something a little different and 

make it bigger and better . . . this 

year has got a little bit more of a 

feel for everybody,” he said. 

It was estimated more than 7500 

packed into Lincoln Domain for 

the inaugural concert in March. 

Mr Parlane said the organisers 

had learnt from the last event and 

will be looking to have more Portaloos 

and designated areas to distinguish 

between male and female. 

He said entry to the concert was 

a learning curve and there will 

now be designated lines for people 

taking chilly bins and express lines

“The area that was slowing us

sort of innovation in Selwyn. 

He said he will definitely be at 

the concert next year.

ELLESMERE College students 

have been pledging their 

support to stand together 

against bullying. 

The school took part in the 

Mental Health Foundation’s 

nationwide Pink Shirt Day to 

stop bullying recently. 

In the week leading up to 

the event, the year 12 health 

class decided to set up their 

own photo booth where 

students gave their support 

against bullying and promoted 

the day. 

The photo booth 

complemented the “pink 

promotes positivity” slogan 

students had come up with for 

the day. 

The school’s social prefects 

played the film A Girl Like 

Her to help other students 

understand bullying. 

Throughout the day, 

students wore pink and 

purchased candyfloss to show 

their support for spreading 

positivity and taking a stand 

against bullying.

Young dancers Disneyland-bound 


STEPPING OUT onto a stage 

in the heart of Disneyland is no 

more than a fantasy for most 

young dance hopefuls. 

But the dream has become a 

reality for 15 promising dancers 

at the Selwyn School of Dance. 

The dancers will travel to Los 

Angeles in July next year not 

only to perform on the stage at 

Disneyland Resort but on Hollywood 

Boulevard. 

The pupils were selected to 

join an array of dancers from all 

over schools all lover Australasia 

after sending an audition tape 

to company World Class Dance 

Tours. 

They will spend two weeks in 

Los Angeles taking dance classes 

at some of the top dance studios 

in the city including Millennium 

Dance Complex. 

Each student will need $6000 

to travel overseas and the school 

will hold a fundraising concert 

closer to the time. 

The creative mind behind 

choreographing the team dance 

for the student’s big moment in 

Disneyland is the school’s artistic 

director Emma Body. 

Mrs Body said the students 

are excited by the opportunity 

and she along with several other 

teachers at the school will be

looking to put together a 30min 

dance piece. 

“I know a lot of kids are keen 

on doing stuff from film La La 

Land . . . generally it will be 

something pretty upbeat,” she 

said. 

Mrs Body, of Rolleston had 

bright beginnings to the dancing 

world when she was a child, 

making the cut for the Royal 

New Zealand Ballet. 

“In those days they came and 

auditioned everybody. It was a 

bit bigger deal than these days. 

They tend to just pick the people 

who fit the costumes,” she said. 

Growing up in Nelson, Mrs 

Body trained under Gillian 

Francis before she moved to 

study Otago University and took 

an interest in contemporary 

dance while there. 

She then danced and taught 

with Canterbury Ballet before 

she had two children and set up 

her own school in 2007. 

“It is really cute, my eldest 

daughter when she was four she 

was at a pre-school in Rolleston 

and must have told one of the 

teachers there “mummy was a 

dancer” and they approached me 

about taking some pre-school 

classes,” Mrs Body said. 

When her pre-school pupils 

reached school-age Mrs Body 

decided to set up her own school 

to give dancers in Selwyn an 

option. 

Her own school now has 

more than 200 dancers with 

one travelling from as far as the 

Heathcote Valley to train. 

Dreaming up a mega Disneyland 

dance routine is not the 

only showpiece Mrs Body has on 

the go with her ballet pupils set 

to perform the Coppélia ballet 

at Middleton Grange School on 

June 24. 

The comic ballet show brings 

back fond memories for Mrs 

Body who danced as a child in 

the Coppelia’s Waltz of the Hours 

for the Royal New Zealand Ballet. 

Wanting only the best for her 

students, Mrs Body is a “sucker 

for punishment” making about 

50 tutus from scratch for the 

dancers in the show with her 

mother Jeannie Stewart.

Peter Redmond, Grant Hunter and 

Graeme Piper. 

A dress jacket was presented to Mr Riki 

as an acknowledgement of the 25 years of 

service he had done. 

His family also performed a haka to 

celebrate his achievement. 

Callum Duncan and Bruce Whitfield 

were presented with silver bars and a 

long service medal having both served 16 

years. 

Josh Spence and Patrick van de Pol 

received silver bars and a five-year

Myles Gordon was presented a threeyear

Said Mr Croy: “The night started off 

slow as everyone wanted to catch up with 

friends. But after the official part and the 

supper, things came to life. It was great to 

see so many people up dancing and not 

just sitting on their bums,” he said. 

Wives and partners of the brigade were 

also each presented with a small pamper 

package for the support they had given to 

the brigade over the years. 

“They are our unsung heroes,” Mr Croy 

said. 

He said the volunteer brigade would 

like to thank everyone who came and 

enjoyed the evening.

Rolleston reaps benefits of planning for the future 

Rolleston is one of the fastest 

growing towns in New Zealand, 

largely due to its forward planning 

and additions in infrastructure, 

commercial and community 

projects. 

