championships around the world
– but you probably haven’t heard
of them.
Meet Jenny Wilkinson and
Shirley Newton, Christchurch’s
bridge playing dream-team.
They are now New Zealand’s
longest-standing bridge partnership,
playing together since 1989.
This year they will be off again,
flying to South Korea at the end
of the month to compete in the
Asia Pacific Bridge Federation
Championships, then to France
in August for the World Bridge
Teams Championships.

are worried about the impact
controversial American series
13 Reasons Why will have on
students.
They have sought advice from
school guidance counsellors on
how to deal with the impact the
series may be having on students.
Some have written to parents
and staff to make them aware
of the R18 show, which can be
streamed online, and how they
can respond to it.
The Netflix series tells the story
of Hannah Baker, a high school
student who commits suicide. She
leaves behind tapes outlining the
reasons that lead to her decision.
The series, which is based on a
2007 Jay Asher novel, also deals
with other highly sensitive issues.
Christchurch Boys’ High
School’s letter to parents said it
was concerned the “revenge fantasy”
series could lead to a “suicide
contagion” and advised parents
to encourage young people not to
watch it.
Headmaster Nic Hill said he
did not think the students should
watch it – but it was likely they
would.

THIS WEEK IN CANTERBURY’S PAST
This week in history saw Canterbury University complete its
move from the city to its Ilam campus (right) on May 1, 1975.
On May 2, 1872, the new St Michael’s Anglican Church was
opened. On May 3, 1851, George Gould opened a shop in
Christchurch. The business eventually became part of Pyne
Gould Guinness and Co. On May 3, 1985, 6000 people rallied
against the All Black tour of South Africa. On May 4, 1932, a
strike started at Christchurch Tramway. One of the most bitter
in the city’s history, it lasted 16 days. There were many injuries
and arrests among the strikers. The tram sheds were barricaded
with barbed wire, and trams were fitted with wire mesh screens
over their windows to ward off attacks. On May 4, 1981, the
southern arterial (Brougham St to Curletts Rd) was opened. On
May 5, 1970, Canadian Premier, Pierre Trudeau visited the city.

CAMPAIGNER DIES
Disability sector campaigner
Alexia Pickering passed away
last Thursday, aged 87. She was
born with spina bifida, and
was a tireless campaigner in
the disability sector, including
introducing the idea of accessible
parking spaces initially trialled
in Christchurch. In 1996 she was
made a member of the Queen’s
Service Order for services to
the community, and in 2005,
was made a Companion of the
New Zealand Order of Merit
for her services to people with
disabilities. Her late husband,
Neville Pickering was a Labour
MP, before being a city councillor,
and mayor of Christchurch from
1971-1974.
NURSES FIND JOBS
More Christchurch nursing
students have found jobs this
year than anywhere else in the
country. Of the 109 Ara Institute
of Canterbury nursing students
who graduated last year, 95 per
cent found work as nurses. The
national average nursing graduate
employment rate was 73 per cent.
WALKING TRACK SAFE
Geotechnical engineers and
abseilers spent yesterday morning
trying to make a rocky bluff above
Dyers Pass Rd and the Harry Ell
walking track safe. Abseilers used
a crowbar to pry loose an unstable
boulder. It had come lose because
of the water dropped on it during
the aerial assault on the Port Hills
fire.
APPLICATION REVISED
A revised application for a
controversial bottle store on
Trafford St has now been
submitted to the city council. A
hearing was set for the end of
March, for a bottle store at 2A
Trafford St, but it was withdrawn
days before because the applicant
Sarmarth Rajeshkumar
Limbachiya wanted to double the
size, with shorter opening hours.
It has now been publicly notified.
Residents are still vowing to fight
the application.

said the pair had been able to
have some amazing adventures
around the world, from riding
camels in the desert to exploring
markets in Asia.
Their usual policy was “what
goes on tour stays on tour,” she
said.
But they had plenty of stories –
like one experience while taking
a bus through a “dubious” neighbourhood
in Tunisia in North
Africa.
“Someone pinched my bum. I
turned around and it was the oldest,
wrinkliest old man. I elbowed
Jenny, and she turned around and
just burst out laughing,” she said.
Although they had plenty of fun
while on tour, during the tournaments
they stayed very focused,
she said.
The pair first competing together
in 1989, when they made the
World Championships in Perth.
Since then, they have played for
New Zealand as partners almost
every year, and had steadily improved,
she said.
Their best performance was a
fifth placing in the World Games
last year in Poland.

