WEEDONS AND Sefton
have seized the early
initiative in the top-four
section of the Canterbury
Country premier one-day
competition.
Weedons defeated
Leeston-Southbridge
by three wickets in a
tight match played
in bowler-friendly
conditions at Weedons
Domain.
Batting first, Leeston-
Southbridge made a slow
but steady start before
Weedons’ Jonathan Green
dismissed both William
Macfarlane for 17 and
Chris Beatson for a duck
in quick succession to
have the visitors at 28/2.
Opening batsman Liam
O’Sullivan was the only
batsman to make a healthy
contribution, grinding
out 39 from 101 deliveries
before being bowled by
Green.
Leeston-Southbridge
were bowled out for 119
in the 38th over. Weedons
were able to clean up the
middle order and tail
with relative ease. Brad
Nightingale and Green
were the best of the
bowlers, both claiming
three wickets.
Weedons’ run chase got
off to a shaky start. They
found themselves two
wickets down for just 10
runs early. Gareth Painter
and Sam Wilson were able
to steady the ship by combining
for a third wicket
partnership of 32.
However, it was the
lower order that fired to
get Weedons over the
line. Number 6 Shannon
Dunnett and No 9 Kane
Meyerhoff both scoring 23
runs each to see their side
reach the total in the 24th
over.
O’Sullivan continued
an impressive day of work
with three wickets to
finish as the best Leeston-
Southbridge bowler.
