Weathering the Storm
Extreme cold gives way to normal temperatures
Mark T. Carroll
Contributing Columnist
The beginning of January
started the same way December
ended: very cold. The
Christmas Day to New Year
Day seven-day period was the
second coldest Dec.25-Jan.
1 on record for the Chicago
area. The high temperature
Jan. 1 was 1 degree, which
was the coldest maximum
temperature for that date. he
temperature remained below
20 degrees from Dec. 26
through Jan. 6 which tied the
record of 12 consecutive days
below 20 degrees.
The normal number of
days with below-zero temperatures
for winter is seven.
By Jan. 6, there had been
eight days with below-zero
temperatures this winter.
High winds from Dec. 31
through Jan. 2 produced wind
chills of -25 to -40 degrees.
A brief warmup occurred
on Jan. 10 and 11, with the
high temperature of 59 degrees
on the Jan. 11, which
was 2 degrees below the record
of 61 for that date. January
had a total of five days
with the high temperature
reaching at least 50 degrees.
Roller coaster temperatures
through the month created
an average temperature for
the month that was 0.8 degrees
above normal.
Below normal snowfall
for the winter season continued
through January.
Through the end of January,
snowfall is half of normal
for the winter season.
A light freezing drizzle
and rain event began during
the afternoon of Jan. 7 and
continued until changing to
light snow with generally
less than a half-nch of snow
accumulation. Because of
the extreme cold in the two
weeks prior to Jan. 7, the
pavement was very cold,
causing the rain and drizzle
to freeze on contact, producing
slick roads.
A freezing drizzle event
Jan. 24 produced hazardous
driving conditions. During
the early morning hours, a
truck collided with a car near
175th Street and LaGrange
Road in Tinley Park, killing
the driver of the car. Numerous
cars were also involved
in an accident in the eastbound
lanes of Interstate 80,
near Harlem Avenue.
The most significant
snowfall of January began
around 8 p.m. on Jan. 14 and
continued until the morning
Jan. 16.
The following are local
snowfall reports from the
Jan. 14-16.
• New Lenox: 4.7 inches
• Lockport 3.9 inches
