Technologies to best meet your application

The VARIAXIS j-600/5X AM machining centre integrates Wire Arc AM
(Additive Manufacturing) and Multi-Tasking technology to enable
high-speed additive manufacturing. The Wire-Arc AM torch is mounted
on the machine’s headstock to deposit material layer-by-layer and
grow near-net-shape 3D forms.
The VARIAXIS j-600/5X AM is capable of high accuracy and productivity
from the 12,000rpm main spindle and the wide B-axis spectrum of

Renishaw appRentices honouRed at
annual awaRds
Earlier this year, global engineering
technologies company, Renishaw, hosted its
Apprentice of the Year awards at its
Innovation centre in Wotton-Under-Edge,
Gloucestershire. The awards ceremony
celebrated the graduation of its 36
apprentices and recognised the outstanding
achievements of all apprentices during the
last 12 months.
Apprenticeships have always been an
integral part of Renishaw’s business, as both
the company’s founders, Sir David
McMurtry and John Deer, started their
professional lives as apprentices. Renishaw
began its own apprenticeship scheme in 1979
and currently employs 133 apprentices
across the company in South Wales and the
South West.
As well as celebrating the graduation of
the class of 2017, Renishaw recognised those
apprentices who have excelled this year, with
ten awards for best performing students in
each year and discipline, as well as one for
the overall Outstanding Apprentice of the
Year.
“Renishaw’s Apprentice of the Year
awards have been taking place for 31 years”,
explained Chris Pockett, Head of
Communications at Renishaw. “We started
off with one award and grew from there. This
year, we added five more to recognise the
increasing breadth of apprenticeships offered
and the great things our apprentices have
achieved.
“As a global company with over 4,000
employees, apprentices and graduates have a
wide range of possible career paths to follow.
An apprenticeship at Renishaw is a great
start to an engineer’s career. This year we
employed 41 apprentices who will get to
experience a range of fields, from software
engineering and embedded electronics, to
additive manufacturing and medical
technologies.”
Renishaw apprentices are also recognised
outside of the company. Steven Pickles,
trainee Production Technician at Renishaw,
who won the Outstanding Apprentice of the
Year award, was also recently named Welsh
Apprentice of the year at the Apprenticeship
Awards Cymru for his commendable work
in manufacturing and as a science,
technology, engineering and maths (STEM)
ambassador for Renishaw.
Renishaw offers many education schemes
to introduce more people to the engineering
sector and support them in achieving their
career goals. Earlier this year, Renishaw was
highly commended in the graduate employer
benefits category at the Job Crowd Awards
2017. The award was based on anonymous
reviews by graduates and recognised the
company’s graduate employees benefits
package.

DMG Mori has introduced a powerful,
universal turning machine, the CTX 2500|700,
for machining components up to 366 mm in
diameter from billet or 76 mm from bar and to a
maximum length of 705 mm. Class-leading
performance is claimed by the manufacturer,
Gildemeister Drehmaschinen, whose managing
director Harry Junger comments, “For the first
time we can turn grooves up to 12 mm wide in
CK45 steel and drill holes to 80 mm diameter.”
The ergonomic machine combines the
performance and stability of two successful
models in the DMG Mori range. It has the rigid
machine bed and stable box guideway
configuration of the NLX 2500|700, of which
more than 10,000 have been sold, coupled with
Medley Precision Engineering has recently
bought a Harrison Alpha lathe for machining a
complete variety of turned parts for the oil &
gas, defence, rail and power generation sectors.
The Mansfield based manufacturer is no
stranger to machining difficult to cut materials
and this is why they opted for the robust
platform of the Harrison Alpha 1550XS from
600 UK.
The Harrison Alpha XS is a 2-axis
manual/CNC lathe designed for fast, highquality
repeatability, accuracy and surface
finish to exacting toolroom accuracy standards,
which significantly reduces component
production costs.
Commenting upon the machine acquisition,
Medley Precision Engineering’s Production
Manager Mr Stuart Solomon says: “It’s the best
machine we have in the factory. This is because
it is remarkably easy to program as it has its
own Alphalink system that can be programmed

the VDI turret and Siemens 840D solutionline
with ERGOline 21.5” touch-screen control from
the CTX beta 800. DMG Mori’s proprietary appbased
control and operation interface, CELOS,
is included.
Top accuracy and surface quality of
machined components derive from the
thermostability of the lathe, which has a spiral
oil jacket around the spindle to control the
temperature and coolant recirculation through
the cast bed. A linear scale with a standard
resolution of 0.01 µm is fitted in the X-axis for
high precision positional feedback. Rapid
traverse of 30 m/min in the linear axes ensures
short idle times and a Y-axis may be specified
for turn-milling work of high complexity.
The turnMASTER 4,000 rpm main spindle
with 26 kW of power and 525 Nm torque or
optionally the 3,500 rpm / 30 kW / 1,194 Nm
version is opposed by an 11 kW / 7,000 rpm /
70 Nm (or 32 kW / 5,000 rpm / 360 Nm)
counter spindle.
A 6,000 rpm / 32 Nm cooled disc turret with
VDI 40 interface is standard, while an 85 Nm
torqueDRIVE and a 12,000 rpm speedDRIVE
are available. All turrets offer space for either 12
tools, or 16 tools in the optional VDI 30 design
(not for torqueDRIVE), while the BTM interface
is a further option.

