AN ALLEGED home invader who
was confronted by a Scarborough
mother in the early hours of the
morning has sacked his lawyer.
Nathan Manning, who has been
held in custody since his arrest in
early November, appeared in the
district court last week charged
with committing a burglary with
a weapon, burglary, theft from a
vehicle and theft.
He was remanded in custody
again until May to speak with his
new counsel after he was unhappy
with the first lawyer’s advice.
It’s alleged he entered hairdresser
Emely van Ras’ home about 3am last
October, demanded money from her
and threatened her with a knife.
She used a ceremonial Fijian
“skull crusher” to hold him off.
The home invasion and other
crime in the area prompted the formation
of the Safer Sumner group,
which fundraised for two CCTV
cameras.
The group is working with the
Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community
Board to ensure compliance
with the Privacy Act before installing
the cameras.
A site opposite the Sumner Surf

WHAT WOULD Sumner be without surf
– and a skate ramp?
Surfing and skateboarding go hand-inhand
and now the village has a temporary
ramp on the corner of Wakefield Ave and
Nayland St. The Sumner Green and Skate group has worked
hard over the past year to get the new site up and going. This
was reflected in the big turnout for the opening at the weekend,
which we cover in today’s paper.
Running man Vajin Armstrong (see page 15) is back in the
winner’s circle again.
The Sumner Running Club member won the 85km Old Ghost
Ultra marathon on the West Coast. It took him just over seven
hours.
One fit rooster, I suspect.

Push to get pathway funding
• By Sarla Donovan
THE COASTAL pathway has
been put into the city council’s
draft Long Term Plan.
Heathcote Ward city
councillor Sara Templeton
last week pushed through an
amendment to the draft LTP to
try and prioritise what she said
was a “key piece of community
infrastructure.”
The fourth
and final
stage of the
Christchurch
Coastal
Pathway
between the
Sara
Templeton
Moncks Bay
tram stop
and Shag
Rock corner
– expected to cost between
$10 million and $12 million –
currently has no funding.
The pathway is being jointly
funded by the city council and
the Coastal Pathway Group.
The third section from Shag
Rock to the Sumner Surf Life
Saving Club has funding and
an anticipated start date of
April.
However, there is no money
at present for the final section.
Ms Templeton’s amendment
means a report with an
estimate of the costs for the
section and a time frame for
delivery will be included in
the draft Long Term Plan and
the community will be able to
make submissions on it.
There was a lack of
understanding about the
coastal pathway, with some
city councillors viewing it as
purely a “recreational nice-tohave,”
she said.
“This report, and
community submissions, will
enable the project to have the
best chance at success.”
Ms Templeton said the
original footpath on the other
side of the road was removed
during rockfall remediation
work and not replaced.
Moncks Bay pathway
is currently a “dangerous
informal path” with a drop
down to the rock or sea below.
“Footpaths are a core council
function, but this section is
currently not funded at all,”
she said.
SHORTFALL: The Moncks
Bay section of the coastal
pathway has no funding at
present.

Lower speed
limit likely for
Richmond Hill Rd
PRECIPITOUS Richmond Hill
Rd in Sumner could get a lowered
speed limit of 40km/h as a new
bylaw comes into effect.
The city council is proposing to
reduce speeds after “requests from
the local community in relation
to safety concerns in Richmond
Hill.”
The road is narrow with minimal
footpaths and cars are often
parked on the side of the road.
Speed restrictions would
apply from the intersection with
Nayland St upwards.
Speed advisory signs are also
planned on the hairpin bends,
likely to be between 15 and
25km/h.
The new Traffic and Parking
Bylaw takes effect in March,
allowing the city council to
set and change speed limits
on Christchurch roads – in
accordance with Land Transport
rules.
However, there are no moves
afoot to put in new footpaths or
widen the road, due to lack of
funding and space.