Until 1990 the town had only a 

few sealed streets and a population 

of just under 1000. Today it has 

mushroomed to 15,000. Conservative 

estimates suggest it will hit 

19,000 within 10 years. The current 

expansion began in the 1990s and 

was significantly boosted by people 

relocating post earthquake. 

Today its economy is booming 

and families are flocking to the 

flourishing town. New secondary 

school, Rolleston College, opened 

its doors in February, initially to 

223 Year 9 students only, and will 

add year levels as students move 

through. Six years ago, Rolleston 

had one primary school; now the 

Ministry of Education has added 

another three primaries, with a 

fifth, Lemonwood Grove, opened 

at the start of this year. 

Rolleston is home to two South 

Island inland ports. Carter Group is 

developing I Port, a $500 million 

industrial and logistics park on 122 

hectares. Stage 1 of the development 

saw the sale of 27 hectares

Portrayal earns Darfield HS award 


THE OFTEN tragic aftermath 

of drink-driving has been 

portrayed in a performance at 

the 2017 Stage Challenge & J 

Rock. 

Darfield High School was 

awarded second place in the 

RAW division, it also received 

five other awards. 

THe competition was held at 

Horncastle Arena recently. 

Darfield High School’s 

performance was titled Could 

You Live With It? 

Year 13 student and head of 

stage challenge Jade Collier said 

it was about showing what it is 

like when a driver is responsible 

for taking other people’s lives 

and what the driver has to live 

with. 

The idea was inspired from 

discussions in the media about 

drivers carrying passengers on a 

restricted licence. 

“We still can’t get over that we 

got second place as there was so 

many amazing performances 

on the night, we are so proud of 

everyone’s efforts,” Jade said. 

Lincoln High School also won 

six awards for its performance 

Hidden Poverty to raise awareness 

of the level of poverty, 

prevalent in society today. 

“After exploring other issues,

back to the idea poverty is

problem in the city,” the school’s 

dance and drama teacher Robyn

awards for their performance on 

the different types of stereotypes 

students are often put into at

Merrin Diack said her students 

were outstanding and it was a 

big experience for the students 

doing the show for the first 

time. 

“It really encapsulated their 

idea of just being yourself and 

not being tied down by what 

anyone says you should be,” she 

said.

Major Collaborative 

Community Concert 

Preparations are well underway for a major 

collaborative community concert which 

celebrates the music from movies and 

musicals. Lincoln based musician June Burney 

has pulled together a diverse range of Selwyn 

based musicians and community groups of all 

ages to perform at the ‘A Celebration of Screen 

and Stage’ Concert. 

The concert will include a live performance 

by members of the popular musical theatre 

group the Kirwee Players (formed in 1977) 

the group has delighted audiences with their 

yearly musical productions this year’s musical 

treats being The Little Mermaid and the 

forthcoming The Full Monty. 

The Selwyn Community Choir, 

run by Belinda Cullen-Reid & 

Linley Thomas and comprising 

almost 50 enthusiastic 

members, will get you rocking 

with their lively performance 

of hits from Grease and local 

band Algal Bloom will provide 

their own interpretation of 

some Blues Brothers classics. 

The Selwyn Youth Choir will serenade the 

audience with a selection from The Sound of 

Music whilst an energetic Hairspray number 

by student led Lincoln High School Musical 

Theatre Group will be sure to get your feet 

tapping. 

The Ellesmere Pipe Band will even be on 

hand to provide a haunting version of the

Are you ready 

for snow? 

June marks the official start of winter and this brings the risk of snow. 

Snow is common in Selwyn during winter and has the potential to cut off power and telephone 

services and close roads. 

Selwyn District Council Emergency Manager Officer Ryan O’Rourke says that now that winter is 

here, it is important for people to ensure their household is well prepared to cope with snow. “The 

further away from a main town you live, the better your preparations need to be as you could be 

housebound for several days until roads can be cleared and power restored. However a large 

snowstorm could cut power to main towns like Rolleston, Lincoln and the surrounding areas so 

everyone needs to be ready to cope with that situation.” 

To prepare your household for snow you can take the following steps: 

· have several days’ food and bottled water, medication and a first aid kit, a portable battery 

operated radio, torch, matches, baby food and supplies, cutlery and can opener, and warm 

clothing stored in a waterproof container 

· have an alternative power source and another way of cooking food if the power fails 

· if you have a fireplace, check you have several days’ supply of firewood or coal 

· keep your vehicle fuel tank near full to avoid ice in the tank and fuel lines 

· on the farm; plan where livestock can be moved to shelter and ensure there is enough dry feed. 

Consider how you would supply stock water if the power is off. Most animal deaths in winter 

storms are from dehydration 

· register online to join Selwyn Gets Ready at www.selwyn.getsready.net. This free service will 

send you severe weather warnings and emails or texts with updates in an emergency 

· get to know your neighbours and find out whether they need assistance, or could help you, in an 

emergency. 