Historic election recognised

IT WAS called “solemn” news –
the most important item of the
week.
Though it sounded like someone
had died, or there had been
a great tragedy to hit the city, it
was in fact the announcement of
the first woman city councillor
in Christchurch.
Tomorrow marks the day, 100
years ago, The Star reported that
women’s rights campaigner and
Labour candidate Ada Wells was
elected to the city council.
And it appeared that the biggest
problem the city had with
it, was that lads around the city
council tables would have to
change their smoking habits and
figure out what to call her.
The lads, according to the article,
“were found gathered in little
knots gloomily debating whether
a lady member could be a called
‘councillor’ or . . . ‘counciloress’
or ‘councillorine’.
Then the worst part.
“The council has been a masculine
organisation for so long
that many of its unwritten rules
will have to go by the board now.
“For instance, there is that
humanitarian rule that members
may smoke ‘in committee’ and

Heathcote city councillor Sara
Templeton had a bit of laugh
when she came upon the article
– which was shown to her by
a city council staff member’s
daughter.
“Looking back it seems so silly
that they were ‘gloomy’ and confused
about what we now take
for granted and see as completely
normal,” she said.
On May 11, Cr Templeton is
organising a morning tea and
ceremony to recognise and celebrate
the historic moment.

Water gets Nixon walking again

NIXON IS a remarkable wee
dog.
The four-year-old pug has
had spinal issues for almost
two years, and after surgery last
month, Nixon lost all sensation
in his back legs.
Owners Josie and Dan
Mathieson were “devastated”
when he was given just a 50 per
cent chance of walking again.
But, Nixon has been dubbed
the “Benjamin Button” of the
dog world, after, for the first
time in three weeks, he took his
first steps and defied the medical
odds.
“No one really knows how
Nixon is actually standing and
walking right now,” said animal
physiotherapy technician Oliver
Gooday.
He said Nixon couldn’t go
to the toilet on his own, and
needed monitoring to make sure
he didn’t twist his spine.
Mrs Mathieson said Nixon
was “like her child” and she
was devastated when he became
paralysed.
“It was really upsetting. I felt
a bit responsible in a way,” she
said.
“But a few days after [the
surgery] he started to get back
to himself. I realised that even
though he couldn’t walk, it
didn’t seem to bother him too
much.”
Nixon went to physio about
four times a week and even
wore a pug-sized life jacket as he
walked in the underwater treadmill
to strengthen his legs.
Nixon would continue to have
treatment at the clinic, and Mr
Gooday hoped the pug would be
“bounding around in no time”.

A MAN who suffered severe
burns after an accidental garage
fire in Woolston has died.
The 50-year-old man was flown
to Middlemore Hospital on April
12 but succumbed to his injuries
on April 26.
Police said he had been living in
the garage that caught fire.
A neighbour, who did not want
to be named, said there were
about “10 explosions” before the
smoke started billowing into the
air.
Fire crews extinguished the
blaze and then police and fire
investigators started to determine
a cause.
Detective Senior Sergeant Mark
Worner said the cause of the fire
was accidental.
He said the man had been living
in the garage, surrounded by
his father’s possessions, who had
recently died.
After the fire the victim left the
property and went to a nearby
address on Hobson St where an
ambulance was called and he
was taken to hospital in a critical
condition.

Good reason to follow tradition

EMMA YATES’ grandmother
used to paint her initials on the
bottom of her crockery collection
in nail varnish so she could keep
track of it.
Lerline Morris lost her battle
to breast cancer aged just 57, and
now Ms Yates has her collection,
and adds new items to it.
As a tribute, she will use it in
her Pink Ribbon afternoon tea
on May 21 to raise money and
awareness for the Breast Cancer
Foundation New Zealand.
“The one thing that’s special
to me is that the china has her
initials on the bottom that she’s
done in nail varnish.”
Mrs Morris painted her initials
so when she took it to her
women’s division functions, she
would know they were hers, Ms
Yates said.
Ms Yates, now 39, had two
fibroadenoma lumps removed
when she was 29 and 31, and goes
for a check up every year now.
She said it was so important for
women of any age to be aware of
the breast cancer symptoms and
to get checked.
“I think a lot of people think it
will never happen to them.”
She said she was “very lucky”.
Last year she hosted a breakfast
with a friend – but this year
would be her first individual
event.
She chose to do an afternoon
tea because it was more in line
with her business The Traveling
Tea Party.
“It’s a good idea to get a bunch
of girlfriends or colleagues
together to have a fun event that
also supports a good cause.”
Pink Ribbon events will run
throughout May.
More than 3000 Kiwis are
diagnosed with breast cancer
a year, with 600 dying of the
disease.
Proceeds from the events
will go towards breast cancer
research, and help provide
awareness education and support
for patients.
Last year’s Pink Ribbon events
raised $1.7 million.

could speed
breast cancer
recovery

UP TO 251 Christchurch women
could benefit from a new breast
cancer treatment being considered,
a study has found.
New technology allows radiotherapy
to be done during breast
cancer surgery, rather than being
drawn out over several weeks.
It means patients can be treated
and recover faster.
It is already being used in a private
clinic in Auckland, and several
groups have been campaigning
to have it publicly funded.
The study was commissioned by
the Ministry of Health to look at
the cost of funding the treatment,
and estimate the demand for it.
It estimated about 461 women
across New Zealand would use
the treatment, but it could vary
between 80 and 1505.
That included between 14 and
251 women in Christchurch.
It estimated the cost of investing
in the treatment would be between
$3.72 million and $4.72 million,
but it could also save significant
amounts over 10 years by reducing
the amount of time it took to treat
women.

