CUTTING TOOLS
Sentinel TM A50 offer advanced functions to increase
operator comfort and productivity
ESAB Welding and Cutting Products has now
introduced the new Sentinel A50 Air highperformance
automatic welding helmets This
expands the offering following the
introduction of the Sentinel A50 welding
helmet earlier this year. The Sentinel A50 Air
incorporates a PAPR (Powered Air Purifying
Respirator) unit.
The Sentinel’s radical design incorporates
ergonomic headgear and maximum
adjustability to increase productivity,
functionality and usability. The Sentinel A50’s
high-tech features include an almost infinitely
adjustable 5-point headgear, a 100 x 60mm
viewing area, an externally activated Grind
Button, a colour touch screen control panel
and a front-loading convex cover lens that
comes in different colour options and changes
in 10 seconds (view video).
“The technology involved mirrors the
technology we use everyday, such as on our
smart phones,” says Guy Shelverton, Global
Product Manager, ESAB. “Operators can now
use this technology to make their lives easier
and more productive in the workplace.”
Operators will immediately notice greater
comfort from the Sentinel A50’s Halo
adjustable 5-point headgear. The ergonomic,
low-profile design delivers improved weight
distribution with five contact points, including
a central pivot point that allows maximum
head clearance while the helmet is in the up
position. The additional contact points
introduce approximately 500,000 different
combinations of headgear settings, five times
more than standard helmets typically provide.
In addition to the enhanced headgear, the
Sentinel A50 features an advanced high optical
class ADF lens with a 100 x 60mm viewing
area for wider visibility and better spatial
awareness. With its 1/1/1/2 optical class
rating, welders can be assured that the Sentinel
A50 offers a sharp, clear and consistent view of
the weld puddle. True colour technology
enables operators to obtain a better view of the
weld puddle and surrounding area, helping
the operator keep the weld puddle centered in
the joint.
For grinding, a grind application mode is
activated externally on the shell’s temple, so
operators do not have to remove the helmet
when shifting from welding to grinding. The
grind mode is easily accessed, as well as
deactivated, by holding the button for two
seconds. With an external grind mode button,
operators minimise downtime by quickly
switching applications without having to
access an internal switch on the control panel.
The Sentinel A50 features a convex frontloading
cover lens that not only prevents the
buildup of spatter, but also can be easily
removed and replaced. The cover lens, as the
chief consumable on a welding helmet, takes
the most abuse during welding; consistent
spatter, sparks and heat create wear and tear
on the lens and prevent proper viewing. The
Four cutting edges and three geometries
in one innovative groving system
The innovative Walter Cut MX from tooling
expert Walter GB is a grooving and parting off
tool that combines all the advantages of
previous systems – having four cutting edges
and three geometries in a single system.
Cutting depths of up to 6 mm and cutting
widths of 0.8 mm to 3.25 mm are available as
standard - non-standard sizes and versions can
be supplied via the Walter Xpress bespoke
tooling service – and the tooling’s precise
centre height and precision-ground cutting
edges make the system ideal for precision
grooves, circlip grooves and small diameters.
The efficiency of the system is such that
only one type of cutting insert is required for
both the left- and the right-hand toolholder.
And if one cutting edge breaks, work can
continue with the remaining edges.
Each of the indexable inserts boasts four
precision-ground cutting edges and is
available in three chip former types, GD8, CF5
or RF5, the CF5 sintered chip geometry
enabling superb chip control at light feeds;
plus the proven Tiger·tec Silver PVD cutting
tool materials.
The self-aligning, tangential clamping
system and the dowel pin location in the insert
seat provide stability, which in turn allows for
high repeatable accuracy and process
reliability. It also prevents the inserts from
being incorrectly fitted.
spherical quick-release cover lens contains two
switches — one fixed, one push-button — for
one-click removal. Replacement can be
achieved in 10 seconds, minimising any time
spent changing parts. The spherical shape of
the cover lens also reduces the small recesses
and gaps where spatter collects and
penetrates, particularly in overhead welding.
Operators will appreciate the Sentinel
A50’s full touchscreen with color backlit
display that makes it easy to read in low-light
environments. The helmet’s interface is sharp,
intuitive and accessed with only one button.
The simple interface design permits operators
to pick up the helmet, turn on the screen and
activate everything without requiring a user
manual.
The helmet’s digital lens technology also
gives the welder full control to adjust shade (5
to 13) and sensitivity. The interface contains
eight memory settings with precision for any
application or process. The Sentinel A50
weighs 640 g and features a high impact
resistant nylon shell. The Sentinel A50 has the
best combination of performance features and
price.
New tools for
milling small
threads
A new thread milling system, designated
DCG, has been developed by Horn for
producing M1 to M2.5 metric ISO threads DIN
13 - 20. The solid carbide, single-row, coated
milling cutters, which have extremely sharp
edges and are suitable for universal use, are
available as standard for producing a thread
length up to 2 x D. They demonstrate their
special capabilities and efficiency when
machining steels, stainless steels, cast iron,
non-ferrous metals and in particular hard-tocut
materials used in the medical sector, for
example.
DCG solid carbide mills have been proving
themselves in the production of clean, high
quality threads from M3 to M12 for many
years. As the single-row milling cutters can be
used for different pitches, a high degree of
flexibility is provided.