The Alpha XS lathe benefits from the ultrahigh
speed Fanuc CNC control along with
Harrison’s own developed Alphalink software.
This software makes the Alpha ideal for new
and experienced operators alike.
The flat-bed CNC lathe retains a
conventional element and discussing this, Mr
Solomon says: “We often do low quantities of
work and this machine can be up and cutting in
a matter of minutes and this is a big bonus for
our business.”
Highlighting other features that make the
Harrison Alpha lathe the ‘best’ machine on the
shop-floor at Medley, Mr Solomon continues:
“The machine has never caused us any issues or
problems, so support isn’t a factor we’ve
needed to be concerned about. It’s a very solid
machine that is well built and extremely
reliable. We are often cutting difficult materials
like super duplex and the Alpha XS generates
an excellent surface finish, something that is
credit to the build quality of the machine. It’s an
extremely flexible and versatile machine and
there isn’t anything I wouldn’t feel comfortable
putting on the Alpha.”

school of engineering triples up on productivity
Cardiff University’s School of Engineering
comprises of a group of interlinked
workshops to provide a machining and
development facility for academics, degree
students and, external commercial
customers. As such, it is equipped with state
of the art machine tools, metrology
equipment and, 3D printing systems, which
are operated by a group of highly-skilled
technicians. Its latest investment in three
XYZ ProtoTRAK 2-OP machining centres is
bringing added productivity and versatility
to what is an increasingly busy working
environment.
“The workshops provide a service to
academics in relation to student training and
projects, but we also get involved with
external commercial work on high precision
parts, such as injection moulds and product
development that combines input from
research groups at the university and
Midlands-based Master Abrasives will be
exhibiting the full range of Master® products
at the 2018 GrindTec exhibition in Germany.
Over 575 companies will be representing the
largest selection of grinding solutions.
Master products being exhibited include the
precision product range of grinding wheels
and dressing products as well as mounted
points and carbide burrs.
Master Abrasives recently relaunched the
Master brand of products to include a full
range of high-quality abrasive products used
in manufacturing industries such as
aerospace and automotive. Introducing its
own brand of convolute wheels, unitised
products and quick change discs has
provided industry with a cost-effective
solution to grinding and finishing
applications. This range will be exhibited at
the GrindTec show from stand 5060 in hall 5

The first XYZ 2-OP was installed 18
months ago after Andrew Rankmore saw it
demonstrated on YouTube. This initial
machine has now been complemented by
two more with the three machines now
installed side-by-side in the workshop. The
compact nature of the XYZ 2-OP, with a
footprint of just 760 x 1,220 x 2,565 mm,
meant that the School of Engineering was
able to fit three machines in the space
previously occupied by two bed mills. In
addition to the space saving it now has three
machines that are fully self-contained,
making the working environment cleaner
and safer, as all swarf and coolant remains
within the machine. “The workshop is much
cleaner, making it easier to fully comply with
the latest health and safety legislation, we
also benefit from increased capacity and
versatility as the 2-OPs ProtoTRAK control
allows us to do more than we could
previously. We were already familiar with
ProtoTRAK as we have a number of XYZ
machines across the various workshops, but
with the 2-OP we are making the most of the
DXF converter facility and programming
master abrasives exhibiting
at grindtec 2018
Abrasives, comments “at the GrindTec show
in 2016, we displayed a few of our products
from the Master brand and were able to find
new distributors in a number of countries.
This time, we will be exhibiting the full range
with our updated, modernised brochures
available for visitors to take away. With
attendees from 60 different countries, I’m

According to the Office of National Statistics,
UK manufacturing output is expanding at its
fastest rate since early 2008 after recording a
seventh consecutive month of growth in
November. Demand certainly remains high for
turning technology, both lathes and cutting
tools, as can be seen at the Nuneaton facility of
subcontract machinist Reginson Engineering.
Reginson has recently taken a delivery of six
Hyundai Wia CNC lathes from Ward CNC to
help the company fulfil an ever-increasing
order book for aero-engine components.
Company director Steve Hatch also says
that the extra capacity of the new machines
was urgently needed “and in addition to the
competitive pricing offered by Ward CNC, all
the machines were available on a very quick
delivery – within three weeks”.
The six Hyundia Wia turning machines
(four two-axis L210A models and two E200s
with C axis) were available from stock.
On the other side of Birmingham, another
subcontract machinist, Bromsgrove-based
Davturn, has found that increasing its
production capability by installing a Miyano
BNE-51SY6 turn-mill centre from Citizen
Machinery has added fuel to the burning
desire to expand the five-employee business
into larger premises. Managing director Mark
Birley maintains, such has been the impact of
the new machine that moving premises will
subsequently allow additional Miyano
installations to further increase operational
capability.
“With the 51mm capacity of the Miyano
BNE-51SY6 we have immediately secured a
host of new orders,” he says. One such contract
involves parts for 1000 railway windscreen
wiper sub-assemblies a month. The machine is
already running seven days a week, aroundthe-clock.
“The capability of the machine to hold so
many tools on the two 12-station all-driven
turrets means we can easily accommodate a
suite of common tooling and rarely need to
change a tool holder,” says Mark Birley. “As a
result, resetting is generally quick; most
operations take less than 40 minutes, which
helps keep machine utilisation high.”
Another company recently looking to solve
space issues was Southampton-based MCC
Industries, where the company’s managing
director Mark Cox decided that a mill-turn
machine would be the obvious answer, duly
acquiring a Compact Turn 65 LTY from XYZ
Machine Tools.
“The installation of the mill-turn centre was
going to be a tight fit, as we needed to remove
an inside wall and relocate our stores and
inspection departments,” he explains. “In spite
of this, everything ran smoothly and the
machine was quickly in full production.”
The simple operation of the XYZ Compact
Turn 65 LTY and its Siemens 828D ShopTurn
control also overcame one of Mark Cox’s main
issues: the availability of skilled people.
“Skilled operators can command too high a
salary and often have some poorly conceived

