It was thinking about this that we recently<br />
discussed the marriage of styles between<br />
the elegance of so many period exteriors,<br />
with many an original feature inside too,<br />
in combination with the best that today’s<br />
luxury designs and innovations provide.<br />
To look at North Lodge, a beautiful family<br />
home in Suffolk, you probably wouldn’t<br />
think it was filled with the latest in luxury<br />
design touches!<br />
The owners had very clear ideas about<br />
what they wanted and were delighted with<br />
the finished blend of period styling and<br />
modern luxury.<br />
It makes us wonder why so often,<br />
people tip toe around period property<br />
refurbishments or renovations, scared to<br />
make a wrong move ‘out of keeping’ and<br />
we hear phrases such as ‘sympathetically<br />
restored’ used a lot.<br />
When you stop to think about it, this isn’t a<br />
case of opposites attract. These beautiful<br />
homes were once at the leading edge of<br />
construction, design and innovation. From<br />
rooflines, to ornate brick and plasterwork,<br />
many are still a showcase of the skilled<br />
craftsmen of the day.<br />
So, they hardly need protecting from the<br />
modern concepts and designs of <strong>2018</strong>. If<br />
anything, expertly brought together, they<br />
are a perfect and long-lasting marriage.<br />

Yet, with the right approach, which must<br />
include knowledge of the quirks and<br />
eccentricities of older properties, there<br />
really is no reason to hold back on creating<br />
amazing kitchens and bathrooms, for<br />
example.<br />
In the hands of the right expert builder,<br />
even extensions and conversions can be<br />
created to appear part of the original<br />
fabric.<br />
Period properties were never built to be<br />
demure wallflowers. They were created to<br />
show off how much we’d advanced and<br />
how wonderfully modern we were at that<br />
time.<br />
