PARADE: Classic and vintage vehicles turned out for the opening of the Crate & Barrel in Leeston last week.
Big plans for Leeston’s new watering hole
About 250 people then filled
the outdoor deck to see the pub
opened by Canterbury rugby legends
Fergie McCormick and Alby
Anderson.
The town has been without a
pub since the earthquake-damaged
Leeston Hotel was demolished
in 2011.
Mr Bradford said the planning
and consenting process for the
new building had taken years.
“I’d just like to say sorry for the
wait. But now it’s open, come and
have a cold one. The poor buggers
out here have waited far too long,”
he said.
He said it was designed to be
more than a pub, and to function
as a community centre for the
town.
It is split into four sections, each
with its own theme – the bar area,
which is all about Leeston; the
lake-themed restaurant; a sports
area; and the music section,
featuring a full drum kit mounted
on the wall in the stairwell.
Mr Bradford said he had big
plans for coming events at the
pub, but they were still under
wraps.
“Now it’s open I can sit back
and start planning,” he said.
OCCASION: Fergie McCormick (left) and Alby Anderson cut
the ribbon to open the Crate and Barrel.
THEME: Each of the sections of the new bar and restaurant are
designed around a different theme, including music, motor-cycles
and game hunting.
