TWO YOUNG brothers<br />
will be travelling to<br />
Palmerston North for<br />
the youth national futsal<br />
championship at the end of<br />
the school holidays.<br />
Calum and Liam Murdoch,<br />
of West Melton, have<br />
been selected to play for<br />
the Canterbury under-14<br />
and under-12 Canterbury<br />
futsal teams respectively.<br />
Something they’re both<br />
really excited about.<br />
“I was pretty happy,”<br />
12-year-old Liam said<br />
about getting<br />
in the<br />
team.<br />

will be<br />

third<br />
time<br />

Brothers off to futsal nationals<br />
representing Canterbury<br />
at national level futsal. In<br />
previous tournaments the<br />
team has come second and<br />
third.<br />
But this year he’ll get to<br />
watch his little brother play.<br />
“It’ll be cool to watch<br />
[Liam] play,” Calum said.<br />
Futsal is the only FIFA<br />
and New Zealand Football<br />
approved version of fivea-side<br />
football and the<br />
world’s fastest growing<br />
indoor sport.<br />
It is a small-sided game<br />
played with a smaller, low<br />
bounce ball on a basketball<br />
sized court.<br />
World superstars such<br />
as Cristiano Ronaldo,<br />
Neymar, Pele and, Calum’s<br />
favourite player,<br />
Lionel Messi<br />
have all<br />
acknowledged<br />

the role futsal played in<br />
their football development.<br />
Calum agrees saying<br />
the touch and speed of<br />
futsal has helped with his<br />
outdoor football.<br />
Both Calum, 14, and<br />
Liam, 12, have also been<br />
playing representative<br />
level football for <strong>Selwyn</strong><br />
Football Club, Calum for<br />
the last five years and Liam<br />
for the last three.<br />

Murdoch will be joining the<br />
boys in Palmerston North.<br />
“It’s really great going<br />
up and getting to watch<br />
them both play at national<br />
level,” Mrs Murdoch said.<br />
While Mrs Murdoch<br />
is going up to watch, Mr<br />
Murdoch is the coach of<br />
the Canterbury under-14<br />
team.<br />

Trust Arena from <strong>July</strong><br />
14 to 16.<br />