Pensioners still fighting over fence

THE STOUSH over a fence in
a Burwood retirement village
looks set to continue.
Retirees at the Sanctuary
Villas, Burwood had been
facing off for six years over a
humble trellis and wooden
fence.
Patsy Clegg had the fence
built outside her property,
upsetting neighbours Kathleen
and Glyn Hardy.
The fence borders a private
access road used by residents
and the Hardys claimed it was
illegal and dangerous.
Mrs Clegg has now agreed
to shift the fence back from
the road kerbing, but wants
the Hardys to sign off on the
plan before starting any
work.
“I don’t want the Hardys
having another go at me. I’ve
got no faith that they’re not
going to.”
But Kathleen Hardy told
The Star until the fence went
back to where it was when they
moved into Sanctuary Villas
in 2011, they won’t be signing
anything.
“We can’t properly judge
what it will be like (from a
drawing).”

She had legal advice that if

A GROUP of Christchurch
Pasifika youth are
campaigning for a police
racial bias committee to
be set up to investigate
allegations of police
discrimination.
About 250 young people
gathered in Christchurch
last week for the Pacific
Youth Leadership and
Transformation Council,
to discuss issues in the
community and potential
solutions.
PYLAT chairman Josiah
Tualamali’i said many
shared stories of situations
where they believed they
were unfairly treated or
discriminated against by
police because of their
race.
Most did not report it,
because they did not feel
they would be taken seriously,
he said.
“Why is it a lot of Maori
and Pasifika talk about the
police like they have to be
fearful of something, when
others of different ethnicities
don’t seem to have that
anxiety?” he said.
“I have been pulled
over a few times, not for
anything I’ve done wrong,
but when I’m driving a car
which has five or six Pacific
young people in it. We
immediately get a bit nervous,
we sit up straighter,
we are more articulate
with what we’re saying,
because we’re trying not
to give them any reason to
detain us.”
Pasifika law student
Anatea Prince, who helped
draw up the recommendations,
said a lot of people
told stories at the forum
about their personal interactions
with police.
She said many did not
know about the Independent
Police Conduct
Authority or how to make
a complaint.
Canterbury Maori,
Pacific and Ethnic Affairs
district manager Inspector
Hirone Waretini said he
could not comment on
specific cases when a complaint
had not been made.
But he said he was open
to speaking with the
young people directly to
discuss the issues.
Valuing diversity was
one of the core values of
NZ Police, he said.
“Our communities
are diverse, with an
ever-changing population.
These changes create a
responsibility on police
to encourage and grow
the diversity and cultural
competency of our staff, to
ensure we are responsive
to the communities we
serve,” he said.

liaison officers working
with different ethnic communities,
an emphasis on
diversity in recruitment
campaigns, and training
for recruits in how to communicate
and interact with
diverse communities, he

Aranui’s changing
attitude to police
Six months ago, the Aranui Neighbourhood Policing
Team was set up to try to combat crime and distrust of
police in the community. Reporter Gabrielle Stuart visited
Aranui to ask residents how the police were doing
SITTING ON her front doorstep,
Denise sees a lot of what goes on in
Aranui.
Wrapped in her dressing gown
for warmth, coffee beside her, her
view on Friday was peaceful – a
few children playing in Wainoni
Park, workmen busy on the sports
field, and neighbours wandering
past heading to the library or community
centre.
But it wasn’t always like that.
She also sees vandalism, fights,
and plenty of blue and red flashing
lights. She regularly hears young
people screaming and fighting late
at night in the park.

Building relationships with the people

Two weeks ago, a policeman
knocked on her door.
After 35 years living in the
community, she had learnt that
usually meant nothing good – a
search for someone, a crime
committed, or a tragedy in the
neighbourhood.
But this was different. She
said the policeman was friendly,
introduced himself and asked
about her thoughts on the neighbourhood
and what the police
could do better in it.
She said the relationship with
police had been rocky for a long
time in Aranui, but she hoped
that would change.
“It’s good to have them around,
for our youth. And they’re doing
really well, you’ve got to hand it
to them,” she said.
The Star spoke to residents
around the park, and all but
one had spoken directly with
someone from the policing team.
Almost all the comments were
positive.
Some had played a community
v police rugby game – where
the police were apparently thoroughly
thrashed, but earnt a lot
of respect anyway.
The policing team manned
the barbecue at local events, and
walked local children to school in
the mornings.
They also patrol differently –
they now ride around the community
on cycles, instead of in
cars, to appear less threatening.
Policing team leader Sergeant
Toni Carroll said they were trying
to do things differently.
“We’re trying to get rid of that
perception that if they see police
it’s a bad thing,” she said.
By the numbers, the results are
not looking good.
The crime rate in Aranui has
risen over the months the team
has been working.
In the first three months of
this year, there were 73 crimes in
Aranui reported to the police, up
from 58 at the same time the year
before.
But Sergeant Carroll said this
was expected.
Because they were building
more trust in police, more people
would feel confident in reporting
crimes, she said.
“When we were surveying
around Wainoni Park, people
were telling us teens were often
misusing the park, yelling and
screaming at all hours and breaking
glass. We said: ‘Did you ring
the police?’ None of them had.
But the next weekend we got four
calls about disorder at the park,”
she said.
She said the teenagers had
scattered by the time a police car
arrived.
But the policing team was still
able to make sure the glass was
cleaned up, and was working
with the city council to improve
lighting and trim bushes where it
was happening, she said.
Of the crimes recorded this
year, 43 were burglaries, and 10
thefts. Seven were assaults, and