Signage under scrutiny
• By Sarla Donovan
TOO MANY signs along
Sumner and Scarborough
Beach could dilute their
impact.
Sumner residents have
been pushing for clearer
signage after 14-year-old
Jack Sutton was caught
in a rip and died while
swimming near Cave Rock
earlier this month.
But Surf Life Saving New
Zealand is warning against
information overload.
“If too many signs are
put in place with too much
information, there is too
much to take in and the
original message doesn’t
get through to members
of the community,” said
southern region manager
Stu Bryce.
The city council has
contacted SLS NZ about
completing an audit of
signage in the area.
Most of what is currently
there was installed by the
city council in 2010 and
was intended to describe
the hazards of the area.
The focus was on ensuring
people were informed
and encouraged to swim
between the flags, a
meeting of the Sumner
SIGNS: The current signage at Sumner and
Scarborough beaches warns of strong currents
but doesn’t mention rips or identify specific spots.
Community Residents’ Association
and city council
parks unit staff heard on
February 13.
The signs identify
“strong currents” as a hazard,
but do not specify rips
or identify particular spots.
The idea of moveable
signs was raised at the
meeting – which could be
shifted according to ocean
conditions.
Mr Bryce said any signs
would need to be suitable
based on conditions.
“The feasibility and security
of any moveable signs
will need to be worked out
further along the discussion.”
SLS NZ is also in discussions
with the city council
about having flags on
Scarborough Beach.
It currently only
has only roving patrols by
Sumner Surf Life Saving
Club volunteers, due to
its 1.25km length and the
fact it was covered at high
tide.

It’s really important they have a

She hoped the ramp would

Sumner builder Trevor Hone

SIX PEOPLE had a lucky

The campervan overturned

Police said the campervan

Police said the interior of

There was tomato sauce

THE STEPS which once
provided public access to
the beach at the eastern end
of Beachville Rd need be
restored, says a residents’
association.
The Redcliffs Residents’
Association has written a letter
asking for the project to be
included in the city council’s
Long Term Plan.
The previous steps were
damaged in the February 22,
2011, earthquake, and were
not replaced during repairs to
the sea wall.
The association has asked
the Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community Board
to amend the draft Long Term
Plan to include the project.
There is a small beach at
the site which is well-used
by swimmers, kayakers
and paddle boarders, said
association secretary Pat
McIntosh.
However, at the moment
access is only possible by
clambering over unstable
rocks, said Dr McIntosh.
“We have been told of two
people who have received
minor injuries when trying
to take kayaks over these
boulders.” The nearest
alternative access ways to the
beach is about 1km in either
direction, she said.
“(This project) may be small
but is very important for the
amenity of this coastal area.”

New plan
saves Lyttelton
car parks
• By Sarla Donovan
FIVE PARKING spaces will now
be retained after criticism over
changes to bus stops and parking
in central Lyttelton.
As part of a proposal in October
last year, the city council wanted
to remove five parking spaces on
Oxford St, near the Winchester
St intersection, to improve sight
lines for pedestrians using the
crossing – which it intends to
make permanent.
But after public opposition to
the loss of on-street parking, the
city council proposed an alternative
crossing design. It would
result in safety improvements and
retain some on-street parking, according
to a city council report.
A school safety zone is in operation
in the area, so the speed limit
will be lower at times when the
crossing is in high use. The other
changes include two existing bus
stops on Winchester and Oxford
Sts being replaced by one about
50m north along Oxford St; a new
bus stop seat; extending time-restricted
parking outside Lyttelton
Primary School and extending
the no-stopping area on Oxford St
north of London St.
Work is set to start in April/
May and will cost about $60,000.

changed our city – especially
where people lived and worked
and how they get about.
Environment Canterbury
has been working with our city
council to look at transport
needs and I think the big picture
it is considering should be commended.
The Greater Christchurch
CUTBACKS: The Eastgate to Lyttelton and Rapaki bus service
may be cut as ECan looks to plug a $4 million hole in its public
transport budget.
public transport joint committee
is also doing good work,
finally bringing the roles of the
regional council and the city
council together (obviously with
central government through the
New Zealand Transport Agency
as well). But there are some immediate
challenges to be faced.
There is a $4 million hole in
ECan’s public transport budget.
As a response to this, it is proposing
to axe six routes which
are not well used, including the
Eastgate to Lyttelton and Rapaki
route.
It is also proposing to remove
the subsidy which disabled people
currently have on their fares.
I fear that we are on a continuing
downward spiral with
public transport and that it
might be time to take a fresh
approach about how investment
could improve usage and end up
with more people using our bus
service than currently do.
It has certainly improved
since 2011, but is still not paying
its way.
How much cross subsidy
should there be for those people
in areas which have no alternatives
other than private car use?
Is our model broken or does it
just need tweaking?
This is a really important issue
and ECan want to hear your
views. I encourage you to make
a submission on the Long Term
Plan which just opened this
week.
Have your say while you can.

