Something to Think About?
During this Christmas break I was invited
to visit a church, but as I discovered no
ordinary church! I wanted to share my
experience with you all, because it was one
of the most inspiring spaces I have ever
encountered. A church that is open every
day and was so busy and happy it was heart
warming. Friends invited me to the church
of St. James in West Hampstead.
Incredible. Facing falling attendance
numbers, struggling to fund the fabric of
the building and keen to place the church
back at the heart of the community, a brave
decision was made to remove the pews
and turn it into a versatile space. It holds
all of its services, but so much more and
the people I spoke with really feel that the
church itself has brought a new lease of life
to the community and refocused peoples’
minds on the whole meaning of goodwill.
It was uplifting and an ingenious use of
the space with people from all walks of life,
young and old, mingling. The people and
the church were supporting one another,
and those that work and volunteer there
are all passionate about their involvement.
I left tingling all over. It was an
experience I shall never forget.
