editor’s noten
I love autumn/winter fashion – the opportunity to
wrap yourself in luxurious fabrics, add layers and
accessorise with hats and scarfs. This season we are
seeing an array of scrumptious deep colours, including
burgundy, mustard and navy, as well as texture with furs
and embroidered prints. In this issue you will find our
runway report that takes a look at all the international
fashion weeks; New York, London, Milan and Paris, and
highlights our top trends from the four great cities.
I was lucky enough a have one-on-one interview with
Emilia Wickstead during iD Dunedin Fashion Week. The
Duchess of Cambridge’s favourite designer gives us her
advice on how to dress in a chic, effortless way. We also
step back into the past to look at some of the world’s
most renowned fashion icons and which contemporary
celebrities can match their style and glamour. This issue
of Fashion brings both a local and international view on
trends and styles for the new season.
Enjoy your fashion fix,
Leather
Leather is the perfect transition fabric. It’s easy to wear and works with almost
anything. We love this leather trench by Chole. A must-have for autumn.
Roberto Cavalli
Kaleidoscope Prints
The seventies are alive again – or at least they were at
Paris Fashion Week, with designers choosing a mixture of
swirling prints, florals, metallics and paisleys. Combined
with a variety of colourways, these garments created a
kaleidoscope of colours and patterns. Givenchy stood
out the most with its psychedelic collection. When it
comes to mixing colours and prints this autumn, it would
appear the advice from the fashion greats is: ‘forget the
rules’. Embrace your psychedelic side and have fun this
season.
Looking for fashion inspiration?
British model David Gandy is the
man to watch. His style is polished,
preppy, effortlessly masculine and
very British, gaining the attention
of international media that now
watch his every move. Embracing
tailored fashions, David shows us
how to perfect the smart wardrobe
by mixing and matching essential
pieces with a twist, such as tucking a
waistcoat into pants.
Ruffles have been
reinvented this season.
runway reportn
The marathon is over, four cities in one month New York, London, Milan and Paris Fashion Week autumn/winter fashion weeks
have enthralled us with an array of style and glamour. We take a look at the top trends from the runway.
London
London was preparing for a cold winter with lots
of lush furs, knits and beautiful wintry colours.
Amanda Wakeley’s soft caramel furs received
rave reviews, as did Burberry’s military jackets.
Kiwi-born Emilia Wickstead’s collection had anklelength
dresses named the new sexy length.
included romantic plaits with lush furs à la Rachel Zoe. Puma’s black lips were the talk
of the town and Marc Jacobs’ almost Elizabethan use of furs, leather and deep forest
colours made for a must-see show.
As the trend toward casual and comfort continues, knitwear
dominates the winter runways. increasingly, people are looking for a wardrobe
that’s comfortable, easy care and will multi-task for work and play.
LOcaL lifestyle brand Untouched World
has watched consumer needs change over
time. “As our lives get busier, there’s a move
towards slow, sustainable fashion that can
be dressed up or down, and won’t be in one
season and out the next,” says Untouched
World cEO Peri Drysdale. “It’s not just about
looks and comfort either, our clients also
want to know the origins of what they’re
wearing – what it’s made from and who
made it.”
The new Untouched World Winter ’16
Collection embraces this philosophy
delivering an exciting combination of paredback
silhouettes with enduring style, and
clever multi-tasking styles you can wear a
bunch of ways (and they’re made locally from
sustainable fabrics, of course!).
Chunky knits make a comeback for both men
and women, with mixed-gauge pieces and
innovative knit structures creating interesting
textural effects. Fine Merino layering comes
in rich marled hues of ruby and blue,
complemented with a refreshing splash of
sunstone peach.
The popular Energy Pants and Slouchy Pants
for women are introduced in luxurious new
fabrics, and the new Bliss Pant offers the
guise of a dress pant with all the comfort of a
pair of Merino trackies.
Navy is one of the most popular colours this season. Best of all, because it’s a darker shade of blue, it is both flattering and slimming, too.
It’s also a better alternative to black, as it’s less harsh and carries an air of sophistication. Navy is most certainly the new black.