13 were illegal use of a motor
vehicle.
Rather than decide themselves
what issues to focus on, the policing
team has been surveying residents,
asking what was important
to them.
Sergeant Carroll said they had
visited about 1400 homes so far,
about 90 per cent of the houses in
the area.
Common issues had emerged.
Many residents were worried
about the young people hanging
out in groups at the shops or the
park and getting into trouble,
and hoped the police could get
alongside them, she said.
While they are trying to build
a positive relationship with the
community, she said it would not
stop them coming down hard on
crime.
But helping someone who had
committed a crime turn their life
around could be easier when they
already had a good relationship
with police, she said.
“We don’t want to ruin their
lives by arresting them. We want
to stop them offending, so they
have better opportunities as they
grow older,” she said.
A-Town Boxing Gym owner
Jamie Roberts described himself
as “a little bit rough around the
edges”, with most interactions
with police in his past on the
wrong side of the law.
But he said the police had
treated him with respect, even
working alongside him on a new
project in schools, teaching children
control, responsibility and
respect through boxing skills.
He said people in Aranui were
suspicious of newcomers, and it
had taken him more than a year
to be accepted when he moved to
the community about 20 years
ago.
But the police had already won
over many people, he said.
“They’re not coming out and
asking for our names and date of
birth. Instead they’re asking our
names and how they can help,”
he said.
Mr Roberts bumped into one
of the officers on the team picking
up rubbish in the park one
morning.
He was also impressed by the
reaction he saw police officers
receive at Haeata school recently.
“The kids were coming up
and saying morning officer, and
shaking their hands. It was pretty
cool,” he said.
Sergeant Carroll said the local
children had been quiet and
reserved around the team at the
beginning, but over time they
were warming.
“There are still some hard core
ones who won’t say hi, but you
can tell that even they want to,
now. We’ll keep going until they
say hi,” she said.

Can Wagner rise to
the challenge?

New rebuild boss Nicky
Wagner has been dubbed
the “personable politician”.
But has she got the goods
to finish the job that Gerry
Brownlee started? Bridget
Rutherford reports
IT WOULD be hard to find two more
different political personalities.
Within minutes of speaking to
National Christchurch Central MP
Nicky Wagner (right), you know she’s a
glass-half-full kind of person.
The former schoolteacher turned
businesswoman and Environment
Canterbury councillor, is popular
and personable with her “grass roots”
attitude to politics.
She clawed her way to win the
Christchurch Central seat in 2011,
through hard yakka, and pounding the
pavements.
Christchurch’s future clearly excites her.
Former rebuild boss and now Foreign
Affairs Minister Gerry Brownlee, on
the other hand, was a different type of
politician.
He’s not afraid to be critical – and then
sometimes having to apologise.
Infamously, he called former Mayor Bob
Parker a “clown.” He later phoned Parker
to mend fences.
He said in 2012 some landowners
after the earthquake
were “carping and moaning”
about their situation.
During his six-year tenure
Gerry
Brownlee
overseeing the city’s rebuild,
he’s been accused of not
communicating and failing
to listen. But many say he had a role too
big for one person.
It’s been more than a week since Prime
Minister Bill English announced Mrs
Wagner would take over Mr Brownlee’s
role as Minister Supporting Greater
Christchurch Regeneration.
Already she’s copped flak. Critics say
at number 22 on National’s list, she will
be powerless because she is not a Cabinet
Minister, and therefore the Government
was walking away from Christchurch.
Former mayor Garry Moore said Mrs
Wagner had been given a “poisoned chalice”
because everything was in place.
“Being outside Cabinet will mean Wagner
will have to sit, Lazarus-like, in the hall
outside the Cabinet meeting room hoping
that she will be able to influence the way
things are being managed in Christchurch.
“Cabinet decisions will be passed out the
door to her as a recipient, just like most of
us in Christchurch have experienced for
years.”
By comparison Labour MP Megan
Woods, who has the Christchurch issues
portfolio, is number five on her party’s list.
But Mrs Wagner said whenever a decision
about Christchurch was made in
Cabinet, she would be there.
It also meant she would have an extra
day each week to be in Christchurch, she
said.
But Canterbury University political science
associate professor Bronwyn Hayward
said Mrs Wagner would have more
resources and support if she was a Cabinet
Minister.
“I think it is a concern that the Government
does not see the need to sustain the
focus on Christchurch or why even they

being managed in Christchurch.’ – Garry Moore, former mayor
need MPs like Wagner in their inner circle.”
She said Mr Brownlee was not the “right
personality” for the city and Mrs Wagner
had the ability to restore relationships –
but it might be too late.
“He [Brownlee]. . . tended to work with
a fairly narrow community of loyal supporters
and similar interests.”
She said Mr Brownlee had a large workload,
and perhaps was asked to perform
the role for too long.