ideas on the best way to do things,” he says.
“This isn’t always the best route for companies
like ours, so we invest heavily in training
people and currently run an apprenticeship
scheme. To bridge any skills shortage, we need
machines that are straightforward to set-up,
without compromising the capability to do
exactly what we need.”
Elsewhere, Mansfield-based Medley
Precision has invested in a new Harrison
Alpha 1550XS CNC lathe from 600 UK for
machining a variety of turned parts used in the
oil and gas, defence, rail and power-generation
sectors.
Medley’s production manager Stuart
Solomon says: “It’s the best machine we have
in the factory. This is because it is remarkably
easy to program as it has its own Alphalink
system that can be programmed on the laptop;
I can draw parts and send them straight into
the machine.”
Alpha XS lathes benefit from a high-speed
Fanuc CNC control along with Harrison’s own
Alphalink software, making the machines
suitable for new and experienced operators
alike.
Due to demand, a number of new turning
machines have been introduced to the UK
market in recent weeks. These include the CTX
2500-700 universal turning machine from
DMG Mori. Designed for machining
components up to 366mm in diameter from
billet, or 76mm from bar, and to a maximum
length of 705mm, the machine is the first in the
company’s range that allows users to turn
grooves up to 12mm wide in CK45 steel and
drill holes to 80mm diameter.
Elsewhere, TDT Technology is now the
official importer, sales distributor and agent
for the Feeler range of FTC turning centres and
slant-bed CNC turning centres. Feeler FTC
machines are aimed at machine shops tasked
with heavy-duty turning operations.
For those seeking VTLs (vertical turning
lathes), the Taiwanese-built Radar Industrial
range can now be sourced through Broadbent
Stanley. Radar VTLs are available in three
model designations – RAL-12, RAL-16 and
RAL-20 – with maximum turning diameters
ranging from 1500 to 2400mm and turning
heights up to 1600mm with a maximum
workpiece weight of 13,000kg on the largest
machine.
Many machinists say that a lathe is little
without the correct tooling, which is why there
continues to be ample development in this
area. A case in point is the new AH8000 insert
series, which has been developed as part of the
TungTurn line from Tungaloy. AH8000 inserts
are said to demonstrate high performance
levels when turning heat-resistant alloys, with
extended tool life credited to the composition
of the grade, which incorporates newly
developed substrates, a multi-layered nano
AlTiN coating featuring high Al content and
Tungaloy’s proprietary PremiumTec surface
technology. According to the company, these
characteristics result in an insert grade that is
at least 20% harder than alternate grades.
With regard to parting and grooving,
among the new market entrants is the Walter
Cut MX tool, which combines four cutting
edges and three geometries in a single system.
Cutting depths of up to 6mm and cutting
widths of 0.8 to 3.25mm are available as
standard, although non-standard sizes and
versions can be supplied via the Walter Xpress
bespoke tooling service.
According to Walter, the efficiency of the
system is such that only one type of cutting
insert is required for both the left- and righthand
toolholder. And if one cutting edge
breaks, work can continue with the three
remaining edges.

A SPARKLING PERFORMANCE
When John Inglis started his fledgling
company back in 1979 it was trading as a
supplier of Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD)
and Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) inserts,
primarily to suit the automotive sector.
However, as modern materials evolved,
Exactaform Cutting Tools changed its focus
and has since become one of the largest
premier manufacturers of PCD cutting tools in
the Europe, supplying global aerospace and
automotive markets.
Until recently Exactaform operated from
multi-unit facilities in Coventry to provide
technically advanced cutting tool solutions for
its customers’ non-ferrous applications. As
John Inglis recalls: “We continually re-invest
in plant, machinery and engineers, to support
the growing global demand for our tooling,
and with 30 per cent year-on-year growth over
the past few years we knew we would exceed
the limits of our previous facilities. So, at the
end of 2015 we acquired this site. Following
the due planning process and architectural
designs honed to meet our exact requirements,
we moved in within a three-week period
during August 2017.”

