Rangi Ruru Girls’ School tasted success at the South Island rowing club championships in Twizel at the weekend. The school
brought home six golds, a silver and a bronze during the two-day event at Lake Ruataniwha. Millie Knight and the Rangi
Bus lounge
hooligans
have
‘quietened
down’ –
community
constable
• By Emily O’Connell
ANTI-SOCIAL behaviour at the
Riccarton bus lounge has slowed
down, according to a community
constable.
The lounge, on the corner of
Riccarton Rd and Division St, has
been plagued by misbehaving young
people since it opened in December
2015.
A working party, consisting of
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community
Board members, business
and landowners, police, community
groups and residents’ association
representatives, made 19 recommendations
to help solve the issues.
They included introducing an
anti-loitering bylaw, playing music
in Division St to attract more people
to the area, and changing the current
bus lounge wi-fi policy.
But before the measures have been
put in place, the problems appears
to have “quietened down”.
Constable Aaron Thorn said
“things have been really quiet
around Division St at the bus exchange.”
THERE’S ONE nice, happy ending story
on page 4 today.
Hank, the border collie cross we
featured over Christmas has found a
home.
Hank was on our front page promoting
the Dogwatch Sanctuary Trust’s 2018 calendar. He wasn’t in it
– only canines that have been rehomed make the cut.
Hank had been at Dogwatch since October, and the people
who run the deserving organisation needed a family with the
patience to take him – Hank has a few quirks.
That’s not uncommon in dogs that end up in the pound;
they’ve usually been pushed from pillar to post before they get
there.
So a new start for the two year-old, who also has a new
name: Gus. Good stuff. – Barry Clarke
Chapel surprise for St Margaret’s
• By Julia Evans
AFTER 20 years without, St
Margaret’s College has a new
chapel.
And the building’s
connection to the school is
almost 90-years-old.
Waiau’s Satterthwaite family
moved a chapel from their farm
to the Merivale college grounds
in the early hours of Wednesday
morning, as a gift to departing
executive principal Gillian
Simpson.
“My mother-in-law, Diana
Satterthwaite, went to St
Margaret’s and she’s 90 now
. . . there’s a lot of history,”
chapel owner Gina
Satterthwaite (nee Gough) said.
Before the chapel was moved
to Waiau, it was the local
church in Rotherham, where
Diana Satterthwaite grew up,
she said.
Mrs Satterthwaite said there
had been a girl from her family,
or her husband’s family, at St
Margaret’s every decade since
her mother-in-law began.
“Literally, people in the
family from five-years-old to
90-years-old have been a part
of the school,” she said. That
included herself, her daughters,
her mother and aunts.
The Waiau chapel was also
where she and her husband
were married.
“But the main reason is that
it’s just nice to know that it’s
going to be enjoyed
. . . it’s so important to me
that St Margaret’s gave me the
opportunity to help like this,”
she said.
The college has been without
a chapel for more than 20 years.
One of Mrs Simpson’s goals was
to get a chapel back on school
grounds before she left at the
end of term two.
“I have been looking for a
small chapel for 10 years and
since the major rebuild we had
put the project on the backburner,”
she said.
But the school organised the
chapel to be moved without
Mrs Simpson’s knowledge; she
didn’t know until it arrived.
“This was a complete surprise
RELOCATION:
The chapel
spent more
than an hour
on the back
of two trucks
driving from
Waiau to St
Margaret’s
College on
Papanui Rd.
and presented to me as a fait
accompli,” Mrs Simpson said.
The building had to be split
in half and loaded onto two
separate trucks before being
reassembled on site.
She said it was an “immense
honour” to see her dream
become a reality right at the end
of her tenure.
It will be renamed Te Whare
Hauora (The House of Wellbeing).
Accountability needed
Yaldhurst
Rural
Residents’
Association
chairwoman
Sara Harnett-
Kikstra
talks about
quarries in the west and
who makes decisions on
them
IN A recent interview with
Environment Canterbury’s
new chairman, Steve Lowndes,
he stated that the public
perception of ECan was not very
favourable, but ECan is bound
by Government policy.
In part he is correct, in that
Gerry Brownlee the Minister
for Earthquake Recovery at the
time of the District Plan sent
a directive to the city council
to allow for a more permissive
regime. (As an aside, as soon
as this regime entered the leafy
suburb of Ilam with a potential
funeral parlour, he is calling for
a judicial review.)