If a snow storm hits then: 

· listen to your radio, or television, and visit the Council website, www.selwyn.govt.nz, for weather 

reports and information 

· ensure you drink enough water and watch for signs of frostbite or hypothermia. Wear layers of 

loose, light, warm clothing 

· keep rooms well ventilated when using gas or kerosene heaters to avoid toxic fumes building up 

· bring pets inside and move stock to shelter 

· report broken utility lines to Orion 

· check on your neighbours and help them out if needed 

· avoid driving unless absolutely necessary. If you have to travel take snow chains, warm clothing 

and essential emergency items in case you become stuck 

· if you are caught in your vehicle in a snowstorm, stay there and make yourself visible by tying a 

bright-coloured cloth to your radio aerial and keep the inside light on. 

On the roads this week 

Maintenance repairs are planned on Gillanders, Hororata and Milnes Roads – the roads will remain 

open with traffic controls in place. Footpath reconstruction is planned on Birchs Road in Lincoln. 

Bridge reconstruction is planned on Jarvis Road. Footpath construction continues on Petticoat Lane in 

Doyleston, Holley Street and Chervier Street in Leeston, and Hastings Street in Southbridge. 

Works are planned along Springston Rolleston Road throughout June. The work involves seal widening on 

the eastern side of the road to create a right turn bay onto Dynes Road and piping the water race along this 

section of road underground. Traffic delays and reductions to one lane are possible while work occurs. 

Sewer line installation continues on sections of Hamptons, Shands, and Selwyn Road to the 

intersection of Springston Rolleston Road. There may be a reduction down to one lane on these roads 

with traffic delays possible. 

Christchurch Southern Motorway extension 

There will be changes to the traffic setups on both Weedons Ross Road and Weedons Road over the 

next couple of weeks. The one-way system remains on Waterholes Road from Hamptons Road to 833 

Waterholes Road running south towards Robinsons Road with detours in place, with changes to the 

road alignment to allow for construction of the bridge. Please be alert to changes in traffic management, 

follow the on-site signage and drive to the conditions. 

Celebrate Matariki 

Selwyn Libraries are celebrating Matariki – the Māori New Year with 

free puppet shows for kids. Libraries will also be playing videos of 

local people sharing Matariki stories on TV screens. 

Matariki is the Māori name for the group of stars also known as the 

Pleiades or the Seven Sisters which rise in late May or June. This 

year it rises on 25 June. 

Lincoln and Darfield will host Toro Pikopiko Puppets who will be 

performing the world’s first Māori Rock-Art Puppet Production, Te 

Rerenga – the Flight! This is a free 40-50 minute show, suitable for 

all ages but created especially for children of primary school age. 

Te Rerenga – the Flight is an acoustic rock musical, featuring 100 

fabulous ‘Flatso’ puppets inspired from ancient cave drawings 

made on limestone cliffs and caves around the Timaru area. This 

fun production will take you back in time a thousand years with 

a story about a group of rock art puppets who meet up with the 

Bird Woman while she searches for her whanau. The shows are 

on Tuesday 13 June at Lincoln Event Centre from 12–1pm and on 

Friday 16 June at Darfield Library from 9.15–10.15am. Bookings are 

not required to attend this free event. 

Matariki stories that will be screened at the library include The little 

Kiwi’s Matariki, Together in Love: A Legend of Matariki, The Seven 

Kites of Matariki and Daniel’s Matariki Feast.

Last available lifestyle lots in 

West Melton on offer 

Wilfield’s residential lifestyle subdivison 

in West Melton is in hot demand, with half 

the sections now sold or under offer. 

Wilfield is the last subdivision in West 

Melton with allotments that are currently

To get there from Weedons Ross Road, 

turn into the subdivision onto Kingsdowne 

Drive, then veer right and take your second 

left down Silver Peaks Drive. Follow your 

nose to find the castle. 

“We’ve worked really hard to ensure that 

connectivity between public spaces, and 

walkways through to the shops and the 

nearby church, including negotiating and 

building walkways across private properties 

and pedestrian crossings across West Coast 

Road,” Hamish says.

The green planthopper, 

also known as the torpedo 

bug, is a common pest of 

the garden. 

Siphanta acuta is the 

scientific name given to 

this 15mm long bug which 

sucks the sap out of plants 

and excretes unwanted 

honeydew. 

The sugary, bluishgreen 

honeydew is 

utilised by sooty mould, 

which can turn leaves an 

unsightly dark colour that 

interferes with the plant’s 

photosynthetic process. 

ANNOYANCE: The green planthopper, also known 

as the torpedo bug, is a common pest of the garden. 

The bug is an Australian 

species, and has green 

upright wings that 

resemble a thorn or small 

leaf, which gives it great 

camouflage. 

It lays about 100 eggs 

in a semi-circular raised 

clutch that hatch in 10 to 

20 days, depending on the 

temperature. 

The nymphs go through 

five growth stages and 

have a strange looking 

tuft of white hair on their 

bum. 

Both nymphs and adults 

jump when disturbed, and 

the adults can fly a short 

distance. 

The adults live for about 

60 days.

Update your style 

Fashion is constantly evolving and changing. We often see 

customers who have favourite wardrobe items that when they go 

to replace, have become difficult to find. While there has never 

been such a variety on offer in the fashion world, trends do 

change meaning your good old wardrobe staple has evolved 

into something a little different. 

With this in mind, the following are suggestions as to 

how to move on to remain current in your look. 

