The Showcase is an opportunity for regional manufacturing and logistics companies to learn what the local high school programs are currently accomplishing as they prepare to compete in the Southworks Engineering and Robotics Olympics. Hillcrest, Oak Forest, and Tinley Park High School students were given the opportunity to interact with numerous Southland companies including: Ardagh, Bimba Manufacturing, Camco Manufacturing, Do-Rite Manufacturing, GC America, ITW, Kay Manufacturing, LB Steel, Mi-Jack, Panduit, SET Enterprises, Sterling Lumber, Triton Manufacturing, and Whiting Corporation. The goal of the day was to assist students as they prepare for the Olympics and provide industry connections to inspire students to pursue careers in the manufacturing industry. Having an opportunity to network with sponsoring business representatives can be very beneficial to students who are thinking about their future careers. “The Showcase is a great way for our students to gain exposure to manufacturing career pathways right in our backyard,” stated Career Readiness Coordinator, Renee Mack. Bremen, Oak Forest, Tinley Park and Hillcrest High School Robotic Teams will choose to compete in SUMO Survivor, Catapult Launch, ROBO Pathfinder, VEX Robotics or Autonomous Racer at the Southworks Engineering and Robotics Olympics scheduled for April 14 at South Suburban College. For more information, contact Renee Mack at rmack@bhsd228.com. <strong>TP</strong>HS students picked for IHSAE ‘Best of the Best’ exhibition SUBMITTED BY BREMEN HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT 228 Bremen High School 228’s Visual Art students were recently selected to participate in the Illinois High School Art General Exhibition, which takes place on Feb. 28. The General Exhibition is one of Illinois’ premier high school art exhibitions featuring student visual artworks from some of the top city, suburban, public and private high schools. The General Exhibition is a “Best of the Best” competition, developed by teachers, to recognize high school students’ artistic excellence. Congratulations to these selected 16 District 228 Students from Tinley Park, Hillcrest, Bremen and Oak Forest High School competed in The SouthWorks Engineering & Robotics show last month. Each year, over 100 high schools register to participate in the General Exhibition at the Zhou B. Art Center located in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood. High schools digitally submit up to 25 artworks into 8 categories: Drawing, Painting, Mixed Media, Design, Photography, Pottery, Sculpture, and Time Arts via SlideRoom, an online visual slide review platform. The IHSAE receives well over 2,500 submissions for consideration for the General Exhibition. All entries are curated by the IHSAE Board of Directors and guest jurors, who select works by over 500 student artists for exhibition. Students have an opportunity to compete against their peers for over $15,000 in IHSAE awards and scholarships, including the IHSAE Visionary Award. Students also have an opportunity to receive Early College/Summer Intensive scholarships offered by representatives from select art schools, colleges and universities across the country. Jennifer Reid, Bremen High School Art Instructor and Interim Fine Art Supervisor stated, “This is truly an honor for our art students to be selected for this premiere exhibition. PHOTO SUBMITTED LWE students capture 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at welding competition SUBMITTED BY LINCOLN-WAY DISTRICT 2010 On Feb. 2, over 25 students from Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way East and Lincoln-Way West participated in the annual Moraine Valley Community College Welding Competition. Over 60 students from local schools participated in the event, which was divided into three levels of competition. Students from Joliet West, Joliet Central, Argo, Stagg and Evergreen Park were among the competitors. “Welding competitions are a great way to test our students’ ability to weld,” says Lincoln-Way Central/ Lincoln-Way East Welding Instructor, Daymon Gast. “My students also get to see post-secondary opportunities for continuing their welding experience.” Each student’s skills were put to the test in a timelimited manner. Four areas of competition involved Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding, Oxy-Acetylene Torch cutting and a written test. Winners in the high school competition from District 210 were: Lincoln-Way East sophomore Matt Gorczynski, who took first place in the Level 1 Beginner division Lincoln-Way East senior Adrian Villasenor, who took second place in the Level 3 Advanced division Lincoln-Way East senior Joey Knaperek, who took third place in the Level 1 Beginner division Prizes for the winners included a trophy plaque for each student’s respective school, welding equipment and a medal. Moraine Valley also provided students with lunch and a special presentation about Non Destructive Testing. “All my students practiced hard and deliberately for this contest; you have to,” Gast said. “It’s not like you can just show up and do it. It’s a real skill—one that is very marketable for a great paying career.”