However, Government policy
does not include allowing the
aquifers to become contaminated
nor does it include allowing
residents to develop silicosis
because of the proximity, and
number of quarries. Neither
does it include allowing the
entire south-west rural area
to become one great quarry
pit.
In recent times there has
been a multitude of resource
consent applications for quarries
and all of them successful
because ECan’s and city
council’s interpretation of policy
and the new rules appears to
be one of we must approve the
consent.
The recent decision by Judge
Borthwick to overturn the consent
in the Harewood Gravels
case appears to suggest their
interpretation is misguided.
Her decision emphasised the
cumulative effects of so many
quarries and the social impact
on communities.
Perhaps it’s time for decisionmakers
to become accountable
which may turn their minds
to stop perpetuating decisions
which have a major impact on
communities. In the meantime,
the train wreck rolls on.
The bright, lovely and playful
Aurora Centre repair work delayed
• By Julia Evans
UPGRADE AND repair work
on the Aurora Centre will not
be finished for a month longer
than anticipated.
The performing arts centre,
on the site of Burnside High
School, has been undergoing
weather tightness and earthquake
damage repairs since the
beginning of January.
But due to the complexity of
the work, the building which
was expected to be complete by
February, won’t be open until
at least March
with a final
date yet to be
confirmed,
principal Phil
Holstein said.
He said while
the repair work
was going on, Phil Holstein
the school was
also taking the opportunity to
spend time doing “necessary”
upgrades to the centre.
The school has spent $2 million
on the upgrades, which
includes a new air conditioning
system and refreshing the paint
job on the building’s exterior,
as well as some smaller internal
work.
“It was definitely time to
upgrade . . . I’d heard from a few
people the heating and cooling
longer than expected.
definitely needed work on it,”
Mr Holstein said.
But with the delay, he said
there would be some interruption
when students returned
from the summer holiday at the
start of February.
“We tried to start and finish
it over the holiday to minimise
disruption . . . but with this kind
of work you always anticipate
delays,” he said.
Work on the 700-seat performing
arts centre is part of
a $24 million repair and redevelopment
plan at the school,
which includes several of the
school’s other buildings.
Once completed, Mr Holstein
said the board would be able
to begin “the master planning
stage” of the school’s post-quake
redevelopment.
“We’re one of the last schools
in the city to start on our master
plan,” he said.
Mr Holstein said the upgrade
work on the Aurora Centre is
not only important to the school
but the wider community too.
The building was a key space
following the February 22, 2011,
earthquake. It was one of the
only spaces to host events left in
the city.
“It’s a significant building
for Burnside but also for the
city post-quake ,” Mr Holstein
said.
• By Julia Evans
MOTOR-CYCLISTS using
a pedestrian-only Fendalton
alleyway as a shortcut may soon
have to take the long route.
City council staff have investigated
possible options to deter
motorcyclists and cyclists and
improve safety of pedestrians
using the alleyway on Coldstream
Court and Barlow St
following concerns raised by
residents.
Residents complained to the
city council last January and
two bollards were installed.
Resident Hamish Martin
wrote to the city council
describing an accident he saw
between two young cyclists.
In a report to the Fendalton-
Waimairi-Harewood Community
Board, city council staff
said there are several possible
option for the board to consider.
Staff said the preferred option
was to improve visibility between
people nearing the access
way by lowering the height of
the two boundary fences.
Building robot to beat beach mess
• By Julia Evans
E WEN Wong doesn’t want to
grow up in a world polluted by
plastic.
So the 15-year-old Burnside
High School student has begun
designing a robot to detect
plastic in beaches, rivers and the
ocean.
“While it’s still in early stages,
I’ve already had a lot of support
and direction from experts like
Brendon and Chris from NIWA,
Brendon from ThisDesign
and April from Limitless who
have been super keen to push
my project along and offer
their expertise which is really
exciting,”
E Wen said.
She’s named her robot BIRD,
which stands for Biomimicry
Identification Robot Device and
fortunately it’s also shaped like
a bird.
“As part of this, I am
designing an unmanned aerial
vehicle capable of detecting and
locating macro-plastics such
as plastic bags and bottle tops
using either laser diodes or
machine learning software to
rapidly autonomously identify
rubbish from a camera feed,” she
said.
The plastic will then be tagged
and linked to a crowd sourced
clean-up app that guides rubbish
collectors to dispose of it, she
said.
“It’s only in the design stage
at the moment, but it’s pretty
cool,” she said. “I like the way
technology can be used to help
the environment.”