Two new machine tools were also added to
the extensive list during the move, a DMG
Mori Lasertec and a Rollomatic ShapeSmart
NP3. The Lasertec machine increases the
workshop’s efficiency when cutting PCD
blanks, as John Inglis says: “An operation that
previously took several hours using wire EDM
can now be carried out in just 20 minutes.”
Over 60 highly skilled staff, from tool and
cutter grinders to experienced applications
engineers, support Exactaform’s customer
base. “We focus on diamond tooling for exotic

He continues: “Our growth provides

maintain our small company care. This means

the new 44,000 ft2 facility. The remaining
space has been built ready for planned future
growth, but will be let out on a short-term
business lease in the meantime. The detailed
planning required to move all the multi-axis
CNC tool and cutter grinding machines and
ancillary equipment was significant, and the
task was jointly addressed by directors Peter
Raynor and Jamie White.
“We had to plan and produce cutting tools in
advance, to cover the period of time that each
machine would be in-transit and
recommissioned at the new site. Careful
preparation and hard work by everyone
materials, supplying demanding markets with
high precision, high speed machining
requirements. Our PCD tooling has been
on the shopfloor feature automated loading
and unloading. Peter Raynor says: “Batch
sizes vary, but we can multi load our Walter,
Vollmer and Rollomatic machines to keep
them running around-the-clock, even over the
weekend. It keeps the cost down for the
customer and allows us to meet very tight
delivery timescales.”
As well as new PCD tooling the company also
offers a cost-effective refurbishment service
for its own and competitors tools. Re-tipped
and refurbished tools can also be turned
around quicker if the customer needs a
specific tool back quickly, and it allows
customers to extend the life expectancy of
their investment.

Sentinel TM A50 offer advanced functions to increase
operator comfort and productivity
ESAB Welding and Cutting Products has now
introduced the new Sentinel A50 Air highperformance
automatic welding helmets This
expands the offering following the
introduction of the Sentinel A50 welding
helmet earlier this year. The Sentinel A50 Air
incorporates a PAPR (Powered Air Purifying
Respirator) unit.
The Sentinel’s radical design incorporates
ergonomic headgear and maximum
adjustability to increase productivity,
functionality and usability. The Sentinel A50’s
high-tech features include an almost infinitely
adjustable 5-point headgear, a 100 x 60mm
viewing area, an externally activated Grind
Button, a colour touch screen control panel

comfort from the Sentinel A50’s Halo
adjustable 5-point headgear. The ergonomic,
low-profile design delivers improved weight
distribution with five contact points, including
a central pivot point that allows maximum
head clearance while the helmet is in the up
position. The additional contact points
introduce approximately 500,000 different
combinations of headgear settings, five times
more than standard helmets typically provide.
In addition to the enhanced headgear, the
Sentinel A50 features an advanced high optical
class ADF lens with a 100 x 60mm viewing
area for wider visibility and better spatial
awareness. With its 1/1/1/2 optical class
rating, welders can be assured that the Sentinel
A50 offers a sharp, clear and consistent view of
the weld puddle. True colour technology
enables operators to obtain a better view of the
weld puddle and surrounding area, helping
the operator keep the weld puddle centered in
the joint.
For grinding, a grind application mode is
activated externally on the shell’s temple, so
operators do not have to remove the helmet
when shifting from welding to grinding. The
grind mode is easily accessed, as well as
deactivated, by holding the button for two
seconds. With an external grind mode button,
operators minimise downtime by quickly
switching applications without having to
access an internal switch on the control panel.
The Sentinel A50 features a convex frontloading
cover lens that not only prevents the
buildup of spatter, but also can be easily
removed and replaced. The cover lens, as the
chief consumable on a welding helmet, takes
the most abuse during welding; consistent
spatter, sparks and heat create wear and tear
on the lens and prevent proper viewing. The

producing M1 to M2.5 metric ISO threads DIN

Vollmer Expands UK Team
Vollmer, the cutting tool and saw blade
sharpening experts have now expanded the
UK team to enhance both the service and
sales operations of the Sandiacre based
business.
The manufacturer of precision grinding
and erosion machine tools has employed
Shaun Hill as its latest addition to the service
department whilst longstanding service
engineer Kieran Rosling has moved into the
technical sales department. As a youthful
engineer, Mr Hill has hit the ground running

WNT will join forces with Open Mind, DMG
Mori, Training 2000 and UCLAN, to deliver a
series of advanced machining strategy days
aimed at the aerospace sector in the north
west of England. Taking place at Training
2000’s state-of-the-art Advanced
Manufacturing and Automation Centre
(AMAC) in Blackburn.
Following on from similar milling
strategy days, this series of events will take
place on the 26th and 27th February, but with
a specific focus on the benefits that highperformance
circular segment milling can
bring to the machining of structural and
aerofoil components in the aerospace sector.
Delegates to the events, which take place in
the morning and afternoon on each day, will
see first-hand how the combination of

Industrial Tooling Corporation (ITC) has
booked its largest ever stand for the
forthcoming MACH 2018, the UK’s showpiece
manufacturing event. Recognised as the UK’s
leading cutting tool manufacturer, ITC has

available on Stand H20-650.
In 2017, ITC invested over £1m in new
production equipment. This has given the

In a 5-axIs storM
Located in Silverstone, no more than a short
walk from the world famous race circuit,
Alitech Precision is a subcontract design,
concept delivery and manufacturing
company that specialises in the motorsport
industry. When the subcontract
manufacturer purchased its first 5-axis CNC
machining centre, the only feasible option for
driving the machine was CAM software from
OPEN MIND Technologies.
Alitech Precision opened its doors for
business just three years ago with a HAAS
VF2SS machining centre and a 3-axis CAM
package. As the business evolved, it has
acquired another two HAAS machines, a
larger bed VF4SS with a 4th axis rotary table
and more recently a HAAS DM2 high-speed
machining centre. Whilst the 3-axis CAM
package served the company well, it had
limitations with 4th axis machining. These
limitations were fully realised when the
company installed a fully simultaneous 5-
axis Spinner U-620 vertical machining centre.