The traditional woman’s shirt with a collar is a 

perfect example of this. Once upon a time this 

style was everywhere and while there a few 

on offer, the style has moved on to collarless 

tops and blouses including Chinese collars or 

scooped or v-necks. 

We have pictured the Airlie shirt ($145.95) which 

is a beautiful dressy version in black and gold 

metallic. 

There are several different jacket lengths 

available in stores but the predominant style is 

shorter which is flattering because it can add 

some definition at the waist so flatters most 

women. This style replaces the traditional mid 

thigh length blazer which featured strongly in 

the past.

another example of this alternative to a traditional blazer.

Leggings are another fashion item that has moved 

on. The super stretchy knit leggings of the past 

have evolved into slim leg pants. The look is 

similar but just a little more tailored and much 

more flattering.

funky crosses detailing which are ultra popular 

because they are so warm, comfortable and 

look great with longer tops and knits. They are 

also an ideal leg width for wearing with ankle 

boots ($119). 

The humble cardigan is another favourite 

for many. The more traditional shorter length 

varieties have evolved into more relaxed 

shaped wraps and longline cardigans. 

These less structured shapes work well 

with slim leg pants or pencil skirts. When 

wearing fuller pants or more A-line skirts, 

a short length jacket is probably a better 

alternative.

Spell-bound in Hobbiton

MATAMATA’S lush emerald 

pastures and roly-poly hills are 

happily home to Hobbiton, the 

ultimate cinematic shrine for 

set-jetters in New Zealand. 

Like a third of all visitors, 

I have never watched or read 

an entire story or movie, from 

either trilogy. But for starryeyed 

Tolkien junkies, a journey 

here has acquired the stature of 

a pilgrimage. 

To reach the movie set entails 

a short drive by bus across the 

Alexander family’s farmland 

on a private sealed road, which 

was built by the New Zealand 

Army to service the convoy of 

crew production vehicles and 

equipment. Sir Peter Jackson 

sweet-talked the then Prime 

Minister, Helen Clark, to approve

Alighting from the bus, the 

bright green grass is long and 

lush as we trundle down the 

muddy track to the first hobbit 

house, where ‘the Hobbiton effect” 

suddenly washes over me. 

Unlike so many movie 

locations, Hobbiton casts you 

under its spell because it’s 

exactly the same as it appears 

on screen. It’s all so sweet and 

tender, with washing hanging

on a line near a chimney poking 

out of a grassy mound. 

Baskets are plump with 

pumpkins, while flowers and 

herbs have been hung up to dry 

by a round yellow door. As we 

walked down a gravelled path, 

some members of my group 

frothed with delight, recognising 

it as the spot where Frodo 

Baggins greeted Gandalf at the 

start of The Fellowship of the 

Ring. And these tingly movie 

moments just kept on coming, 

as we strolled around the 44 

hobbit houses that are strung 

around the hillsides, fizzing 

with excitement being photographed 

outside Bag End or 

sitting on the see-saw beneath 

The Party Tree, where Bilbo 

held his eleventy-first birthday. 

I was fully submerged in the 

fantasy-meets-reality world of 

Middle Earth. It’s little wonder 

that 450,000 visitors toured 

the movie set, last year alone.

hills, the panoramic views 

reach right across the lake to 

the stone bridge, the watermill 

and the Green Dragon Inn, 

which looked like a life-sized 

thatched cottage from my 

grandmother’s Lilliput Lane

Sir Peter Jackson’s art director, 

Brian Massey, ensured everything 

down to the mugs maintained 

complete faith with how The 

Green Dragon Inn was depicted 

onscreen. 

A triumph of expert craftsmanship, 

it’s a charmingly snug and 

toasty timbered environment, 

and the crackling open fire was an 

extra thrill to warm the cockles, 

on a chilly April day. All the brews 

are exclusively created by Good 

George Brewing, in Frankton. 

Maybe it was the ale, but as I 

re-boarded the bus to depart, I felt 

like I was stepping out of a movie. 

It really doesn’t matter whether 

you’re a film fanatic or not. 

The movie set sits on 4.8ha of 

land and my charming guide, 

Kate, shared a constant flow of fascinating 

bite-sized nuggets about 

Hobbiton. 

An over-riding theme is the 

meticulous attention to detail 

that Jackson demanded. All of the 

farm’s livestock had to be removed 

when shooting took place, because 

they didn’t look English enough. 

Suffolk sheep, notable for their 

black faces and legs, were hauled 

up from the South Island during 

shooting. 

Real apple and pear trees 

were stripped of their and replaced 

with plastic leaves and 

plums, even though they only 

featured for three seconds in the 

movie. 

A fake oak tree, created from 

silicon, was dressed with 200,000 

fake leaves. Jackson didn’t like 

the colour of the leaves, so they 

were all re-painted by hand, even 

though the tree was only in shot 

for 10 seconds. 

Kate also revealed that moss 

and lichen was liberally deployed 

to give the movie-set’s fences a 

weathered, old look. They created 

fake moss and lichen by blending 

woodchips, yoghurt and paint 

together. 

As they were during filming, the 

vegetable patches are still filled 

with super-sized plants so as the 

hobbits would look smaller. 

Technically, it is still an “active 

set,” and a team from Weta visit 

every six months to give it a touch 

up. 