He was a “polarising figure” who exacerbated
anger and frustration, she said.
In comparison, Mrs Wagner was popular
and personable, she said.
Mrs Wagner said she wants to keep the
ball rolling, and build on the “tough” decisions
Mr Brownlee had made and “copped
flack” for, including the residential red
zone’s future.
Labour’s earthquake recovery spokeswoman
Megan Woods said she had “grave
concerns” that Canterbury was slipping
down the Government’s priority agenda.
“Canterbury doesn’t have a place at the
table when decisions are being made.”
Mrs Wagner said the city was in a great
position compared to 15 years ago where
you could “shoot a gun down Cashel Mall
at 11am” some days.
“Who would have believed down the track
we’re in such a strong position?”
She said following the February 22,
2011, earthquake, their original expectations
on how quickly the rebuild could
happen were not realistic.
“That was the biggest challenge.
“We’ve got the momentum going in the
right direction.”

Canterbury spirit shines
THE NATION watched in shock
at the events that unfolded in
Canterbury in 2010 and 2011,
changing the region forever.
Hundreds of central city
buildings needed to be demolished,
regional landmarks were
destroyed, thousands of homes
suffered earthquake damage, the
level of land damage was unprecedented
and the future seemed
uncertain.
For more than six years I’ve
held the role of overseeing the
region’s earthquake recovery.
Rebuilding Christchurch been
an enormous undertaking for all
those involved but we’ve managed
to stave off the gloomy predictions
about population flight,
high unemployment and the
collapse of the regional economy.
I’ve been genuinely humbled at
the strength and determination
of Canterbury – homeowners,
business owners, investors, developers,
families and communities
alike.
While I’ve never been a fan
of the word ‘resilient’, it does
describe the spirit of our beautiful
region, which I’m proud to
call home.
Since late 2010, I’ve worked
with countless people from
around the country and overseas
who have all shared the same
vision; that Canterbury will build
back better than it was before.
There’s been the odd disagreement
along the way – many of
them publicly documented – but
that’s par for the course.

I want to thank every single
person who has backed Canterbury’s
recovery. Every single person
who chose to stay and work
in the region, every single person
who chose to open a new business
or build a new building and
every single person who chose to
study here – you are why our city
is more vibrant and prosperous
than ever before.
Canterbury is in a strong
position and I have no doubt
my colleague Nicky Wagner will
continue the good work that is
already happening in and around
the city.
While my ministerial attention
will now have a more global
focus in the Foreign Affairs portfolio,
I remain committed to the
Ilam electorate as their local MP
and to Christchurch as my home.

Job not finished in city
THIS WEEK, Canterbury has
a new Minister responsible for
overseeing the regeneration and
recovery of our city. I wish Nicky
Wagner well in this important
role.
Although it is fair to say Gerry
Brownlee and I have not always
seen eye to eye, I would like
to acknowledge his service to
Christchurch at one of the hardest
points in our history, and wish
him well for the new challenges as
Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Coming up to seven years on
there is still so much to be done
in our city. The anchor projects
continue to be slow and messy.
Timelines around completion of
the convention centre and the
fully completed East Frame are
about as clear as mud. Instead of
providing certainty to stimulate
activity in the CBD, these projects
are weighing down the city.
My concern is that in allocating
the portfolio to a Minister outside
Cabinet is a sure sign that Canterbury
is slipping down the list
of priorities for National. We’ve
seen this attitude developing for

corner is no big deal. I disagree.
I want to know that every time
health funding, especially mental
health funding, is discussed that
someone is thumping the table
and telling Ministers about how
bad it is down here.
I want someone there who will
share the examples of our new
entrants starting school with
developmental delays and forcefully
arguing for much needed
additional mental health support
down here.
The job in Canterbury is
nowhere near finished. There’s
buildings, roads and infrastructure
to complete but also the
critical job of ensuring that our
people are also recovering and
regenerating.
The test of leadership for the
new Minister is to be a staunch
advocate for us on these issues
and reminding her colleagues
this region is still a priority.
Labour is committed seeing the
job through with Canterbury. We
know the job is far from done and
our region will be a priority for a
Labour government.

PLANNING an escape to
Rarotonga?
Tear yourself away from the
beach to dig a little deeper at the
roots of the island. Venture along
the back road and enter a timeless
world of free-range harmony in
abundance.
On my various forays along the
back road, I feasted on freshlyplucked
pawpaw, mango, guava,
bananas and star-fruit, bursting
from the roadside trees.
Scenically insatiable, I marvelled
at the colourfully-painted
hinterland homes and the dense
plantations, bracketed by Rarotonga’s
serrated peaks which
exude a Jurassic Park aura.
There are many ways to get
a flavour for Rarotonga’s vast
green heart, including taking a
ride with the recently launched
Tik-e Tours. These tropical
three-wheeler luxury tuk-tuk
limousines are fully electric, so
unlike the racket they make on
the streets of Bangkok, these
beauties will glide you around
Rarotonga’s ravishing interior in
virtual silence.
My driver/guide was a worldly
elder called Mata, a natural and
charismatic raconteur. Throughout
my tour, every passer-by
warmly waved out to Mata, or
stopped to chat. One chap we
talked to was busy cultivating
noni fruit by hand.