E Wen has been working
on the designs for her BIRD
through the advocacy
WESTERN NEWS
FUTURE: 15-year-old
E Wen Wong is developing a
organisation she set up at school,
P.S Our Beaches.
“It’s all about spreading
awareness about the
environment and climate
change,” she said.
Her passion for the
environment has been there for
as long as she can remember.
But E Wen said it was when she
was 10-years-old she started
A HALSWELL resident
is frustrated the
Kennedy’s Bush track
has been closed for
almost a year and she’s
not really sure why.
The track, which has
been closed since the
Port Hills fires in February
last year, was due
to reopen on December 31.
Halswell Community Project
chairwoman Chrys
Horn (left) feels the
track has been closed
“too long.”
But Christchurch
Transport Operations
Centre manager Ryan
Cooney said the city
council and private
landowner “have been
discussing the timely
removal of the privately
owned trees.”
He said damaged trees need
to be removed before the track
reopens.
Mr Cooney said it is now due
to reopen on March 31.
But Dr Horn doubts it will
open then.
“The worry for me is not that
it’s closed but when is it going
to open. We’ve already been
through one date. And I’m wondering
what else is going on here
behind the scenes,” she said.
Mr Cooney said the trail,
property, was delayed due to a
wet winter.
“Unfortunately, the wet weather
last year resulted in excess
sediment running off the hills
into the Hoon Hay stream as a
result of early logging attempts
so work was paused,” he said.
Dr Horn said she would “hate
to see it closed forever.”
“It’s something I’ve used all
my life and I don’t want to lose
access up there,” she said.
Based on previous years, Constable
Thorn said “things would
ramp up a bit” during the school
holidays, but he had not received
any complaints from retailers.
Although he isn’t exactly sure
why, Constable Thorn felt having
The Pawn Shop on the corner of
Division St made the area less attractive
for troublemakers.
He also said it was possible they
had “found other places to go.”
However, he said there had been
some security changes in the bus
Community board deputy
chairwoman Helen Broughton
said as long as business owners
were happy, the board was also
happy. She was “delighted this
Mrs Broughton said a
She said the recommendations
Straight sets win
• By Andrew King
PAPANUI’S DIEGO Quispe-
Kim overcame Fendalton’s Liam
Barrett in straight sets to lift the
12 and under national title on
Thursday.
Played at Wilding Park, Linwood,
the tournament saw competitors
from all over the country
vie for singles and doubles titles.
Hillview Christian School’s
Duncan McCall beat Auckland’s
Jack Chapman in a play-off for
third, 6-1, 3-6, 8-10, meaning
Christchurch players took all
three spots on the podium.
Diego, who plays for the
Waimairi club, went through the
tournament without dropping a
set, showing great ability to get
past Liam, 6-3, 6-2, in the final.
He beat Wellington’s Tom Bevan,
6-2, 6-1, in the opening round
before sweeping past Auckland’s
Jamie MacKenzie, 6-4, 6-2.
Diego then met South
Brighton’s Ethan Cooke in the
quarter-final and cruised to victory,
6-2, 6-2.
He played Jack in the semifinal
beating him, 6-2, 6-0.
Te Kura Hagley Park club
head coach Hugo Nurse-Strang
trained Liam and said it was a
fantastic final, played between
two very good young players.
It was great to have Cantabrians
in the top three. I don’t think
that has happened before, we are
normally lucky to have one in
the final, so this is really great,”
he said.
CHAMPION: Papanui’s Diego
Quispe-Kim won the 12 and
under national tennis title.
Diego also played in the doubles
with Auckland’s Rion Suga,
but was beaten in the quarterfinal,
6-0, 6-0, by Nelson’s
Finn Burridge and Auckland’s
Dominik Wijntjes.
St Martins School’s Ruby
Young and Hutt Valley’s Rosearna
Stairmand were beaten by
Auckland’s Kristina Bogomazova
and Sasha Situe in straight sets,
6-0, 6-1, in the girls doubles final.
Jack Chapman and Nelson’s
Harry Pugh won the boys doubles
against Auckland’s Lev Gorb
and Jamie MacKenzie, 2-6, 6-3,
10-4.
Sasha beat Kristina in the girls
final, 6-0, 6-1.
More than just a taxi
The elderly and those with
disabilities often find it difficult to
access health appointments or take
care of shopping, things that can be
physically and mentally challenging for
them.