Five Minutes
with eMilia wicksteadn
New Zealand designer Emilia Wickstead – famous for dressing the Duchess of Cambridge – socialises in high society London circles, is a friend to the stars,
and exhibits a style that is effortlessly chic, but with a twist. Editor Victoria Tait catches up with the fashionista while she is in her home country,
to discuss her new collection, and the secret to looking sexy whilst still covering up.
Photo of Emilia Wickstead - Robyn Wilson
Can you tell me a little bit
about what you are wearing?
I love to collect pieces from every
collection that I’m crazy about – this
is a piece from my autumn/winter
collection, two seasons ago. It’s our
own geometric print made of wool
– almost feels like a blanket, which is
perfect for a cold day.
What is your inspiration
behind your own personal
style?
I find my own style is very organic
and natural. I love the idea of being
effortlessly chic, and the feeling of
throwing on a red lippy and minimal
makeup. I wear cuts that work for a
woman’s body, so they don’t need to
be tight fitting. I also love longer-length
dresses and a sleeve.
Do you use yourself as a muse
when designing?
I am always designing with myself in
mind, that comes very naturally, but I
am also designing for all women. I like
to think there is a little bit of everything
for everyone. I feel very comfortable in
my clothes.
Can you give us some tips on
how to achieve a
sexy, yet elegant, look?
Sexy can be thinking outside the box,
it doesn’t have to be a low V-neck or
be short. What I love is that unique
sophistication and creating a twist to
a garment. A high front with an open
back and sleeve, yet showing off the
right curves, is sexy.
I used to do every fitting in my business
for a very long time, and this gave me
the understanding of what women feel
comfortable in. If you are in your own
skin then that is sexy.
My spring/summer 2016 range has
dresses with balloon sleeves and small
cut-outs on the stomach, which adds
a little bit of twist. It’s about showing a
little and not too much.
In February you showed your
new autumn/winter collection
at London Fashion Week, what
can we expect?
It is a little darker and more moody
than my spring/summer collection. The
colour palette was inspired by Erwin
Blumenfeld – he was an incredibly
influential photographer. It was his
series called ‘Fantasies’ where he
photographed the aristocracy during
the sixties in London. I’ve picked up
colours and tones from this and used
them in the collection.
I played a lot with jersey; there is
nothing easier or more comfortable
than a jersey dress. I also have used a
lot of denim, which was a harsh streetstyle
way to show Emilia Wickstead
silhouettes. I’ve already been wearing
one of the dresses in denim – it feels
very cool. Each season I try to introduce
something new and fresh, it’s the
biggest challenge as a designer.

How To CHeCk If
Your SuIT fITSn
It’s hard to make a great suit look good if it doesn’t fit properly.
Follow our top tips to ensure you get the right fit and look polished this autumn.
• Ensure the shoulder pads end with your shoulders.
• The chest and lapels of the suit should contour the shape
of your chest, but should not be too tight or too loose. The
lapels should not bulge, they should lie flat on the chest.
• A jacket is too tight if an “X” is created around a fastened top
button.
• Check where your buttons are sitting. The top button of a
two-button suit should not fall below your navel – note that
this is the middle button of a three-button suit.
• The sleeves should hang straight from the shoulder to the
wrist. To test this, see if it falls where the base of your thumb
meets your wrist.
• Between a quarter and a half inch of shirt cuff should be
visible.
• The overall look of your trousers should be trim but not
tight. Keep in mind that the pockets and the front of the
pants should lay flat.
least not at Wee Kiwi in the new retail
Laneway on Conway Lane High Street
Rangiora.
After 10 years in Rangiora Wee Kiwi and
owner Lisa have settled in to their new
premise. This child-friendly store helps
make finding attractive, affordable clothes
for children up to the age of 10.
Owner Lisa is a parent herself and
chooses to stock lines that are durable
for active children and look good at the
same time. Some of the design brands
include Sucre D’Orge, which ranges from
ages zero to two along with Beanstork
organics and Knits, and Papoose, which
covers zero to six years. She prides herself
on the quality of the items she has available
which include just about everything for
both babies and children, except for
furniture. Soft toys and wooden toys,
bedroom art and accessories fill the
shelves alongside cosy knitwear and
gorgeous tops and pants for boys and
girls. Also available are beautiful locally
made bibs and blankets.