Daniel Leadley – The most
painful thing about working in
Christchurch parks. The fact
you’re not allowed to take dead
leaves off the trees themselves
– having to wait till they are
spread all over the park before
you can pick them up – is very
frustrating.
We said:

subsequent land sale
You said:
Maria Simmonds – I am
a recently retired teacher with
experience in mainstream
and special schools, and
as an itinerant teacher of
students with special needs in
mainstream schools.
I believe van Asch school
and education centre would be
much better situated in a central
location in Christchurch.
Like Ferndale School
(for children with special
educational needs – intellectual,
sensory and physical) and
Elmwood Visual Resource
Centre (for students with visual
impairment), both located in
Merivale, education centres for
students with special educational
needs should be located centrally
to provide easier accessibility
to the wider community.
Many students with
disabilities are now welcomed
into mainstream schools, and
with sufficient support, their
educational needs are being
met, particularly at primary
school level. However, in my
view, there will always be a place

for schools that offer specialised
teaching in smaller classes for
students whose needs cannot be
met in regular classrooms with
25-35 other students.
Such specialised schools
and resource centres have an
enormous amount to offer
parents, teachers and support
staff, including specialised
knowledge, technology
and experience at the
coal-face. While regular schools
have access to Ministry of
Education specialists, it would
be great to see more collegial
support between specialised
schools and mainstream
schools. Teachers and teacher
aides can learn a great deal from
sharing their experiences.

Mia Griffiths – I hate the
bloody things, much nicer
natives available. We have one in
a reserve in front of our house.
You should see the mess left
after a cyclone’s been through,
and who picks up the leaves and
has to dispose of them? Not the
council.
Nanny Ma – I love them as
they feed bees and birds but woe
betide your lawn mower when it
hits the leaves.
Jan Driscoll – My neighbour
has a massive cabbage tree that
sheds copious dead leaves every
time there is a wind from east
and south, right into my place.
My red bin is full every two
weeks with the darn things. It’s
a beautiful tree, but I wish it was
somewhere else.
James Tarrant – What
killed them? I’m having trouble
trying to get rid of mine.
Seeds keep spreading and
I keep removing them but
sometimes I miss them.
Dessiel Shepard – Okay,
who did this? Just be honest
so I can post you chocolates, beer
and petrol vouchers.
Ashley Campbell – These
trees evolved to be in this
environment. If you look at the
parts of this city that the natural
environment is reclaiming, you
will find cabbage trees are the
most prolific of the regenerating
species. This is their space, we
moved into it. Native birds love
them , the nectar of their flowers
feeds bellbirds, tui, and kereru,
so if you have cabbage trees
around you are more likely to
attract those birds. As well, their
berries feed those same birds and
some introduced species. They
are among the most fire-resistant
of our native trees. Offshore,
for example, in the United
Kingdom they are considered
highly desirable exotic trees to
be tended to and loved (in the
UK they are known as torquay
palms, because they do best
in the south-west of Great
Britain). It would be nice if we
could treat them with the same
love and respect here, where they
evolved, and are a crucial part of
our natural ecosystem.
Sara Templeton – Not for
everyone, I know, but I learned
how to make twine from the
leaves at a rekindle workshop.
Shelley Ingle – Their leaves,
when dry, are great for starting
fires . . . less kindling required!