AMADA UK has been crowned ‘Large
Employer of the Year 2017’ (sponsored by
Sanctuary Group) at the prestigious
Worcestershire Apprenticeships Awards. At a
glittering awards ceremony in front of 300
people, AMADA was announced as victorious
ahead of a high-profile list of shortlisted
companies from the region. The award is seen
as recognition for the company’s highly
successful apprenticeship programme, which
has been in place since 2006.
At present, AMADA employs 17
apprentices, mostly in engineering, but also
in accountancy and business administration
schemes. The programme supports AMADA
UK’s mantra of “growing our own talent
pool” providing management candidates of
the future with “AMADA DNA”.
AMADA currently offers a Level 3
Advanced Technical Engineering
programme that takes four years to complete.
Apprentices combine rotation around the
various engineering departments at AMADA
UK, with working towards qualifications
that include Mechatronics pathway on the
new Engineering standard, AMADA NVQ
level 3 and, ultimately, a HNC in Mechanical
Engineering. Accountancy apprentices
instead study the AAT qualification.

XYZ Machine Tools has announced the
appointment of Mark Chappell to the role of
Mechanical Engineering Manager, where he
will be responsible for process and product
development involving internal procedures
and working closely with XYZ’s network of
suppliers.
Mark brings with him extensive
experience gained working both in industry
and academia, spending 11 years at
Renishaw, where he held production
engineering and customer training positions,
eventually managing the Renishaw
subsidiary in India, where he undertook
sales and service related roles. Most recently
he worked at the University of Bath on
aerospace engineering projects, and acted as
an interface between the academic and
industrial partners in European Regional
Development Fund projects as well as the
Government and industry-backed Sharing in
Growth programme.
During their time in each department,
apprentices are allocated a mentor who
ensures that training is delivered in line with
the programme. AMADA has been delighted
with the progress of its apprenticeship and
hopes to develop it further in 2018.
Jack Cleaver, who is in year-three of the
scheme and is AMADA UK’s current
Apprentice of the Year, says: “AMADA’s
apprenticeship is beneficial from day one.

The success of each AMADA

Mark’s connection to XYZ goes back
almost 20 years through his time at Renishaw
and the University of Bath, when he worked
with XYZ on calibration projects. Therefore,
when the opportunity to join the Devonbased
machine tool company arose he

Advanced Grinding Solutions (AGS) has booked one of its biggest ever
stands at the forthcoming Mach show where it will be exhibiting six
machines. None of these machines have been exhibited here before and
therefore many UK engineers will be getting their first opportunity to see
this range of advanced grinding and finishing machinery; the widest range
on display at the Mach show.
Rollomatic, a leading Tool Grinding machine manufacturer, is
demonstrating its intention to increase its market presence here by
exhibiting its MP5 machine in the UK for the first time. This machine is
used by many UK cutting tool manufacturers to quickly and easily
cylindrically grind carbide and HSS tool blanks to diameter and form
shape rather than to do so on multi-axis tool grinders whereby the blank
preparation process on those machines takes considerably longer, is more
expensive and is generally not as accurate. Cutting tool and punch
manufacturers are invited to receive a demonstration on the many
advantages of the Rollomatic MP5 and to understand more about
Rollomatic’s wide range of CNC tool grinding machines.
The Rollomatic machine is suitable for the
grinding of components up to 25mm in diameter
and has an integrated robot loader with a
capacity for up to 1,000 parts. The MP5 grinds to
mirror finishes, can control diameter size to +/-
0.0005mm, and runout concentricity within
0.001mm. Fast cycle times are assured due to
Rollomatic’s patented “Pinch & Peel” grinding
process whereby the machine has the ability to
mix a multi-pass rough grinding operation with
a final through-feed pinch grinding pass and, if
required, rough and finish grinding in a single
pass. The MP5 machine is also able to grind nonround
special forms and flats as required for
punch tools. This is the first time that Rollomatic
has exhibited a grinding machine here in the
UK.
Rollomatic’s line up is completed with their
LaserSmart 501 machine that features the
simultaneous 5-axis high precision laser
machining of tools made from ultra-hard
materials such as PCD, CVD, and natural
diamond. The LaserSmart 501 processes multiple
operations such as cutting-edge generation, chip
breaker machining and cylindrical land
machining in one complete set-up and can
produce cutting edges with a radius of under
1um.
Platit are also exhibiting in the UK for the first
time exhibiting their latest Pi111 Plus coating
machine; the first time that any coating machine
of this type has been shown at a UK exhibition.
The Platit machine being demonstrated will be
supported by the presence of Dr Tibor Cselle
who is one of the world’s foremost experts on
coatings for cutting tools and will be exploring
topics such as why tool manufacturers should
invest in their own coating technology and what