Many items are unique to Wee Kiwi, as she
only has one item in each colour per size,
making her young customers particularly
stylish. Her stock is constantly being
updated as Lisa regularly brings in
new labels and is open to customer
suggestions. Coming for Summer, Lisa
has new array of great labels.
From head to toe, children are fully catered
for. Lisa’s shoes are all podiatry endorsed
EMMA’S AT OXFORD
QUALITY MERINO FASHION
AND BOOKSn
WHILE Emma’s at Oxford is predominantly
a bookstore, it’s also your destination for
an ever-growing and changing range of
merino garments under the Merinomink
and Untouched World labels.
Owner Emma Gillard left the ‘big smoke’
of Auckland to open her store in June
2007. What started with books and gifts
has continued to evolve, with Merinomink
accessories quickly becoming one of the
star attractions. About six year ago, merino
gloves, scarves and wraps were added to
shelves and their popularity has led to the
extensive collection on offer today. “The
products are simply the best quality. The
styles don’t date, the garments don’t pill;
they are investment pieces you will wear
for years,” says Emma. “We all own, wear and
just love them.” And so does everyone else:
“Customers are coming back each season to
see what’s new and indulge in a new piece
– or three – or buy as gifts.”
Ponchos are another fashion accessory for
which Emma’s has become known. “We’re
known as the Poncho Queens by the sales
team at Merinomink!” Emma says with a
laugh. “In fact, our best-selling colour is
a rich navy blue called Zephyr and we
were told we were the third biggest seller
in Australasia of that particular line last
year.” Not bad going for an independent
bookstore in a country town.
Booklovers will love the large, diverse and
highly recommended range of literature
available in this picturesque country setting.
“People regularly say they haven’t seen an
offering such as ours in a long time,” says
Emma proudly.
Emma’s at Oxford is currently located in
a beautiful art-deco building in Oxford’s
Main Street, however, come the end of
May, you’ll find them but a few doors down
while the building undergoes earthquake
strengthening and expansion. “I’m really
looking forward to the end of the year and
being back in a bigger and better building
and really being able to showcase what we
have on offer,” says Emma.
A place to find warm, stylish accessories
and something satisfying to read sounds
simply idyllic.
MARMALADE
A UNIQUE FASHION
WHAT a treat to come across a unique
fashion boutique in a small rural town, less
than an hour from Christchurch! Marmalade
Clothing and Curiosities in Oxford has
become well-known for its natural fibre
policy – only stocking garments made from
premium fabrics such as bamboo, modal,
organic cotton and New Zealand merino.
Locals love the affordable range and people
from all over Canterbury hurry to get their
hands on the latest arrivals. Owner Jessica
Fearnley-Campbell only ever stocks one or
two of each size, in each style, so you have to
be in quick!
Jessica is excited about the new winter
collection now in stock. Her passion for
New Zealand made means the latest ranges
from Christchurch brands Chalkydigits and
Tava, amongst others, are always in stock.
Marmalade is also the exclusive stockist in
New Zealand of fair-trade brands Nomads
Clothing and Braintree Clothing. Nomads
having recently been voted as ‘best for
ethical fashion’ by the UK’s newspaper The
Independent.
One look that features strongly this season
is ‘70s boho chic. This makes a comeback
with corduroy pinafores, peasant blouses
and floaty dresses being wardrobe staples.
Layering is also another key trend – easily
created with kimono-style short-sleeved
jackets. Meanwhile, rusty reds, smokey greys
and a hint of mustard make up just one
colour palette in a shop full of rich colour.
BOUTIQUEn
Clothing is displayed alongside a large
selection of New Zealand-made and fairtrade
costume jewellery, accessories and the
‘famous’ bamboo socks – perfect gift ideas
Ponchos, capes and wraps are very much on
trend this season and so easy to wear. Mostly
all made in soft merino, these are a must for
Retail Manager Jan Clarke says Kaye, Kerry and
clothes they sell, but more importantly about
giving their customers a shopping experience
they enjoy so much they will be quick to
Past and Present
Fashion iconsn
We are so familiar with the fashion icons of the past, such as Katharine Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and Bridget Bardot.