Tutors’ commitment brings
results for students
A genuine commitment to helping
students achieve in education and concern
for what happens to them are what brings
the results for children tutored at Kip
McGrath Ferrymead, says franchise owner
Helen Hudson.
“As they progress through the sessions we
see them blossom and grow in confidence
with their learning and that’s so rewarding,”
Helen says.
The other key factors that set Kip McGrath
apart and contribute to students’ success are
that all tutors have to be qualified teachers,
and that students have the same tutor every
time they attend, Helen says.
“This allows the tutors to build a rapport
with their students. They work on an
individualised programme within a small
group of three to five students.”
Communication with parents is another
important aspect, Helen points
out.
“We have to be meeting the
needs of the children as the
parents see it, as well as what
we see is needed.”
Kip McGrath Ferrymead
has six tutors offering students
from Year 1-13 tutoring in
maths and English – covering
a broad spectrum of spelling,
writing and reading, with
the tutors fully conversant
with NCEA requirements.
Chemistry, Physics and Biology
along with English and Maths
tutoring is available for Year
11, 12 and 13 students.
“With the senior students
we work alongside them, but
they are really the leader of
the lesson, which is tailormade
to their needs,” Helen
says.
There is also a focus on
children with learning
difficulties, such as dyslexia,
and for accelerant students,
who need extra challenges.
Each tutoring session lasts one
hour 20 minutes, with about six different
activities included each time. Sessions are
run outside school hours, either before or
after school, with most students attending
once a week.
“We also offer one-on-one tutoring for
adult students, who may need to improve
their English or maths skills for work they
want to apply for.”
There are several funding subsidies
Kip McGrath Ferrymead franchise owner Helen
Hudson helping a student
available for Kip McGrath tutoring.
Registered Ngai Tahu members receive
some funding, as do registered members
of the Rotorua-based Tauhara No. 2 Trust.
Fletchers also provide funding subsidies for
family members of their employees.
Free assessments are offered, and students
can enroll at any time of the year.

VAJIN ARMSTRONG has
gone one better at the 85km
Old Ghost Ultra marathon on
the West Coast after finishing
second in 2017.
The Sumner Running Club
member completed the race in
just over seven hours to win
comfortably by more than
17min ahead of his nearest
competitor.
He also continued a strong
month of competitions after
winning the 62km event at
the Tarawera Ultra Marathon
earlier this month.
The Old Ghost Ultra on
Saturday started at 6am from
Seddonville. All competitors
required a head torch for the
first hour to navigate the old
miner’s trail, which at times
was cliff-hugging, through
the stunning Mokihinui River
Gorge.
Armstrong was in the leading
pack of four runners up to the
first check point (17km). After
that, he started to increase the
pace and the pack whittled
down while running through
the towering podocarp forest.
Armstrong reached the
halfway point, completing the
first 43km in a blistering time of
3hr 21min. From here, the race
became a true test. Competitors
were treated to an 800m ascent
over the next 13km. Part way up
the climb there was more than
200 steps to contend with which
smashed the quads, but runners
were rewarded with breathtaking
views of the Southern

Diamond
Harbour-
Kaituna
cricket
side seeks
promotion
• By Gordon Findlater
THE DIAMOND Harbour-
Kaituna Cricket Club is
hopeful of having a team in the
Canterbury country premier
grade competition for the first
time since 2015.
The club’s top one-day side
currently sits comfortably at the
top of the combined senior grade
competition. The winner of the
competition has the option to be
promoted to the premier grade.
Team manager and club
stalwart Mark Pearson believes
the current crop of players at the
club have what it takes to gain
promotion and compete with the
big boys of country cricket next
summer.
First the team have to finish
the summer the way they started.
They currently have just one loss
to their name. However, their
near perfect record will count
for nothing when the semi-finals
start next month.
Although the club slipped
out of the top grade of country
cricket, in recent years they have
had plenty of player accomplishments
to celebrate. Current Black
Cap Henry Nicholls is the club’s
first and only New Zealand
representative, while pace bowler
Will Williams from Little Akaloa
has featured for Canterbury at
first class level this summer.
A strong contingent of weekly
regulars have helped the team to
dominate the combined senior
grade to date this season. Hamish
Matheson, Andy Nicholls,
Bevan Sloan and Johnny Pugh
have all led the charge with the
bat, while Jonathan Moody has
been the chief destroyer with the
ball.
They host Weedons B on Saturday
and travel to Swannanoa on
March 10 before the semi-finals
begin on March 17.