are the latest and best coatings for various
milling and drilling applications.
The main application for Platit coating
machines is the coating (usually TiN, TiCN,
CrTin, etc) of end mills, form tools, drills, inserts,
saw blades, and broaches. Platit offers cost
effective solutions in order that tool
manufacturers can coat their own tools instead of
relying upon expensive subcontractors. Tool
manufacturers that are driven to produce tools
that last longer and cut faster also need to
differentiate their products from their
competitors and coating offers them the ability to
do this. Cost saving is only one driver for a tool
manufacturer to invest in a Platit coating
machine; another important reason is to reduce
the time from order to a finished product
because no external sub-contractor for coating
tools can respond as fast as an in-house facility.
Platit do much more than manufacture coating
machines; they are constantly developing new
coatings for their customers and offer a full
consultancy service for their end users to ensure
that they are using the optimum coating for their
applications.
Magnetfinish machines for cutting tools use a
unique process that’s been developed to
dramatically increase the performance and
lifetime of tools which last much longer and can
be ran at higher speeds and feeds after being
processed using Magnetfinish technology.
Abrasive powder is processed by magnets across
the surface of cutters with controlled but variable
directions. The ground surfaces of cutting tools
are polished and the cutting edges are machined
with a precisely defined and fully reproducible
radius of between 3um and 50um.
Magnetfinish will be displaying their latest
MF73 machine with 2 robots that includes for
automatic loading from pallets - combined with
wash, dry and demag. This allows entire batches
of tools to be processed automatically without
any operator involvement. The processing times
for cutting tools are extremely fast with the
average machining time for smaller tools being
in the region of 10 seconds.
High quality tools need perfect cutting edges.
The accuracy of the radius has to be extremely
tight so that a high or low flute does not cause
uneven metal removal, thus affecting part
geometry, surface quality and cutting tool life.
The cutting edges of the flutes must have no
jagged edges, chips, cracks or other irregularities.
The presence of these would mean that the cutter
edges would be subject to early wear as soon as
they contact the workpiece for the first time and
would lead to a rougher surface finish being
created and a shortened tool life. This is the first
time that cutting tool manufacturers will be able
to see a Magnetfinish machine here in the UK.
Tschudin exhibits its new proLine CNC
Centerless Grinding machine that receives its UK
debut and, like other machines within the
Tschudin range, benefits from a unique axis
arrangement that sees the workrest blade being
mounted onto its own CNC axis. This allows
components to be loaded to the centerless
grinding machine outside of the working zone of
the machine. This feature is highly attractive for
those looking to meet health & safety obligations
because otherwise the hand loading of parts to
centerless grinding machines can be dangerous.
The Tschudin proLine machine additionally
features a world-first and patented 4th CNC axis
to automatically move the regulating wheel

vertically in order to eliminate the need to adjust
the workrest blade height to keep part geometry
consistent throughout the entire grinding
process. Thus, operators no longer need to worry
about wheel wear and to manually adjust to
compensate for that and similarly when
changing to a new workpiece the part
programme can be recalled along with the
optimum pre-selected and pre-defined grinding
point and the regulating wheel will position itself
automatically. This is an important advantage as
it allows for much faster set-up times and also for
millions of parts across multiple batches to be
machined to the same pre-defined condition
without the need for operator input.
The Tschudin proLine centerless grinder will
plunge grind parts with a length of up to 280mm
and with diameters from 0.1mm up to 180mm. It
has a 410mm diameter grinding wheel and
weighs 10,000Kg with its bed and spindle blocks
made from natural solid granite.
FLP (Fine Grinding, Lapping and Polishing
Machines) also exhibit in the UK for the first
time. The broad range of FLP machines include
both twin wheel - double sided CNC Lapping
Machines and also single sided Lapping
machines. Visitors to the AGS stand will see a
relevant single sided machine from the latest FLP
range with engineers invited to attend to discuss
their requirements for the face machining of
components.
FLP Double Disc or twin wheel machines
have 7 machines in the range offering a working
disc diameter of between 540 and 1,300mm.
These are fitted with Siemens PLC controls, can
all be offered with full automation via linear or
robotic solutions, and weigh between 7 and 16
tons. These advanced machines are offered as
high-precision versions with granite machine
beds and the latest machine controls, drives and
measurement technology. FLPs machines are in
use across many branches of engineering
including automotive, aerospace, bearings,
optics and ceramics. Applications include the
production of pump, bearing seals, fuel injection
and transmission components. FLP machines
ensure that components are produced to the
closest possible tolerances and at the highest
production rates. Operator friendly simple
machine operation is ensured as is the lowest
cost per machined component. FLP also
manufacture in excess of 15 million parts a year
for customers needing a sub-contract facility.
This comprises flat honing, fine grinding,
lapping, polishing and deburring of components
including full process documentation,
measurements and statistics. FLP will be
exhibiting in the UK for the first time.
Automation is now one of the most important
topics for all manufacturers due to the need to
fully automate production cells to remain
competitive. The Handlingtech range of loaders
is suitably comprehensive with Fanuc or Staubli
robots being used for handling parts from 1g up
to 700 Kg. These are very versatile systems and
are suited for loading a variety of machines.
Various component storage solutions are
available including the use of pallets, bowl
feeders and conveyors. Siemens controls are
used with software links to the donor machines
own control system for seamless handling tasks.
In order to “add value” to the loading equipment
it is common for Handlingtech to incorporate
other processes within their loaders such as
automated measuring and checking via a variety
of gauges and cameras and also automatic
washing, cleaning, drying, deburring, assembly,
laser marking and packing.
Chris Boraston of AGS comments; “Most of
the machines that we sell into the UK are
automated and as each year passes it’s clear that
the need to automate increases further. This
combined with the need for loaders to
incorporate other technologies such as washing,
deburring, measuring or assembly, has meant
that today loaders have become machines in
their own right and it’s now not uncommon for
the loaders that we sell to do more, and therefore
be more complex, than the actual machines that
they service. It’s all about adding value to the
load/unload process to reduce manufacturing
costs and to reduce work in progress”.
Specialists from Krebs & Riedel will be
present on the AGS stand to discuss all grinding
applications and best use of their range of
internal and external grinding wheels. Krebs &
Riedel manufacture high quality conventional,
diamond and CBN abrasives and are constantly
introducing new types of wheels with improved
grain structures and novel bonding systems that
enhance grinding wheel quality and optimise
performance. Companies involved in grinding
are invited to meet the Krebs & Riedel specialists
and to discuss their grinding issues and aims to
improve their grinding processes.
Apart from offering high stock removal rates
to improve cycle times, combined with more
consistent part quality by avoiding micro-cracks
in the surface of sensitive parts, another large
benefit of using Krebs wheels lies in large cost
savings made possible by reducing wheel
dressing requirements. This has the three major
advantages of lower wheel waste due to less
dressing, faster cycle times as wheels can be kept
grinding longer in between dressing them, and
also a reduced spend on expensive diamond
rollers.
Krebs and Riedel are developing new wheels
all the time and those are added to the existing
collection of over 60,000 different wheel types
that are available from them. With such a huge
variety of wheels then of course choosing the
correct and most efficient wheel is no easy task
but customers can draw upon the experience of
Krebs application engineers to arrive at the best
one for the customer’s specific application.