Their style and glamour instantly reminds us of a time where elegance and sensuality was key.
We take a look back at their signature styles and what current celebrities will follow in their fashion footsteps.
Katharine Hepburn
Known for her tomboy style, Katharine Hepburn made trousers
a fashion statement for women. She was a natural beauty who
didn’t fuss over her hair and makeup, keeping her look minimal.
Hepburn’s classic look included simple, button-down blouses,
sharply tailored blazers and polished loafers. She was full of
attitude, confidence and sex appeal.
Marilyn Monroe
The true Hollywood glamour star, with an ability
to own a sexy, sultry and yet irresistibly vulnerable
vibe. Monroe wore what are now considered
some of the most iconic outfits of all time,
including the billowing white halter-neck dress
and her pink satin strapless dress with operalength
gloves. Her clothes were fitted and tight to
show off her beautiful curves, always a high heel,
but surprising very minimal jewels.
capri pants, oversized sweaters,
curvy figure and ability to make
everything she wears look sexy.
Brigitte Bardot
This French icon was known as a model, actress
and muse to Andy Warhol. She was the woman
who made the bikini famous, through her film
Manina, la fille sans voiles (The Girl in the Bikini),
1952. She also started a trend of knitwear with
a wide neck, which exposes both shoulders,
later termed the ‘Bardot neckline’. She was also
known for her flat shoes and is said to have asked
designer Rose Repetto to make shoes as light as
ballet shoes – this was the beginning
of the ballerina flats.
Diana Ross symbolises the 1970s,
disco-era fashion. With her slinky,
draped gowns, fur stoles, widebrimmed
hats, angel sleeves and
sequins galore. Ross always looked
like the disco diva.
Jackie Kennedy
Growing up between New York and an
East Hampton estate, Jackie was well educated
in fashion, poise and etiquette. On her arrival
to the White House, Jackie hired Hollywood
designer Oleg Cassini to create her wardrobe,
she pulled pieces from Dior, Givenchy and
Chanel. During her time as The First Lady,
Jackie’s style was sensible heels, gloves and
empire-waist gowns. Later in life, when
she moved to New York, her style changed
quite drastically, but still retained the
polished glamour.
Signature look
Strong SophiSticationn
A swipe of dark lipstick and a low sleek ponytail is the big trend for this season.
The look is about strength, elegance and sophistication. Follow our tips on how to achieve the look.
Hair
The first step is deciding where
to put your part. Centre or
side-parted, each creates an
elegant and polished look.
Once you’ve decided on a
part, smooth out your hair
with straighteners.
Add some shine serum. Be
careful to focus the serum
from the mid-lengths to the
ends, as you don’t want greasy
roots.
Use a clear elastic or hairband
that matches the colour of your hair.
Carefully gather hair into a low ponytail. Place
the pony at the nape of your neck and secure it
with the elastic.
Finish by spraying some hairspray onto the
bristles of your brush to smooth out any
remaining frizz.
Lips
Line the lips prior to applying lipstick to prevent bleeding
or feathering.
Fill in lips with your oxblood lip colour (we love MAC
lipstick in Diva). Use a lip brush to clean up the area
around the lips with a concealer.
the 3-Step plan to Make
healthy habitS Stickn
Health and Wellness Coach Annabelle Matson gives us the means to lead a healthier life.
Add, modify and delete – it’s as easy as ABC.
When it comes to eating habits and making
improvements to our health in general, trying to
change absolutely everything about our lifestyle
overnight very rarely works. We often think: “If I can’t
eat/do things perfectly, I shouldn’t bother at all.” As a
recovering perfectionist, I totally get that. However,
this clearly doesn’t support success. It just keeps us
stuck right where we are, on the dieting rollercoaster,
never seeing results for the long term.
I always say to my clients, “over time not overnight”.
We want to do things gradually, because that’s
what results in permanent change. Why weight loss
and many health programmes often don’t work is
because we go from eating whatever we want, to
restricting everything.
So, instead of drastically restricting everything,
use my three-step tool – add, modify and delete.
