to shield win over Darfield
The win also finished
off a historic season for
Southbridge, who won
all four trophies on offer
this season. It was the first
time the club has won
the Combined Country
Cup, Coleman Shield, the
Ellesmere round-robin
title, and held the Murray
Cooper Shield all in the
same season.
Darfield came out
of the blocks firing as
they looked to win the
Coleman Shield for the
first time. Tries to Hamish
Pauling and Harry
Pankhurst gave them a
12-0 advantage midway
through the opening half.
However, Southbridge
answered back with a try
from Tom Turner to make
it 12-7 at half-time.
“The try before halftime
really helped us.
We’ve been behind before
this year and, with the
wind behind us in the
OPTIONS: Darfield’s
himself in space.
second half, we thought
there was no need to
panic,” said Maginness.
Southbridge took a
13-12 lead in the second
half through two Donald
penalties.
With less than 10min to
play, Darfield retook the
lead 15-13 with a penalty
of their own, before
Donald stole the show.
Last run out together
for McIlroy twins
• By Gordon Findlater
THE RESULT may not
have gone in their favour
but Saturday’s Coleman
Shield final was a special
occasion for twin brothers
Scott and Blair McIlroy.
Loose forward Blair
brought up his 200th
game for Darfield on
Saturday, while prop Scott
played his 203rd for the
club.
The pair have been
playing for so long that
some of their teammates
were only beginning
life at the club while the
McIlroys, both 33, have
been playing for the
division one side.
“Some of them were still
playing midgets when we
were playing senior rugby.
Now we’re playing senior
rugby with them,” said
TWINS: Scott (left) and Blair McIlroy played their
last division one match together in Saturday’s
Coleman Shield final.
Scott.
Saturday’s final loss was
Scott’s last match for the
club. However, it will still
play a large part in his life.
“I’ll take on the job of
president at the rugby
club here for the next two
years. My knee’s no good
as well so that made the
decision for me I guess,”
said Scott.
Meanwhile, next year’s
division one side is
expected to once again
feature the McIlroy name.
“Yeah, I’ll have another
go and see what happens,”
said Blair.
