Creating a ‘world-class’ city
HAPPY NEW year – may 2018
be good to you, your family and
friends.
A brand new year gives us all a
chance to take a fresh look at our
city and what we want it to be.
Since the earthquakes, we have
all faced huge change and it has
been enormously challenging.
We’ve mourned who and what
we lost, we’re gradually replacing
what we had, but we are also
seeing the opportunity for real
betterment.
The central city blueprint focused
on the Avon-Otakaro and
the east and south frames to provide
more people-friendly spaces;
new integrated facilities such as
the emergency and justice precinct
and the metro-sports; and
the infrastructure to support our
new 21st century city.
It was driven by the ideas that
came out of the ‘Share an Idea’
event and the desire to create
“a world-class small city where
people want to live, to work and
to play”.
There is still much to do but
most of the physical building is
planned and under way.
But a great city is not just about
buildings, it’s about people and
how they embrace and use their
city.

add vibrancy to the central city.

So in 2018, our challenge is to
make sure the bricks and mortar
reflect the sort of city we want to
live in. That what we do here supports
the values and the quality
of life we want for ourselves, for
our families, and for generations
to come.
So what does that look like?
The great cities of the world are
inclusive, vibrant, full of interest,
energy and excitement. And all
that comes from the people in
the city, and how they connect,