Pick one thing you want to add
Pick one thing you want to modify
Pick one thing you want to delete
FOR ExAMPLE
Add: A morning meditation to centre you for
the day.
Modify: Refined sugar intake. Alcohol is a huge
source of sugar – so instead of drinking during the
week, stick to a few just on the weekends.
Delete: Eating after 8pm.
Commit to the add, modify, delete plan for 30 days.
Once that all becomes a habit – start a new add,
modify, delete plan.
When you do steps incrementally like that, it creates
new habits. You won’t feel overwhelmed and it feels
really manageable. Like magic, it all starts to become
a lifestyle that you LOVE and that are you motivated
to sustain.
Let’s talk lips with Koru Clinic
The features on a person’s face can change or determine how they
are perceived, and we are all subconsciously affected by these cues.
Every time we see a face, we make judgments on that person’s
character and personality, and all this happens instantly and
automatically in our brains.
Years spent talking, chewing, pouting,
smoking or smiling can lead to lines and
wrinkles around the lips. Lip fullness
can also be an indicator of aging, as
time spent biting or pursing the lips
can lead to deflated, thin lips over time.
Lips are also especially vulnerable to
environmental effects, as the skin on the
lips is less than a third of the thickness of
the skin on the rest of your face.
Many women really want to improve
the appearance of their lips but are
understandably very scared about
looking like a duck, especially after the
all too common publicised disasters
affecting some unfortunate celebrities.
These days we all recognise women are
looking for a natural appearance rather
than looking like a “Kardashian”.
Dermal fillers for the lips are one of
the most popular cosmetic medicine
treatments available, and are a very quick
and easy way to dramatically improve
your look. They typically last between
12 – 14 months, and are hyaluronic
acid based. Hyaluronic acid is a natural
component of the skin, meaning the risk
of adverse reactions to the procedure is
very, very small. Recovery time is usually
around 1 day.
There are generally 3 types of
requests for lip fillers at Koru Clinic,
clients who want to:
1. Boost Lip Volume
2. Minimise smokers lines
3. Define the lip border & reduce
lipstick bleed
Younger patients tend to go for larger
lip volumes, whilst more mature women
want a more natural lip augmentation.
At Koru Clinic we only recommend
using hyaluronic acid based fillers with
high safety profiles, and after assessing
each persons lips will decide on the most
appropriate filler for the augmentation.
A Winter SAnctuAryn
With the colder weather approaching, it’s time to retreat to our favourite warm haven.
The Colombo – with its fusion of fashion, interiors, beauty, food and entertainment – is the perfect winter sanctuary.
We speak with managing director Caroline Cooper Dixon to find out
Innovative concept and flagship stores
As well as a mixture of both international and New Zealand influences,
The Colombo offers a diverse range of choices from Andrea Moore to
This season colour trends – burgundy and navy – have been making
big news on the international catwalks across the globe this spring and
summer. So, with New Zealand being in the forefront of the coming
season’s fashions we naturally see them adapted into our autumn and
winter closets.
Create your own winter sanctuary
Depending on your style and budget there is an incredible range when
combining Repertoire and Redcurrent. Repertoire has an exquisite
collections of homewares, while Redcurrent boasts unique giftwares and
a delicate but beautiful range of soft furnishings. Nordic Chill and Abode
fill our homes with their sleek Scandinavian styles. If contemporary is
more to your liking, try Industria or the Collective. Looking for something
unique? Bolt Of Cloth offers over 800 contemporary fabrics and, for the
DIY person in the household, check out the expansive Spotlight store.
Take Ten or Take an Hour
The Colombo’s individual beauty stores offer some great packages,
depending on how much time you have. Pop in for a manicure or shape
and polish at the nail bar or you can also indulge in the beautiful hot
stone massage from Embrayce Skin and Beauty. The girls’ knowledge
when it comes to beauty is extensive, so if there’s ever an availability then
you must indulge!
For The Love Of Food
George Bernard Shaw said, “There is no sincerer love than the love of
food.” Warm your belly and your heart this winter with treats from The
Colombo food emporium.
J’aime Les Macarons have a new winter menu and for cold days don’t
