NEWS NEWS NEWS school of engineering triples up on productivity Cardiff University’s School of Engineering comprises of a group of interlinked workshops to provide a machining and development facility for academics, degree students and, external commercial customers. As such, it is equipped with state of the art machine tools, metrology equipment and, 3D printing systems, which are operated by a group of highly-skilled technicians. Its latest investment in three XYZ ProtoTRAK 2-OP machining centres is bringing added productivity and versatility to what is an increasingly busy working environment. “The workshops provide a service to academics in relation to student training and projects, but we also get involved with external commercial work on high precision parts, such as injection moulds and product development that combines input from research groups at the university and Midlands-based Master Abrasives will be exhibiting the full range of Master® products at the 2018 GrindTec exhibition in Germany. Over 575 companies will be representing the largest selection of grinding solutions. Master products being exhibited include the precision product range of grinding wheels and dressing products as well as mounted points and carbide burrs. Master Abrasives recently relaunched the Master brand of products to include a full range of high-quality abrasive products used in manufacturing industries such as aerospace and automotive. Introducing its own brand of convolute wheels, unitised products and quick change discs has provided industry with a cost-effective solution to grinding and finishing applications. This range will be exhibited at the GrindTec show from stand 5060 in hall 5 and technical representatives will be available to discuss how these products can improve productivity in various applications. Paul Batson, Managing Director of Master industry,” says the School of Engineering’s Mechanical Workshops Supervisor Andrew Rankmore. “The main reasons for choosing the XYZ 2-OP machines, was our need to produce better quality products in terms of the accuracy and quality of the parts we manufacture, as well as improving productivity.” The first XYZ 2-OP was installed 18 months ago after Andrew Rankmore saw it demonstrated on YouTube. This initial machine has now been complemented by two more with the three machines now installed side-by-side in the workshop. The compact nature of the XYZ 2-OP, with a footprint of just 760 x 1,220 x 2,565 mm, meant that the School of Engineering was able to fit three machines in the space previously occupied by two bed mills. In addition to the space saving it now has three machines that are fully self-contained, making the working environment cleaner and safer, as all swarf and coolant remains within the machine. “The workshop is much cleaner, making it easier to fully comply with the latest health and safety legislation, we also benefit from increased capacity and versatility as the 2-OPs ProtoTRAK control allows us to do more than we could previously. We were already familiar with ProtoTRAK as we have a number of XYZ machines across the various workshops, but with the 2-OP we are making the most of the DXF converter facility and programming master abrasives exhibiting at grindtec 2018 Abrasives, comments “at the GrindTec show in 2016, we displayed a few of our products from the Master brand and were able to find new distributors in a number of countries. This time, we will be exhibiting the full range with our updated, modernised brochures available for visitors to take away. Mills CNC, the exclusive distributor of Doosan machine tools in the UK and Ireland, has reported impressive sales results for 2017. As reported 12 months ago, the company ended 2016 on a real high - bolstered by ‘better than expected’ sales performance in Quarters 3 and 4 and, according to managing director, Kevin Gilbert, “…we haven’t looked back since then and have maintained this momentum throughout 2017.” Key to understanding Mills’ sales performance over the last 12 months is the enduring popularity of the company’s (Doosan) Lynx and Puma lathe and DNM vertical machining centre ranges amongst component manufacturers. Explains Kevin Gilbert: “Our Lynx and Puma lathes, and our DNM 3-axis vertical machining centres have a wide appeal - and our recent decision to introduce models equipped with the latest Siemens controls, has had a significant and positive impact on sales.” Introducing new Doosan machine tools into the market is custom and practice for Mills, and 2017 was no exception.