The latest addition to the high specification
Wele range of machining centres is the
HMC500 horizontal spindle version which
combines high stability with positioning
accuracy of +/- 0.005 mm in X, Y and Z axes
and a repeatability of +/- 0.003 mm over full
working strokes of 640 mm in X, 610 mm in Y
and 680 mm in Z. With 60 m/min rapid
traverse rates in each axis, positioning times
are reduced contributing to shorter cycle
times and higher levels of productivity.
Launched in the UK by 2D CNC
Machinery of Hinckley, the 500 mm twinpallet
machine (with option of 400 mm pallet
size) has a maximum workpiece capacity
within a cylinder diameter of 750 mm by 900

seven grades of substrate and three
chipbreaker geometries has been developed
by Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal to meet
specific machining demands where lower
power machines or less stable application
conditions are encountered.
The new inserts bring processing benefits
with the ability to maintain high levels or
surface finish and each insert has a high rake
with a curved wave form to the
cutting edge. With a greater
width to the insert this creates a
more stable seating to support the

The seven grades: ACP100,
200 and 300, ACK200 and 300 and
ACM 200 and 300 can cut to
depths up to 5 mm. ACP100 has
the latest ultra-smooth Sumitomo
‘FF’ chemical vapour deposition
(CVD) coating giving excellent
wear and thermal resistance for
high speed and light cutting of
steel. ACP200 uses Sumitomo’s
‘Super ZX’ physical vapour
mm high with a full B-axis. The B-axis has
1,600 Nm of torque and a positioning
accuracy of 10 arc secs with a repeatability of
6 arc secs. It features a Zero-Clamping
system via four radial pre-tensioned tapers to
ensure perfect alignment. Index times are 1.5

secs.
The built-in 22 kW, BIG-PLUS dualcontact
spindle with high rigidity and high
orders of runout control has a speed range
between 40 and 15,000 revs/min with up to
167 Nm of torque available through a low
and high range transmission. Spindle
acceleration and deceleration is with 3.3 secs.
In order to minimise deformation caused
through variable cutting forces or thermal
effects, the spindle head is mounted between
twin box-type gantry columns and the cast
iron bed is supported via three point
levelling to further minimise distortion.
There is a 60 tool magazine with 3 secs
chip-to-chip time capable of carrying tools up
to 80 mm diameter or 160 mm dia with
adjacent pockets left empty. Maximum tool
length is 400 mm. Control is via Fanuc 0i-

lines, Guhring used the recent EMO exhibition
in Hannover to further enhance both its
reputation and product portfolio. The arrival
of the next generation of PIONEX thread
formers incorporate a new design that
requires 30% less torque than previous
product lines.
The R&D engineers at Guhring have
optimised the groove, the polygon shape and
the surface preparation of its threading series
and the result is the extraordinary new
PIONEX tapping line. A revolutionary
geometric change in the tunnels of the thread
former optimises the contact between the tool
and component surface and drastically
reduces the cutting forces with an extremely
smooth cutting action.
This enhanced design reduces the cutting
temperature as well as the torque and the axial
forces by up to 30%. The result for the end
user is a massive improvement in tool life,
improved reliability and consistency as well
as improved thread quality and precision.
The PIONEX taps are manufactured from a
powder metallurgical steel compound that
has an extremely high wear resistance whilst a
special TiCN surface treatment provides

a new Guhring polishing technique that

smoother and more polished than ever before.
The result of these enhancements further
prolong tool life and enhance surface quality.
The new developments with the PIONEX
geometry are noted in the groove depth and
width that are both increased to transport
more lubrication to the focal area of the thread
former. Another key feature of the new
PIONEX is the innovative shape of the
polygon. By re-aligning the geometry of the
decisive operating radius that is the focal
contact point between the tool and the
workpiece, the torque requirement and the