Helen Beddard understands how
difficult it can be. When her
mother’s mobility was compromised
by an injury, Helen stepped into
the role of driver and companion
where she learned first-hand, the
importance of someone retaining their
independence.
It was this experience that sparked
the idea of a driving service that went
further than a taxi or shuttle provider.
Lift Companion Driving is an
individual, personalised service
that helps the elderly, people with
disabilities, and parents who need
their children safely transported to
an activity such as a dance class or
afterschool programme.
Helen takes her clients where
they need to go, filling the role of
companion and assistant, a role that
gives her considerable satisfaction as
she is helping those less mobile regain
their independence.
“It’s a privilege to do something
positive for the community by making
someone’s life easier. You meet the
best people. They put a lift in my day
as much as I put a lift in their day,”
says Helen.
Lift Companion Driving is a licensed
transport service with a high emphasis
on safety right down to the vehicle
used. As driver, Helen is passenger
endorsed, has been police checked,
and has full first aid certificates.
Lift Companion Driving is a caring,
high quality bespoke yet affordable
service that assists clients to retain
their independence so they are less
reliant on family and friends.
Hundreds upon hundreds of children
begin their educational journey.
Naturally they will want to look their
and a quality haircut is part of that look,
which gives them confidence and helps
them feel ‘part of the crew’.
Once upon a time Mum just clipped away
Even pre-schoolers have a sense of fashion
At JUST CUTS in The Hub, all the
Belly dancing fun
for men & women
The new term of Beginners belly dance
classes at Kashmir Belly Dance in South
Brighton starts in February. The class will
be on Monday evenings from February 12
at 6.30pm, while a mixed class (men and
women) will be on Thursday evenings from
February 15 at 7.30pm.
Anyone enrolling and pre-paying by
February 10 will receive a $20 discount.
Enrolments are through the website, www.
bellyraqs.co.nz.
The eight, 75-minute classes comprise an
hour of dance movement and 15 minutes of
background information on belly dancing,
with videos and music.
With one husband and wife already signed
up, instructor Kashmir is encouraging more
men to join the mixed class.
“Belly dancing is not just for women,” she
says. “It is fun and enjoyable for everyone.”
Belly dancing can also be a step on the way
to a new fitness regime, and participants get
to know how their body works through the
various movements, Kashmir says.
Kashmir Belly Dance is located at 8
Drake Street, South Brighton.
Traditional
social dancing
of Scotland
For hundreds of years Scottish Country
Dancing was enjoyed at every level of
society, from royal ballrooms to village halls.
Over the last 100 years it has been developed
to maintain its unique style and music, while
keeping pace with the modern world.
There are Scottish Country Dance clubs
on every continent of the world, which is
testament to the universal appeal of the
dancing. Here in the Christchurch area there
are nine clubs providing the opportunity to
enjoy this pastime Monday to Thursday, plus
a children’s class on Saturday mornings and
combined dances most Saturday evenings.
The health benefits of Scottish Country
Dancing are documented. The physical
movements exercise the body. The patterns
of the dances are great for keeping the brain
on its toes. The music, which lifts the spirits,
and the social interaction complete the
package.
Just step on the mat…
This is the advice given to people who
want to learn aikido, Aikido Shinryukan
Canterbury’s chief instructor Andrew
Williamson says.
“It really is that easy. Of course, every
new student is naturally apprehensive about
beginning a Japanese martial art – we have
all ‘been there’. But to begin you need to take
that first step and it really is not that scary.”
Beginners are eased into training through
basics classes.
“Step by step we build your knowledge.
We focus on beginners understanding the
fundamentals of aikido so they can enjoy
developing their skills. Anyone can do
WORKOUT,
SWIM, RELAX
aikido regardless of age or fitness,” Andrew
says.
“We want students to develop technically
and physically as quickly as they are
capable. We can then introduce them to
more advanced training and international
instructors and build on the total knowledge
base held in our group.”
Aikido Shinryukan Canterbury offers daily
classes for adults and children in Burnside
and Linwood.
For February, beginners may train
for just $20. For more information
Exercise
sharpens young
adult brains
Regular physical activity improves brain function
even in young adults considered in their prime
and at the height of cognitive ability, according to
a University of Otago study.
A body of research already exists showing
aerobic exercise improves brain function
in older adults, but there is a limited
amount of literature on how it affects
young adults.
The Otago researchers, led by
Department of Psychology Senior
Lecturer Dr Liana Machado, set out to
test the oft-held belief that the brains of
young adults in their prime might not
benefit as much as older people from
regular sustained exercise.