The hanging clothes were deliberately 

made to hang on the line 

for up to two years, before being 

replaced.

appearance of the trees, 

flowers and lawn.

New Tuatara ATV scores high 

on strength and safety 

Innovation, simplicity and ingenuity are at 

the fore with the side by side Tuatara 1100 

ultra-terrain vehicle. 

Unlike many ATVs that are based on fourwheel 

motorcycle technology, the Tuatara 

1100 is more like a Jeep in design and 

appearance and able to be road registered. 

“Quad bike accidents occur all too regularly, 

with many operators killed or injured every 

year. We wanted to design a safer vehicle that 

would cope with New Zealand conditions, 

from dusty dry to extreme cold and wet 

weather; over any terrain whether rough, 

pumice or sandy ground,” says Geoff Hill 

who along with his partner Qingmei Pang, 

set up Lifestyle Tractors & Machinery Ltd, 

now trading as Tuatara Machinery Ltd. 

‘Project Tuatara’ began three years ago. 

After initially launching a two seat model 

powered by a 600cc motorcycle engine, 

Geoff and Qingmei decided to upgrade to a 

three seat version powered by a much more 

powerful 1100cc four cylinder Chery engine. 

The result is an extremely quiet, reliable and 

very fuel efficient engine. 

Since its launch, modifications have been 

made to improve the Tuatara with flexibility 

of this kind only possible as it is Geoff and 

Qingmei’s own brand. 

“We’ve listened to our customers 

and made modifications based 

on their suggestions, making 

the Tuatara as ‘bulletproof ’ as 

possible,” advises Geoff who adds 

that customer response has been 

extremely positive, with people 

being very impressed with what 

they see. 

“Hunters love these vehicles 

because they can carry three 

people and all of their gear, and 

these machines will pretty much 

go wherever they point them,” adds 

Geoff. 

“The Tuatara offers selectable 

two-wheel and four-wheel drive, 

and individually selectable front 

and rear differential locking. This 

allows the Tuatara to be comfortably driven 

over rough, demanding country, even in 

shallow snow.” 

The Tuatara 1100 is certainly unique. Made 

from steel and built on a ladder chassis, there 

is virtually no plastic componentry so the 

vehicle is robust and able to carry more than 

its quad bike counterparts. 

Safety has also been paramount in the

rigidity that protects the driver 

and passengers, is enhanced with 

the placement of full, four-point 

seatbelts for all passengers. 

As farm vehicles must perform 

in day-to-day conditions which 

are extremely demanding on 

machinery, durability was also 

an aim in designing the Tuatara 

1100. This is where Qingmei’s 

engineering background came into 

play with the result, a vehicle that is 

capable of doing the job and lasting 

the distance.

Farmer advisory panel to provide 

feedback on genetic development 

New Zealand Animal 

Evaluation (NZAEL), a 

subsidiary of DairyNZ, 

has established a new 

farmer advisory panel 

to provide practical, 

farmer based feedback 

on animal evaluation 

research, development, 

and communication. 

NZAEL manager Dr 

Jeremy Bryant says it 

is vitally important for 

farmers to be involved 

in genetic evaluation 

development. 

“The perspective and 

experience of farmers is 

invaluable when it comes 

to enhancing the animal 

evaluation system,” Dr 

Bryant says. 

The aim of the panel is to create a forum 

for discussion between farmers, researchers 

and the NZAEL team, and to assist NZAEL 

in identifying practical issues that could be 

implemented as part of the strategy. 

“The six farmers on the panel have 

farming businesses that are representative 

of a range of New Zealand farming systems. 

They are advocates of genetic improvement,

and will meet about five 

times a year to give their 

practical views on research 

and development being 

proposed or undertaken 

by NZAEL and DairyNZ

There are currently two 

key areas that the panel is

reducing the ‘reproof bias’ 

in AE enrolled sires (read 

more at dairynz.co.nz/ 

reproof) and the second is 

a mid-term review of the 

economic models that are 

used to generate breeding 

worth. The review will 

commence in spring 

2017, and the panel, along with other 

stakeholders, will be involved in providing 

views on the key focus areas. 

DairyNZ strategy and investment leader 

productivity Bruce Thorrold: “DairyNZ 

invests a significant amount of farmers’ 

levy money in NZAEL each year, and 

it’s critical we look to maximise value to 

farmers – getting more direct farmer input 

is one important way to do that.” 

In addition to working closely with 

the panel, NZAEL values feedback from 

all New Zealand dairy farmers and will 

continue to consult the industry on big 

changes and developments via breeding 

company meetings, user group meetings, 

consulting officer networks, social media 

and email newsletters which are produced 

three times a year. User group meetings will 

be held from time to time to communicate 

major developments.

The three pretty Ps

WINTER HAS officially arrived. 

But just because the days are 

getting shorter and the weather is 

getting colder it doesn’t mean the 

colour in your garden has to be 

the same. 

There are several flowers that 

thrive in cool conditions – and 

all of them pack a punch when it 

comes to colour. And, coincidentally, 

all begin with P – polyanthus, 

primula and pansy. 