into the hinterland and the
Turangi Valley, thickly carpeted

CHILLI LIME PINEAPPLE
Ingredients
BEEF MINCE NACHOS
Ingredients
1 Pineapple
2 Limes, zest and juice
¼ tsp Dried chilli, chopped
Directions
Cut the skin off the pineapple,
cut into wedges and remove the
core. Rub the lime zest and chilli
over the pineapple.
Cook on a medium-hot
barbecue, or under the grill, until
golden then squeeze fresh
lime juice over just before
serving.
BANANA PANCAKES
Ingredients
3 medium Bananas
2 Eggs, separated
100g Yoghurt, plus more to serve
50g Butter, melted and cooled
plus more for cooking
150 ml Milk
½ tsp Vanilla paste, or essence
½ tsp Salt
1 cup Self raising flour
50 ml Honey or maple syrup to
serve
Directions
Mash one banana with a fork
and then whisk together with
the egg yolks. Mix in the yoghurt
and melted butter, then add the
milk and vanilla essence and
whisk until smooth.
Add the salt and flour and stir
until just combined and a batter
is formed.
Whisk the egg whites until
they form soft peaks. Fold into
the batter half at a time trying to
keep as much air as possible in
the batter (if you prefer a thinner
pancake you can add a little
more milk).
Slice the other bananas into
half cm slices.
Add a little butter to a medium
hot non-stick frying pan
and then place banana slices in
groups of three for each pancake.
Allow them to cook for two
minutes.
Pour two tablespoons of batter
over each group of bananas
to form a pancake and allow to
cook for two to three minutes
until the top has bubbles and is
starting to dry out a little.
Carefully flip and cook on the
other side another one to two
minutes.
Remove, keep warm and serve
in a stack with honey and natural
yoghurt.
2 Tbsp Olive oil
1 Onion, finely diced
500g Beef mince
800g Whole peeled tomatoes
2 Tbsp Tomato paste
¼ tsp Chilli powder
1 packet Corn chips
½ cup Cheddar cheese
¼ cup Low-fat sour cream
1 sprig Parsley
Directions
Heat a saucepan, add olive
oil and onion, and cook over a
medium heat for five to eight
minutes until softened. Add beef
mince and cook for five minutes,
breaking up the mince with a
wooden spoon.
Chop canned whole tomatoes
and add to the pan.
Add tomato paste and simmer
for five minutes. Add chilli
powder and season with salt and
pepper to taste.
Spoon mince mixture onto
four plates and surround with
corn chips. Serve topped with
grated cheddar cheese, a dollop
of sour cream and parsley.

I KNOW it’s easy and not
too expensive to buy broad
beans at the supermarket,
but I enjoy eating them
fresh from the garden.
They taste great and it’s
nice knowing exactly what’s
taken place during the
growing process.
Broad beans are one of
my favourite varieties to
grow.
Like most other vegetables,
you can grow broad
beans from seed (actually
it’s the bean itself). But I
recommend growing from
seedlings.
Doing this shortens the
time before harvest (around
six less weeks) but, more
importantly, takes out a
lot of the hard work. Once
the root systems are well
formed (yet still separate
from each other), almost
guaranteed they will grow
well.
Once you’ve got your
seedlings, you need to find
somewhere to grow them.
I like to grow mine in a
raised vegetable garden,
but they also grow well in

Broad beans are pollinated
by bees, so it’s helpful
to grow them near a beefriendly
plant like lavender,
rosemary or cornflowers.
It pays to check the pH
level of your soil. Broad
beans like the soil to be
around 5.5 to 6.5pH.
Not sure what the pH
level of your soil is? Most
garden centres sell kits,
alternatively there are also
companies which will test
your soil for a small fee.
If the pH level of your soil
could go higher, try adding
a little bit of lime from
your local garden centre. If
you’re not sure of the pH
level, it wouldn’t hurt to add
a little bit of lime anyway.
Then simply dig a little
hole and plant each seedling
around 15cm apart in
rows approximately 30cm
apart.
Once the plants are
around 1m you can stake
them individually but I prefer
to put a stake at either
end of the rows and loop a
big piece of string around
the whole lot to keep them
growing together. Your
plants will lean against each
other and grow across the
ground.
The seedlings will take
around eight to 12 weeks
from planting to produce
beans ready for harvesting.
Harvest the beans when
the pods are around 75-
100mm.
Blueberries
If you love to pick and eat fresh,
have you tried growing your own
blueberries? We have all heard of
blueberries, but what a lot of us do
not know is that they are easy to grow.
Blueberries are a wonder food and
are a fantastic addition to the garden
whether you grow them as specimen
plants in containers, or as a low hedge.
Blueberries like soil which is slightly acidic
with plenty of nitrogen. A slow-release
fertiliser, such as Oderings Total Replenish
in spring before the new growth appears
is ideal. You may not realise this, but some
blueberry varieties can be killed if there
is too much calcium present in the soil,
therefore avoid lime fertiliser and gypsum.
Water is vital for the full development of
your berries, which swell rapidly in the
last two weeks of ripening. Lack of
water can mean a poor crop and dark,
undersized berries.
While blueberries are resistant to most
diseases, it is prudent to spray to prevent
mildew and cover them to protect the
ripening berries from birds. The plants
are hardy to minus four degrees, although