They took 52 tertiary students, aged
between 18 to 30, and put them through
a series of cognitive tests on a computer
while measuring oxygen availability in
the frontal lobe of their brains, as well as
their self-reported exercise frequency.
Dr Machado says their “surprising”
findings, just published online in the
journal Psychophysiology, show that
both blood supply to the brain and
cognitive functioning appear to benefit
from regular exercise in young adults.
“This provides compelling evidence
that regular exercise, at least five days per
week, is a way to sharpen our cognitive
ability as young adults – challenging
the assumption that living a sedentary
lifestyle leads to problems only later in
life,” she says.
The research also provides potential
insight into understanding why people
who regularly engage in aerobic exercise
tend to function better on a cognitive
level.
“I think the idea that young people do
not have to worry about exercising since
they are in their prime developmentally
is rapidly being overturned by mounting
evidence that even the brains of young
adults can benefit from regular exercise,”
she says.
“The exercise could involve brisk
walking or more vigorous activity, and
could be made up of a few 10 minute
bouts of exercise, rather than one single
block of exercise,” she says.
The researchers also found that body
mass index was not a key factor in how
well the brain functioned, indicating that
regular engagement in physical activity
may be more important than body
weight.
Dr Machado says she had noticed
over the years that university students
appeared progressively less fit.
“I wondered whether we might find
significant relationships between exercise
levels, oxygen availability in the brain,
and cognition in the young adults, but
no studies had considered this in healthy
young adults.”
These findings come at a time of
increased scientific focus on links
between exercise and cognitive health in
older adults.
DENTON PARK - NOTICE OF PROPOSED PARTIAL
CHANGES IN RESERVE CLASSIFICATION AND THE
MANAGEMENT PLAN
The proposal to build a new Hornby Library, Customer Services and South West Leisure Centre
on Denton Park requires a part change in reserve classification to one that covers community
buildings, and changes to the Denton Park Management Plan.
DENTON PARK
The project to build a new Hornby Library, Customer Services and South West Leisure Centre is
provided for in the Christchurch City Council’s Long Term Plan 2010-25. The Council at its meeting
on 24 August 2017 approved Denton Park as the preferred location for the new complex. This is
proposed to be sited on part of Denton Park fronting the Main South Road.
Denton Park is a recreation reserve subject to the provisions of the Reserves Act 1977. To ensure
the proper control, management, use and development, it is appropriate that the part of Denton
Park reserve on which the new complex is proposed to be sited is classified for the intended
purpose of community buildings. Also, the Denton Park Management Plan is required to be
amended to reflect this proposed development on Denton Park.
The Christchurch City Council thereby gives notice as follows:
Proposed Change of Reserve Classification - Part of Denton Park
It is proposed to change the reserve classification for the parcel of land specified in Schedule A
below from Recreation Reserve to Local Purpose (Community Buildings) Reserve in accordance
with Section 24(1)(b) of the Reserves Act 1977.
Schedule A
Part of Rural Section 41304, contained in Computer Freehold Register 504741, comprising 9766
square metres subject to survey and marked “A” on the plan below.
Changes to the Denton Park Management Plan
It is proposed to change the Denton Park Management Plan to accommodate the new Hornby
Library, Customer Services and South West Leisure Centre and to incorporate other minor changes
and corrections.
An indicative plan of the area of land proposed to be subject to the proposed change in reserve
classification, and the draft proposed changes to the Management Plan, are available for inspection
during ordinary office hours at the Civic Offices, 53 Hereford Street, Christchurch. Copies can
also be inspected at the Hornby Library, Goulding Avenue, Hornby, and on the Council’s website
(www.ccc.govt.nz/HaveYourSay).
Persons or organisations interested in these proposals are asked to make submissions or
objections to the Council. These, clearly identifying which matter is being addressed, should be
made in writing no later than 5pm on Monday 26 March 2018.
You can do this:
• online at www.ccc.govt.nz/HaveYourSay;
• email ann.campbell@ccc.govt.nz;
• mail (no stamp required) to Freepost Authority No. 178, Ann Campbell, Engagement Advisor,
PO Box 73013, Christchurch 8154;
• hand deliver to Civic Offices, 53 Hereford Street.
Submitters should state in their submission if they wish to appear before a hearings panel to be
heard in support of their submission or objection.
For further information contact Derek Roozen, Senior Network Planner Parks, phone (03) 941 8798
or e-mail to derek.roozen@ccc.govt.nz