Here’s another P word for you 

– popular. Polyanthus, primula 

and pansies are the three most 

popular flowers we sell at this 

time of year. Probably one of the 

main reasons they’re so popular, 

is that they’re all easy to grow. 

And it’s fair to say there is 

a pansy colour or pattern for 

everyone. 

Now I’ve convinced you of the 

benefits of growing one or more 

of these pretty plants, you need to 

work out where to grow them. 

All three grow really well in 

hanging baskets and pots. This is 

good if you like to move the colour 

around your home or garden. 

If you do decide to pot your 

plants, be sure to use a good potting 

mix. This will ensure they

get a good start a good kick-start. 

And wherever you plant them, 

just make sure they get a bit of 

sun. 

Planting is easy, just dig a small 

hole, put the seedling in and space 

each one around 20cm from the 

next. 

You can expect these pretty 

flowers to add colour to your winter 

in around six to eight weeks. 

If you want to encourage more 

flowering, I encourage you to pick 

off the dead flowers.

garlic 

June is the time to plant garlic! The temperatures have dropped, and the shortest day is 

near. The shortest day is a bit of an indication as to when to plant your garlic. Growing 

garlic is pretty simple, it just needs some well-dug, fertile soil, and a sunny spot to grow 

in. Once planted, it is pretty low maintenance, but very rewarding. 

tips and tricks for growing garlic in garden beds: 

Success for growing anything starts with the soil. Always replenish 

vegetable beds with good compost and Intelligro sheep or chicken 

pellets, these provide the prefect environment for all your veggies 

to get growing, and maintain the growth for the season. 

Big is best, so pick wisely 

Split the garlic heads into individual cloves, no need to peel off 

the white paper that surrounds each clove. It naturally protects 

the bulbs in the soil, and then disintegrates once the plant 

starts developing. Splitting up the heads of garlic can be done in 

advance; it doesn’t have to be right at planting time. 

Planting 

Make a hole below the soil (5cm) and about 10cm apart. The 

bright green shoots will appear in 4-6 weeks. Label the rows so 

you don’t forget where you have planted it. A layer of mulch 

around the rows once the shoots appear will help keep the area 

weed free and retain moisture.

Celery – good things take time

LIKE MOST winter vegetables, 

celery takes time to grow and 

mature. 

Maybe it’s cheaper and it’s 

certainly easier to buy from the 

supermarket. But as many of our 

customers know, growing your 

own vegetables is about more 

than that. 

Namely, knowing what’s gone 

on to your food before you eat 

it, and the sense of satisfaction 

and enjoyment from growing it 

yourself. 

To grow great celery, the first 

thing you need to do is prepare 

your soil. Celery likes soil that’s 

well- drained and sweet (and in 

a full sun position), so make sure 

you add lime before planting. 

If you’re equipped to measure 

PH levels, the reading should 

be between five and six. Celery 

also grows best in a garden that’s 

raised and filled with potting mix 

– so if you can make this combination 

happen, you’re off to a 

great start. 

Once your soil’s ready purchase 

your seedlings. 

When you’re ready to plant, 

dig a hole approximately 3cm 

deep. Pop in your seedling and 

use compost to create a mound 

around the plant. This blanches 

the base of the stems and keeps 

them tender. The good news is 

you don’t have to keep mounding 

like you do with some plants – 

just keep your celery watered and 

that should do the trick. 

Plant each seedling 20 to 25cm 

apart and continue this process in 

rows across your garden. Celery 

grows best this way, making it a 

good companion plant for dwarf 

beans, carrots, spring onions, 

parsley and bok choy. In fact, if 

you have any of these in your garden 

and they’re ready to harvest, 

celery is the perfect replacement 

plant. 

Your plants will develop slowly 

at first, but in about 12 to 14 

weeks, your celery should be 

ready to harvest. Here’s a tip – 

slide your thumb down the inside 

of the fattest stalks and gently 

twist to pull them off the plant. 

Don’t cut the stalks off as the 

stumps left behind will rot and 

hinder the health of the whole 

plant. 

You may notice the homegrown 

version doesn’t look quite 

as perfect as the supermarket 

variety, but it will definitely taste 

as good – probably even better 

thanks to the knowledge that you 

grew it yourself.

MX-5 an example of advanced engineering

“SAVE UP your money,’’ was the 

advice from Masaya Kodama, 

CX-5 project manager, Mazda 

Motor Corporation, Japan. 

I had asked Mr Kodama if a 

new Mazda RX was likely given 

the concept drawings of a new 

sports car have been on show. 

Mr Kodama said rotary engine 

development was ongoing, and 

from those comments I would 

say a new RX is inevitable. 

I’ve long considered Mazda’s 

development of its rotary engine 

to be one of the company’s finest 

engineering achievements. 

Although I’ve never had the 

good fortune to own a rotary, 

my son has a RX7 turbo and 

occasionally I get to experience 

the feel and performance of that 

amazing sport coupe. 

As history has served to prove, 

Mazda has advanced engineering 

techniques right through its 

passenger vehicle line-up, and 

just recently one of its other sport 

models, the MX-5, was launched 

in a new variation – that with a 

folding convertible roof – made 

of metal. 

Of course, the soft-top MX-5, is 

still available in four variants, and 

the concept of a folding metal 

roof isn’t new; targa tops, as they 

have become commonly known, 

have been around for many decades. 