frost will damage flowers. They can
also suffer from iron and magnesium
deficiencies. If your plant leaves are
a reddish-yellow colour, especially near
the edges it is most likely a magnesium
deficiency and if the leaves turn yellow
with green veins it is most likely an
iron deficiency.
Knowing how to prune blueberries is
important, because fruit is borne on last
season’s wood and the most vigorous
wood bears the largest fruit. The flower
buds that will produce next year’s crop
develop on the outer part of this year’s
growth in late summer as stems mature.
Minimum pruning consists of the removal
of dead or damaged wood, any weak
growth or twiggy old branches. Remove
some of the oldest branches after four to
five years to encourage new growth. While
light pruning is possible year around,
winter is the best time for heavy pruning.

A cappella group on road to stardom

CITY COUPLE Malia and Julian
Hay have never been afraid to
take risks.
It was just over a year ago
they delved into the unknown,
setting up the city’s first ever
vocal academy specialising in
contemporary a cappella singing
– Voices Co.
The endeavour has proven to
be successful for the Linwood
pair who have produced more
than 20 songs, had about 50
come through their school and
have three established squads.
So when Television New
Zealand began the hunt to find
the country’s top a cappella
singing group the couple decided
to enter their top performance
squad in the new show The
Naked Choir.
The ensemble made up of Mr
and Mrs Hay, Liam Dacombe,
Jasmine Salam and Anneliese
Veronese was one of eight voice
groups to be selected to compete
on the reality show hosted by
singer Jeff Hunkin.
Already the group has made
an impact singing their own
version of singer-songwriter Sia’s
The Greatest, making it past the
first stage of the competition on
Sunday.
“The first week we didn’t know
anything about the groups we
were competing with . . . we sort
of had no idea if we were the
only group doing contemporary
against maybe four different
choirs,” Mrs Hay said.
Expecting to be assigned
a specific song for their first
challenge, the groups were
thrown a “curve ball” having
to choose their own song and
arrange it in two weeks.
Mrs Hay said the first challenge
was “agonising” with the
group needing to choose a song
that showcased their best skills
and what contemporary a cappella
is all about.
Having first met at the
Christchurch Schools’ Music
Festival when the couple was 10,
Mrs Hay said the city’s music
scene has been a huge part on
their life.
“Earthquakes aside it is very
special to be representing our
city. But a city that has had a lot
of change and really had to pick
itself up creatively,” she said.
Aiming to take the title for the
country’s best a cappella group is
not all the Hays have on the go,
with plans to take their academy
into high schools later this year.

master classes and will look to

Plans are also in the making
for the academy to run a
workshop conference over the
summer holidays for singers and
people wanting to start up their
own tutor groups.
Mrs Hay said she wants the
academy to contribute to the
city’s music economy and help
singers get paid work.
“I certainly don’t think musicians
work any less hard than
any other profession its just it
is hard to get started and that is
what we are passionate about,”
she said.
But she said the academy is
also aiming to make contemporary
a cappella accessible to
everyone who wants to give the
style a go.

Singer bares his soul in musical comedy

songwriter, entertainer and
massage therapist will bare his
soul at the upcoming Cavell
Leitch International Jazz and
Blues Festival.

Jeff Clark is a veteran improviser
who performs with
The Court Jesters and has been
involved in The Court Theatre’s
Scared Scriptless since 1996.
Clark describes his alter ego
Gary Starlight as a cross between
John Rowles, Elvis, Michael
Buble and Pepe Le Pew.
As part of the show “Gary
Starlight” will recount the worst
year of his life and sing the songs
he wrote following each event.
The one-hour show will be
filled with original songs produced
“out of thin air” inspired
only by Clark’s interactions with
the audience.
The character “Gary Starlight “
first emerged as a wedding singer
in The Court Jesters’ ensemble
improvisation show The Early
Early Late Show in 2012.
Since then several shows have
been created by Clark with
The Gary Starlight Christmas
Special at The Court Theatre in
2013 and An Evening With Gary
Starlight with the Nelson Fringe
Festival last year.
Clark will be accompanied by
pianist Kris Finnerty and guitarist/bass