MAPAL has now introduced its new UNIBASE-
M tool dispensing system for the optimal
storage and management of tools, components
and accessories. With the focus on ease of use,
the new system can be configured according to
customer requirements. This also applies to all
the new variants in the UNIBASE-M range.
If large and heavy tools are assembled on the
shop-floor, but not immediately required on the
machine tool, they should be stored away to
prevent potential damage. Cabinet drawers
with a maximum load-bearing capacity of 75kg
are not ideally suited for this as they often reach
their capacity limits when loaded with several
completely assembled tools. Sometimes, on
account of its length, the tool can only be stored

OPEN MIND has optimized 3D roughing
processes when machining with high feed
cutters. The step-over distance can be calculated
from the scallop height measured against the
high feed cutter geometry. A special tool path
movement removes rest material from corners
when there is a very high lateral infeed.
Intelligent cut division and optimized toolpaths
provide greater process safety for remaining
thin ridges.
Machining marks are often visible at
transitions between steep and flat areas, or at
the extents of rest machining regions. The new
‘soft overlap’ function in hyperMILL® greatly
reduces this effect. The milling tool is briefly
lifted to blend the milling paths into one
another. This prevents visible transitions from
horizontally and this presents a risk to the
cutting edges. It is with situations like these in
mind that MAPAL has introduced the new
UNIBASE-V expandable cabinet. The new
UNIBASE-V has up to four electronically
lockable vertical drawers and each of the
automatically opening drawers has a maximum
load-bearing capacity of a generous 600kg.
These drawers are equipped with loadable tool
holders designed according to the customer’s
specifications. The vertical drawers are
compatible with existing UNIBASE-M systems
and are controlled via the master unit.
The new UNIBASE-C cabinets for controlled
individual tool dispensing complete the storage
module. A large number of small and single
parts can be stored in a UNIBASE-C cabinet in a
compact area. When an item is selected, only its
individual compartment opens. This reduces
the risk of theft and optimises inventory
control. The UNIBASE-C is available in
standard versions and it can be used as a standalone
solution or it can be incorporated into
existing UNIBASE-M systems.
MAPAL has developed new software for the
UNIBASE-M tool dispensing system that
connects the tool dispensing system to existing
ERP systems. It carries out permanent,
cad/cam suite further expanded
being created and results in better surface
quality.
The CAD module in version 2018.1 of the
OPEN MIND CAM suite boasts a particularly
time-saving solution: ‘global fitting.’ Global
Fitting creates a single cohesive face from a set
of multiple faces. Many CAM strategies can
then follow the ISO u-v orientation of the
surface patch, increasing the application of
these CAM strategies.
The hyperCAD®-S Electrode automates the
construction and manufacturing of electrodes
for die-sinking. Users can simply derive their
electrodes from the face to be die-sunk within
the component geometry – no specialist
expertise is required. OPEN MIND has
enhanced this module with functions such as
the ‘rotational electrode,’ which facilitates the
circular placement of multiple electrode
geometries with different spark gaps on a
holder. This saves users time during milling
and eroding. Integrating an interface with the
CERTA Systems Job Manager is important for
establishing continuity in the electrode process.
The hyperMILL® VIRTUAL Machining
simulation solution creates a perfect virtual
rendering of reality in the machine based on NC
data. Built with Industry 4.0 in mind, there is a

igus has introduced a unique strain relief
system for energy chains that replaces the cable
tie-wraps that are commonly used in industry.
Cables and hoses are simply inserted into a
honeycomb, called the CFU, and then closed.
Compared to cable tie-wraps or other strain
relief solutions, the engineer can save about 80
percent assembly and engineering time.
Once the cables and hoses are inserted into
the CFU and closed, the outer walls of the
honeycomb cavities lie gently and uniformly
around the cables. The honeycomb system is
assembled in seconds and is also extremely
flexible, as new cables can be inserted or
replaced by hand.
The flush finish with the e-chain mounting
bracket, enables the CFU to be used both in
unsupported and gliding applications. The
design also allows easy scaling for individual
chain widths. Different cables are inserted into
the vertical rows of the CFU, the system is
closed and then screwed at the top.
With the honeycomb strain relief, the
designer can already plan the chain and strain
relief before the exact cable assignment is
known. This can be changed easily in the later
stages. Together with the new separator system
for a custom-made interior separation, the
honeycomb strain relief makes the E4.1L the
easiest to fill energy chain in the market.

adapters for all common machine tool
interfaces such as HSK, SK and BT.
For maximum convenience, torque values
of all the BIG KAISER-made collet chucks
that are available from ITC are pre-set. The
user can, however, set the torque to any
value of their own choosing from 4 to 80Nm.
The minimum read value is 0.01Nm at less
than 10Nm, and 0.1Nm at 10Nm or more.
The Torque Fit includes an error LED to
indicate overtightening.

Wycombe-based Hurco Europe states, “A
modern-day subcontract engineering business
must focus on the immediate order book, but