However, the point I’m

making is that the mechanism 

which transforms this popular 

sports car is another example of 

Mazda’s engineering prowess. 

The 13sec electric operation is 

just sheer genius, it can also be 

open and closed at speeds of up 

to 10km/h and, for interest’s sake, 

boot space remains the same for 

all models. 

The concept for which we like 

MX-5 hasn’t been compromised, 

it is still the cheeky, two-seater 

which thrills with its chassis balance 

and associated handling 

prowess. 

Whereas the soft-top is available 

in both 1.5-litre and 2-litre 

variants, the hard-top RF 

(retractable fastback) is a 2-litre 

car only, but there’s also a choice 

of specification and gearbox. The 

GSX sits at $48,495, a Limited

Before you jump to the conclusion 

that the hard-top needs 

the 2-litre engine because of 

the metal structure’s increase in 

weight, bear in mind that that 

adds just 47kg into the car and 

performance is far from compromised. 

The acceleration times 

between the two models are 

much the same – 0-100km/h in 

6.6sec and 7.2sec respectively. 

Even though the 1998cc, twincamshaft 

unit is built to Mazda’s 

SkyActive efficiency and emission-friendly 

parameters, it is still 

a high performing engine with its 

118kW and 200Nm ratings. 

It works freely through the 

six-speed automatic thanks to 

low early gearing and a broad 

top end gear to promote highway 

economy.

with the 8l/100km (35mpg) figure 

showing on the test car’s trip 

computer when I took it back to 

the dealership. 

I’ve often been a bit critical of 

the MX-5 and the sound that is 

generated within the cockpit, history 

has it that it has always been 

a bit noisy. I guess performance 

car buyers like that and they may 

be disappointed in the hard-top 

as it is far quieter and far more 

to my liking; there is an angry 

engine sound when it’s working 

hard, but under normal conditions 

the hard-top promotes a 

quiet in-cabin environment and I 

relate to that. 

Not only is the engine a delight 

in terms of flexibility and honesty, 

the MX-5’s greatest virtue is 

that of its feel-good factor. The 

suspension and chassis engineering 

is a marvel. Of course, drive 

is sent to the rear wheels and that 

promotes a pure handling sensation, 

add in the fully involving 

feel from the steering wheel and 

the compliance within the spring 

and damper rates and you have a 

true sports car, one which delivers 

the fun factor along with the 

ability to conquer the most challenging 

of corners. 

Take into account, too, that the 

tyres aren’t huge (205/45 x 17in), 

there isn’t a lot of load put on 

them, and with a height of just 

1235mm there is little gravitational 

force working against the 

convertible in a quick corner, it 

handles flat and controlled. 

There’s some flexibility built 

into the traction control system, 

you can make it a little tail-happy 

before the electronic devices 

counteract oversteer, but that 

doesn’t interrupt the fun. The 

MX-5 in this form has lost none 

of its playful character and that 

is why it has been such a popular 

car, it has been built with character 

in mind and it doesn’t disappoint. 

For someone whose old 

joints don’t work quite as well as 

they once did, I didn’t find entry 

and exit into the test car onerous, 

in fact I was finding excuses 

to get in the vehicle and go for a 

drive.

Wait until you are in 

in the Selwyn District 

With the house design chosen and build 

underway, it is really tempting to start 

choosing brand new furniture for your 

new home, placing items on order before 

moving in. 

Holding off until you are in is a really 

good idea. 

Often older furniture can look tired 

in the setting of a brand new home yet 

choosing new items before you are in and 

have a true appreciation of the spatial 

elements of the home, can be a mistake. 

For starters, you might not have the 

budget right at the end of the build for 

splashing out on new lounge and bedroom 

suites or other pieces for the home. 

Secondly, there can be surprises as to what 

will work and what definitely needs to go 

on TradeMe or taken to the local op shop. 

The old chest or armchair which 

has been in the family for 100 years 

may look great in the new house once 

reconditioned with new stain or paint then 

re-upholstered. Tired old chairs, settees or 

ottomans can come to life when restored, 

providing a comfy seat in the bedroom 

or another corner of the house while also 

bringing a touch of colour to an otherwise 

neutrally toned décor. Bright paint 

and stencilling can also be used to add 

vibrancy to furniture for a child’s room. 

Furnishing items may be given a totally 

different purpose, adding character to a 

hallway or bedroom. A variety of objects 

can suffice as bedside cabinets created 

from stools, drums or old suitcases once 

destined for the dump or Sallies. Cushions 

and throws will also spice up a bed and 

take away from the nudity of a room that 

still needs a little more furniture. 

Fun wall hangings might be created by 

covering a purchased canvas with some 

bright and attractive fabric. You could also 

create your own artwork or let the children 

exhibit theirs. Bedheads might be made by 

covering plywood with Dacron and fabric 

while the odd feature wall will add a more 

homely feel. 

There are many great ways to spice up 

a home and reduce the costs when funds 

are tight after a build, and landscaping 

expenses might be a priority. 

Holding off will give you time to 

decide on the furnishings that will work 

best in the home in terms of look and 

functionality. There is also the added 

pleasure associated with acquiring 

furniture and furnishings over time, rather 

than having the retail satiation fix all in 

one hit. 