under-16 basketball team to
play at the Australia Junior
Championships. They are

Summerfield set for home rally

MATT Summerfield will go
into next month’s Canterbury
Rally in the hunt for the New
Zealand Rally Championship
after a spirited drive in
Whangarei.
Summerfield and sister
Nicole (co-driver) now find
themselves second in the
championship after they
stormed to victory in the NZRC
at the International Rally of
Whangarei.
The result comes after he
suffered gearbox failure just
three kilometres into the
opening stage at the opening
round of the championship in
Otago last month.
“I’m ecstatic. We need to build
on it from here but it’s a good
feeling going into Canterbury, it
feels like we’re back in the fight,”
said Summerfield.
Saturday saw Summerfield
put in a calculated drive. He
finished within the top four
on each stage, recording just a
single stage victory on the power
stage to capture an extra five
championship points.
The drive meant he held an
overnight lead of 29.3sec over
Dylan Turner in his Audi S1
AP4.
Not everything went to plan
for the Summerfield team,
with an exhaust manifold
requiring replacement in Sunday
morning’s 15min service.
The job took the team 20min
resulting in a 50sec penalty,
which saw Turner take the l
ead.
However, blistering pace from
Summerfield saw him win three
of the day’s six stages, eventually
cruising to victory 1min 6.4sec
ahead of Turner.
“It sucked to drop 50sec in
penalties but we would have lost
minutes if we didn’t do it,” said
Summerfield.
Summerfield is more than
overdue for a positive result at
his home event on June 4.
He won the Canterbury Rally
in 2012 but has had no luck
since, failing to finish in his
last four attempts. He crashed
in 2013, blew an engine in
2014, crashed in 2015 and blew
another engine in 2016.
“Everyone said last year
that is was done because bad
things come in threes. I’m well
overdue,” he said.

playing union are looking to
prove they can be the surprise
team in the UC Championship.
The St Thomas of Canterbury
College first XV started the Crusaders
region secondary school
competition with an emphatic
64-5 win over Burnside High
School. The interesting thing
about the team is if you asked a
large chunk of them which sport
they play the answer would be
‘rugby league’.
Zinzan Martin and Patrick
Elia both scored hat-tricks for
St Thomas’ on Saturday. The
previous weekend both attended
a South Island rugby league
camp.
More than a half a dozen
of the St Thomas’ team have
played representative rugby
league for Canterbury or the
South Island.
St Thomas’ have also followed
the trend of bringing in a recognised
name in the coaching
department, former Canterbury
and Crusaders flanker Johnny
Leo’o.
On Saturday, they take on
last year’s round-robin winners
Christ’s College. The match will
act as a great gauge for what the
team is capable of.
“I don’t think we’d call it an
upset if we get the win. It’s not
daunting for us going to Christ’s,
we’ve got a lot of talent,’’ defence

Mauger vying for top job at Highlanders

NEW HIGHLANDERS assistant
coach and former Crusader Aaron
Mauger will be one of a cast of
three all vying for the top job.
Mauger, 36, was announced
on Monday as the new assistant
coach for the Highlanders for the
2018 and 2019 seasons.
The 45-test All Black will be
the attack coach for the side, replacing
head coach Tony Brown,
who is shifting to Japan to help
coach the national team after
this season.
Mauger has just finished a spell
coaching the Leicester Tigers in
England and was actively pursued
by the Highlanders.
Mauger coached the Crusaders
under Todd Blackadder for three
seasons before heading to the
Leicester Tigers where he was
was head coach under director of
rugby Richard Cockerill.
However, he was moved into
the top job in January when
Cockerill left but was then surprisingly
sacked in March just
after winning some silverware
for the club.
With Brown leaving, a new
head coach is needed but Clark
said the franchise would not
rush that decision.
With the appointment of
Mauger it means none of the
coaching team will have played
for Otago.
Highlanders chief executive
Roger Clark said that never came
into the appointment of Mauger
as the franchise was simply looking
for the best candidate.
“They are not many Otago
people out there coaching.
When we got Jamie Joseph and
Simon Culhane in to coach the
Highlanders that was all about
creating a new culture and environment
in the South.’’
He was confident Mauger
would get the best out of the
playing group and would be part
of this season’s review.
Mauger is in the United States
on holiday with his wife, Amy,
and four children. He will head
to Dunedin in July.

PROPOSED WAINONI PARK
STORMWATER BASIN
EASEMENT ON RESERVE
The Aranui catchment is at greater flood risk since
the earthquakes due to land damage. To reduce the
increased flood risk in the catchment the north east
corner of Wainoni Park has been selected as a site for
a new flood storage basin. The basin will store flood
water in heavy rainfall events and release it back to
the stormwater network as soon as there is capacity
in the stormwater network, reducing the flood risk to
properties in the adjacent areas.
This is public notice in accordance with the
requirements of Section 48 (2) of the Reserves Act
1977 (Act) that the Council is to be requested to
resolve to grant, subject to the consent of the Minister
of Conservation, easements in gross for the right to
drain water over the land described in Schedule A
below.
Schedule A
Approximately 7,100 square metres of Part Reserve
5208, Section 3 SO 359536 and Lot 2 DP 45894, a
recreation reserve of some 57,600 square metres,
the control of which is vested in the Christchurch City
Council pursuant to the Reserves Act 1977.
Wainoni Park is situated at 31 Hampshire Street. To
provide the required stormwater storage the north-east
section of the park will be dug out by approximately
one to one and a half metres. The resulting flood
storage basin will then be extensively landscaped to
enhance the surrounding park environment. The space
will remain fully accessible to the public for recreation
purposes at all times other than when temporary
ponding occurs during extreme rainfall events or during
occasional maintenance periods.