Holding off until you are

Looking for a property – what really counts? 

You are in the market for a new 

property, scrolling the Internet, 

examining properties for sale and 

zeroing in on those with potential. They 

might be in locations that offer cheaper 

land, larger houses, or convenience to 

work or school. 

You may have visited show homes 

and open homes becoming confused, 

overwhelmed or swept away with 

emotional factors like having 

everything new, or extra features such 

as three car garaging. 

To be happy with your choice, list the 

features that you need, considering: 

• Family space – Is there room for 

the children to play indoors and for 

television and entertainment units? 

Should this be open plan or separated? 

• Kitchen – What needs to be in 

your kitchen? How serious are you 

about a butler’s pantry? Is it a whim 

or something that offers a practical 

solution to the way you use your 

kitchen? 

• Bedroom sizes – What are optimum 

sizes? Smaller bedrooms may translate 

to slightly lower building costs while 

extra space can be useful. When 

looking at existing homes, consider 

whether the size of each bedroom is 

sufficient. 

• Garaging – A standard double 

garage once two cars are parked there 

offers little space for the toys. What 

toys do you have and could they live 

with the lawnmower in a garden shed, 

a cheaper option to three car garaging? 

If the budget allows and a larger garage 

with workshop is important, make it a 

selection priority. 

• Size of land – Lifestyle properties 

offer space for children, pets, hobbies, 

an expansive garden and perhaps a 

home-run business but they require 

work so are not for everyone and a 

compact section might be more sensible 

if a tight budget or busy lifestyle. 

• Bathrooms – Second and third 

bathrooms are great in homes with 

teenagers and a wet shower room is 

ideal for young children. A bath might 

be fashionable though is often not used 

and its absence could mean a more 

spacious bathroom. 

• Laundry – Would a laundry in the 

garage do the job? 

• Storage – How much storage do 

you need? Weigh up what can truly be 

stored in the garage once vehicles are 

in, a preference in winter. Garages vary 

in size so check the size to ensure your 

vehicles will fit. Look also at where 

else the house offers storage capacity 

such as in hall cupboards, a large hot 

water cylinder cupboard, wardrobes 

(check their width and depth), walkin 

robe, attic storage trusses, as well as 

the potential for hooks and shelving 

in the garage for bikes, tools, garden 

equipment and even kayaks. 

• Off-street parking – How many 

vehicles can be parked on the driveway? 

Will this space be sufficient? 

• Garden - Is there sufficient space 

for your children to play or for 

entertaining? 

A checklist will allow you to determine 

what will suit your needs, the point of 

the exercise, saving you time looking at 

properties or potential house designs 

while assisting you to decide whether 

to buy a new or existing home with 

both options having advantages and 

disadvantages.

Selling property without a real estate 

agent – what you need to know 

If you’re selling an old appliance, 

or even a second-hand car, it’s fairly 

safe to assume you can do it yourself 

without much hassle. You advertise it; 

find a buyer, exchange the goods for 

the money and it’s all sorted. There’s 

no need for a third party to manage 

the process. 

But things get a bit more complicated 

when it comes to selling property. Get 

this kind of transaction wrong and 

you could be paying the price for years 

to come. 

The Real Estate Agents Authority 

(REAA), the independent Crown 

entity that’s responsible for New 

Zealand’s licensed real estate agents, 

wants people to be as informed as 

possible about buying and selling 

property. It recommends working 

with a licensed real estate agent when 

you’re selling. 

“Property transactions involve 

professional experts at every stage – as 

well as real estate agents, people are 

likely to engage with valuers, building 

inspectors, engineers and lawyers,” 

REAA chief executive Kevin Lampen- 

Smith says. 

“Real estate agents are expected to 

continually upskill to stay on top of 

changes to legislation and current 

requirements, so working with a 

licensed agent gives you improved 

security. If you sell your home 

privately you do not have the same 

access to redress if things go wrong. 

A real estate agent is there to help you 

navigate the process and get the best 

result.” 

If you want to sell privately – without 

the help of a licensed real estate agent - 

you need to weigh up the pros and cons 

of doing it yourself. There’s more to 

selling your home than just putting up 

a sign and showing prospective buyers 

around; you need to understand the 

value of your property, set a price and 

choose the best way to sell it (such 

as by auction or tender). You have to 

choose a method of marketing and 

answer questions from prospective 

buyers. You also need to organise the 

sale and purchase agreement, which is 

the legal document that transfers the 

property from one owner to another. 

This includes negotiating conditions 

of the sale, such as what chattels will 

be included, the sale timeline and any 

other variations. Even if you choose to 

proceed with a private sale, it’s a good 

idea to engage a lawyer at an early stage 

to handle the paperwork. A lawyer will 

generally need to be involved to carry 

out the actual settlement. 

As a seller, you are legally obliged to 

share all relevant information about a 

property to prospective buyers, such as 

whether or not it is subject to weathertightness 

issues, for example. If you 

mislead a potential buyer, they can 

seek to cancel the sale and purchase 

agreement. They can even take you to 

court later if you’ve misinformed them 

about the state of the property 

and they suffer subsequent 

financial loss.
